riverwithdrawal Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 (edited) Wellbutrin – Bupropion Tapering Journey – My Goal and Future Plans A few days ago, I signed up. I want to introduce myself to everyone and say, I'm thankful for the existence of this site, its creators and my fellow subscribers. I want to encourage and help others dealing with antidepressants. Consider me a friend! If there's anything I could do for anyone, please let me know! I want to add the following information to my history but, I’m not familiar with this site and do not know how to change my initial profile history so I thought I would enter my history as a topic. April 1990 Started Xanax after complaining to the doctor about insomnia. Dr., at the time, justified his treatment plan by stating that transient situational stress caused my anxiety. The initial dose was 3 mg/day given two times a day. The results were, it took the edge off my anxiety, my feelings numbed, it suppressed my appetite and desire for water, the sleep I got was not restful and, I lost my libido. I developed GERD and constipation so severe I became impacted, Prevacid and mineral oil were prescribed to alleviate these ailments. 1995 Started noticing that I could not remember or recall music in my head. Dr. said the symptom was psychosomatic and advised me to continue taking my meds. Did research on benzodiazepines and discovered they were for short term use only and very, very dangerous. I started tapering off Xanax secretly because I did not trust Dr.’s judgment. 1998 Notified my Dr that I was entirely off of Xanax and wanted to stay off it or any other benzodiazepine. I showed him my research which he dismissed. At no time, did said Dr. attempt to educate me or at the least suggest a treatment plan nor did he urge me to go into therapy for the prolonged withdrawal symptoms I was suffering: I could not focus and had to work extremely hard to concentrate. My emotions were mostly flat except for the underlining anger always smoldering under the surface, I couldn’t find pleasure in anything, and I felt unmotivated most, if not all the time. Out of my ignorance, confusion, and frustration, the only thing fueling my drive to continue was the self-loathing I felt because I thought I was just ‘lazy.’ 1999 Finally stopped completely taking the Xanax. My insomnia came back, I could not focus or concentrate, and debilitating fatigue that would not go away plagued me almost all the time. I felt I had no choice but to go back to the same Doctor and he prescribed Wellbutrin 75 mg IR (immediate release) mg/day given two times a day and justified himself by saying, ‘the drug acts like Speed, it will make your tiredness go away.’ The drug did INDEED stop my fatigue, and it felt like Wellbutrin “placed glasses on my myopic brain because I could once again focus’. As a result, I had more energy to function and get on with my life, but I always had that underlining anger, along with now craving sweets. I stopped taking any stool softeners or laxatives because I felt I didn’t need them anymore. 2002 Dr. increased the drug from 75 mg to 100 mg (sustained release) SR because most of my old symptoms were back including the fatigue. 2005 Dr. increased Wellbutrin from 100 mg to 150 mg SR mg/day given two times a day because most of my old symptoms were back again including the fatigue. Because my thyroid function was borderline low, I showed signs of hypothyroidism, and I was placed on 12 mcg Levothyroxine once a day for good measures. My fatigue finally went away for good. 2012 Severe diverticulitis attack and put on potent antibiotics. 2013 Another severe diverticulitis attack and again placed on potent antibiotics. Now diagnosed with IBS in addition to diverticulosis. 2013 to 2017 Took a course of high-powered antibiotics every three months for diverticulitis and IBS attacks. Started to experience unexplained hand tremors. I could no longer handle any form of stress. Started researching holistic approaches to treating my health issues. Discovered the existence of the (brain-to-gut axis) and I began to believe the medications were causing my digestive problems. Did research and used the Parkinson Disease model to explain my tremors and other symptoms I was experiencing caused by the Wellbutrin altering my dopamine levels and function. Dec 2018 My goal was to taper entirely off of the Wellbutrin and Levothyroxine, starting first with the Wellbutrin. I was on 300 mg SR Wellbutrin once per day. Started tapering process by replacing the 300 mg SR dosage with 