I have a question, can celexa cause my hand to swell, it's only one hand?

10 years citalopram 30mg- tapered down in December 15/2015- Jan 15/2016 to 20mg for two weeks, ten for one week and five for another week, then stopped, less then two weeks later, sheer hell broke lose with debilitating withdrawal symptoms.

Update-- reinstated 5mg of celexa on feb 5-- within hours noticed immediate difference in WD symptoms-- Holding holding and more holding.

Updose- March 23/16 too 10mg- relieved the harsher head symptoms- current symptoms headaches, dizzy, numbness and tingling in my head.

Benzos- 2015-Ativan on and off for 6 months 2mg- switched to clonazepam nov 2015- 2mg till Jan 2016 Zopiclone 7.5mg nov-dec 2015- was tapered off over 4weeks- Currently in protracted withdrawal. ????????????????????????????????

Update- ended up in the hospital April 18/16 major suicidal ( never had that before) was admitted/ been there ever since, put me back to full dose celexa 30mg no drugs added, IAM FINALLY STABLE AFTER 3 months of tortuous hell. Got a great physiatrist that new all about WD, he will help me taper properly in a couple of months at 5% deductions holding 8 weeks. I never want to relive that hell again.

Udate- stable and holding, doing things slowly is key.

Yes, I have swollen left side from head to toe almost every day for a quite while from lexapro. Lexapro and Celexa are very similar.

I now know it's more like allergy reaction to the drug, as when dropped a tiny dose, swelling got lots better.

Are you still on Celexa?

Ali.  How are you doing now ?  You reinstated a little ?  How much ?  Could you update your drug history signature, as it's a little unclear . It helps you to get concise advice .

I hope you're doing better.

Not a good day today???? my head symptoms still continue, headache, numbness and tingling on the left side, it's so deflating when you have good days you think it's over, then it happens again. Feeling overwhelmed.

Are heart palpitations normal? If so, what may help with them?

Yes, they seem to be common with celexa, and its evil twin, lexapro. Might be wise to get it checked out just in case. Your tests will probably come back normal, as mine did, and that was enough to stop me from worrying about it.

Yes, I had it too along with very irregular heart rate readings (upto 240) from the gym trade mill machine. I used other monitors too showing similar irregularity but not that bad (up to 90) but the machine always showed normal rate before my worst hit. I also were the medical device ordered from the doctor for two weeks everything is normal. My understanding is, the electricity in my body is in chaos triggered by the drug and WD which is how the machine picked up wrong signals.

I still have that crazy reading even my pulse is normal felt by my own hand.

I don't know anything can help, just like every other symptoms you basically take care the whole situation of WD by listening to your body.

Like Dan mentioned, it's particular for lexapro and Celexa and there are proof from research publications.

It's very interesting to notice your new symptoms since reinstate, very much like a subset of mine. Somehow I sense I'm in lex tolerance suddenly causing all the different symptoms (swelling head, DR, coma like etc) after a very long hold. so I started dropping dose then the new ones quickly lessened. I'm still testing the water weather my body actually build tolerance suddenly in middle of slow taper.

I wonder if you want to try to decrease a bit of Celexa see how that goes.

Yes the palpitations only begun after the too fast off, after reinstating I notice them here and there, enough to terrify the **** out of me. Dan I like that "Lexapro evil twin" SO TRUE. If they keep up I'll hit the doc and make sure all is good. These AD are SCARY.

Hey Ali,

May be worth double checking with doc to be extra safe but I've also experienced heart palpitations with Celexa WD and even when I have updosed after dropping too quickly in the past.

Lots of strange unrelated symptoms will probably come and go within the next month or two as a result of the CT and reinstatement, but the fact that you felt such quick relief and your issues haven't been nightmarish is a great sign.

What usually gets me the most is a feeling of panic/unease, digestive issues, detachment, and heart palps. Nothing more strange than sitting alone in a quiet room and yet your gut telling you that you are in grave danger and need to run.

Hi Phenom,

So glad to here from another celexa taker, thank you for sharing your symptoms, is it weird that it makes me feel better! The heart palps are only once in a while, but enough to get my attention, I will make a doc appointment just to be sure, but since it started after coming off and during WD, tells me that is what it has to do with, haven't had heart palps before this **** show. I know the grave danger and needing to run feeling, that is some scary stuff too, it's all pretty messed up really. How are you getting on with your taper? Ali.

It's going on alright, it was much better in the past months but I made a big mistake. I had successfully worked my way down to 2.5mg from 30mg over the course of a bit over a year with a few hiccups (see my sig).

Well I felt so good at 2.5mg that I decided it was a small enough dose to jump off of (after all my doc that put me on it said 20mg was starting dose)... Big mistake.

I felt great for two weeks and then a slight decline of mood happened for week 3 and during week 4 anxiety/depressive feelings began rearing their head and they were nasty.

I expected to take a hit week 1 or 2 if CT was an issue, little did I know I actually felt great those weeks and thought I was in the clear only to get my taste later. Depersonalization, heart palps, feelings of panic, tinnitus, and then when I started seeing what looked like electric sparks in my vision I knew it was the meds.

Anyway, I've learned my lesson... and yesterday when I realized the issue I immediately updosed back to 1.67mg. Like you I got immediate relief from the more severe symptoms I was feeling, but I know from past experience that things will be a bit more shaky for a couple weeks.

