Terrific update. Thanks for taking a few minutes to post it, wareagle.  You're absolutely correct about the importance of having some members who are tapering slowly and having few if any symptoms.  I'm glad that you are in that group!

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Thanks for the post WarEagle. I haven't been on either mostly to stay away from the negativity because it makes my waves worse. I'm in a wave now and ended up on the forum today. Thank you for a positive post. Remembering that God has this has been the only way I'm making it through. Thank you for being encouragement to me today!

DAY 161

It has been a month or so since the last update, so here goes!  I am on 25mg sertraline tablets currently.  Mood continues to get better and better.  I feel more like myself than I have in so many years!  I have down periods, as you would expect, but nothing out of the ordinary.  No panic attacks either!!  My gastric problems have improved, and the brain zaps are still there but they are mild--only early in the morning for me.  Tinnitus is still a bother, but I am praying for it to go away.

I have done about a month of daily meditation.  I think it has helped keep me focused and more present.  It believe it has helped my blood pressure as well.  I haven't checked it lately but I will soon.  I don't feel the pounding heartbeat in my chest as I was a month ago.

I am continuing the Floradix as well, and I have acupuncture sessions about every six weeks.

My plan is to go back to the liquid next week, at about 20mg per day.  I will stay there for several weeks and then titrate down again.

Next year I will be free from this beast once and for all!!

I am remembering those who are suffering here in my prayers!  You definitely will succeed with prayer and perseverance!

Nice to hear from you!  It's good to read that your taper has continued smoothly and that you're feeling better as the dose lowers.

Steve,

So impressed (and somewhat jealous) of the incredible progress you have made in your taper.

It is great to see how well it is going.  Slow and steady, my friend. Discretion is the better part of valor.

Best,

Andy

Sertraline 50mg and Clonazapam .375mg from 2000 -- symptoms of dizziness Spring 2012

increased to .5 Clonazapam and 100mg Sertraline -- no improvement

Benzo microtaper from November 2012 to November 2014 (followed benzo sites "taper benzo first")

Started Sertraline taper in December 2014 cut by 25mg to 75mg; 62.5mg 1/1/15 and 50mg on 2/1/15

Held at 50mg through April 5 to use liquid
Reduced dosage in 10% or less drops from 50mg to 25mg -- at single tablet of 25mg on 10/5/15

Transitioned to all liquid for accuracy while tapering -- Horrible insomnia -- back to 25mg liquid and held until October 1, 2016

10/16 -- 11/18 tapered very slowly to 10.6mg.  No real improvement and never really stable so updosed to 12.5mg (1/2 a pill) for convenience and long hold.

After 8+ months of holding with no noticeable improvement decided to add .4ml of liquid Prozac (about 1.5mg) to see if that improves the situation

Supplements, Magnesium, D3, Omega 3, curcumin, Valerian, 81mg Aspirin, L-Theanine, Vit. C,

Thanks for the advice Andy!  I will heed it.

I am a little surprised myself that it has worked out so well, but very grateful.  I think that proper planning and having a team of people on my side for support has really helped--including the folks on here.  I cannot stress my acupuncturist enough.  She has been a God send for sure.

You will do great also...everyone is so different in this journey.  It is unfair to compare ourselves.  But I do continue to post because of the great suffering on here.  I would like to give out some positive vibes to everyone else, and maybe ease their burdens for a moment or two.  Also, I post to give people hope that there is an end to the suffering if they will persevere.

Best to you on your journey!!  God bless you!

DAY 188

The finish line is getting closer!!  I had to go back to breaking the 25mg tabs in half as the syrup Sertraline is very viscous and I had a difficult time drawing it up into a syringe with no air bubbles once I got below 1 ml.  So I have violated the slow taper rule just due to the convenience factor and accuracy was being compromised with the liquid.

I am happy to report no noticeable symptoms of the 20mg to 12.5 mg drop.  I still have the early morning brain zaps but none during the awake hours.  No panic attacks, no gastric distress, mood is fine--just like a regular person!!

My acupuncturist says the anxiety "crack" in my tongue is healed!  So she can see the proof of my progress in my tongue.

