Hi all! Please sorry if my English is not perfect but it's not my mothertongue.

My story is short:

-"normal" (nobody is normal) life until 2011

-developed very painful abdominal pain, did all medical exams nothing came off....(now think it was a somatization...last year of university stress, end of long relation, new relation, no job opportunities)

-06/2012 really tired of pain, my gp decided to gave me cipralex 10mg

-I started gently, no side effects, pain slowly disappeared....but I started to gain weight +8kg, NO libido, NO intense feelings

-02/2015 started to stop it one drop per week, around 01/04/2015 free

-end of April, first days of May

sudden, huge, creepy anxiety(Never had it before)

heart punds super fast

suicide thoughts

blurry vision

sounds in brain

high sensitivity to low sounds

zero appetite

insomnia(Never had it before)

-tried to resist until end of May, my gp said to take it again, in 5 days I was again in 10mg and things got worse

all previous symtomps plus

****ing burning skin sensation (I'm going mad)

can't stop to move legs (creepy)

zero sensitivity "over there"

----that's my present condition, tomorrow I'll ask to stop these horrible meds, why the hell, why the hell I have accepted then, nobody told my about these effects. I'm sacred to death it will last FOREVER, I'm so terrified by the words forever chronic permanent... :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(

my questions are:

is it possible to develope these symptoms after 2-3 weeks quitting?

have you ever had burning skin sensation?

will these things lasts forever?  :(

Thanks to all, who will reads and who will answer, I'll also try to answer others!

Sincere hugs,

M.

Welcome -

You are going through "tardive (delayed) onset SSRI withdrawal", a very common occurrence with SSRI medications such as cipralex (lexapro).

When I stopped Prozac years ago, it took four months for symptoms to hit me, and just like you, they hit me strong. Many same symptoms as you.

I also went through the same thing with Lexapro.

Since you stopped your medications only 3 weeks ago, a moderator may suggest that you go back on a low dose of cipralex to reduce your withdrawal symptoms.

Most modern doctors don't warn us ahead of time that these medications do this to people because they don't understand how these medications work. They have been trained to think that your withdrawal symptoms are your "anxiety" coming back. But it's obvious that these symptoms are signs of withdrawal from these powerful drugs, since the symptoms are so severe, new, and strange.  And we all go through similar symptoms. Many doctors do understand "protracted SSRI withdrawal", many studies and books are published about it by doctors.

You will heal from these symptoms, but it will take awhile.

Hell hath no fury as an SSRI scorned.....

Prozac:   20 mg 1996 – May 2003 CT to 0 mg; by Aug 03 CRASH then protracted WD 3 yrs

Zoloft:    2004 few weeks;, CT to 0 mg

Effexor:  2005 few months CT to 0 mg; bad withdrawal.

Lexapro:  10 mg from 2009 – 2011; cut dose in half to:

Lexapro:    5 mg from 2011 – Feb. 2014; CT to 0 mg; 2 months of fatigue, followed by:
Aug - Oct 2014 Lexapro WD Insomnia Wave; sleeping very good from Nov 2014 - Nov 2015; broken sleep pattern Dec 2015 - Jan 2016

Dec 2014 - present: Brutal Lexapro WD ear ringing/head ringing/head pressure lasting for 14 months now.

I don't know much about withdrawal, but there's an Italian blog on PSSD:

http://disfunzionisessualipostssri.blogspot.pt/

September 2011 - 75 mg Effexor, 15 mg Mirtazapine
September 2012 - CT. Developed PSSD (mostly erectile dysfunction and diminished enjoyment of sex).
January 2016 - Symptoms persist, no improvements. In fact, things seem worse now than they were in the first year.

Hi Marta, welcome to SA. Your English is fine, better than some native English!  How long have you been taking 10mg?  Were you on 10mg before stopping?

Are you taking anything else, even supplements or over the counter drugs from the pharmacy?

Often when people have been off the drug for a while they become sensitive to it and react to the dose they were on before. We usually recommend a very low dose to start with, 1mg, to see how it goes. Some people feel better and stay on the tiny dose for a while to stabilise, others have to increase the dose a little. And some are unable to tolerate the drug at all after quitting but they are usually ones who have been off for longer.

10mg is obviously too high for you and you. If it has only been a few days you may be able to decrease the dose so you are not getting the same side effects. When you have stabilised you will be able to start a slow taper to get off the tiny dose..

http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/406-tapering-off-lexapro-escitalopram/

It will help us if you list the doses and taper in your signature for us.

Here is the link about reinstating to stop withdrawal symptoms.http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/7562-about-reinstating-and-stabilizing-to-reduce-withdrawal-symptoms/

Many people find that fish oil and magnesium help with withdrawal symptoms.

Thanks for the answers....really means a lot for me to hear about you!

