kaza31- withdrawing from effexor xr 150mg

so I came across a programme from Dr Brene Brown on Oprah winfrey lifeclass show.. its about her study of vunerablility, worthiness and shame..

"She said vunerability is not about winning or losing is about having the courage to stand up in life and be seen"

this is something ive struggled with from the age of 19, having depression and dealing with feeling vunerability  and shame regards it and that it somehow impaired me as a person in the eyes of others.  that they saw me as fragile, weak etc... Now dealing with the withdrawal from meds, I have the same vunerability and shame coming through sometimes of how others see me.. How some extended family members don't understood, who criticise my withdrawal and say it cant be that hard..  Who say that at my age I should be at a certain stage in my life, married with kids etc. Who say pull yourself together....  who don't understand how hard it all is, that some days im fighting just to get through another day when I feel so bad......

so here is the quote she mentions from Theadore Rosavellt 1910:::  (with regards the word arena he is describing life)

Its not the critic who counts;

its not the man/woman who points out how the strong man/woman stumbles,

or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.

The credit belongs to the man/woman who is actually in the arena,

whose face is marred with dust

and sweat and blood;

who strives valiantly......

who in the end may know the triumph of high achievement

but when he/she fails he/she does so daring and  greatly.......

One of Dr Browne quotes is:

"if your not in the arena getting your butt kicked im not interested in your feedback"

these two quotes really resonated with me.. it really is true that unless someone else is going through a hard situation like us all with withdrawal, then we really shouldn't be interested in what they have to say as they will never have any concept...

Let them criticise,  we are the ones taking a risk in life, being courageous coming off are meds, trying to make positive changes in our lives.. And in the end when we do achieve it, it is us who will become stronger, and more resilient people as we have faced one of the hardest challenges in our lives...

im going to write this quote and stick it on my wall, the next time someone criticises me for my withdrawal ill always remember it .....

2010-withdrew from Effexor 150mg to zero over a period of 9 months

thanks for the positive  message mr anxious I needed it

I usually try to be positive most days and look on the bright side of how well im doing but have had a rough few weeks..

between have the wisdom tooth infection, trying to sort out the thyroid problem and hoping the meds start kicking in and giving me relief from the horrible sympotms and this withdrawal it just got a bit too much..

im not reducing anymore of my meds for another while I just couldn't handle it at this point, want to get stronger in my body and mind first before starting again.. maybe in a couple of weeks...

I have to give myself a kick up the bum,, and stop the feeling sorry for myself... I only realised today how my four year old nephew is even picking up that im unwell with my withdrawal etc and keep feeling sick and not being myself...

Each day now that school is back I pick my four year old  nephew up after school and take him to the park to play football.. he always improves my mood..

this past two days however ive been unwell and just didn't have the energy after volunteering at the school at all. I just wanted to go home and rest...

He called to the house with his mum after school today and said

"auntie Karen why did you not come to school today I missed you so much"

I told him " I missed you too but I have a sore tummy today, I need to have a wee rest in bed"

He said " Auntie Karen i need to  give you strawberry medicine like I had you keep being sick all the time"

I just said "yeah the doctor is going to give me medicine like yours to make me better and then I can take you to the park"

He said "  No Auntie Karen im going to give you all my money in my money box, and you can buy strawberry medicine and you want be sick  ever ever again"

I said " aww thankyou you are such a good boy"

He said " yeah now we can make me a new Auntie Karen"

it just upset me because I didn't realise that he is picking up on me being sick more often than normal now and he senses something isn't right.. im definitely going to make a conscious effort that when he is around not to let him see me unwell, i don't want him being upset or worried.. i want him to see me as the fun loving auntie full of energy and vitality like i was before my withdrawal and who will be again some day soon..

hope your feeling well mr anxious

take care

hi lexy

haven't been on much in the last two weeks.. im still at 87mg of Effexor, have held at this for a few weeks so far just couldn't handle any withdrawal symptoms with this thyroid problem..

got results of my thyroid antibody test and it came back that my antibodies are high... im due now to go for a ultrascan of my thyroid on the 23rd.. I have been on the levothyroxine 25mcg for just over two weeks and haven't as yet noticed any improvement..

This past week my sleep has been dreadful im not sure if its the thyroid  problem or withdrawal related still... it was probably four or five In the morning before I would fall asleep because I was just so exhausted.. Before that every time I went to fall asleep, I had numerous body jerks, sweating like mad also as if my breathing was funny, I didn't lose breath like gasping or anything.. more like I missed a breath, hard to explain..

