Hi @gardenladyJust read your post just by chance since the tagging was not in blue like you mentioned somewhere.I agree with everything you wrote .I also suffered from this being awakened  by terror ( even like vertigo when first opening my eyes) As I said I dont even want to recall that since I can hardly believe I survived. As to the effect of these drugs in the brain it's not even known today because there are no proven trials regarding long term use.I follow Joanna Moncrieff, the psychiatrist and researcher both on Twitter and also her blog.I have mentioned her many times in this forum so I do not want to be repetitive but I truly believe what she says and trust her work and research .Also agree with her views regarding psychiatry paradigm and why a change is needed.Again, hold on and give your body some more time to heal.In any case, what else can we do?

Hi.sorry but my computer is too old.not working properly.I can only write from my phone.nevertheless i do not have drugs to list.only paroxetine.20 mg from 2009 to 2019.10 mg during 2019.sleeping pills for over 20 years.stopped everything december 2019.no drugs since then.forced cold turkey from december 2019.

I just figured out how to tag....I was doing it wrong!  I really like Dr. Moncrieff, too, and have always admired her.  She and Drs. Breggin and Shipko say that no one knows what these drugs do to the brain which is why some people heal eventually while others don't.  It's a mystery.

The other scary thing is how the drugs have changed my ability to care about and love others...I'm always on the verge of mental and verbal (not physical) rage.  I feel as if I've lost my humanity because of the effect on my psyche and am frightened that I'm stuck in this angry, hardened state.

Have you found that these things improved in the time you've been off?

Hi @gardenlady Irritability and rage were present during the first months of withdrawal.I didn't even know what was happening to me since there were just too many weird symptoms both physical and emotional. At the moment ,and since I am in a very vulnerable situation it's mainly overwhelming stress, anxiety, sadness .No irritability or rage.I have two dogs and I care about them and love them. Also I feel empathy towards those who suffer for whatever reason.I don't know if that answers your question but ,to add something else it's hard for me to find joy but then again, since I am living on the edge and permanently hit by external stressors ,I suppose that's pretty normal.

@OverwhelmedladyThanks for your thoughtfulness in asking about me.  My state of being doesn't change much since I don't experience windows, unfortunately.  I hope you are more fortunate than me in that way and are able to have some lessening of the emotional agony every now and then.  I'm glad you have your dogs to keep you company and to offer at least some degree of comfort.

Hi @gardenladyMy Windows are quite short in duration ,they last a few hours ,sometimes during the weekend. I have read that it's quite common to feel better at night. In my case symptoms are much worse during the day and as the sun goes down, I generally feel better. Anyway,in my case chronic stress is not helping in my healing process...unfortunately.On the bright side Amber and Gaia are always close. Two sweeties. 🌹🌹

Hi GL, I also experience apathy/anhedonia. It's not great. I know logically I care about these people, but it's so hard to attach feeling to. I also find myself get easily irritated and get the urge to snap at people. Im not sure if what you are feeling is nero-anger, but I experienced that too. Crazy off the wall anger, I'll admit I've lashed out in those states. (verbally) The nero-emotions faded for me. I still get them now to a lesser degree, though they may reappear with waves. As for the apathy, it takes a long while but it fades.

@ThatOneGirlStitchI'm glad that some of your problems are lessening and fading, especially since it appears you're still tapering.  You are very, very fortunate.   I'm frightened as I continue to deteriorate since completing my 4.5 year-long Cymbalta taper on September 5, 2021.  I hope I will be one of the fortunate ones to heal, eventually.

‘I hope I will be one of the fortunate ones to heal, eventually’

I understand why you say this but there’s really no reason why you shouldn’t heal if you’re  off all meds completely, have a good diet no caffeine no alcohol, rest and little to no stress. Why wouldn’t you heal?
What evidence is there that supports the theory that some don’t heal?

As far as I’m aware no long term studies exist. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Yes there are some people that are severely protracted but we don’t know their background to make an accurate judgement. And even the severely protracted heal eventually.

I really do get your concern, but you will heal when the time is right for you.

Following is a link to a Medicating Normal video of an October 2021 interview conducted by Nicole Lamberson, Physicians Assistant, with Dr. Stuart Shipko, a psychiatrist well-versed in psych drug injury.  Nicole was polydrugged and has been off of all drugs since 2012 but remains too disabled to work.  She volunteers for various organizations committed to helping people injured by psych drugs.  At the 31:30 mark, the conversation about drug injury vocabulary comes up.  Dr. Shipko's opinion is that the term "protracted withdrawal" is an oxymoron and causes cognitive dissonance with most physicians for reasons he describes.  He proposes that the constellation of symptoms are better described as neurotoxic injury.  The 56 minute interview is well worth watching in entirety.

I have watched it before and have also spoken to Dr Shipko. The video is indeed scary because he talks about neurotoxicity and neuronal damage but he doesn’t say that the damage is irreversible. I think he is trying to explain why in many cases reinstating the drug doesn’t work and that’s cause it’s not a matter of receptors anymore (where the drug binds to promote its action) but a neuronal damage that will not be rescued by the drug binding on this receptors.

Currently tapering Mirtazapine; previously tapered Cymbalta 30mg from June 2018-Feb 2019 and Seroquel 150mg to zero from Oct-December 2020.

Supplements for Hashimoto's disease and histamine issues relating to Mirtazapine:   Vitamin D3 1,000mcg, bio-identical HRT, Selenium, Quercetin, Lutein, Zinc, Vitamin C, Omega 3.