Yes, nobody (doctors) ever told me that after many weeks out of drugs these horrible effects happen  (althought I had dismiss it properly)... I have discovered ALL in the last 1-2 weeks  :(
also if many many if us have these intense anxiety, breakdown, physical strange symptoms after quitting... it's unlikely that ALL of us have "normal" anxiety back ....

Please if someone else'd like to say me something I'll be very thankful!

to mammaP
I took 10mg for about 2yrs half
Before stopping I was 10-8mg (because I had drops I usually take 1-2 drops less)

Now I'm again on 10mg but the gp told me to go in 10mg in 5 days which I think it's too fast, so my symptoms are really bad -_-

I can't understand how I managed to go on with 50mg-40mg cipralex for nearly 4 years when I see many cases here like you marta (issues with only 10mg). I guess I'm paying for it now with protracted (maybe permanent) emotional anesthesia. You will recover soon marta your dosage was not so high

March 2010/ October 2010:

Sereupin 30mg a day, EN 15 drops a day

October 2010/ 1st November 2014:

Cipralex 50mg a day (tapered to 40mg a day in August 2013), EN 15 drops a day (switched to Lexotan 15 drops a day in September 2014)

Started Risperdal 1mg a day on the 1st November 2014.

Stopped Risperdal on the 23 November 2014 because that day, after a short mental crysis, I suddenly lost all my emotions, desires, motivation and they not come back yet.

Stopped Cipralex C/T in December 2014.

Added, tapered and stopped other drugs during the following months (also a voluntary hospitalization in January 2015 for a suicide attempt)...no changes yet.

Hi Marta, thank you for stopping by my thread. I'm so sorry your going through this, it's absolutely horrible. Welcome to the forum we're all here to support each other. Big hugs!

Spring of 1998 place on birth control pills for irregular bleeding, high testosterone and one ovarian cyst, stayed on until April 2004, told to take hormone holiday, conceived first son 4 months later-VERY BIG SUPRISE, was told wouldn't be able to have childern or would need reproductive doctor to help. Got pregnant again 2006 with second son easily, then was on/off birthcontrol again until October 2011, concieved 3rd son in October 2011(tried many times to get pregant again when 2nd child was close to 2yrs, hormone problems started again after 2nd child, along with thyroid enlargement.

Spring of 2001 celexa 10 mgs-rx'd by pcp for complaints of chronic fatigue, irritability and weight gain, stayed on until June 2005, switched to Lexapro 20mgs for PPD, stayed on Lexapro 6-7 months, couldn't afford to see psyh dr. and Lexapro, saw PCP switched back to 20mgs celexa in 2007, remained on until November 2011, was c/t off due to 3rd pregnancy, baby had umbilical cord defect, seemed ok during pregnancy, except for crying jags here and there. Our miracle baby was born July 20th 2012, healthy except with reflux. One month later the anxiety, restlessness, horrible crying, insomnia and the deepest depression ever. That started the psyh drug nightmare-benzo's,antidepressants, sleeping pills, mood stablizers. Nothing help made me worse, doctors just kept changing the meds frequently. 4 mental health hospitalizations, rapid detox off benzos Jan 2013, horrible withdrawal and still suffering withdrawal symptoms NO ONE BELIEVES ME, I feel like ive been on one consistant drug withdrawal for the past 2 years

January 2014 slow titrate up of lexapro to 20 mgs-horrible side effects!!, was just rapidly taper by current pysh off to pursade me to try an MAOI-no way!!! Was told should consider ECT

Posted

QUESTION: in your experience, if you are free if drugs, then you have a BAD w/d or something else and you decide (the doctor decide) to put you again on meds.....do the symptoms fade immediatly with the meds or it takes time also for this???

Because I'm one week again in 10mg Cipralex but I still feel...rubbish! :(

Thx.

Marta

It takes 4 days  to get to a steady state in your bloodstream  marta ,  and symptoms tend to reside over a few weeks rather

than stopping abruptly.

Have you noticed any improvements since you reinstated?

1987-1997 pertofran , prothiaden , Prozac 1997-2002 Zoloft 2002-2004 effexor 2004-2010 Lexapro 40mg

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

Hello, Marta. Very few doctors recognize withdrawal syndrome. They almost always say it's "relapse."

You may be more comfortable with 5mg.

marta, the fun thing is doc gave me cipralex not for depression but for the chronic fatigue syndrome. Ye, where I live doctors are simply drugs dealers, I suppose they are very close to big pharma. hey, more prescriptions, more money...

That is terrible Luca. But even in this case you will heal, it takes only apparently a lot of time.

