Avrgejane
Hi everyone, just wondering what your thoughts were on gaba supplements? Some people love them some hate them. Some people say they cause more damage and some say they are neither here nor there because they are ingested and supposedly do not cross the bbb. I have been taking them for 7.5 months now and I’m worried they could be impacting my progress and healing. Just looking for some thoughts and experiences from members. Avrgejane
@Gridley @Shep I’m just finishing up a magnesium taper in the next few weeks then I will taper off the Gaba. Are there any posts or suggestions as to how to correctly and easily taper off the Gaba? I know neither of you can “suggest” a taper but if you could direct me to a viable source I would greatly appreciate that! Moderator Emeritus hayduke Posted June 7, 2020 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted June 7, 2020 I've cut out drinking a few weeks ago and read that L-theanine promotes your body's natural production of GABA. It's certainly made it more comfortable for me CTing from about a six pack a day. Explains why I found myself chugging green tea all day many days in the office, but I find the extracted supplement more helpful probably because it doesn't have the caffeine. neverknew
Has anyone ever heard or read of the theory that taking a supplement (such as GABA or melatonin, something made by the body) regularly will inhibit the body's own production of the substance? I've read this in a couple of places and wonder if it's true. And I wonder how significant it is. Perhaps someone our there has actually had experience with this happening? On Prozac since 2004, 10 mg Began to taper, 2016, first time cold turkey unsuccessful, so soon after tried again kept having to go back on medication due to withdrawals tried to do it myself as couldn't find a dr to help me Currently on taper #4 from 2016, having changed to Lexapro and starting November 2018 from 5 mg As of April 2020 I am at 1/5th of a mg (.2 mg)

Moderator Emeritus hayduke Posted September 6, 2020 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted September 6, 2020 @neverknew I have the impression 5-HTP can cause that with serotonin. There's at least a few supplements that will act on GABA. @DataGuy and I were chatting a while ago about whether L-Theanine could do this with GABA. I think it's possible, even coffee does this with adenosine. Being 6 or 7 weeks out from quitting coffee there is definitely something going on there! Melatonin is a hormone if that makes a difference. I am not a health professional - your actions are your own.
