I've recently realised for sure I am having symptoms of this akathesia. I don't have the urge to pace and move all the time which made me think I didn't have it, but I have these very dark scary intrusive distorted thoughts and a constant high alert state of panic and anxiety in the body, like someone's plugged me into a power socket. I get very angry very quickly and the smallest sound triggers an extreme fear response in me. This symptom really is next level horrible!

History of depression and anxiety. Symptoms of PTSD. 1998-1999 Venlafaxine 2006-2007 Prozac.2013-15 Sertraline 50mg. 2015 cross-tapered to citalopram 20mg. 2015-2021 Citalopram 20mg (brief increase to 30mg for 2/3 months in 2019. 01/2021 Dropped from 20mg to 10mg, back up to 20mg til June. 25/6/21 stopped CT. Started 50mg 5htp after a week without citalopram in the hope this would balance out my serotonin levels. After 3 days increased to 100mg 5htp. 11/7/21 Stopped 5htp with the intention of reinstating citalopram at 1mg. 16/7/21 Reinstated cit at 1mg. 2/8/21 Increased dose to 2mg. 28/11/21 10% reduction to 1.8mg.

8/12/21 2mg 6/1/22 1.8mg 10/2/22 1.6mg 13/5/22 1.5mg 4/6/22 1.55mg 4/7/22 1.4mg 4/8/22 1.25mg 1/11/22 1.1mg 3/3/23 1mg 18/4/23 0.9mg 2/6/23 0.8mg 4/10/23 0.7mg 11/11/23 jumped off @0.7mg started on 5htp 200mg -400mg, L-Theanine, and L-tyrosine 200mg. 25/11/23 came off 5-htp, l-tyrosine and l-Theanine. 24/12/23 went on 7.5mg mirtazapine. 27/12/23 stopped mirtazapine & reinstated citalopram @.35mg. 1/1/24 increased to 0.5mg. PTSD diagnosis October 2023. 11/11/23 started EMDR therapy for PTSD. Multiple unsuccessful attempts to taper off citalopram. Vegan, otherwise healthy lifestyle. Other medications; tapering off combined HRT. Other supplements; magnesium glycinate, vegan omega3. Completely OFF caffeine (since July 21). Finding it difficult to completely give up alcohol but haven’t had any since 25/12/23. Main symptoms; crushing depression, anhedonia/emotional anesthesia, irritability, rage, anxiety/fear, intrusive thoughts, cognitive fog, inability to focus, restlessness and some insomnia

When I had akathisia I found it helpful to wear compression garments, for example exercise clothing (leggings, performance tights, athleisure, that sort of thing) with compression effect. Especially on legs, lower body.

It felt soothing and helped calm me down.

1996-2018 - misc. polypharmacy, incl. SSRIs, SNRIs, neuroleptics, lithium, benzos, stimulants, antihistamines, etc. (approx. 30+ drugs)

2012-2018 - 10mg lexapro/escitalopram (20mg?)    Jan. 2018 - 10mg -> 5mg, then from 5mg -> 2.5mg, then 0mg  -->  July 2018 - 0mg

2017(?)-2020 - vyvanse/lisdexamfetamine 60-70mg    2020-2021 - 70mg down to 0mg  -->  July 2021 - 0mg

March-April 2021 - vortioxetine 5-10mg (approx. 7 weeks total; CT)  -->  April 28th, 2021 - 0mg

August 2021 - 2mg melatonin   August 1, 2022 - 1mg melatonin   March 31, 2023 - 0mg melatonin

2024 supplements update: electrolyte blend in water sipped throughout the day; 1 tsp fish oil blend w/ morning meal (incl. vit. A+D+E); calcium; vitamin C+zinc

Hi @Kat66! How are you? I feel exactly like that. Sending many positive thoughts for you to cross this path. And a question: did your akathisia get worse during the taper?

