haldol: shouldn't be taken for long periods of time

I took haldol for maybe 2 weeks and can't sit down for long periods of time.  It could be a lot worse, I can still drive but this is not ideal.  I believe this is either tardive dyskinesia or akathasia but I'm not sure.

Anyways just be careful with the doctors/NP I should have not have taken it for long periods of time.  I would advise staying away from it all together because even with taper I will have this side effect.

Welcome to SA, haldol.  I'm sorry you're experiencing these symptoms.

From what you describe it it sounds more like akathisia.  Here are two links for your information:

Akathisia vs restlessness, anxiety, agitation - Symptoms and ...

Tardive dyskinesia or involuntary movements - Symptoms and ...

We don't recommend a lot of supplements on SA, as many members report being sensitive to them due to our over-reactive nervous systems, but two supplements that we do recommend are magnesium (glycinate is a good form) and omega 3 (fish oil). Many people find these to be calming to the nervous system.

Magnesium, nature's calcium channel blocker

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil)

Add in one at a time and at a low dose in case you do experience problems.

This is your Introduction topic, where you can ask questions and connect with other members.  We're glad you found your way here.

Hi haldol, glad that you found the site.  I have never taken this drug but know some people who have, and after what I was told I feel like it should be phased off the market.  I am sorry to read of your experience. I think Gridley is right, it does sound like akathisia, which I have had before too (took many drugs that caused it, for a much longer period of time.)

The good news is that if you were only on two weeks then your recovery is basically assured.

I am not a medical professional and nothing I say is a medical opinion or meant to be medical advice, please seek a competent and trusted medical professional to consult for all medical decisions.
