Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted July 10, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted July 10, 2014 Thanks MammaP! I'm still doing ok. Will continue to hold until early August. I'll check in when I am about to start tapering again. I have been doing fun things that have been all-day events and having fun ( a ball game.. went to a couple of movies with a friend etc.) but I do miss the feeling of elation, laughing hysterically, feeling free etc. I feel SOME enjoyment & satisfaction but still flat. I really, really hate being "in the moment" and recognizing that what I am feeling ( flat) is not only not normal but that I have no control over that lack of emotion. . At least I have had windows when similarly I have been "in the moment" and realize that I am having a blast. THAT is normal & I won't be satisfied until my life is more full of having a blast than being flat and meh. Baby steps. ….. Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted July 15, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted July 15, 2014 Still doing ok. I have better days than bad. No days of feeling SUPER great as I did when I first started to taper after a 4 month hold but at least I had a glimpse of what my future will be like. I'm still glad that I have a good reason to hold ( a trip to Washington to visit oldest daughter and grand kids) until the beginning of August. At that time I will be more prudent in being steady and slow in tapering. Just a note to self… a great explanation of what's going on in the brain: Dear Augustiny, I'm so very happy we were able to ease your suffering. We have all been through what you are going through so there is nothing nicer than to see that what we have learnt through suffering can help someone else. This site contains an amazing wealth of information to help us cope with what we are going through. After I abruptly discontinued my medication and while waiting for my CNS to recover after reinstating, I was so unwell that I could hardly do anything else for a long time except for reading things here. Another very important thread that helped me survive those difficult months was this one about windows and waves pattern of recovery. http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/82-the-windows-and-waves-pattern-of-recovery/ I'm hoping for a nice window for you soon. big hug, bubble PS What Rhi wrote also helped me a lot to understand what was happening for teh first time after trying to come off for so many times Rhi on how drugs change our brains/regowing a new brain through tapering A lot of people, including healthcare practitioners; in fact, I guess, most people-- are operating from entirely the wrong paradigm, or way of thinking, about these meds. They're thinking of them like aspirin--as something that has an effect when it's in your system, and then when it gets out of your system the effect goes away. That's not what happens with medications that alter neurotransmitter function, we are learning. What happens when you change the chemistry of the brain is, the brain adjusts its chemistry and structure to try to return to homeostasis, or biochemical and functional balance. It tries to restabilize the chemistry. For example: SSRI antidepressants work as "serotonin reuptake inhibitors." That is, they cause serotonin to remain in the space between neurons, rather than being taken back up into the cells to be re-used, like it would be in a normal healthy nondrugged brain. So the brain, which wants to re-establish normal signaling and function, adapts to the higher level of serotonin between neurons (in the "synapse", the space between neurons where signals get passed along). It does this by removing serotonin receptors, so that the signal is reduced and changed to something closer to normal. It also decreases the amount of serotonin it produces overall. To do that, genes have to be turned on and off; new proteins have to be made; whole cascades of chemical reactions have to be changed, which means turning on and off OTHER genes; cells are destroyed, new cells are made; in other words, a complex physiologic remodeling takes place. This takes place over time. The brain does not grow and change rapidly. This is a vast oversimplification of the amount of adaptation that takes place in the brain when we change its normal chemistry, but that's the principle. When we stop taking the drug, we have a brain that has designed itself so that it works in the presence of the drug; now it can't work properly without the drug because it's designed itself so that the drug is part of its chemistry and structure. It's like a plant that has grown on a trellis; you can't just yank out the trellis and expect the plant to be okay. When the drug is removed, the remodeling process has to take place in reverse.SO--it's not a matter of just getting the drug out of your system and moving on. If it were that simple, none of us would be here. It's a matter of, as I describe it, having to grow a new brain. I believe this