The following was posted by a reviewer on the iherb site, offering her responses to the supplement 'Jarrow Formulas, TMG, Trimethyglycine.  I take the liberty of posting it here as I was struck by how much benefit she claims to have derived from TMG.  I am NOT in any way involved with the sale of this or any other health product.  The following testimonial is copied from: http://www.iherb.com/product-reviews/Jarrow-Formulas-TMG-Trimethylglycine-500-mg-120-Tablets/141/?p=1&fr=5

"TMG is a godsend. When I went off antidepressants rather suddenly and was fishing around for something to stop panic attacks and intense bad moods, TMG was the first consistent improvement. Four years later, it is still an indispensable part of my regimen. Perhaps its most important effect is recycling homocysteine into SAMe, which has antidepressant effects. Unchecked homocysteine sensitizes neurons to glutamate toxicity, and probably harms new neurons trying to grow in the hippocampus. Other B-vitamins have also helped me, especially B-2 and B-6 (pyridoxamine), along with fish oil and a non-choline source of uridine (for example magnesium orotate, or triacetyluridine). Some of these will help migraines and focus along with mood. I take 500 to 1000 mg TMG a day; much more may raise cholesterol. Don't mix with acetyl-l-carnitine (and in fact, if you're depressive, I'd advise against acetyl-l-carnitine altogether, thanks to its acetylcholinergic activity). TMG raises carnitine levels itself, and has a mild choline sparing effect. SAMe, by the way, is similar but not so safe; the surge in SAMe levels will create a surge in homocysteine. I tried combining the two, hoping TMG would recycle the homocysteine back SAMe, but I've found TMG on its own most stabilizing and effective."

If I wasn't so sick to death of supplements that don't help, I'd be tempted to try this ;-).

Thanks for info.

Cheers

Off all SSRIs as at November 2016.

Been on SSRIs (mainly Lexapro) for around 15 years.

failed attempts to go cold turkey before I got proper info on it.

Over last 2 years I've slowly gone from 20 mg Lexapro to 2.5 mg Lexapro.

on 25th Jan 2015 I've now moved to home made liquid Lexapro.

Plan is to drop roughly 0.2 mg per month over the next 1-2 years.

25th Jan 2015 2.5 mg Lexapro liquid.

24th Mar 2016 1.0 mg lexapro (crushed tablet mixed and refilled into capsules)

Planned to be at 0.0 mg lexapro by about October 2016.

I also take 50-100 mg modafinil per day, no short term plans of stopping/tapering modafinil but will re-evaluate after I'm off lexapro.

  • 5 weeks later...

From what I can figure looking at the site it contains betaine so it would be like eating a lot of beets... it is use to lower homocystine

Description
  • Reduces Homocysteine and Protects DNA
  • Dietary Supplement
  • Vegan
  • Suitable for Vegetarians/Vegans
  • Easy Solv

TMG provides trimethylglycine (a.k.a., anhydrous betaine), an important methyl donor. Methyl donors, such as TMG and folic acid, are required for converting homocysteine (a toxic amino acid and a serious healthy risk) back into methionine and for the accurate synthesis of DNA and RNA which is essential for the production of normal cells.

Suggested Use

Take 1 tablet 1 or 2 times per day with a meal or as directed by your qualified healthcare professional.

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

Trimethylglycine is a "methyl donor" and may speed up some metabolic processes, see http://www.uofmhealth.org/health-library/hn-2807004

Is it safe to use TMG while still tapering SSRIs?

I am considering it because I am using Niagen and I am on Luvox. I want to avoid the risk of undermethylation from the continuous use of Niagen but Idk if TMG is safe to take together with SSRIs due to its influence on SAMe.

Your thoughts?