Mirtazapine Taper: 2021 16th Aug -  transitioned to liquid from tablet by dissolving two 15mg tablets into a solution of 15 ml water and 15 ml maple syrup on a starting dose of what I thought was 7.5ml; 17 Sept  - 7.31; 24 Sept  - 7.13; 15 Oct  - 6.95; 6 Nov  - 6.78; 21 Nov  - 6.61; 5 Dec  - 6.51;

Following helpful advice from moderator OnMyWay (see her  reply of the 5th March) discovered taper with the dilution was 3.8mg (calculated by dividing 30/33 so that every 1ml of solution has  0.90ml of Mirtazapine.  7.50 - 0.90= 6.6ml which was the starting dose on 16th Aug 2021 not 7.5ml).  I decided to keep using the solution as I didn't want more change to deal with than I had to.

I'd like to thank all of you for your kindness in asking after me and to apologize for not responding sooner.  I've found it very difficult to know what to write as I have no good news, so I've just keep quiet.  But I do not want to appear ungrateful or rude so I thought I'd do my best to give an update.

I'm coming up on being 9 months off of a 4.5 year Cymbalta taper.  I had been moving along without much change in symptoms until about three weeks ago when I went into a nosedive.  Now, I'm sorry to report that I'm worse now than I can remember and certainly more so than at anytime since completing the taper.   The akathisia is intense and unrelenting and gets worse each day.  In the past, hydroxyzine afforded me a bit of relief, but it's not working now and of no help at all.  I took 20 mg of propanolol a couple of days ago that seemed to take a bit of the edge off, but it hasn't helped since then.  Supplements are of no benefit at all and nothing that I do or don't eat or drink has any effect.

My symptoms are the same as before:  insomnia with sleep inversion (inability to sleep at night), akathisia, fear, terror, doom, dread, anhedonia, depersonalization and personality disintegration.   I am unable to experience any positive feeling or emotion about anything....only negative.   I am thankful that I don't have physical symptoms such as pain.

I've read of others who slow-tapered and reported getting worse at the 8-9 month mark, so I sort of expected it.  I just didn't realize it would be so severe.  I've lost all relationships and am completely alone so have no one to talk to or to call for encouragement.   I'm in total isolation and have been for about four years since I can't relate normally or pleasantly to former friends.

I've also gained 25 pounds which adds to my dismay.  I do walk most days for 40 min or so, but it doesn't help my mental state.

I really wish I had better news to report and hope that I will at some point.  Thanks so much to all of you who have been so kind to inquire about me.  I realize how much you're suffering, too, and am so very sorry for what we are all experiencing.

Dear @gardenlady

I am very sorry to hear that things are so bad at present.  Could I add a note of hope?  The fact that you report yourself that other people who have withdrawn also go through this state at the 8-9 month mark.   Also you have no physical pain - the lack of physical pain is a huge plus.  It means you can do more physical things that will distract your mind.  The problem with walking is that it allows for rumination but you could take an exercise class or do something physical as you don't have physical pain.  I envy you there big time there.

When I had tapered off Cymbalta I also entered the state that you are describing at approximately this time.  My taper was finished in February 2019; then I got a huge rush of energy which resulting my doing multiple things every day; this lasted until August 2020 when the symptoms got worse.  The intense symptoms of akathisia and severe insomnia began to dissipate in April 2020 so roughly 12 months after the taper was finished.

So if you could try and hang in there for the next three months and I think the worst of them might dissipate for you too.  I do find that eating animal protein helps also - butter, fish, red meat.  I know you say that nothing you eat makes much difference but just putting that out there.  I am lucky where I live that livestock is mostly grass fed.

I do have suicidal ideation nearly every day but that is a constant and is related to life circumstances as much as withdrawal.  I saw a podcast that Will Hall did and even to this day he said he lives with suicidal ideation.

Your life circumstances sound very difficult.  I think that to try and make it better one has to despite how one is feeling and I can completely relate to your feeling that you are not able to relate 'normally' to old friends... but I think in order to move forward one has to either make some accommodation or engagement with the outside world.  I suppose in our case we have the choice of a peer support group or voluntary work.  That is something that I am going to have to get back on the horse of too although my housing situation is up in the air at the moment so permanent decisions are difficult.

I hope that this post might help you a little as it's from someone else who has gone through Cymbalta - I was on it around 5 years including the taper period, similar enough to your own time period.  Also like yourself I am pretty socially isolated.

I hope that you can take some heart from this post and hope that in the next few months things will improve for you.

Thank you for your reply and letting us know you’re safe.
I do understand what you are going through. We may not have the same WD symptoms but the torment of getting through each day and the upset of what tomorrow will bring is the same.
One day you will feel proud of achieving what some unfortunately find impossible to do, being drug free.
I’ve no doubt you will recover in time.
Keep going and update when you can.

@gardenlady,

Thanks very much for your reply and for your kind wishes.  I don't know if the mental health professionals that I've attended over the course of my life who agree with you on the stability ha ha.

I still feel pretty scared due to life circumstances.   However for now I am using this as an opportunity to practice calming my amygdala to keep myself 'stable' by any means available - currently Tai Chi.  I am trying to introduce hedonic rehabiltation (the mod JanCarol) has some great pointers on this.  Doesn't have to be a big thing.

Today I went to a quiet safe place I like with a nice view and just sat on a bench for an hour.  You will know if you do anything that gives you a bit of peace.  You just have to keep trying things and listening for it in your body and mind.  But you're still at a relatively early stage of coming off so it might take a little while.

Due to another sudden intolerance had to fast taper venlafaxine to 1,14mg

Seems like all of this time I was in benzo withdrawal, because when I took it now in desperation to help it made me feel worse, tried reinstatement first 1mg, then 0,05mg both made me feel worse.