All the best,

Fantini

2012 - 2022: 10 years on Seroquel starting at 25mg and working up to 100mg (for insonia)

aug 2021 - dez 2021: decrease my dose by 50% every month (100 mg, 50 mg, 25 mg, 12,5 mg, 0 mg)

fev 2021: start 100 mg of Lyrica (for anxiety and it gives me akathisia)

mar 2022: decrease my dose by 50% (akathisia)

apr 2022: reinstart 0.5 mg Seroquel

Hello everyone -

I also got akathisia from a reinstatement of Paxil - normally a 10mg user- during wd my doc bumped me to 20mg - the next day I had it and isn't even know it - I stayed like that, for 4 months

The acute 24/7 horror and terror have disappeared - I never had the pacing - just felt like I was plugged in- like a light bulb

For the last year I get waves and windows -

For the last 2 months during my windows I feel 100% normal for a few days -

So I am very grateful

But I still get waves of this horrid depression and a fear (which is not coneneted to anything cognitively)

I hope these waves eventually stop -

I don't know that they ever will-

I feel like I will be stuck with them for the rest of my life -

It makes me really sad and it really interrupts my life

I no longer have any confidence

And I don't make plans any more since I never know when a wave will come

It is horrible depression

But it's better than akathisia

I'm so sick of feeling fear for no reason -

But outside of these waves I feel normal-

I have not used any supplements or meds at all-

I just slowly tapered my Paxil through it -

hello how are you doing? I have akathisia as well. I was wondering if yours has stopped ? @Vonnegutjunky

Hi @peaceandlove thanks for asking. I had a nice long window earlier this year but now, reading that quoted excerpt, I have exactly the same symptoms as when I wrote that.

Sorry you’re suffering too.

Hello peaceandlove. I'm so sorry you're in this situation.   I had akathisia for three years. I was given a long list of pills that cause it, so as it seems you only took one dose of Celexa and then the antibiotic, I'd expect you'll heal faster than I did.  FIY everyone I have spoken with over the years who took small doses and got akathisia recovered fully.  Don't lose hope!

I just hope I didn’t restart my recovery from these antibiotics because that’s what it sure feels like. I’m going to take things seriously as I can & just stay indoors. I wear sound proof headphones & limit my screen time which is hard because I’m in online college. I’m young I just want to go outside again & live life. I feel like I’m in jail 😞 thank you for responding back to me as it gives me encouragement. I read your story & you are soooo strong 💕 it takes a lot to come back & tell your story & be there for others so thank you for that :) @UnfoldingSky

It's not a problem. I wish so much that this never happened to anyone else.

I don't think this will set your recovery back to the beginning.

I am sure you are very strong to have come this far too.  Even a day of this is such agony. I remember having to wear headphones too, and could only really get out into nature, everywhere else was too stimulating.  I feel so sad for you. This is such an awful experience to go through and that they do it to young people...no words. I was lucky, happened to me after I finished uni.  Are you able to defer your studies maybe until it's cleared up ? I can't imagine having to do school with something like this.

It is an awful experience I had no idea withdrawal existed or drugs could cause this until it happened to me.
Yes, very true I love going out in nature & just sitting down making sure I get sunlight every now & then. Luckily for me this is my last semester & then I’m done the semester ends in about 3 weeks. So I’m going to stick it out so I can finish 😆 ones things for sure I won’t be looking for work right away lol I’m going to continue to relax at home. @UnfoldingSky

@peaceandlove, odds are on your side. You will make a full recovery sooner that you expect. You just really have to be really careful about drugs from now on. Psych drugs are an obvious no go, anti-nausea drugs are another (they work like psych drugs lol, that is what did me), and, yes, antibiotics.

Only take them if you really really need them. I had to in a couple of occasions (surgery and a very bad infection) and seem to tolerate penicillin derivatives .

December 2021 - Metoclopramide started. Akathisia symptoms start; Metoclopramide gets changed to PRN.

March 2022 - Akathisia diagnosed; Metoclopramide stopped; Propranolol 10mg x twice a day. Biperiden PRN (0.5mg to 1mg).

April 2022 - Tandospirone 30mg (10mg 3x day), Quetiapine 25mg (only taken once, immediate adr). Mirtazapine 7.5mg. . Discontinued Propranolol.