I have had it before as when I looked back at my posts I had it around the 16th September the same thing happening with sleep...

Also I had  a strange incident with memory yesterday.. ive always been known in my family to have a great memory recall, remember so much stuff from when I was younger etc, just always remember things..  I literally couldn't remember if it was Friday or saturday, I know people get mixed up in days, or when they go on holiday there days get mixed up and they cant tell what day it is etc.. This was more like I couldn't figure it out. like my mind went confused for a minute, it didn't last that long.. it was a strange feeling...

Ive also been having weird vision problems, mainly when I wake out of my sleep, things are a bit distorted and like ive described in a previous post, like distorted shapes (like when you look through a kalidascope ) it goes away in about a minute, plus I get like a crawling sensation at the left side of my head at the same time..

its seems that I last reduced down to 87mg on the 6th September  and most be still getting some withdrawal symptoms..

Either that or its my thyroid causing some problems I honestly don't know..

How have you been feeling yourself??

all the best

Hi Kaza

When my thyroid is out of balance I have sleep disruption, memory issue and challenges with my vision.  You may be suffering a combination of both thyroid out of balance and some lingering withdrawal symptoms, but a lot of it sounds thyroid related to me.

I hope you can some answers and successful thyroid treatment soon.

hi lexy

thanks for your message

its good to know someone else can relate to those symptoms, the breathing thing is so strange.

im 31 and this past while between withdrawal and health problems I feel more like a 80 year old.. my grandmother is in better health than me and more energy lol

with you being only 18 it most feel very hard at times?? I bet it has made you mature a lot what you have had to go through, not many 18 year olds are having to deal with withdrawal, but there is no doubt it will make you a more stronger, resilient person in years to come..

what way have you been feeling lately yourself? you have done well so far to get down to 48.75mg...

I have Hashimoto's and I went on a gluten free diet.  High thyroid antibodies in my observation do tend to mean that the thyroid is currently under attack and gluten intolerance is often found to be the cause.  There have been some studies that show a high correlation between Hashitmoto's thyroiditis and gluten intolerance. Google "studies gluten intolerance and Hashimoto's disease."

Your night sweats could be related to withdrawals or a hormonal imbalance, but not likely thyroid.  I am a member of several thyroid/adrenal patient advocate sites and just today I read where night sweats are more likely related to a progesterone imbalance than a thyroid imbalance.  But you probably only want to adjust one thing at a time.

In my personal experience I actually found that avoiding refined sugar relieved my night sweats.  Instead of refined sugar I use evaporated cane juice or stevia.  It is easy enough to try to reduce your refined sugar intake (assuming you haven't already done so) and see if it minimizes those symptoms.

I got the right treatment for "my" thyroid situation and I feel 100X better than I did when I first found out I had a thyroid problem.  I have energy, I sleep well, I am not cold all the time, my incredible ability to recall information has returned, I have no aches or pains, my skin isn't super dry, my allergies other than my allergy to gluten are non-existent, I have stamina, I have the ability to focus on work or solving problems, and I have motivation.  I was fortunate to find a doctor who prescribed natural desiccated thyroid to treat my hypothyroid condition.  However, mainstream medicine was only able to do so much for me and I joined some patient advocate sites that helped me find my complete healing path.

I am a fan of natural desiccated thyroid also known as Armour, Erfa, or NatureThroid.  However, I believe it is easier to find a doctor to prescribe these in the US than in the UK.  I'd like to suggest that you look into a thyroid patient advocate group and I highly recommend this one in the UK: http://www.tpa-uk.org.

thanks so much for your message Karma

I appreciate it

on my next appointment I must mention to the doctor about the natural dessicated thyroid and see what she says...

so I went and got some gluten free bread.. most other foods with gluten I don't mind having to give up and stop eating, but bread I just love lol

I didn't realise that gluten free food was so expensive its not fair at all.. the bread I bought was £2.90 and not a lot of slices in it..

im thinking I might just start making my own gluten free bread it would work out cheaper...

will have to look online and see some recipes

I also will have to research and write a list down of all food with gluten in them, I didn't realise the amount of food that contains gluten.. its crazy

all the best

hi lexy

hope your feeling well today

touch wood I haven't had the breathing thing going to sleep  since sunday thank god

this week ive been getting to sleep easier, staying asleep for longer, however I do still waken at least 3 or 4 times in the night and have vivid dreams..

im feeling a bit more positive and contented this week..

im not sure however if this is the fact ive held at 87mg effexor for this past five weeks,, or that my thyroid medication I have started taking two nearly three weeks ago is starting to kick in.. maybe its a combination of both

I have noticed that the extreme tiredness isn't as bad as it was..

how has your week been for you??