150 mg SR, taken twice a day, having a 12-hour window between dosages. Initial holding period was 30 days. Initially, I had a period of sadness and crying spells which diminished. I started a regiment of supplements to prepare my body for the withdrawal process. Jan 2019 The next step in my tapering process was to replace the sustain release form of Wellbutrin with immediate release. To accomplish this, I took 1 and ½ IR Wellbutrin twice a day with a 12-hour window between dosages. Holding period was ten days. Next, from the evening dose, I started cutting pills, removing 1/8 from a whole 100 mg (IR) tablet which is removing around 13 mg. Initial daily drug intake amount became 150 mg SR in the morning and 138 mg, at night, keeping a 12-hour window between the dosages, as best as I can. Again, the holding window. My next tapering decrease will occur in a few days and will be 138 mg in the morning and 125 mg at night for ten days. Moderator Emeritus ChessieCat Posted January 24, 2019 Moderator Emeritus Posted January 24, 2019 Hi riverwithdrawal and welcome to SA, I'm very pleased to see that you are tapering your drug. It is difficult to work out how quickly your are reducing. SA recommends tapering by no more than 10% of the current dose followed by a hold of about 4 weeks to allow the brain to adapt to not getting as much of the drug. Why taper by 10% of my dosage? If we reduce our drug too quickly we can experience withdrawal symptoms: Dr Joseph Glenmullen's Withdrawal Symptoms This is SA's topic: Tips for tapering off Wellbutrin, SR, XR, XL (buproprion) Q: What supplements are you taking? riverwithdrawal Posted June 5, 2019 Author Posted June 5, 2019 (edited) Bupropion - Slow Taper Attempt - Successful at taper 1/3 medication Hi Everyone. Thanks for the existence of this site. It has given me strength and the determination to start and keep tapering, even though tapering is a very painful process. I haven’t posted in a while. I’m been reading the posts on here. I feel I have friends, very good and wise friends! For me, tapering at 10% is too much for my nervous system to handle. I need to taper slower than 10% and I was wondering if someone could look over my tapering schedule and give me his/her opinion. My question is – should I continue to drop my medication using the below schedule and keep using it until I reach 150 mg (75 twice a day) which according to this schedule will be mid-November of this year? Or should I hold and if I should hold where should I hold at? I have found that the below schedule minimizes my withdrawal symptoms. But I do have withdrawal symptoms. When I was tapering at 10%, the below symptoms were almost unbearable. At my current schedule, they are manageable: Despair - I feel lost – I feel completely alone. Severe headaches No appetite Severe Fatigue Poor concentration Inability to handle any kind of stress Ruination and obsessions Craving sugar and ice cream (severe cravings, like, get sugar or die) No desire or ability to go out and meet people. Hearing loss Blurry vision Difficulty tolerating heat Joint and muscle pain (my bones feel like broken sharp glass) Vivid Dreams (Dream Rebound) - REM Rebound Balance Issues Restless Leg I have been on Bupropion for twenty years. About three years ago I developed side effects which scared me: tremors, digestive disorders, food allergies and the inability to handle stress. Last November, I was taking 150 mg XL Bupropion twice a day which is 300 mg per day. I decided to get off the medication when I read somewhere that diverticulitis might be caused by antidepressant use. Since 2012, I have had several diverticulitis attacks. They are not fun! I’m very proud of myself because as of today, I’m taking 95 mg of Bupropion (3/4 of a 100 mg tablet with a liquid) twice a day which is 190 mg per day. I noticed a change for the better after cutting 1/3 of my medication. So, to continue my tapering, I had Quick Pharmacy whip up a batch of liquid Bupropion for me. The Bupropion is in an oil base suspension and tastes like peppermint. This is my tapering plan for now and going forward: For 14 days I’ll take 95 mg both morning and evening – total daily dosage is 190 mg. In fourteen days, I’ll decrease the evening dose from 95 mg to 90 mg – but keep the morning dose at 95 mg – total daily dosage is 185 mg. After that 14 days, I’ll decrease the morning dose from 95 mg to 90 mg – the evening dose will stay at 90 mg. I will hold for another 14 days at 180 mg per day. Afterward, I will decrease the morning dose from 90 mg to 86 mg – the evening dose will stay at 90 mg. I will hold for another 14 days at 176 mg. riverwithdrawal Posted June 26, 2019 Author Posted June 26, 2019 I hope everyone is well. Thank you for reading this post. I hope something I say here can help someone. I think this website saved my life, at least saved me lots, and lots of suffering. In my ignorance, before I found this website, I had planned to go either cool turkey, skip dosages or do a rapid taper. The website believes that tapering no more that 10% is good. I totally agree with the 10% taper however, for me, I am finding out, I have to taper very, very slowly because my body is so, so sensitive. Update I’m taking 95 mg in the morning and 90 mg in the evening, without all the withdrawal symptoms that I was experiencing at a 10% taper. The below list shows my only symptoms I’m experiencing on this new taper. To refresh your memory, my tapering schedule: I take two dosages of Bupropion – one in the morning and one in the evening- at least 8 hours between the morning and evening dosages. § For 14 days – 95mg (morning) and 90mg (evening) § The next 14 days – 90mg (morning) and 90mg (evening) 95mg = 75mg (solid tablet) + 20mg (oil base liquid) 90mg = 75mg (solid tablet) + 15mg (oil base liquid) On this taper, food sensitivities trigger my withdrawal symptoms: § Brain fog and dizziness. § Nighttime thirst which can be extreme. § MSG (a food additive which stands for Misery Suffering, Grisly pain) gives me a “wish-I-was-dead” migraine. § Unfortunately, chocolate gives me an awfully bad migraine. § Gluten, e.g. chocolate chip cookies gives me all the above in addition to joint pain and an overall malaise and extreme fatigue. Sweets and carbohydrates during withdrawal – My theory For the average person in a resting state, the brain consumes 20% of the body’s energy. Glucose, a form of sugar, is the primary source of energy for every cell in the body. Because the brain is so rich in nerve cells, or neurons, it is the most energy-demanding organ, using one-half of all the sugar energy in the body. Subjected to the toxicity of psychiatric drugs, the brain works extremely hard to detoxify itself and it tries to set up homeostasis. This requires allot of energy. Food cravings, especially for sweets is the body’s way of letting a person know what it brain needs to function. For the same reason, when the brain is healing during tapering, the brain requires more energy so there’s a greater demand for energy. Sometimes my cravings are so strong I must obey and eat sweets. Its like I have no choice, my body overrides my will. Take away: 1. Craving carbohydrates and sweets are the body’s way of motivating us to give it what it needs. 2. Food cravings due to drug consumption and drug withdrawal is natural and nothing to be ashamed of. It’s not a lack of will power. It’s only the body looking out for its best interests, which is to supply the brain with the resources the brain needs to function. When I am craving sweets, I should eat fruit instead because fruit, unlike refined sweets, because it has fiber. Fiber slows the absorption process and is good for colon health. The only problem I can foresee is that any kind of sweet spikes insulin and that's a bad thing. I'll research this and see what I come up with. Moderator Go2zero Posted September 28, 2020 Moderator Posted September 28, 2020 Hi Riverwithdrawal, I am wondering how you are doing with your tapering of Wellbutrin/bupropion. I am trying to get off Wellbutrin also, but I am encountering quite some problems as you can read in my post. I stopped tapering at 33,3 mg Wellbutrin per day. Discontinuation effects have become too extreme and at every little decrease under 37,5 mg it has become more difficult and unbearable. And these effects last 5-8 months after every decrease. An extra problem might be that I am still taking a low dose of Prozac (0,75mg) , which I'm also tapering. There is a big change of interference between both medications, so I stopped tapering Wellbutrin. First have to get off the Prozac. But I am really interested in how you have been doing in the tapering of Wellbutrin since your last post. 1993 Anafranil (Clomipramine) for a few months. Later in 1993 Paxil for a few months 1993- 2006 No medication 2006 Effexor, Cymbalta, some Benzo’s. All for short periods. Later in 2006 Lexapro (escitalopram) 10 mg and shortly after Wellbutrin XR 150mg, against side effects Lexapro Since 2006 until end of 2015: Several times on and off Lexapro and Wellbutrin and several slight dosage changes.
