Hi Lucy. I have itching and know it is from the psych med withdrawal and taper I am doing now. I find that apple cider vinegar (the one with the mother) mixed with water on a washcloth has helped me. It calms down the itchiness and some of the rash from it. I had this with trazodone withdrawal and now mirtazapine. I just used some today and it worked well. Try it. Be well Marie.

I think I get scared thinking it won't go away then I tend to over react.

So do I🙄 I think it is just matter of little bit more time and mastering some coping skills.

Update:

I am 4 months post psych drugs. Currently into day 3 of being completely mentally clear. No agitation or anxiety, no moodiness and no apathy.

Most likely in a window but am hoping it is more than that.

Other than my scalp issue, which seems to be getting milder, I continue to be physically fine.

Welts/hives

I am now 21 weeks off seroquel. Mentally/emotionally I am doing very well. My main issue has been my scalp itch with what I thought were sores from my scratching.  I was taking benadryl 50mg x3 daily. In the past 2 weeks my scalp seemed to be getting better so I reduced to twice daily. Big mistake. I woke yesterday with intense welts on my scalp and on my face. The itching is severe.

I saw a medical doc and was prescribed a steroid pack and was told to up my benadryl dosage.  The itching woke me several times during last night.

Today I started the steroids and plan to take 75mg benadryl 4x daily until the welts go away.

I am thinking of seeing a dermatologist but since I believe my condition is seroquel related I wonder if it will help.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would go back up on the Benadryl to where you were (50mg x3 daily) when you were seeing improvements. Please try that before adding in the steroids. If that solves the problem, you'll save yourself going on another drug that will have to be tapered.

Also, steroids can be difficult for many people to tolerate during withdrawal. They can cause upticks in insomnia, agitation, and anxiety.

Please let us now how you're doing.

Thank you @Shep I started the steroid pack yesterday so I think I am too far in to stop now since they have to be tapered. ??? I was in a whole lot of pain so felt I had no choice:) I am somewhat apprehensive

as to what the results of taking them will be though. I am also taking 50mg benadryl 4x daily hoping the welts will completely subside.

I had my face threaded (face hair removed with a thread) the day prior to the welts. So perhaps that contributed to the breakout. Plus I very recently separated from my husband of 38yrs. so I am stressed which may have also contributed.

The psych drugs, WD and Covid have taken a huge toll on me.  I'm sure it has on everyone:(

After only 1 day you should be able to stop them.  But if you are going to do that, you need to do it straight away.

Hi @Kingfisher86  I am doing well. Still only WD remaining symptom is the scalp issue.  My husband and I are still living apart but spending time together. I believe the issue is just too much time (8 months to date) of Covid togetherness. The little things that irritate became overwhelming. Also could be a lack of patience on my part due to WD. I really don't know.

How are you? I think of you often wondering if you are well.

Thank you for the hug! I needed it:)

I hope you have big Christmas plans and am so hoping this Covid goes away!!!

Hugs back to you!!!🙂

It is so great to know that your recovery remains steady... You have been such an encouragement to me when I was at my lowest😑 I am so grateful that you are my recovery buddy🌻

Yeah, rediscovering ourselves and redefining our relationships after med(s) is challenging. I just want you to be happy and at peace☀️I trust in you.
One of my best friends of 20 yrs had so little understanding for my WD that we simply stop communicating. On the other hand, some other friendships flourished.

I am mostly ok. Anxiety lessened steadily and now I don’t get swept away by many fears.
Working helps a lot. I am driven by purpose, and this job provides me with that. It can be stressful at times but I look at it as a practice run for my brain to use newly found coping skill.

I just feel a bit more present and ok in my skin. This is huge bc since WD begun I was so anxious, living in the past or the future with no real attachment to my body.

I really can’t wait to see what will next couple of months bring for the both of us!❤️

Update: Benadryl stopped giving itch relief 3-4 days ago so I decided to quit taking it. This is day 2 without it and I am hoping the itching stops soon. I will say however the itching doesn't seem as bad as before. Time will tell.