Hi

I'm glad to hear good news!

I've been awful. Last Saturday I went out of town and forgot the effexor!!

I'll never do that again.

Before Saturday I had started to feel a little better too. My headaches had dissipated

In intensity. My mood swings were also better and less frequent.

All this week I've been feeling nausea, dizziness, headaches again.

Today I've felt somewhat better.

I haven't felt the skipped breaths either, thank God.

I didnt think one missed and one late dose would get me to this point. Do you think it could have

Been taking the missed doses together?

I know so well about the extreme fatigue you talk about.

I see you have been staying at your current dose of 87mg for 5 weeks. I have held

At my current dose for 5 weeks also, now I'm not sure when I can drement again.

At my current dose also about 5 weeks. I had planned on decrementing before missing my dose, now I don't know when

I will decrementing again.

Stay well as you encourage me

I'm glad you are feeling better Kaz, it's a long road this withdrawal but you'll get there in the end.

Extreme exhaustion was a bit thing for me on effexor but got better as I got the dosage down,

each drop I got just a little better and I hope it goes that way for you too. I do think that I cut a

little too fast and should have maybe waited a wee bit longer between cuts but that is hindsight,

I hope you continue to get better, it's been hard for you with the thyroid problem too.

I HATE gluten free bread but found the new Warburtons one better than most. I avoided gluten for

a long time thinking I was intolerant to wheat but it turned out to be the yeast that I don't tolerate so

no bread at all for me for a while!

**I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge.

Different drugs occasionally (mostly benzos) 1976 - 1981 (no problem)

1993 - 2002 in and out of hospital. every type of drug + ECT. Staring with seroxat

2002  effexor.

Tapered  March 2012 to March 2013, ending with 5 beads.

Withdrawal April 2013 . Reinstated 5 beads reduced to 4 beads May 2013

Restarted taper  Nov 2013

OFF EFFEXOR Feb 2015    :D

Tapered atenolol and omeprazole Dec 2013 - May 2014

Tapering tramadol, Feb 2015 100mg , March 2015 50mg

 July 2017 30mg.  May 15 2018 25mg

Taking fish oil, magnesium, B12, folic acid, bilberry eyebright for eye pressure.

My story http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4199-hello-mammap-checking-in/page-33

Lesson learned, slow down taper at lower doses. Taper no more than 10% of CURRENT dose if possible

Is there anything one can take for extreme fatigue?

I've had that since the beginning I started with this so-called medicine.

Sometimes I would like to get up and do something but I just feel my whole body achy and so tired that I just can't do it.

yeah its been difficult for me with the thyroid problem too, however at least I now know a lot of the symptoms I was feeling wasn't actually withdrawal it was my thyroid and they seem to be a tiny bit better..

I have to go back in two weeks for another blood test, to see if thyroid meds need to be increased etc

Hopefully like you say the extreme exhaustion will lessen as my dosage decreases..

I  have been buying the free from range gluten free bread from tescos, its ok I suppose, must try the warburtons one you suggest..

im looking to your posts for encouragement as you have done so well to get down to the 3 beads you are at.. I know its been a tough time for you, but you are so close to finally being off your meds and im really inspired by you.. its good to have someone I can identify with... I pray I too get to where you are someday soon..

Are you getting excited for your holidays now???

hi lexy

hope your feeling ok

with regards the extreme exhaustion, for me personally its something that since I first started the meds has always been there.. for me that meant I had to take extra care of myself and really push myself to do things even though I felt so tired...  nobody can quite understand the tiredness feeling unless they have been experiencing it too..

in the past and even more so now that im going through med reduction.. I pay extra attention to being good to my body and mind..

some things that have worked for me are... eating healthily, I eat three meals a day, with two healthy snacks in between like fruit, nuts or yoghurt etc,

I take a glass of water before breakfast, with breakfast, at lunch, dinner etc, to make sure im getting enough water consumption..

since my withdrawal began in February ive been taking an omega 3,6,9 supplement and also a multivitamin one.. ( im not advising that you need to take these its just something I decided to try to see if it helped)

I make sure I get outside everyday, whether its out walking, etc or on days when withdrawal is bad even if it is just sitting out in the garden with a book to read anything to get some fresh air..

