Icandothis
Hello!I would like to begin a very slow taper of Fluoxetine (10mg) about 7 years. Attempted two years ago but didn't do properly and doctors convinced me that it wasn't the reduction of medicine doing this to me (oodles of withdrawals). Reinstated to full dose. I am currently on tablet form.My question...I want to do a 10% conservative reduction. Should I continue on tablet and cut and weigh or should I transition to capsule and count beads ( not time release ).. Requested liquid from doctor but was told since I am on such a small dose liquid would be too difficult. I am nervous to begin this journey for fear of what happened before but am going to forge ahead.So....cutting and weighing pill or counting beads and weighing for capsule? Which will allow for a more accurate, easier very slow reduction and someday jump off???Would appreciate feedback please!!! 08/2014 10 mg 8/28/14 switched to liquid 2.5 timeline-9/6/14 2.30=9.2 ...10/03/14 2.07=8.28 ...11/1/14 1.9=7.611/3014 1.72=6.88 ... 12/26 1.54=6.16... 2/16 1.46=5.84 switch to 5% per 3 wks3/14/15 1.38=5.52 ... 4/4/15 1.30=5.2 ...4/25/15 1.24=4.965/16/15 1.18=4.72 ... 6/6/15 1.12=4.48...6/26/15 1.06=4.24 switch to 5%ish per two weeks7/15/15 1.0=4. 7/30/15 .96=3.84 8/13/15 .91=3.64 or .90=3.60 8/29/15 .86=3.44 9/12/15 .82= 3.28 9/26/15 .78=3.12 10/11/15 .74=2.96 10/25/15 .70=2.8 hit a wall been holding since12/26/15 2.5% decrease .68=2.72 1/9/16 .66=2.64 2/6/16 .63=2.52 3/3/16 ,60=2.4 3/26/16 57=2.28 4/30/16 .54=2.16mg 6/4/16 .52=2.08 8/5/16 updose .75=3.0. 9/6/16 1.00=4.0 5mg 2/10/17 6mg 2/17/17 8 mg 3/17/17 7mg ? 3/18/17 6mg 4/1/17 5mg @4/17 4.5mg=1.12 5/19/17 4 mg=1.00ml 7/15/17 .98=3.96 Link to comment
Moderator Emeritus Petunia Posted August 22, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted August 22, 2014 Welcome Icandothis, Sorry to hear that your previous attempt at stopping fluoxetine didn't work, what method did you use? I'm glad you have found us now, by tapering safely, using the 10% method, I'm confident you will have a better experience this time and be able to come off your medication. Fluoxetine is one of the easier antidepressants to taper from. Here is a link with tips specifically for tapering off it: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/759-tips-for-tapering-off-prozac-fluoxetine/ You can make liquid yourself from the tablets, or you could be firm with you doctor about wanting to use the liquid fluoxetine. You will find a lot of friendly help and support here, stay in touch and let us know what you decide. Petu. I'm not a doctor. My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Icandothis
Hello, Thank you for responding and how great to have an online support system of people that do not judge and can relate. Previously I dropped from 10-5 no problem except stomach issues which were totally liveable... Then at a doc appt I was told what a silly dose I was on I should just stop so I dropped to 2.5 may have missed a day of med too week and a half later symptoms hit went back to 5 then within a month about went to 10 and symptoms continued until spring of that year..( I started in October that year.... Is the capsule route a way to go or should I stick with tablet...I am committed enough to this if need be I will crush pill weigh it on scale and put in empty capsule myself if that what it takes... I haven't started yet will be in a few days but want to know whether to stick with tablet or switch script to capsule and count beads... Moderator Emeritus Petunia Posted August 23, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted August 23, 2014 Is the capsule route a way to go or should I stick with tablet...I am committed enough to this if need be I will crush pill weigh it on scale and put in empty capsule myself if that what it takes... I haven't started yet will be in a few days but want to know whether to stick with tablet or switch script to capsule and count beads... As far as I'm aware Fluoxetine comes as a tablet, a liquid or a capsule which contains power, so there are no beads to count. Its completely your decision about how you want to taper, which ever method seems convenient for you. Most people find using a liquid easy and accurate, especially as the dose gets lower. The tablet will dissolve in water, or you can crush and weigh it. Read through the link again and if you have any questions you can post there or here in your thread. Also I have seen your post and am curious are you currently med free? I am just looking for hope at the end of this to return to a "normal" symptom free version of myself....I'm just scared to begin fearful of experiencing those symptoms again but am hoping and assuming that because I reduced by 50% and was not