Hey, I got tinnitus from 3 doses of 50mg sertraline. I stopped it after 3 days. But I still have constant tinnitus since. It is now 15 weeks, and I still have it. I have no hearing loss either.

I am finding it very hard to cope. My job is at risk.

Did your tinnitus clear up?

Sertraline 50mg  May 2020 3 days, got severe tinnitus, then quit. Tinnitus ongoing 30 days later.

Sertraline 50mg Oct 2019 2 weeks, piling on weight, then quit.

Cipramil 2002 - 2008, OK on them, decided to stop myself. Went a bit loopy. Did some regrettable things.

Withdrawal has damaged my hearing so much that I now have to use hearing aids. My right ear is now deaf and my left is getting worse and worse. The withdrawal tinnitus caused this and it is not psychological.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder has been diagnosed in 2010. Main symptoms were internal tremors and palpitations . In October 2010 I visited doctor who prescribed me SSRI - Fluvoxamin called Fevarin. I took it 2 months but pain of skin hurt me and i did not feel better.

Meantime I read on polish websites lots of positivies stories about people who took paroxetine. Then I visited doctor and forced him to prescibe paroxetine for me. Paroxertine was started in January 2011, two weeks later I feel litte better, it means level of anxiety was decreased by 0 level, my stomach did not already hurt me and I thought it would have helped to me survive hard time at University. Soon I got strange side effect - tinnitus. I visited ENT and family doctor to look for reason of it. ENT asked me that I needed to take SSRI but I confirmed it. It was my most mistake.

I continued taking Paroxetine until the summer time 2011. In the meantime doctor increased me dose of paroxetine from 20 to max - 60 mg. I got ear pain soon but Doctor denied SSRI to caused me to have ear pain from it. Paroxetine decreased level of anxiety to zero high what caused me any pain to not worry me. It was horrible! When I withdrawn Paroxetine, tinnitus never passed and I've been keeping me since then. At the beginning I got used to live with it. Moreover in the meantime I came back to take SSRI. Finally cooperation with psychologist helped me to live without SSRI since almost 2 years. I'm thankful you to have website like SA where everybody have abiity to descibe his story and share with other ones to be better undersood.

I have question for you. Do you understand how SSRI demage ear? I know that lots of people experienced this side effect but nowhere I can find explanation of it.

I got tinnitus since reducing from 10mg paroxetine per day to per two days instead, as the doctor knew nothing about withdrawal. It never really changed in pitch or form, and I’m still on the 10% tapering plan.

I believe your tinnitus will go away. It is not just a wild guess, but based on how SSRI remodels the brain, it takes time for the brain to reverse remodel the brain AFTER tapering. It could be a good sign for the tinnitus to change, as the brain will work automatically to restore back to the previous state (the state before the first dose of SSRI).

However, in light of your mind and peace, it is better to see an ENT specialist to scan whether there’s any organic changes to the interior structure of your ears.

Paroxetine (strength per dose, not actual weight)
Aug 2014: 20mg

?: 10mg

1 Nov 2019: 10mg [per two days]
6 Nov 2019: tinnitus onset
29 Nov 2019: 10mg
2 Dec 2019: 20mg
13 Dec 2019: 30mg

Now 4 MONTHS of CONSTANT ringing I need to know if it gets better and if there is hope for it to go away. What did Pristiq do to my brain? I get headaches and I am exhausted constantly. Hello,

I am desperately seeking advice and trying to find hope. I took pristiq for 1 month and started to get a very loud high pitched ringing in my head. I stopped Cold Turkey and after 6 months off I still have the same ringing in my head. I don't know what that terrible drug did to me. Could it be ototoxicity and it damaging my auditory nerves and now I have tinnitus for the rest of my life? Is there an issue with my somatic/parasympathetic Nervous System which can lead to thyroid disfunction? I almost went out and bought iodine to try to see if it will help. I am desperate because I have tried every diet and sleep trick, but it hasn't changed anything. I still have  this incredibly uncomfortable buzzing and high pitched ring CONSTANTLY. Will the ringing EVER STOP? After 6 months of panic attacks and cutting back on exercise and coffee (those intensified the tinnitus) will I ever feel normal again? I hate the fact I took a SNRI when I knew it would be too strong and I knew it was causing permanent damage. And I can not take the ringing any longer. I need it to stop.

I'm sorry to hear you are suffering.  Tinnitus is a hard thing to deal with.   I have it also. I've had it a very long time but it never really bothered me. A few years ago it got bad. I think from gabapentin or an antibiotic but can't be sure.  It was a nightmare. I still have it but some days its worse than others and I have for the most part adapted to it.   You may find the same.  I have to sleep with white noise of some sort.  I have a machine or play something on my phone.

I should have never taken that drug I never wanted to and now I am furious everyday knowing I have to suffer with a dentist drill in my brain. I told my sh*tty doctor I couldn't handle SSRIs and they thought it was a good Idea to give me a SNRI, something even more strong, and not even at the lowest dose. I wish I could sue the b**** into her suicide. The tinnitus is extremely hard and loud. I've have tried everything, and after 6 months I am going insane. It is really pushing me towards suicide I cant deal with this anymore.