May 2022 - Mirtazapine upped to 15mg. Tandospirone cut to 2x 10mg. Low dose Depakote for the month; 100 to 200 to 100 to 0. Mirtazapine cut back to 11.75mg (3/4 of a 15mg pill).
June 2022 - Mirtazapine updose to 15mg. Tandospirone, Biperiden discontinued. Klonopin started PRN (0.5mg).
September 2022 - Akathisia slowly starts improving, WD/ADR normal sets in in mid September. Hold for 4 months.
March 2023 - Off mirtazapine; no Klonopin for 5 months either! Started quercetin (250mg x 2) to soften the histamine rebound.

May 2023 - Stopped quercetin and changed from magnesium carbonate to oxide - reacted badly. Reverted back to carbonate.
June 2023 - Added fish oil.
Current regimen: CALM Magnesium (Carbonate into Citrate) 175mg x2; Vitamin E 268mg x2; Fish oil (100mg Omega3; EPA 30mg; DHA 37mg)x2

Question, did you ever take beta blockers (like Propanalol) when you had the akathisia? @UnfoldingSky

Hey, I did take Propranolol.  It honestly didn't seem to do much to control akathisia but I was also on a low dose, so maybe it helps others.   FIY it has to be tapered too. (I did get off it, the taper was easy.)

@UnfoldingSky, was that total time or time after discontinuation?

It is such a hopeless condition, though people do heal, painfully and slowly.

Whenever I get hit by a worsening my heart sinks.

I'm so sorry you're experiencing it too.  I wish they would stop handing out pills that cause it.  You have my sympathy.

It's roughly three years that I had it. I had it on some drugs and off too.

September 2022 - Akathisia slowly starts improving, WD/ADR normal sets in in mid September. Hold for 4 months.
March 2023 - Off mirtazapine; no Klonopin for 5 months either! Started quercetin (250mg x 2) to soften the histamine rebound.

May 2023 - Stopped quercetin and changed from magnesium carbonate to oxide - reacted badly. Reverted back to carbonate.
June 2023 - Added fish oil.
Current regimen: CALM Magnesium (Carbonate into Citrate) 175mg x2; Vitamin E 268mg x2; Fish oil (100mg Omega3; EPA 30mg; DHA 37mg)x2

Hey, I did take Propranolol.  It honestly didn't seem to do much to control akathisia but I was also on a low dose, so maybe it helps others.   FIY it has to be tapered too. (I did get off it, the taper was easy.)

I feel like I need to take propranolol but I’m extremely scared to reacting to it @UnfoldingSky do you think it’s safe??? Idk what to do

April 2022- Only 1 celxa pill 10mg

had an adverse reaction & never took anymore again

Hey sorry I didn't see your question until now.

I spent ages researching various med effects, one thing that appears to be true of Propranolol is it doesn't seem to cause akathisia.  I took it with a benzo, I think over time the benzo was making akathisia worse. Took only a low dose of Propranolol (if you are going to try it definitely start at lowest possible dose).

It can cause other issues though, among them depression, amnesia, low blood pressure, rebound anxiety as you come off it.  It has to be tapered.  At least with this med though usually doctors know it has to be tapered (this is mentioned in pharmacy literature).   I had no trouble tapering at all, it was super easy for me to get off it.  I don't even think I had a negative effect at all during the taper.  I've heard of a few people who did have difficulty with a taper though, however they were on higher doses.

I think it can also cause heart problems. Oh and it can cause Raynaud's Phenomenon.  I did get that but it went away when I got off it.  Usually from what I understand that will only really be a problem if you live somewhere where you get a cold winter.

Also I honestly don't know if anyone suffers a paradoxical type of reaction on starting it which I assume is what you are worried about?  I can't think of anyone I have read reporting something like this but can't say for sure one way or another if that could happen.

This said if you have high blood pressure it may level it out to a more normal range, since it gets used for high BP normally.  I had fine BP before taking it, so it pushed it too low for me. I had to eat a LOT of salt to keep it up during the time I was on it.