Please note that some people experience withdrawal from Benadryl and since you've been on it consistently for almost 4 months, you may want to consider slowly reducing it instead of a cold turkey.

Scalp/face still tingle and itch along with the bumps (welts?). Started taking hydroxyzine 25mg 1-2 x daily. I am getting some relief. I haven't had any sign of benadry wd but probably due to hydroxyzine.

I am really starting to wonder if my issue is wd related however my medical doc had no idea of the possible cause.

I told her I had been thinking wd was the cause. To her benefit, though she stated she'd never heard of such,  she didn't disregard the possibility.

At any rate I am exceedingly grateful that I have progressed so well. I have no doubt that I have been very fortunate.

I am still taking Ambien 5mg nightly for sleep. The past 10-14 nights my sleep has been very weird. I see illusions of objects and vivid colors that are not real. I get into troubling conversations with "little people" that are not real either. I tell them to stop bothering me. I tell them they are not real. I believe the ambien has me in a twlight where I'm neither asleep or awake. Last night I had to get up and go to the recliner to sleep because these illusions were disturbing me so much. What is even more odd is that I don't have the experiences

if I am not laying all the way down. So sleeping in the recliner was fine.

I am going to start my taper tonight from 5 mg to 2.5mg  (since I was able to drop from 10mg -5mg without too much trouble)

You stopped the Benadryl cold turkey on December 7 and started hydroxyzine on December 14. And then you started hallucinating.

This may not be exclusively from the Ambien. You could be dealing with:

  • Benadryl withdrawal
  • a drug interaction between Ambien and Hydroxzyine (see this drug interaction report)
  • or your nervous system is now so destabilized from all of these abrupt changes, you're experiencing side effects of Ambien, which can include hallucinations.

We recommend going no faster than 10% per month based on the prior month's dose (not the original dose).

If the hallucinations don't resolve over the next couple of days and you start having sleep trouble from the Ambien reduction, you may want to updose. It's possible that some of your symptoms are not exclusive to Ambien. Also, you may want to dose the Ambien at least 2 hours a apart from the hydroxizine to prevent the possible drug interaction.

@Shep thank you for the quick response! I hadn't even considered the ambien hydroxyzine combo could be causing the weirdness.

But thankfully the hallucinations didn't occur last night with only the 2.5mg ambien.

Also my seasonal allergies have acted up since 12/22 so I have been taking OTC Sineoff for a few days.

However when I take sineoff I don't take hydroxyzine since they are both antihistamine.

Merry Christmas Shep. I hope Santa is very good to you this year!🎄🎅

I'm very glad to read the reduction in Ambien made the hallucinations go away. How did you sleep on the reduced dose?

You may want to look into more holistic ways of handling seasonal allergies. It's possible switching around the OTC drugs are adding to the nervous system destabilization. Just a thought. If the allergies are severe, it may not be possible to avoid taking anything.

Good to hear, Lucy! I'm happy for you!💪

July 2015: the 20mg citalopram for great stress begins

After two years I start tapering (slow but without medical advice) and I guess wrongly. First up to 10 mg, then 5 mg and 2 mg (liquid solution) and skips

January 2020 (I don't remember exactly the day): off citalopram (last dose 2mg).

June 2020: adrenal crash. The beginning of Hell on Earth

Current supplement:

- saffron pill (20 mg) + vit. E, omega 3 (EPA + DHA) 2g, magnesium bisglycinate 300 mg, iron , vitamin D3 (2500ui) +K7 (50 ui), vitamin C (1g) + quercitin (25 mg), theanine (as necessary).

Try meditating / mindfulness, walking every day, CBT/ACT, massage.

Update:

Seasonal allergies have been kicking my butt. Forecast is saying pollen count will continue to be high until end of January.

I had to switch from Hydroxyzine to Allegra D 12 hr. Still very little allergy relief.  But no obvious side effects.

I added Vitamin D3 to hopefully help ward off covid.