aware of slow tapering that perhaps that is why I experienced what I had Yes, I haven't taken any meds/drugs for over a year, but I'm one of those unfortunate people who got it all wrong, came off much too fast and found this site too late to reinstate. I'm in protracted withdrawal and only time is going to fix me. But it will be different for you, with the information and support here, you will be able to taper safely. Many people find that the 10% method works well and they are able to slowly come of their drugs and remain functional in life at the same time. There is a lot of good information and support here. I'm sure that your previous attempt at a 50% cut was what caused your withdrawal symptoms Please see the Important Topics in Tapering for more information and here's another important read which explains our basic method of tapering: Why Taper By 10% of My Dosage? Please put your drug and withdrawal history in your signature. Putting a short version of your drug history in your signature helps people understand your context, it appears below each of your posts. Here are instructions for how to do it: http://survivinganti...your-signature/ You can use this thread as your ongoing journal to track progress and communicate with the community, add to it whenever you want. Icandothis
Ok another question but I can't figure out how and if I can start a new post... Can I successfully create my own liquid form with my tablet and use a dropper ( yes I know the taste will be not so pleasant ) instead of trying to get liquid form of medicine? Reason being once when I switched my one generic form of fluoxetine to another I developed stomach issues so I am questioning my sensitivity to different manufacturers of the medicine... Then maybe I can crush and weigh the milligrams and then create a liquid and place in dropper ( sounding like a chemist in the making) Or do I go for the gusto and try the liquid form ? I know I am intense in the thinking process of it all... And Petu I have read through your threads, you have been amazing through this process 08/2014 10 mg 8/28/14 switched to liquid 2.5 timeline-9/6/14 2.30=9.2 ...10/03/14 2.07=8.28 ...11/1/14 1.9=7.611/3014 1.72=6.88 ...
Moderator Emeritus Rhiannon Posted August 23, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted August 23, 2014 Hi-- Yes, you can create your own suspension in water and use that to reduce, many of us do that. You can also be more firm with your doctor about your own past experience with withdrawal and your desire to reduce more slowly this time (or find a new provider). I would recommend printing out the paper here: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/6036-why-taper-paper-demonstrates-importance-of-gradual-change-in-plasma-concentration/ which clearly demonstrates the importance of slow reduction at the smallest doses. Take a look at the charts on page 4 and you can see that receptor occupancy only goes down slowly at higher doses but drops precipitously once you get to low doses. A doctor should be able to understand that. If your doctor still refuses to cooperate with you (and I know how they are, if he does it's not your fault, they can be very arrogant that way)--well, it's up to you. I'd be looking for a new doctor, but in the meantime, yes, certainly you can make your own liquid by dissolving the tablets in water. I do recommend tapering by liquid as by far the easiest and most precise way to make reductions and do a slow taper. I'd also recommend getting your hands on a copy of Anatomy of an Epidemic by Robert Whitaker, an important book to read. Good luck, welcome to the forum! You're going to do fine this time as long as you take it slow. Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease". Long story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything. Amitryptiline, Prozac, bupropion, buspirone, flurazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, Paxil, citalopram, lamotrigine, gabapentin...probably more I've forgotten. Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010. Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea. Icandothis
Thank you so appreciative for a response I am currently reading the antidepressant solution by Joseph glenmullen Book and will read the other when done with this one... You have me food for thought ... Instead of weighing powder after crushing tablet should I dissolve the pill and then just use dropper to obtain the correct dose? Wondering how long you can keep the solution and if dissolving and saving beyond a day influences the effectiveness or potency of the medicine 08/2014 10 mg 8/28/14 switched to liquid 2.5 timeline-9/6/14 2.30=9.2 ...10/03/14 2.07=8.28 ...11/1/14 1.9=7.611/3014 1.72=6.88 ...

