JD32: Prozac

Recommended Posts

I’m trying to wean off Prozac and have gotten down to 2.5 milg . I would love to be off my May 15 completely. Is this doable? I have tablets but it’s difficult to break it up after cutting the 1.25 in half.

Welcome to SA, JD32.

To give members the best information, we ask them to summarize their medication history in a signature -- drugs, doses, dates, and discontinuations & reinstatements, in the last 12-24 months particularly.  Please include:

-original dose of Prozac and when you started

-rate at which you tapered to your present dose and date you started the taper

-any other psychiatric/psychotropic drugs you have taken or are taking

A list format, rather than a paragraph format, is best.  Please use this link:

How are you feeling since you began your taper?  Are you having withdrawal symptoms?

We recommend tapering by no more than 10% of your current dose every four weeks.  The reasons for this are in the following link.  Using our recommended tapering schedule, you would not be able to be off 2.5mg Prozac by May 15.

Why taper by 10% of my dosage?

The following link is specifically about tapering Prozac and includes methods to get small nonstandard doses of Prozac.  The easiest way to do this is with a prescription liquid or using a compounding pharmacy.  Other methods, including making your own liquid, are also described.

Tips for tapering off fluoxetine (Prozac)

We don't recommend a lot of supplements on SA, as many members report being sensitive to them due to our over-reactive nervous systems, but two supplements that we do recommend are magnesium (glycinate is a good form) and omega 3 (fish oil). Many people find these to be calming to the nervous system.

Add in one at a time and at a low dose in case you do experience problems.
This is your introduction topic -- the place for you to ask questions, record symptoms, share your progress, and connect with other members of the SA community.  I hope you’ll find the information in the SA forums helpful for your situation.  I'm sorry that you are in the position that you need the information, but I am glad that you found us.
