Healing
From Jack Kornfield, Ph.D., ex-Buddhist monk and clinical psychologist -- from workshop on Mindfulness and the Brain, recorded by Sounds True -- "And one of the most important things you can learn, and offer yourself and another, is the trust that everything turns. That if we make the space, there is renewal. Pablo Neruda said, "You can pick all the flowers, but you can't stop the Spring." "And there is in us and in this world a kind of eternal renewal that is absolutely trustworthy, and our knowing it from the place, from the space, of the Buddha-mind that we are beginning to explore, and from the experience of being willing to turn to that which is difficult -- with the right circumstances, not re-traumatizing, re-overwhelming ourselves -- but really learning this allows for something else to be born. "That when you go through the difficulties, it's not to avoid them, but to allow them to show you the inviolable spirit, the untouched spirit...." 1996-97 - Paxil x 9 months, tapered, suffered 8 months withdrawal but didn't know it was withdrawal, so... 1998-2001 - Zoloft, tapered, again unwittingly went into withdrawal, so... 2002-03 - Paxil x 20 months, developed severe headaches, so... Light
"And one of the most important things you can learn, and offer yourself and another, is the trust that everything turns. That if we make the space, there is renewal. Pablo Neruda said, "You can pick all the flowers, but you can't stop the Spring." This is uplifting and it does ring true even in my current circumstances. We don't always get the form of renewal that we want but maybe we need to be open to different colored flowers... Healing
Healing, what does "making space" mean for you? Ah, nice question! For me, making space means -- either when you're "officially" meditating (eyes closed, body still) or when you're doing your chores -- letting thoughts go, aiming for a spacious mind. Gazing soft-eyed around you (into the black if your eyes are closed) and gently looking for what the Tao is sending to you next. By "the Tao" I mean the Universe, nature, and a cosmic intelligence that is out there all around us. I try to surrender and be open. Try to let go of any agenda, pre-conceived ideas, obsessions. And relaxing muscles and breathing into the belly help with this. How about you? Anybody else? 1996-97 - Paxil x 9 months, tapered, suffered 8 months withdrawal but didn't know it was withdrawal, so... 1998-2001 - Zoloft, tapered, again unwittingly went into withdrawal, so... 2002-03 - Paxil x 20 months, developed severe headaches, so... Neuroplastic
Thinking for some time now of taking up meditation, but despite repeated attempts, the still present "fight or flight" thing not allowing for it. Healing
Try starting small -- three minutes, no fanfare, sit or lie down, breathe deeply. That's it. You're done.