I am properly emotional at the right times, and better focused at work.  Getting a lot more done.  Not as foggy or slow of thought.  Words come easier, as does empathy, love, hope, positivism, and just an overall sense of well being.

My primary care doc is pleased, and the spike in blood pressure seems to have been a withdrawal symptom.  He checked it yesterday and got 117/78.

Pressing on to the goal!  It is going to be a great 2017!  A sertraline free one as well!!!  Best wishes and prayers for all as we enter 2017.

DAY 213

Well it is time to move me to the success story page!!!  Took my last 12.5mg on January 15th!!  So excited and proud to be off of the sertraline.  I am continuing to take my Fish oil and my other supplements.  Also, I have continued with the acupuncture, and my acupuncturist was also so proud of my accomplishment.  As I posted earlier, she could already see a lot of healing in my anxiety as well.

The first two days were not too good--even a small 12.5mg dose is occupying some receptors-- and I was noticeably down for those two days.  I also had gastric distress and headaches--you all know the stuff.  I fully expected it--and I wasn't disappointed.

It passed quickly and I am doing well now.  Still got the tinnitus darn it!  It is quieter but still present.

Stay with your plan and I will continue to update this as my drug free days roll on.

Best wishes and God Bless to all!

Steve,

Awesome news!  You may become the "poster child" for smooth tapers.

My thoughts are with you as you continue forward and I hope it remains as smooth as it has been for you along the road.  I know there were a few bumps in the road but your taper has been remarkably straightforward.  I, and many others, would love to be standing in your shoes.

Enjoy this!

Best,

Andy

POST MED UPDATE --DAY 25

Not too much to add--things have settled down well.  I had a few nights of very vivid nightmares right after discontinuance.  That seems to have passed now.  Stomach issues are improving too.  My mental focus and clarity are continuing to improve daily.  I am so happy about that!

The tinnitus is somewhat better--not as noticeable but still there in the background.

It is also nice to have a little tear come up when the situation calls for it.  I felt so numb to feelings of happiness OR sadness on sertraline.  I really do relish a moment of emotion now and then.

No panic attacks--so happy about that too!!

IT HAS BEEN SO WORTH IT to leave this medication.  Continue to fight to have your health restored!!  It will be well worth it in the end.

Blessings and prayers to all!

POST MED UPDATE -  DAY 35

I just felt so good today that I wanted to drop back by and encourage any and all who are struggling.  I found that on my time tapering here, there weren't too many positives about the process.  So it is my wish and prayer that more positive messages would be posted.

A quick summary-- the early morning brain zaps as I awaken have ended--or else I just don't remember them by the time I am fully awake!  My GI issues are just the norm for an old guy--I am taking digestive enzymes at the suggestion of my acupuncturist.  She thinks my blood deficiency is due to poor food absorption.  After a few weeks of the enzymes I feel improved in my gut.

My mood is good-I do feel more emotions returning as I mentioned before.  I find that a sign of healing from the SSRI.  I have occasional weird thoughts about things going terribly wrong--but I brush them aside.  I am doing a daily 10 minute meditation time and I really look forward to getting some clear thinking back in the ol noggin.  The meditation has been really really helpful.  It is an app on my phone and it reminds me to do it each and every day.

If you are having a bad day, please know that it does get better--and that you WILL beat this medication.  The blue sky that is just above the clouds is waiting for you to find it.  You will.  The cloudiness of the medication and all of its harsh withdrawal are just temporary.  You can get your peace and happiness back just fine without taking medications.

Stay the course and don't be afraid to listen to your own body for the signs and signals that you need to speed up or slow down the process.  I went much faster than recommended by many; there is no right or wrong schedule to be off these meds.  Invoke the help of trusted advisors but in the end it is your journey.

Blessings and hope to all....it is SO SO SO worth it to be off of it.  Keep pedaling!!

Began Paxil for situational panic attacks in 2000. Then psych put me on Prozac to transition me to Lexapro in 2008. I forget the dosage of Paxil and Lexapro. Switched to100mg Sertraline since 2011.
