Post moved from:  survivingwellbutrin: Wellbutrin withdrawal weight gain?

Hi , I’m new to this site and trying to figure out how and what to start tapering off of 1st. Currently on the highest dose Bupropion XL 450 mg 1x in morning.

Ive been on varied increasing doses of Wellbutrin /Bupropion since 1999. Tried tapering on my own in 2012 because I lost my insurance. It didn’t work to well and had to endure severe psychological & physical withdrawals for 3 months before I could get in to see the state provided psychologist.

I’m really scared to taper and I’ve read the other meds my dr has me on have major drug interactions if taken together! Main one is high blood pressure and seizures. I’m over this roller coaster , my depression is controlled to some degree but still have persistent depression with other symptoms. I want to try to supplement with something natural and am about to drastically change my diet for the better . I want to be pill free ,healthy & happy !

Any suggestions or experiences welcome ...I’d also like to know how  “ survivingWellbutrin “ above is doing since your last post as weight gain is a concern of mine as well .

Thanks for letting me share 🤗

Hello, WEANie (nice name) and welcome to SA.

We need to know which drugs you are on and then we can make a recommendation about tapering.

To give members the best information, we ask them to summarize their medication history in a signature -- drugs, doses, dates, and discontinuations & reinstatements, in the last 12-24 months particularly.  Please put the answers to the above questions plus other requested information into your signature.
  • Please use actual dates or approximate dates (mid-June, Late October) rather than relative time frames (last week, 3 months ago)
  • Spell out months, e.g. "October" or "Oct."; 9/1/2016 can be interpreted as Jan. 9, 2016 or Sept. 1, 2016.
  • Please leave out symptoms and diagnoses.
  • A list is easier to understand than one or multiple paragraphs.

At Surviving Antidepressants, it is recommended that a person taper by no more than 10% of their current dose with at least a four week hold in-between decreases.  The 10% taper recommendation is a harm reduction approach to going off psychiatric drugs.  Some people may have to taper at a more conservative rate as they are sensitive to even the smallest drops.  Please read the following links.