Moderator Emeritus Rhiannon Posted August 30, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted August 30, 2014 I don't have an answer to your question, but just want to say it sounds like you're starting with the liquid, congratulations! Please keep us posted on how the taper goes even when it's uneventful and going along well--that's how I learn, by hearing peoples' experiences, and often we only hear from people who are having problems, which is useful, but it's also useful to hear when things are going right. And with your attitude and sensible approach, I think things are going to go right, for you. Of course there are occasional wobbles, but I think you're going to do great. (Just make sure that you remember that you need to go slower, not faster, at the lowest doses.) Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. Icandothis
Hi even though you didn't have a tip I appreciate your response. I agree I am the same way, I learn and grow by sharing experiences with others. Moderator Emeritus mammaP Posted August 31, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted August 31, 2014 Just pick one, they are all pretty much the same I think. Just make sure that you don't buy them too big to swallow! I've never actually done it myself but did look at them in case I needed to. There were very large ones that I wouldn't have been able to swallow easily. **I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge. (9mg)...then my next 10% would be 2.025.(8.1mg)...ummm how will I be able to do that exact measurement with a syringe? at this larger does am I better switching back to tablet until I get down to smaller increments?

Icandothis
Is it possible for my mind to be playing tricks on me? Only a week with a little under a 10% reduction and starting to be paranoid that withdrawal is happening...jelly leg feeling today....am I just anticipating and therefore causing this? Of course any new physical symptom to me indicates a disease (that is where my mind goes ) how does one handle the tricks a mind can play on you?
Moderator Emeritus Petunia Posted September 9, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted September 9, 2014 Many people feel some withdrawal effects from making a 10% cut, they usually settle down within a couple of weeks. But you have recently changed from a tablet to a liquid, so that may be having an effect too. Shaking, trembling, jittery feeling and muscle weakness are common withdrawal symptoms. Here is a link to a list of some of the more common withdrawal symptoms: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/2390-dr-joseph-glenmullens-withdrawal-symptom-checklist/ One way of handling mind tricks is realizing that they may actually not be mind tricks, withdrawal symptoms are very real, but not harmful as part of a safe, careful tapering program. Learning to accept them, realizing that they are temporary and that they will pass is the best way. If you are still experiencing symptoms, then that means your nervous system hasn't yet stabilized and you need to hold a while longer before making the next cut. I'm not a doctor. My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one. My Introduction Thread Full Drug and Withdrawal History Brief Summary Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects 2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010 Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal) May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins. Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens. Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days. April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close. VIDEO: Where did the chemical imbalance theory come from? Icandothis
Hello Thank you for responding oh I do believe and know that the withdrawals are real...it's just for me I'm so hyper aware and anticipate that something is going to happen so I don't know if it's my mind creating it or the true withdrawal itself...I frustrate myself I guess I just get nervous about how to live life and attempt to come off the medicine and that's when mentally I get nervous to do this I get nervous to deal with withdrawals while trying to live life and then I question staying on them just to avoid even though deep inside I don't want to stay on them. Moderator Emeritus mammaP Posted October 8, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted October 8, 2014 Withdrawal comes in windows and waves, and it is a sign that you are healing when the waves are reduced to what I call 'ripples' . My personal experience is that the waves are becoming less intense and are much easier to live with. I don't cut if I am in a wave and hold until I have been stable for a few months. It is a long long taper for me but I would rather do that than go back to the hellish waves because of tapering too fast! . Keep the cuts small and hold until you have felt stable for a good few weeks and you will get better. The last bit is usually hardest but when you have liquid it is much easier to cut by minute amounts. **I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge.