Hang in there.  I know its tough. I've been there and I am currently dealing with something just as debilitating.  These doctors give these meds and go on their merry way not caring about the effects.   Or they don't believe us.   If you need to talk message me.   I totally understand.

Does anyone here recovered from AD induced tinnitus?

I am refering to the noise induced by its use and not the wd/tapering.

Tinnitus

Just reading through various success stories, it seems a lot of people get stuck with tinnitus. It does improve for most i've read on here, but seems it never goes away?   Is there anything folks have tried that has helped?

I don't notice mine so much during the day due to all the background noise, but definitely noticeable at bed time.  Mine started about 1mth after i stopped my last Remeron (mirtazapine) pill which i had only taken for 7 days. Been about 4months now and the tinnitus hasn't changed. I've got a night time "sleep mask" that has in built speakers that can play some calming sounds / rain music etc to  help mask out the tinnitus perception -   it sort of is helpful some nights.

Edited by ChessieCat
added topic title before merging with existing topic

Remeron 15mg for 1 day in July '21,  then 7.5mg for 6days ending 30 July 21.   Immediate ADR. Went to ER several times, including ICU stay. Dealing with headaches, headpressure, tinnitus, hyperacusis, arm weakness, panic attack like feelings ever since.

No more drugs since, just vitamins Magnesium L-Threonate & Glycinate, fish oil , curcumin , ubiquinol, acetyl L Carnitine and alpha-lipoid acid, vitamin d3, vitamin k2 as mk7, and an overall men’s multi-vit.  Though I'm mainly just using magnesium since 2022.

20 days ago I had a micropulsed yellow laser surgery on my eye to treat a central serous chorioretinopathy. At the end of the surgery I was installed with drops of the extreme ototoxic antibiotic Tobramycin of the Aminoglycoside class, because I am allergic to fluoroquinolones. Now is 5 days I have had severe tinnitus in my right ear and hyperacusis, I can't sleep and listen to music, my great passion.

Any advice I'm desperate? I have read that tinnitus caused by Aminoglycosides is often permanent, I have to go to my doctor tomorrow. But the ENT audiologist gave me the appointment next week.

Some advice? Please Help

I spoke to the prescribing eye doctor, he says eye drops are impossible such a reaction, but online I found hundreds of stories. My doctor says that Tobramycin is highly ototoxic only when taken orally or intravenously not in eye drops. But I have found hundreds of online stories of people who have had ears ruined by Tobramycin eye drops. I have to do the audiomentric tests with the otolaryngologist next Thursday, I have to see if it caused functional and structural damage.

My bad luck with drugs is simply incredible, so many of my relatives have had eye laser surgery and none have had their ears damaged and tinnitus from antibioitic eye drops.

2001, Amisulpride (deniban) - 3 months, I taper in some weeks

2001, Seroquel, 4 weeks - quit cold turkey, 2001. Efexxor,  one pill adverse reaction

2002. Amitryptaline (mutabon mite) - 4 months, I taper really faster in some weeks

around more 10 years drug free

4 December 2013, 7 drops of citalopram , adverse reaction

December    2013, Italian supplement called serenplus with tryptophan, 9 pills adverse reaction, quit cold turkey.

After December 2013, Im drug free.

Anything safe for sleeping?

After one eye laser surgery I developed Tinnitus, I believe it was caused by the ototoxic antibiotic eye drops I was instilled after the surgery called Tobramycin. I have been sleeping very badly for weeks and I am in a lot of pain I stay awake at night. Can you suggest something safe to sleep on? The otolaryngologist prescribed Ritrovil is it safe? Alternatively, do you say that I can take Melatonin?

Has anyone tried any treatments for tinnitus?  For example, I've read that in early onset sometimes it can be treated with steroids.  I realize this is probably impossible for people in antidepressant withdrawal because of medication sensitivity.

2009-2021: Fluoxetine (20-40 mg) on-and-off many times, would reinstate after 4-6 months off.

Aug 2021: Tapered off 20 mg fluoxetine over 6 weeks.

Dec 2021: Reinstated 10 mg fluoxetine for 12 days, then stopped for three weeks.

Jan-Feb 2022: Reinstated 10 mg fluoxetine again for 3.5 weeks, had severe side effects due to kindling, stopped and went into severe withdrawal.

March 2022: Tried a botched reinstatement of fluoxetine - 2.5 mg one day, 1.25 mg the next day, stopped 4 days(?), 0.5 mg for 3 days, then stopped due to burning sensations.

July 2022: Loud movie significantly worsens ear symptoms (tinnitus, hyperacusis, TMJD etc.)

Nov 2022: 1 mg of Lexapro for 3 days, stopped due to strong side effects.

My tinnitus started in October, 2018 when  I started to taper off of Bupropion.  My initial dose was 300-mg.  I have had it since 2018 and it has continued up to this day and I'm almost at 18-mg.

When I drink a lot of water, temperarily, my tinnitus stops.

As for the cause, see the article.

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/319077

1997-1999 Xanax

1999-2000 Slow taper off of Xanax nonsupportive by my 'doctor' at the time.