I try to exercise in some form each day, mainly going for a walk...

do something enjoyable for yourself each day, go for coffee with your friend, go to the cinema, visit relatives, get your nails done, just do something rather that staying in the house

I found that if I stayed in the house not doing much, it made me more tired and didn't feel like doing anything.. once you get out for a while it changes your focus and you find you actually feel better for it and it improves your mood.

also keeping active during the day, will mean your more tired come bedtime and you will sleep better..

mainly what im trying to say is when your feeling exhausted, you just don't feel like doing anything other than lying around.. I know the feeling myself.. But really try to push yourself to get up and moving..

for eg i use to say to myself "" im so tired i just want to lie on the sofa here and sleep"

then i began changing my self talk i would say "ok i feel so tired, but im going to make myself get up and go for a 15 min walk to the shop, if i still feel tired when i get back well then i can lie back down on the sofa and sleep""..  so i would go for my walk and 9 time out of 10 when i got back i felt more energised and fresher, and so i would set myself another task like.. "ok for the next half an hour im going to go clean my bedroom etc"

Gradually i found that the more tasks i set myself and completed,  i felt good about myself, i felt more positive, became less tired.. And finally began just doing the tasks anyway...

some times through the withdrawal your so exhausted your really do feel you need to take a nap. and that's ok to do it,,. However i try to only allow myself and hour at the most.. as usually it would then affect me sleeping at night..

i think your doing great anyway lexy,  look how far you have come your down to 48.75mg...

i have a niece at 18, and if she was going through the same thing you are right now i would be telling her the same stuff, and how proud i was of her... i would also be given her lots and lots of hugs,,

i hope you have someone who is doing that for you too,, but if not " im proud of you lexy" you are inspiring me..

sending you lots and lots of hugs

take care

so a quick update

I had my ultrasound on my thyroid, I apparently have a couple of nodules on my thyroid.. though the doctor said the tissue in the thyroid looks healthy..  Have to wait and see what the next step is.. I think ill be getting the needle into it for a biopsy.. so I hope things are ok

symptoms from the underactive thyroid have only slightly improved since starting meds, one thing however is my hair is falling out a lot, right from the root.. concerned about this...

with regards Effexor, I am still holding at 87mg for the meantime, till things get better for me....

  • 2 weeks later...

so the radiologist sent the results of my scan  back to my gp, she called me in for results.. I apparently have nodules as I mentioned before and also have a condition called Chronic thyroiditis I think this can also be known as Hasimoto's...The scan showed I having scarring which apparently I have to be careful about, in extreme cases it can cause pressure on the trachea so can cause breathing difficulties and choking sensations.. I only have a feeling of something stuck in my throat at the moment but was told just to be aware of it..

The pain in  my neck area is annoying at present, constant achy feeling

I have been referred to an endocrinologist to discuss getting biopsy of nodules and to find out what may be the cause of the Hasimoto's etc..

I did try a test of my own with regards going gluten free, Ive heard others say it helps... so ive been trying going gluten free with regards bread etc to see how my body responds, I didn't think it was doing much.. until I decided for a couple of days to go back eating normal bread etc, after the first day I noticed the pain in my neck worse, my digestion was horrible, lots of bloating and wind, plus my fatigue increased a lot.. So im back going gluten free....

hopefully I will get to the bottom of it all soon and possibly my thyroid meds will be adjusted, because as of right now the overwhelming tiredness is getting to me, as well as the hair loss.. I feel horrible, and don't even want to look in the mirror because I feel fat, puffy faced, look so tired, cant bear to look at how much of my hair has fallen out.. I just don look the same girl I did a year ago and its getting to me...

that's why im holding with regards reducing the Effexor, as emotionally and physically I just couldn't cope with it...

please god I get a solution to it all soon

all the best

Kx

2010-withdrew from Effexor 150mg to zero over a period of 9 months

After six weeks became very ill

Doctor was adamant a reinstatement of 150mg was needed

I didn't know much of withdrawal symptoms at this time

February 2013- taking beads out of capsule 150mg

have taken out 112 beads equivalent to 30mg= 120mg taken

June 2013- Doctor visit- recommended given me 75mg capsules

take one in morning and one at night( take beads out of night one)

So am currently taking 75mg in morning and take beads out of 75mg night capsule to make up the other 45mg= 120mg

currently am down to taking 112.5mg..

 presently reduced down to 103mg

at 93mg

at 87mg
