Linus
Important for US citizens. Senator Bernie Sanders, 2020 presidential candidate, recently did an interview with Joe Rogan. One of the issues he discussed was the broken mental health system in America and pharmaceutical drugs. Sanders is widely know for his criticism of pharmaceutical companies (their pricing policy aka greed). He wants to include mental health counseling in his Medicare for All plan. He also says we should be studying the effect of pharmaceutical drugs on people's behaviour (including violent behaviour). He says he is worried about overmedicating and kids getting an ADHD label. Sounds like someone who is willing to listen to people who suffer from prescribed harm. Starts at 42:20 Escitalopram 1.05 mg (max of 30 mg, taper from 10 mg to now started september 2016) Klonopin 0.3 mg (one dosage reduction of 25 percent, from 0.4 to 0.3 mg september 2017) Supplements: magnesium malate, fish oil, curcumin, multivitamin, iodine, probiotics, vitamine D along with eating healthy 80 percent of the time, I have no problem whatsoever taking supplements. Moderator Emeritus Shep Posted August 17, 2019 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted August 17, 2019 @Linus Thanks for posting this. In addition to the issues you posted about, I liked that Mr. Sanders went into the concept of "diseases of despair" as being the REAL reason for all of the emotional distress (no chemical imbalance was ever mentioned, so that's progress). The way to fix this is in fixing the economy so that people have good jobs, healthcare, and good schools.
Linus
@Shep Thanks for your comment. I completely agree, as a European citizen I am dumbfounded by the way the richest country in the world, organises health care. The US is the only major industrialized country that does not guarantee its citizens single payer healthcare. Now, don't get me wrong, we have a lot of issues with the quality of health care in Europe as well, namely overprescription, potentially harmful drugs that have no or little benefit, the pharmaceutical industry having way too much influence etc., basically the same problems as in the US. I personally think senator Sanders is someone who, if given the right information, would take a hard look at what pharmaceutical companies bring to the market. I have been following Bernie Sanders ever since he launched his bid in 2015, and he never ceases to amaze me. He has so many great ideas, I am rooting for him. And yes, "diseases of despair" is a great way to describe the harm that is being done by neoliberal policies. Take care Shep. drugged
My spouse and I supported Bernie in his 2016 bid and we continue to do so. He is truly amazing. Not only the scope of his ideas but his willingness to learn about issues that perhaps haven't been on his radar previously. I suspect though that his wife may be an influence on him when it comes to his attitude concerning 'mental' illness (I think of it as more of a societal illness) and the need for options other than prescription drugs, especially for children. His wife was a college administrator I believe. 1994 Venlafaxine XR 300mg, 2003 tapered, 2004 off briefly back to 37.5 then 75mg, held, June 2019 up to 150mg, Aug.12 tapered down to 112.5mgs, Oct. 21, 2019 96mg; Dec. 8, 2019 90mg, Jan. 8 2020 81mg, Feb. 4, 75mg; April 17, 2023 37.5mg 2003/2004? Ryder
I like how he mentions when he was a kid, ADHD just meant you would run around outside with your friends instead of being medicated.