2000- 2018 Burpropion, first at 75 mg, then 100 mg, and finally 300 mg.

2012-2018  Experienced 'poop symptoms: digestive issues, tumors, inability to tolerate stress, weight gain, etc.

Tinnitus and anti-depressants

I developed tinnitus 6 months ago. Have been on Effexor 20+years and never realized these meds can cause tinnitus. I recently began my taper off Effexor. Has anyone experience this too and did your tinnitus go away after withdrawal?

Anyone healed from a late onset of tinnitus when it's at least a week after a med is introduced?

2018: abilify(ct) -> lamictal(ct) -> quetiapine(fast taper): no withdrawal syndrome. All side effects and adverse reactions disappeared as soon as I went off the meds.

2019-2021: psych med free;

2021/05 - 08: oral contraceptive for abnormal period (had very irregular period with bleeding that could last 3 weeks)

2021/11: Had shingles for a few weeks, used gabapentin & Valacyclovir. Stopped when shingles stopped. No issues.

2022- 2/11-2/27: Vraylar 1.5mg/day, 2/25-2/27: Mirtazapine(all under previous psych NP's instruction); Went to ER for akathisia on 3/6/2022 and tried propranolol with lorazepam for around 5 days but did not work. Hospitalized on 3/16/2022 due to akathisia and introduced the following: Clonidine 0.1mg/day for 2 weeks; Lorazepam 0.5mg twice/day for 1 week; benztropine 1mg twice/day for 1 week; propranolol 10mg/day for 1 week.

100mg/day vitamin B6 from 4/6-4/17.

No med since 4/14/2022.

I think I will just start to compile some success stories I found regarding tinnitus:

Shep posted in Shawny's intro regarding 3 member's recovery:

Wigglet also followed up in the same page that the tinnitus is 99% gone

Noh1995 has reported "tinnitus and eye floaters have disappeared":

I also found some recovery stories from "Success Stories From Around The Web":

RoxxaneS included in the signature that tinnitus(gone)

Sadly I can't find many(by many I mean more than 50 individual responses) confirmed recovery (by confirm I mean posts that use "gone" or similar words representing disappearance when refer to tinnitus or similar symptoms)

2018: abilify(ct) -> lamictal(ct) -> quetiapine(fast taper): no withdrawal syndrome. All side effects and adverse reactions disappeared as soon as I went off the meds.

Has anyone ever recovered from 24/7 constant tinnitus?  Most of the tinnitus recoveries I see seem to be from people who only had it intermittently.  My tinnitus is 24/7 and unstable, which makes it hard to ignore.

I believe the ones that I have found so far are all constant tinnitus recovery stories. I just found another member who has not recover to 100% yet but report that his tinnitus changed from being constant 24/7 to "on and off through out the day":

I'm also one of the many with tinnitus from anti-depressant withdrawal.  Mine started two years ago, when I did a rapid taper off of Paxil.  I did two 4 to 6 week tapers, bad experiences with both.  The tinnitus started with the second taper, and it runs the gamut of hissing to thumping to sounding like a old TV gone off the air.  The interesting thing is when my 12 year daughter and I put our ears together in direct contact, she can hear the noise.  Some of the theories presented in this thread might explain why that's possible, since doctors with stethoscopes can't seem to hear it.  On a side note has anyone from the San Francisco Bay Area dealt with UCSF's tinnitus clinic, and was it helpful?  Thanks.

1996-2013 Paxil (paroxetine) 60 Mg.

2013 4-6 Week Taper Off Paxil

2015 Hospitalized Myself After More Suicidal Thoughts And Brain Zaps, Staff Psychiatrist Put Me Back On Paxil 20 Mg, And Added:

- 1600 Mg Gabapentin (400 Mg 4 Times A Day)

- 20 Mg Busperone (Two Tablets In Morning)

- 0.5 Klonopin (Twice A Day)

- 5 Mg Ambien (Evening)

My tinnitus started about a month after I stopped taking Lexapro/Escitalopram. I am currently reinstating. After reinstatement it became a brain buzz, and at times travels to the ears. Sometimes it's quiet. There were days where it actually went away. My Psychiatrist thinks that it is triggered by my anxiety. I think the sound is just the electric charges in the brain as the brain is trying to rewire and the sound gets amplified through the ears. I'm hopeful that as the reinstatement progresses it will go away.

Tinnitus is probably my worst symptom. It started a month after CT escitalopram; 2 weeks after CT Vyvanse. I did all audiology tests and there is no structural damage, my hearing is fine (other than normal degradation due to aging).

I believe that discontinuation of AD is the cause for many people suffering from tinnitus. As for Ototoxicity, most if not all psychiatric drugs are listed as ototoxic. This is a little decieving and confusing for people like us trying to resolve this. Intuitively you would be afraid to take any drug listed. However, from what I gathered, many people who got tinnitus from AD discontinuation will resolve the Tinnitus by reinstating, or tapering slower.

Since I started my reinstatement the Tinnitus is showing signs of maybe getting better. I think part of it is finding the optimal dosage and go from there.

I think there should be a separate thread for Tinnitus only symptoms since it's a major symptom that hits many of us.
