SufferingCelexa: hopelessness from Celexa

Recommended Posts

@GridleyI'm confused.  I either suffer with this depression or try another med or CBD to get through this.  I don't like myself and I'm tired of being alone.

Started Celexa as a sophmore in high school around 2014/2015

I think I took Vyvance 2016/2017

Increased Celexa to 40 mg by 2018

Began to taper Celexa on 12/29/19, cut 1/4 of the 40 mg per week

Last dose of Celexa on 1/19/20

Reinstated 1 mg liquid Celexa in March 2020

Currently still taking 1 mg liquid Celexa

I'm sorry you're feeling so bad, SC.

As you know, we don't recommend other drugs to deal with withdrawal.  That would need to be a decision reached between you and your doctor.

The CBD would have to be your decision.

@Gridley  Thank you.  I have a prescription for Welbutrin but I didn't take it.  I hear mixed reviews and I'm afraid of what it will do.  I just want to feel better.  I had some bad days and couldn't decide what to do.  The CBD helps me at night but it's not something I can take during the day and function for work.  I'm not working now.  I should go back to college but I get so stressed out when I think about even taking one class.  Maybe I should see a doctor other than a psychiatrist.  Do people have any luck with other types of doctors?

I have heard of people who have benefitted greatly from seeing a psychologist or therapist,(not someone who prescribes drugs to solve problems but rather helps you to understand yourself and to deal with your problems.)  Finding a good therapist could help.

@Gridley  O.k.  I appreciate it.  I spoke to a therapist a couple months ago.  I guess I should keep trying.  It's hard to find someone who understands the withdrawals from anti-depressant.  The first therapist recommended I go back on them but that was in my first few weeks of withdrawal and I was in really bad shape.

I would keep trying.  Sometimes you have to gently educate them.  The U.K. recently changed its official guidelines to recognize that severe withdrawal from antidepressant was a reality.  If you find a therapist that's at all receptive or at least not totally closed (in which case they probably wouldn't be the right person for you) you could print out the information in the following link and highlight the important part.

UK's NICE health guidelines now caution about severe and ...

O.k. Thank you. That's good. I can't help wondering what happened to me?  The first year I took Celexa in high school it helped but then I stopped caring about anything.  I tapered off 3 months ago.  Now I guess I have brain fog.  I don't know.

Hi Suffering.  I was able to find a psychologist who did his internship in a medical center under a psychiatrist, so he had an understanding of brain physiology and the effect of SSRI's, SNRI's, and benzos.  He also believed in and dealt with withdrawal.  He was a lifesaver during my taper and after, using EMDR and teachuing CBT techniques to manage my anxiety and OCD after I finished my taper.  I'd definitely ask some detailed questions for any potential new therapist; the right one can make a tremendous difference in your recovery.

I have an appointment to talk to someone from NorCal tomorrow although he is moving his practice to Oregon.  I met him one time before.  I am nervous about talking to anyone but it's either that or go back on medication.  I came close to starting a new anti but I'm also afraid that's how I got here in the first place.

Its always awkward and difficult to talk to someone about mental issues for the first time.  But a good professional will quickly put you at your ease.  The first time I met with my therapist,  we spent some time going over the ground rules and he reassured me he wouldn't discount or disregard anything I said.  Just having someone to listen to my fears and concerns without judging borught me a lot of relief.

@gridley.  So I just turned 21.  I don't want to do anything.  People expect me to socialize and drink but I can't.  I don't feel good.  I don't want to drink because I'm afraid it will interfere with the drug.  It's been 2 months since reinstating 1 mg of celexa.  Should I increase the dosage to 2 mg?  I'm not sure what to do.  I don't see any change and I feel like it's a time of my life I should be with friends and enjoying myself.