Slow and steady beats the hell out of anything else with this, every time I forget that a little punishment drills the idea farther into my head for me.

Well I'm glad your feeling a bit better, that's good news and you are correct slow and steady, congrats on getting That far down in your dose, that is awesome! Right now my biggest symptom is the " brain zaps" those are fun NOT, some days I wanna rip my head off, other days it's ok. Just when I think I'm stabilizing I get kicked back a couple more notches with some more pretty awesome symptoms, I just want to feel normal again, hopefully soon.

Today is NOT A GOOD DAY, woke with a headache, has got progressively worse as the day goes by, comes with a very odd burning sensation in the head, accompanied by massive panic and anxiety, very restless and kinda just want to crawl in a hole and disappear.

Loosing hope fast, the past few days I don't know if I'm coming or going. My symptoms are all over the map, I'll get ones I'm used too, then ones that scare me, I can honestly say iam officially frightened.

Hang in there Ali, it can be a rough ride getting a reinstatement to settle down.  It's only been a few weeks so it will need a little longer, but it will happen.  Try not to be frightened because the fear only serves to feed the symptoms.  Relax as best as you can and roll with it.

(((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Sorry you're having a rough day Ali! Hang in there. We're going to get through this together.

Lexapro 10mg 2014, tapered,January 2015 started Brintollex, very quickly went into panic attacks and horrible side effects. After 2 weeks on and continuing to get much much worse, stopped taking the brintollex. 2015 was filled with trial and error-xanax switched to ativancelexa started; ativan switched back to xanax; neurontin started; xanax switched to Klonopin; celexa increased several times to 60 mg over only a few months; neurontin increased several times then quickly stopped; latuda started and stopped; celexa tapering began 8/15 60mg-40 mg; celexa 9/15 40mg-30mg ; celexa 10/15 30-20mg, increased back to 30mg; celexa 11/15 30-20mg; mid november 20-15mg; 12/15 15-10; mid dec 10-5; 12/31/15 stopped taking.<p>Reinstated accidentally at 5mg on 2/8; dropped to 1mg on 2/11, stopped 3/2016.

Klonopin 4.5mg taper started 7/13/16. Currently at .875 mg (1/2017).

Hi Ali4, a fellow Celexa victim here, hoping you start to feel better soon!

I'm still trying to pick up the pieces after tapering too fast from Celexa. Hope we all get some relief soon ☺

A convenient link to my introduction post

2003 Paroxetine (20mg I think) daily for 5 months due to extreme anxiety before final exams and stopped cold turkey. From 2003 onwards I have suffered with extreme anxiety, akathisia, severe muscle tension & digestive problems whenever off I'm off anti-depressants.

2007 Clonazepam (unsure of dose) - took approximately 100 tablets to try and self medicate for anxiety.

2007-09 Amitryptyline 10mg - was advised to take this "as and when needed" for anxiety.

April/May 2011 Diazepam 2mg - 2 week course followed by complete inability to sleep upon finishing so started Citalopram 40mg and I was able to sleep again.

Mid 2012 Diazepam 10mg - took approximately 100 tablets.

Mid 2012 Started Citalopram taper - 5mg reductions every month or two, severe withdrawal symptoms throughout taper.

Apr 2013 Completely off Citalopram and continued to have severe withdrawal.

Oct 2013 Completely fell to pieces mentally and alongside had a whole host of debilitating physical symptoms too. I went to the doctors who performed whole batteries of tests but had no idea what was wrong with me. They tried me on Sertraline and Amitryptyline to which I had terrible reactions which made symptoms worse. Eventually got put on Nortryptyline 25mg, which I tolerated and over 3 months withdrawal symptoms started to abate.

Mid 2014 discovered survivingantidepressants.org and hallelujah! I knew what was wrong with me - slow taper FTW!

Late 2014 & 2015 Reduced Nortryptyline 22.5mg & 20mg respectively in November & December of 2014. In 2015 Tapered Nortryptyline from 20mg to 10 mg in 2mg increments. Withdrawal symptoms with each dose reduction are debilitating but in a much different way to Citalopram.

I wish!! I can't believe what a mess I have been, symptoms I can honestly say are terrifying at times. One day at a time I guess. The WORST FEELING EVER IS ALL THE HEAD SENSATIONS, zaps, numbness, tingling, headaches, convinced myself on several occasions that I have something SERIOUS wrong, it is a very dreadful feeling. If you don't mind me asking, what do your symptoms look like?? Nice to have a celexa buddy, hoping we are well soon. Ali.

Ali.   We have all gone through this, at times. It can seem overwhelming , but I think the fact that most of us have experienced similar symptoms , makes it easier to accept that this is withdrawal !

Glad you're feeling better today :)

My current symptoms are low mood, bad anxiety, sleep problems, body temperature problems and frequent episodes of raynauds in a single finger.

Like you, some days are much better than others and I am thankful for the good days but I find myself losing sight of that when I'm having a bad patch and often need reminding by family & friends.

A couple years back when I first came off Citalopram, things got very crazy. Have a read of my introductory post if you want to know more about that - linked in my signature below.

Hope this window is a nice long one for you!