I think the same! If only ..... back in that day I had refused to take it and throw it out of thr window...but I was told it was secure and the "best" SSRI, no addtcive! :(  what a lie!!! Yes, I know of you have chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia they give you antidepressant.....so not only your body, also your mind will hurt. In addiction to all my horrible symptoms I also feel different from the old me....but this is quite ok, people change for many reasons not only ssri....I just want a little stability and to stop feel terrible pain and anxiety everyday :( :( :(

Small update, bittersweet: burning skin sensation has reduced a lot, anxierty only in the morning is a littke bit lower, I was able to cry few minutes (this was the most important thing for me because I felt a total zombie) , insomnia not-so-bad except early morning, libido is totally absent.....BUT maybe all the stress for this conditions plus the stress for work and university has triggered again abdominal pain, not so strong but it's there. Periods periods....these weeks and months will be only periods...i try to focus on the fact that it doesn't mean that all my life will be horrible!

Hello Marta,

I feel sorry for your withdrawal and I really hope it gets better.

I feel related to your story because I started fluoxetine also for anxiety triggered by my stressful engineering degree at university, in my case I developed headaches that I believed were from an organic cause, I even believed I had brain cancer (I have always been quite hypochondriac). And when these headaches turned out to be psychosomatic the fluoxetine prescription came within minutes.

This system leads us to believe very quickly that there is something wrong with us that needs to be treated... when the only wrong thing here is the system.

I wish you all the best and a not-so-bad withdrawal.

About me ------------------------ College student with a history of anxiety, excessive worrying and health anxiety.

April 2014 - May 2015----------    Prozac 20mg On and Off.  Second time on it I developed apathy, changes in personality, asexuality.

May 2015  -   July 2015-----------------  Tappering off prozac. Still no feelings, anhedonia, apathy, no libido, asexuality.

Current symptoms--------  pssd (asexuality in my case). Anxiety and depression developed some months afer stopping prozac, could have been caused by obsessing and beating myself up too much when I found myself unable to like girls again. The best thing to do with pssd (which in my case is asexuality) is accept it and move on.

Not so good, to be honest. I had just few "normal days", the rest I have high anxiety, a constant sense of oppression in my chest, agitaion and fear. I try to do my best to go to work, study (which is really very hard because concentrate is a challenge) and try to have a social life.....I feel very tired because trying to ignore the pain requires a lot of energy. And of course I wake up early in the morning with anxiety.

It's about a month that I have reinsert cipralex ....my gp always suggest me to increase the dosage, really I don't know if I have to trust him. In addiction when I have reinserted he said to add 2mg a day, which maybe was too much fast for restart. I know that antidepressants could need a lot of time to work...but how long I have to wait for a stabilization? 1million dollar question!

Sincere thanks for reading my "story".

Hello Marta,

At the begining of this year, when I started my second round of prozac, the first 2/3 months or so were horrible, the anxiety got worse than before reinstating, it was like my organism didn't accept the prozac anymore, at that moment I had no clue why I was worse, my doctor told me that if I didn't stabilized in a bit of time, he would put me on another ad. Eventually I stabilized on April, but then I realized the side effects (zero libido and emotional flatness) and decided to quit, becoming anti-psychiatricmeds and find other ways to fight my anxiety.

I think you may be experiencing something similar, but I think you will stabilize in a bit, as I finally did.

About me ------------------------ College student with a history of anxiety, excessive worrying and health anxiety.

April 2014 - May 2015----------    Prozac 20mg On and Off.  Second time on it I developed apathy, changes in personality, asexuality.

Hi Theon,

thank for your answer, it gives me a little grain of hope. I'm still not sure for the dosage, but at least I hope in a future stabilization. I experience zero libido too, also a repulsion for intimancy, not only an indifference. Emotional flatness is a little bit decreased at least ... I was totally unable to cry but after weeks reading a sad article I was able to shed a small (but significant) tear.

This anxiety is killing me...my chest is like a stone. What's makes me angry is that before ADs, ok I was nervous, hasty and pessimistic BUT I never had this kind of constant, heavy fear...

Maybe, too much serotonine will increase anxiety? ....of course I don't trust the layabout imbalance theory, but this damned serotonin is for sure doing something before (hopefully) stabilization. Thank you for the answer again! <3

Small update 3:

(About one month half after the r/i of cipralex)

GOOD:

I'm better than one month ago ^_^  Pure terror and sadness are less strong and if I try to keep myself busy they're not so intrusive.

I weak up early in the morning but around 6 or 7a.m no more 3 or 4 a.m. And I don't wake up in horror and anguish as before.

BAD:

I still have chest problems, heart pounding and a sense of oppression in it... :( and anxiety is still here.

Concentration and study issues are very challenging.

and...my libido is on Pluto  <_< (no surprise)

So I really hope I'm on the road of stabilization.

How long do you think is better to wait when I'll feel even more stable?

Cheers to you all