@Gridley In early March I reinstated 1 mg of liquid Celexa.  So it's been a few months now.  First, it was a fast taper in January, then after a couple of months of hell I did the reinstatement in March.  I can't say that I feel better, barely functioning but better than I was in January.  Hate that I ruined my life taking this medication.  Trying to stay positive.  Had my 21st birthday last month in the midst of the pandemic staying home.  I work part-time for a couple of hours a day.  That's about it.  Worried about my future.  Need to get back to college.  So should I taper to 0.9 mg now?

It's good that you're better than before. I'd recommend you hold where you are for another month and let's see how you're doing then.  It can take a reinstatement several months for things to settle down.  Please keep me updated on how you're doing.

Hi Cathnz

Sorry I didn't respond sooner--I didn't get a notice you tagged me.

The psychologist I've been seeing since 2008 was actually the second one I saw regularly.  The first was nice but he had no experience in the side effects of and withdrawal from SSRI's.  At my first appointment with the new one, I explained I was in mid-taper and asked questions about his view of meds.  He doesn't militanly oppose them but he said they are limited in their ability to help long-term.  I also asked him about CBT; I'd bought a couple books on it but wanted to really understand it.  He's experienced in CBT and EMDR, which really helped.  He also kept our session down to earth and practical instead of discussing a lot of theory.  I'm glad I did some prep work and knew what questions to ask before I met with him.

It's good that you're better than before. I'd recommend you hold where you are for another month and let's see how you're doing then.  It can take a reinstatement several months for things to settle down.  Please keep me updated on how you're doing.

A tardy happy birthday from me!

@Gridley I guess I'm ready to reduce from 1 mg. to 0.9 mg.  IDK.  Don't notice feeling better.  Still want to isolate and stay in bed all day.  Worried about my future but I can't go back to college right now.  My memory is terrible.  Does it get better?

Started Celexa as a sophmore in high school around 2014/2015

I think I took Vyvance 2016/2017

Increased Celexa to 40 mg by 2018

Began to taper Celexa on 12/29/19, cut 1/4 of the 40 mg per week

Last dose of Celexa on 1/19/20

Reinstated 1 mg liquid Celexa in March 2020

Currently still taking 1 mg liquid Celexa

I would hold another month and let's see then.  A good long hold is very healing to the system.

@GridleyIt's been 11 months since I originally started the fast taper of Celexa last January.  Tapered off in 4 weeks.  Then reinstated 1mg of liquid in March.  I finished that taper as well.  I'm a little more functional in that I am able to go to work at a local restaurant.  It's more than I can do last year when I started this process.  I didn't work for about 10 months.  I was also able to finish one college class online but it was just a refresher course.  I started the Fall semester with Chemistry and I felt so much anxiety about it that I quickly knew I had to withdraw.

Still hard to believe my body is still fighting these withdrawals.  The worst part is not feeling happy and uncomfortable in social situations.

It's very good that you're more functional and can work. That's a very encouraging sign that you're healing.   Don't worry about the chemistry. I can see how it would produce anxiety.  You will take the course when you're read.

@GridleyAfter 1 year of being off Celexa with little change, I wanted to try Wellbutrin to see if I would feel better.  I took 100mg daily for 2 months.  I don't notice any changes at all.  I don't feel any better but lucky I don't feel worse either.  I gave it a shot but now I'm changing mind and want to get off it.  What do you recommend for tapering 100mg Wellbutrin.

Below is our link on tapering Wellbutrin.  As with all psychiatric drugs, we recommend tapering by no more than 10% of current dose every 4 weeks.  Unlike other antidepressants, sometimes Wellbutrin can be tapered a bit faster than the regular 10%/4 weeks schedule. This is explained in the link.

Tips for tapering off buproprion (Wellbutrin, SR, XR, XL)

Please update your signature to reflect when you started the Wellbutrin, the dosage and whether you are taking the SR, XR or XL version of the drug.  The link above explains how to taper off each of these versions.  Please also include the date you stopped the Celexa.   Here is the link to update your drug signature.
