Moderator Onmyway Posted January 29, 2022 Moderator Share Posted January 29, 2022 Nitrates and nitrites are food preservatives often used in cured meats, hot dogs, sausage, deli meats. They are carcinogenic but may also have mood effects. I recently had hot dogs which I love but which I don't eat often and was wondering if it is not upping my symptoms - esp restlessness and anxiety. There is some animal study evidence that it might do that but it is preliminary. Has anyone else felt effects? Note: In organic food chemical versions of nitrates and nitrites may be substituted by celery powder or other natural alternatives that still contain nitrates and nitrites "Nothing so small as a moment is insurmountable, and moments are all that we have. Moderator Emeritus ChessieCat Posted January 29, 2022 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted January 29, 2022 Q: Did you check to see if they contain a flavour enhancer? Many savoury processed foods do. MSG is a neurotoxin. I don't know about the other flavour enhancers, but it would not surprise me if they are. * NO LONGER ACTIVE on SA * MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: (6 year taper) 0mg Pristiq on 13th November 2021 ADs since ~1992: 25+ years - 1 unknown, Prozac (muscle weakness), Zoloft; citalopram (pooped out) CTed (very sick for 2.5 wks a few months after); Pristiq: 50mg 2012, 100mg beg 2013 (Serotonin Toxicity) Tapering from Oct 2015 - 13 Nov 2021 LAST DOSE 0.0025mg Post 0 updates start here My tapering program My Intro (goes to tapering graph) VIDEO: Antidepressant Withdrawal Syndrome and its Management
Moderator Onmyway Posted January 29, 2022 Author Moderator Share Posted January 29, 2022 Yep, it has MSG! I think this accounts for the level of my symptoms the last two days and before Christmas! Moderator Emeritus ChessieCat Posted January 29, 2022 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted January 29, 2022 You are welcome. I'm glad you now know to avoid it. Many years ago I got hooked on Sour Cream and Chive Pringles which contain MSG. I definitely could not stop at one. I don't know it if was the MSG that got me hooked or the crunch (I was going through a lot of stress at the time) or possibly both, or with what I have learned now, possibly carb addiction. I ended up with a major MSG intolerance (anaphylaxis) which resulted in me being intolerant to natural glutamates. After several years I was able to reintroduce the natural glutamate foods but I steer clear of MSG and try to avoid the other "E600-700" numbers which are flavour enhancers. If you use chicken salt that contains MSG which is why it makes chips/fries taste so yummy. Some artificial sweeteners are excitotoxins. Looks like it might be aspartame: Aspartame, also known by the brand names NutraSweet and Equal, is a common and popular artificial sweetener. It's also a powerful excitotoxin.
Chompoo
@Onmyway did you go into a wave after this MSG episode? How long did it last? I had some rice crackers a few days ago and only realised afterwards that they contained MSG. Since then, I have been having a lot of difficulty with insomnia. Had zero hour sleep on the first night, some sleep on the second night, and still strugglig with falling asleep on the third night. Wondering when will this end. It feels like I've been thrown way back in my recovery and starting from ground zero again. Jan 29, 2023 - Took my one and only dose of Mirtazapine (15 mg). Developed an immediate adverse reaction with list of withdrawal-like symptoms.