growing-a-new-brain happens throughout the taper process if the taper is slow enough. (If it's too fast, then there's not a lot of time for actually rebalancing things, and basically the brain is just pedaling fast trying to keep us alive.) It also continues to happen, probably for longer than the symptoms actually last, throughout the time of recovery after we are completely off the drug, which is why recovery takes so long. With multiple drugs and a history of drug changes and cold turkeys, all of this becomes even more complicated. And if a person is started on these kinds of drugs at an early age before the brain has ever completely established normal mature functioning--well, it can't be good. (All of which is why I recommend an extremely slow taper particularly to anyone with a multiple drug history, a history of many years on meds, a history of past cold turkeys or frequent med changes, and a history of being put on drugs at a young age.)This isn't intended to scare people, but hopefully to give you some idea of what's happening, and to help you respect and understand the process so you can work with it; ALSO, because you are likely to encounter many, many people who still believe these drugs work kind of like aspirin, or a glass of wine, and all you need to do is stop and get it out of your system. Now you can explain to them that no, getting it out of your system is not the issue; the issue is, you need to regrow or at least remodel your brain. This is a long, slow, very poorly understood process, and it needs to be respected. Fall 1995 xanax, zoloft. switched to Serzone 1996- spring 2003serzone/ xanax/ lightbox. b]Fall 2003- Fall 2004? Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted July 18, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted July 18, 2014 I've had three excellent days in a row: energetic, happy, hopeful. This is after cutting by 3 % over a 6-7 week period and sliding into an approximate 2 week wave beginning toward the end of the taper and lasting 10 days beyond. I will continue this hold and won't start up again with the micro taper until after I get back from my trip, have recovered from it, feel strong ( I'm anticipating a "relapse wave" simply from the stress of traveling, visiting etc. ) and rested. I really want to be successful and I have discovered through trial and error ( TINY trials & TINY errors) that the FASTEST way to taper is to taper at the SLOWEST rate possible!!! Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted July 21, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted July 21, 2014 I am doing so well … I find myself tearing up and FEELING when I see touching stories/ news clips on TV. This is such an improvement..to just feel. It used to embarrass me ( and my children) when I would do this..tear up at the drop of a hat, but now I an so grateful that I'm thawing out from these numbing drugs. I'm very nervous about this trip setting me back. It won't be any sort of emotional trip ..there shouldn't be any controversy or anything like that..just visiting our oldest & her family. But there is a time change, we will be traveling and traveling usually makes me constipated. Just when my digestive system has gotten "regular" again after a month of being messed up when tapering. My tools will be to make sure that my med schedule remains the same..not sure how I'll manage that.. and to get plenty of exercise. They have a heated pool and I love to swim so I'll concentrate on enjoying the experience. The grand kids will tire me out but my husband will be there plus they have a nanny..so we won't be "In charge" and I should be able to sneak away to lay down & read if I need a break. ALL of the pluses are there to tame the traveling blues…I guess I just need to remember that and concentrate on it. Trying to talk myself into a good trip…mostly for selfish reasons: I want to enjoy it yet feel rested enough when I get back that it won't take too much to get to where I am right now which is feeling good after a rough(er) taper. I have ulterior motives here…I want to come back and resume that taper again SOON once back… but know that the temptation may have to be resisted until I am back to where I am right now today... Moderator Emeritus mammaP Posted July 21, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted July 21, 2014 It sounds like it will be a great trip RU, I hope you have a fantastic time and make some beautiful memories. I would try and keep the dosing schedule every 24 hours or whatever your schedule is and forget about time. When you get back you will be at exactly the same times and will not have to make any adjustments. It will be a bit difficult if the time difference means you would be taking them in the middle of the night but I think I would rather keep to the hours between doses rather that the time of day, if you see what I mean. I would absolutely HATE it if my schedule got messed up, but I am a bit of a worry wort, lol. Hope that makes sense, I don't think I make a lot of sense today, I'm tired out with my own grandson visiting and there is no-one else to share him with, I forgot just how demanding teenagers are! **I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge. Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted July 21, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted July 21, 2014 Thanks MammaP. I THINK I understand what you are saying about dosing. You suggesting that I stay on "my time" & keep taking my meds every ____ hrs. even if I have to set a clock ( at night) to stick to it? Because that is something that I thought I should do too. I have a little battery operated alarm clock & I think that I will do what you suggest ( my intuition was telling me the same thing) & bring it so that I can stay on the same dosing schedule. Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted August 3, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted August 3, 2014 I'm baaaaccck!! The trip was awesome and this is surprising… I had no problems with the time change and meds. I did have one day where I basically slept for 3 hrs. one afternoon, woke up, ate supper, went back to bed and slept all night. That was strange but then again it was toward the end of the trip and on a day that I had spent in the pool. I have had MORE trouble since I've been back mostly with waking up around 3-4 am and not getting back to sleep or having a hard time. Not sure what's up with that ..may be the time schedule? So anyway… after a longer hold today is my first day back to tapering the lexapro. I sure hope this goes well. I have had some pretty good windows where I feel about as normal as I ever have. It seems like there are windows and then there are WINDOWS!! The reason I want to get the lex down as soon as I can ( and yes I know better than to push it).. I have become aware especially lately that the xanax definitely does a number on me. It can make me drowsy after a dose which I hate when I am feeling really good but I am "addicted" to it and know I will have to do a slow taper off. But that taper has to wait until I am good and stable on 10 mg of lex. I am just under 13.6 mg now. I'll let you know how it goes. It usually takes a few days at least after a cut for the WD symptoms to appear if they do ( fingers crossed…NO!! ) RU Fall 1995 xanax, zoloft. switched to Serzone 1996- spring 2003serzone/ xanax/ lightbox. b]Fall 2003- Fall 2004? Moderator Emeritus Petunia Posted August 12, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted August 12, 2014 I'm glad to hear your drop went well How many mg are you on now? Are you still making 1.5% cuts? What does liz/tabs (in your signature) mean? I seem to be full of questions today. Wishing you continued good feelings. I'm not a doctor. My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one. My Introduction Thread Full Drug and Withdrawal History Brief Summary Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects 2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010 Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal) May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins. Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens. Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days. April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close. VIDEO: Where did the chemical imbalance theory come from? Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted August 13, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted August 13, 2014 Thanks everyone… Petu I'm ready for bed now but will answer your good & thought- provoking questions soon. I had lots of aches and pains today after a long run of 6 good days. Stinks. I'm vacillating about what course to take next… hold or cut by an even smaller amt. I haven't decided. I am simply pasting this here for my future reference as it may be relevant one day. RU: Question - since this last cut of 3% from .0.5mg to 0.485 mg lexapro i am finding increase in these symptoms the longer i hold. feel like there is something that happens a few months out like the way w/d symptoms of too fast taper can hit you 3-4 months out. Anyone else experience this once you got down to very low doses? hot flashes - some really knock me for a loop depression/intrusive thoughts - this seems worse in the afternoon sleep problems - waves of - waking at 3:30 am and cant get back to sleep increased fatigue - could be because of recent wave of sleep deprivation but havent felt this kind of tired before. hits me late afternoon Nerve issues - neck/jaw bad tension and pins and needles more fluctuation of gastro issues - especially dizziness and nausea Thanks, Over the years I have encountered situations where (especially with benzos) people felt like they were getting worse during long holds. What I usually say is, it's up to you; if you want to experiment, try a very small cut and see if it makes you feel better. Keep your journal carefully and document all changes. Some people do need to do that, and it helps them. It's tricky, because whether a person