Maybe because I have seen one movie in two years and it was The Hunger Games which I specifically after my expectations were blown out of the water by Jennifer Lawrence's performance -- from the trailer mind you. Anyway, I saw the trailer and right now, it resonates with me. Maybe you too? This is the first time I've ever heard characters talk about Seroquel and Xanax in a movie trailer. It looks smart. It looks uplifting. 50% chance I see it in the theater. Two movies, two Jennifer Lawrence movies, no coincedence. If she's still working in 30 years, like Meryl Streep, I will not be surprised. I was tired. Prozac pooped out, switch to Cymbalta 3/2006. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder due to mania 6/2006--then I was taken abruptly off Cymbalta and didn't know I had SSRI withdrawal. Lots of meds for my intractable "bipolar" symptoms. Zyprexa started about 9/06, mostly 5mg. Tapered 4/12 through12/29/12 Wellbutrin. Even told how of his mentally ill son and how drugs have benefited him. Then I read how the guy, David Russell, is a notorious screaming lunatic to work with -- which is why he doesn't make a lot of movies. He got punched out by George Clooney for being an abusive maniac filimg "Three Kings" and after he went ballistic on Lilly Tomlin in another movie (I H Huckabees), he didn't work for a while. Sounds like he's likely to reach adn preach incorrect conclusions. I'd bet he takes a bail of psychiatric meds himself. His movie has Jennifer Lawrence in it though. If I saw movies, I'd probably see it. But I am perfectly willing to walkout or stop a movie if it becomes trigerring. I could only take 30 minutes of The Black Swan in 2011. I've seen interviews recently with the filmmaker and he is definitely promoting the *mental health awareness /erase the stigma /open dialogue* message which equates to more drug use, of course. We should start a MOVIE WARNING thread for people in early withdrawal. The Black Swan would definitely be in that thread! Nothing surprises me these days as far as product placement. There was a Nokia ad in Star Trek which is set way in the future. Nokia will be lucky to still be in business in 10 yrs, so the jokes on them. I too caught the mention of psych meds in the trailer. But I haven't seen the movie so can't say much more. Also, a lot of movies -- from what I've gathered -- are so sadistic these days. i heard horrible things about the Batman movies being very dark and disturbing. Also there is a whole sub-genre of disgusting 'torture-porn' horror flicks that are unwatchable. I had a friend who loved the SAW movies. My sensitivity to harsh content has become very high along with sensitivity to sound and visual effects. Life of Pi was 3D - BAD idea. Perhaps there's a silver lining to this sensitivity (pun intended). Brandy Posted February 7, 2013 Share Posted February 7, 2013 I saw Silver Linings Playbook (and about ten million other movies in the last couple of months or so!) (including Life of Pi three times - all in 3D!). I think my eyes are getting very tiny like a mole's and I blink a lot when encountering daylight, lol. Frankly, I found it very light, although it was very well-made with excellent actors and production values. Not a deep exploration of mental illness (and certainly not of meds) if that's what anyone was expecting. I was annoyed by the blithe shallow reference to Seroquel, but it was not at all a major element of the film, nor should it have been given the genre (see my previous sentence). I don't want to give spoilers to those who haven't seen it, but if I remember correctly, was really just a part of the early setup of the plot. It's basically a character-oriented relationship movie. If anyone wants to read the script, it's online (pdf) and legal to read for personal use: The Weinstein Company Click on the poster art for Silver Linings and you'll see a link for "screenplay" toward the top right of the page. The script may not be up too much longer - it's there for awards season, and the studios usually take scripts down at some point after that. I was "TryingToGetWell" (aka TTGW) on paxilprogress. I also was one of the original members here on Surviving Antidepressants I had horrific and protracted withdrawal from paxil, but now am back to enjoying life with enthusiasm to the max, some residual physical symptoms continued but largely improve. The horror, severe derealization, anhedonia, akathisia, and so much more, are long over. My signature is a temporary scribble from year 2013. I'll rewrite it when I can. Product placement. I can get over the fact that the two main characters, Pat and Tiffany, say actual names of psychiatric medication but when I saw a pill in Pat’s hand that clearly said “Seroquel” I became angry that AstraZeneca got such great advertising for their product. How many people will now want to go on Seroquel because they saw it in a movie? Ugh. You can’t say that wasn’t done on purpose because they could have easily given a pill that didn’t say the brand name on it! 2. Unrealistic drug effects. This is most likely nit picky but as someone who takes Seroquel and has been on 1 other antipsychotic, what are the odds that Pat could take a Seroquel in the morning and then go for a jog and carry on with the rest of his day? I know that a drug can effect me differently than it can effect you but antipsychotics are known for sedation and if they are not sedating you then you probably need to switch drugs completely because that’s not the point of them. Antipsychotics are usually taken at night. When I take my dose of 12.5mg in the morning, oh my goodness, I’m not jogging, I’m sleeping (which is why I can’t take it in the morning). This just ties into my overall annoyance that psychiatric medication effects are usually incorrect in movies. This causes people to think that, for example, antidepressants are literal “happy pills” that make you smile and bounce off the walls. This complicates things because that is not what happens and I would hate for people to think something is wrong with them because of how a movie portrayed a drug inaccurately. It's hard to tell by glancing at the screenway, to tell extents, but I'd agree that the behavior of the characters on the drugs is inconsitent with how the drug works. The other characters frequently comment on how much weight Pat (the main guy) has lost, though he doesn't seem to have taken seroquel the whole time. Pat says he resists the drugs b.c of wait gain and lethargy. It was unclear to me at what points in the story he is on meds. I agree with Brandy that the struggle with meds aren't a major plot point like in a Beautiful Mind. If I didn't know to be looking for it, I probably would have missed the few references. However Pat takes up jogging, competes in a dance performance, continues to look like a fit movie star, gets in some physical scuffles... Basically acts anithetical to ypical actions common amongst seroquel zombies. (I used to take this one. It sucks. I gained so much weight and spent days completely zonked. I wish I had Bradley Cooper's consitution!!! That's from my perusal. My interest in seeing film is also zapped.