Ambien still at 2.5 mg

* Itching/crawly scalp is bearable.

Research has led me to believe my problem is Neuropathic itch due to damaged CNS. Not histamine related. I believe it will heal over time.

I have no other WD symptoms at this time.

Changed from Allegra D to Allegra plus Flonase nasal spray about 2 weeks ago. My allergies are under control.

No other med changes.

A few mornings now have been waking with cortisol spikes of nausea and sickening heat. Having occasional brain zaps, brain fog and irritable mood. Yuck.

May be due to the allergy meds, which I can't change right now, or I may be in my first normal WD wave.

Also I have ongoing problems that I believe are WD related although I haven't found them mentioned in any SA posts. However I didn't have these issues prior to WD.

Since stopping the drugs in April 2020 I have been very intolerant of my husband of 38 years. He is a very nice person but it seems just about everything he does annoys me.  I even moved out for a while.

My other issue is odd to me and I don't really know how to explain it. But it has gotten continually worse.

The whole idea of a partner relationship seems strange to me now. I see couples holding hands or touching in any way and it kind of makes me ill.  I do not want my husband to touch me so I completely avoid all contact. Any sexual references on TV pretty much make me nauseous.

Yes, this sounds VERY WD related. Please see these threads for why it seems people and circumstances get on our nerves all the time during withdrawal. We're very reactive because our nervous systems are destabilized, as explained here:

Toxic Antidepressants - Neuro-Emotions

Neuro emotions

It sounds like you have PSSD, also very common. For more, please see:

PSSD Post-SSRI sexual dysfunction

You may also find this thread helpful:

My wife has just left me

If you can recognize this as withdrawal and have a conversation with your husband to let him know it's not him, it's psychiatric drug withdrawal, it may help.

@Shep thank you. I had actually spent hours last night reading some of the forums re: relationships which included My wife just left me.

The neuro-emotions section is very enlightening. I was aware of my anger issues that began in April but not to the true extent. Yeah, I'm pretty messed up and angry at my anger. I have had so many of the n-e  over the past 24 yrs of my on/off psych drug history and didn't even realize it was the drugs and not me.

As related to my recent WD I had been focusing on other symptoms and thinking I was doing pretty good. I had blamed a lot of my anger emotions toward my husband on too much covid seclusion togetherness.  But I wasn't able to explain away the current non-love emotion.

I will post my issue in one of the current forums and hope to get feedback from others that are having the same experience.

Hi @Kingfisher86 how are you???

I am starting to see glimpses of myself and it sure is encouraging when it occurs. The anger thing toward my husband has been unreal. I believe I am working through a lot of things that I wasn't aware of before. Sometimes I feel like I live in bizarro world like I'm trying to figure out what is real. It sounds strange because it is:) Some days I feel like I have it figured out and then bam!  I am way too old for this!!!

Good news is we have decided to move back closer to our children/grandchildren and friends. We had only been in this new area for 2 years when covid hit and I started WD.  So I had just started making friends and then everything suddenly stopped. So I have a lot of hope for the future right now. Also a big plus is my husband and I are learning to communicate better. 38 yrs together and just starting to communicate. I am finding (in hind site) that my self blame for everything wrong in life is what pushed me toward the psych drugs in the first place. I am definitely healing!!!

Most of the physical symptoms of WD are so much better. I still have the scalp and face itching which I may have to live with but I can manage. The brain zaps and overall weirdness feelings come but doesn't stay long.

I probably gave you way more information than you were asking:) But you did ask! lol

I hope all of this WD is well behind you and hope you are doing great!!!!!!

This made me laugh for a sec.😅 You know I felt old when I was 14. So I came to realise it has nothing to do with age. It has to do with us being overwhelmed and tired😰 It’s been a lot to handle for the past few months.

This is such a good sentence🤩 I think we endure hardships easier when there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I am struggling with this but it is getting slowly better.

Definitely better😅 but I still have to work with my emotions and WD is making it harder but I will get there. If next 6 months are as healing as previous, I am looking forward to them.
