This is for people who are about to start or have already started a course of SSRIs.

....

This study aims to document your personal experience with your antidepressant medication. We are hoping to collect information on any changes you experience throughout your treatment, including depressive symptoms, psychological well-being and any side effects that may occur.

You are being invited to take part in a research study involving patients taking SSRI antidepressants. Please carefully read the full information sheet found here and take your time to think and discuss with others if you wish. It is important that you fully understand why the research is being done and what it will involve for you as a participant before you decide if you wish to take part.

If you feel there is anything you are unclear about or would just like some more information, please do not hesitate to contact us. Take your time to decide whether you wish to take part or not.

For information on SSRI antidepressants please see the NHS website: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/ssri-antidepressants/, other forms of antidepressant medication are eligible but please ensure that your medication works through a mechanism involving the neurotransmitter serotonin before signing up.

A short study overview is provided below:

Study Overview

The aim of the study is to collect data on the effects and effectiveness of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants, and related drugs, to treat a range of disorders, including depression and anxiety, and to compare these data to those of other potential interventions for depression. If you do decide to take part, you will be involved in the study for 1 year. This will involve completing an online baseline questionnaire based on how you remember feeling before you began your medication, then weekly questionnaires for 6 weeks, with optional 6- and 12-month follow-up surveys, if you are unable to complete any of the questionnaires in one run you can save your progress and complete it later. You will be sent one email every week for 6 weeks to remind you to complete the next questionnaire, please attempt to complete each questionnaire as soon as possible when you receive these emails – ideally that day or within a few days, please try to not let 7 days pass before completing each questionnaire. Each questionnaire will take 10-25 minutes to complete. If you have been taking your medication for a long time (1 year+) please attempt to complete at least the baseline survey and the week 1 survey so that your data can be of most value to us, allowing us to compare how you felt before commencing your medication to how you feel currently.

Throughout the surveys there may be certain topics that may cause you to feel uncomfortable or distressed. Matters including sexual dysfunction, suicidal thoughts and political perspectives are covered in some of the surveys. However, all questions asked throughout the entire study are optional (except essential information) and therefore you are free to skip any questions that you feel you do not want to answer.

Inclusion criteria:

  • You must be currently taking an SSRI (or similar) antidepressant medication that will last for at least 6 weeks longer
  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • You must be able to understand English
