Hello,

I have been using Ativan for over two years to help with pudendal neuralgia. I am 72, in chronic pain and using two new supplements to help with withdrawal symptoms. Nerve Fix and Niacel by Thorne

which is nicotinamide riboside.

Hi Dexie , welcome to the site.

Pudendal neuralgia is a dreadful condition to have . . . does the ativan help?

Could you give us a little more information please about your situation , and how we can help?

I'm wondering if the chronic pain is from PN or something else.

Welcome Dexi,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation and pain.

How are you tapering the Ativan? Are you taking any other medications at the moment? What withdrawal symptoms are you having?

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

Hello and thanks for responding. I am not taking ativan during the day now. I take 2mg of Ativan with 50 mg of Dilantin to sleep at night. I have not been able to eat because of severe abdominal discomfort, just fells cramped and bloated. I tried to rub on some Basil and then some Rosemary Oil after the peppemint oil failed me. It seem to allow me to relieve the bloating so I finally was able to eat some sauerkraut and yogurt and eggs.

Any other suggestions from people going off benzos. I refuse to take opiates cuz it almost killed me three differnt times. NO opiates since 2011. Some of the Niacel seems to help and found this homepathic called nerve fix. Seems to calm it down a bit. I was misdiagnosed with Intercystial cystitis, but a 4th urologist said it is definitely nerve pain. He put wome lidocaine next to the nerve in my buttocks and the pain went away without any drugs for 48 hours. I do not think that would work for IC

Hey Dexi -

Congratulations on finding something that helps with your pain.  Ortho-molecular doctors have been using niacin for decades, and this looks like a novel (if expensive) approach!

So that we can know your tapering history.  There are many people here who have come off of benzos.  It will help us to know:  when you started the benzos, when you started to taper, by how much you tapered each time, and how much you are currently on.  When we have more information, we can help you decide what is the best way to come off the ativan.

Are you having breakthrough symptoms?  Are there certain times of the day when you struggle more than others?

For the bloating (I have severe IBS), I have been researching making my own suppositories.  The one which shows the most promise - if I want to sleep at night with no gas pains - is activated charcoal in coconut oil suppositories.  It's messy (your bum turns black) but very effective.  I still haven't gotten to the suppository making stage, but sometimes I just coat a tablet in hemorrhoid ointment, and put it up.  It absorbs excess gas quite nicely - but my trouble is more lower bowel.

I recently saw a video about adding essential oils to suppositories (she just used small diameter silicon ice cube trays).  I'm not sure about taking them internally, but if you were, peppermint, rosemary, and fennel would be "helpful experiments" (I do not advocate this, I'm just passing along what I saw yesterday, and they seemed to be happy about adding 5 drops of essential oil to a homemade suppository).  Others here have gotten help with bloating from a fennel tea and cool packs on the tummy.

Others here would suggest dietary changes - many of us cannot handle wheat or dairy or high histamine foods, and the bloating is caused by an intolerance (not an allergy, but a difficulty) to certain foods.  If you look at a FODMAPS chart, cutting out grains and dairy first to see if it helps bloating can be revelatory.  Then, when you feel better, you can add foods back to narrow it down to you precise culprits.

A lifetime of being prescribed antidepressants that caused problems (30 years in total). At age 35 flipped to "bipolar," but was not diagnosed for 5 years. Started my journey in Midwest United States. Crossed the Pacific for love and hope; currently living in Australia.   CT Seroquel 25 mg some time in 2013.   Tapered Reboxetine 4 mg Oct 2013 to Sept 2014 = GONE (3 years on Reboxetine).     Tapered Lithium 900 to 475 MG (alternating with the SNRI) Jan 2014 - Nov 2014, tapered Lithium 475 mg Jan 2015 -  Feb 2016 = GONE (10 years  on Lithium).  Many mistakes in dry cutting dosages were made.

Welcome, Dexi.

I have never heard of nicotinamide helping people go off benzos, do you mean it helps with the abdominal pain?

Coincidentally, I am dealing with gut issues myself (just had a test for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or SIBO) and have found excluding many FODMAP foods (example: https://stanfordhealthcare.org/content/dam/SHC/for-patients-component/programs-services/clinical-nutrition-services/docs/pdf-lowfodmapdiet.pdf )has helped quite a bit. I am also taking enteric coated peppermint oil and drinking at least 1 cup of fresh ginger tea every day. They help digestive motility.