is changing meds or not, symptoms will wax and wane. People who have come off their meds completely and are in the protracted withdrawal period will have spells when new symptoms appear and they feel worse than ever. That appears to be part of the healing process. Some people believe that periods of worse symptoms actually indicate healing; they have found that after the worst periods they will often experience a shift, a distinct improvement. I can't speak to that from personal experience, but I can't say it's impossible. This situation of yours makes me think of that, because I think that right now you are still in the recovery and healing period from your past years of med madness, so it's possible that your body is taking advantage of this long hold and doing some long-needed catch-up. That's why I tend to encourage you to hold. I think you haven't really had time to get to a fully stable homeostasis, that your nervous system is still doing a lot of healing, and that you're at a low enough dose that the drug effects are probably less harmful than the withdrawal effects. That's just my "take" on it, I could be wrong of course, and you and your own body are the experts on you! Anyway, I won't yell at you if you decide to experiment with a small cut, but if it were me, at this low of a dose and with such a chaotic recent history, I would probably extend the hold to at least six months before doing that. That's just me, of course. I'm a strong proponent of giving the nervous system lots of chemically stable healing time. Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted August 19, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted August 19, 2014 Ru....I have been here for a few years too. Do you drop all of the meds at the same time? Or just the Lexapro. And one more question...... Do you find that the tinier the drop in dose the less WD symptoms you have..... MM funny....the kids pat you on the shoulder:) I have tapered only one drug at a time. I know my signature is a mess. I'm not positive I can make it any clearer & think once I'm done and look back I can summarize in such a way to make it more useful for people…but not now. Yes. I am definitely finding that the tinier the drop in dose the fewer WD symptoms I have. There is a wild card there though. Because there are no WD symptoms it is tempting to drop a tiny bit too frequently ( like days apart) and then all of a sudden WHAMO… WD can hit hard. That happened to me ONCE. I'd like to avoid it and so I keep track & pay close attention to the OVERALL % drop in a months time and try to be conservative… like no more than 6% / month. I am no expert in this and haven't been tapering the lexapro for very long. As a matter of fact, I don't know that I will be much use in helping others other than saying to go slow. Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted August 25, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted August 25, 2014 I continue my lexapro taper and all is well. I am now diluting the 10mg/ml liquid portion of my daily dose in water instead of taking it directly. I was putting the appropriate drops on a plate & licking it. * Perhaps the liquid was absorbed too quickly on my tongue ? I am down to 13.2 mg of lexapro. My goal being 10 mg. I am looking at the possibility of NOT being done until next spring… depending on if my micro taper "catches up" with me at some point resulting in a longer hold. Keeping an open mind, listening to your body, and not setting definitive goals that just set you up for disappointment are key here. It is difficult because right now the xanax continues to make me drowsy. I need to taper it but not until the lexapro is done. NON- drug strategies for success: It is approaching Fall. I will dust off my light box and begin taking vitamin D3 again soon…both by starting slowly and building up to what has worked to ward off the winter blues in the past. Over the summer I have built up some stamina & muscle tone. I will pretend winter is not approaching and will continue with the walking, gentle stretching etc. Doing pretty well. Just wish I could speed this up… but know I shouldn't… and so won't. RU Fall 1995 xanax, zoloft. switched to Serzone 1996- spring 2003serzone/ xanax/ lightbox. b]Fall 2003- Fall 2004? Lexapro 10 mg. Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted September 14, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted September 14, 2014 Update... I have made the decision to do a long hold (once again...sigh) once I can dry cut my 20 mg lexapro tablets to 12.8 mg. I resumed tapering after a previous long hold at 14.4 mg lexapro. That resumption was on May 6, 2014. I estimate that I will be down to 12.8 mg by mid October , 2014. What that means is that it has taken a little over five months to taper lexapro by just over 11 %. That averages out to a successful taper of lexapro by tapering by just over 2% every month. That time frame includes a 3 and 1/2 week hold at 13.6 mg lezapro. I will begin a long hold at 12.8 mg for two reasons including...1) to give my brain a break & 2) for convenience sake. Giving my brain a break is self explanatory... the convenience is because I am going on a 17 day , family;y trip to Maui from January 8th- 25th. Because I am having to taper so slowly I will not make it to the next lowest dose that I can dry cut to ( 12 mg) before the trip and taking tablets to Maui instead of tablets, liquid, pipettes, glassware etc.... just makes sense. I was hoping that I could push things a little faster but having listened to the advice here and to my body and symptoms I just plain could not do it. I am so grateful for everyone here, for having the luxury of being retired ( and thus time to rest, recover etc.) and for my own ability to be patient with myself ( cough cough sputter sputter grrrrrrrrr....... NOT happy...yet!) in order to get relief from these drugs. So.... in summary.... I am currently taking 150 mg. Wellbutrin XL, 2.5 mg xanax , and soon 12.8 mg lexapro. I will stay there until the end of January, 2015 at which point I will resume ( I think.. depending on how I am feeling..I MAY wait until spring) my taper of lexapro to get it down to 10 mg. THEN..... at some point I have to begin to tackle the xanax.... to get it to ZERO. THAT will be my biggest challenge I believe, so all of the above exercise in patience is juts practice. LATER............ I will be stopping in. RU Fall 1995 xanax, zoloft. switched to Serzone 1996- spring 2003serzone/ xanax/ lightbox. b]Fall 2003- Fall 2004? Lexapro 10 mg. Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted September 15, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted September 15, 2014 Maui is exotic!! Our middle is living there currently as her husband has been hired to organize a joint distribution center between two craft beers: Stone & Maui Breweries. They are an adventuresome two! I would have rather done this trip in another year because of finances but because of the precarious status of the joint venture ( things aren't going so well in Maui with the distribution center!) and the fact that our youngest is planning to start a family next year , it just worked out this way. Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted October 14, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted October 14, 2014 Wow. How time flies!! I continue to do ok. I have one "bad" day every week or so. I said last time that I was going to stop my taper until after a trip but have decided to continue to the next dose of dry cut. Last week I made it to 12.8 mg of lexapro. I reached that just a tad sooner than I had thought & so am going to continue to taper to 12 mg using the combination of tablets and liquid. I am taking a chance here... I want to be STABLE at 12 mg by 12/31..the day I fly out for my trip. Cross your fingers for me. If this works it will be a huge boost psychologically for me because I'm anticipating feeling pretty good once I get back from my trip and take a few weeks to rest up. Then hopefully I can continue with my taper from 12 mg to my target of 10 mg and be done with it sooner than I had hoped. I have to keep my hopes up but first things first. Crossed fingers that he taper from 12.8 to 12 mg before 12/31 goes well. I am on day 4 of a 1 % cut and had some insomnia.... but slept all night last night. Par for the course. I shall remain vigilant and strong yet not underestimate the viscousness of my brain organ & its revenge..... Moderator Emeritus areyouthere Posted November 15, 2014 Author Moderator Emeritus Share Posted November 15, 2014 My fingers and toes are crossed for you. How are you doing so far? Hi MM , I just saw this. Things are going well!! I'm down to 12.3 mg and having the same pattern with each tiny cut... a day or so of symptoms.. usually insomnia & aches and pains following. Unfortunately winter has struck where I live ( suddenly) and so my exercise pattern has had to change drastically: instead of walks I am snow shoeing daily. This is good and bad I guess.. the good is that I work different muscle groups, the bad is that it is hard to distinguish muscle aches from the change in routine from those from withdrawal. Since I have made such good progress toward my 12 mg goal by 12/31 I will likely do a two week hold here pretty quick. It is tempting to continue to taper since it has gone well but I also remind myself that all too often on here I have seen that backfire. I will slow down and stop at 12 mg until after my trip as I had planned. Thanks for asking. RU In SNOW country. mattinsmom
I haven't had to pull out the snow shoes yet. I'm almost looking forward to it. I don't seem to mind the cold so much when there is snow. I think it is because the snow is reflective and at least it is bright out. Glad to hear that things are going well enough with your taper that you are willing to consider continuing. More glad to hear that you are remembering your patterns of w/d and choosing to stick with the plan of slow and then post trip. Maui is worth putting off the cut.
