I'm doing good.  Thanks for asking.  I've had the exercise problem too so I feel for you.

I love exercising and for how awful it makes one feel after pushing too hard...that's rough.

It's encouraging to know others can relate.

I'm grateful to read your doing well : )

Making some progress, slowly but some.

Although I won’t right now, I feel like I need to exercise (irritability, feeling down).

I also notice my symptoms tend to be worse earlier in the day and decrease as the day goes on, especially after my afternoon lunch.

In light of this new observation, I believe my cortisol levels are out of whack (among however many other things).

Might be worse because I’m completely stopped exercising as well.

Still dealing with hot flashes (not as intense) dizziness (also not as bad), weakness, trembling, achy muscles, etc.

Not much else to do but hunker down and wait. I have been getting into video games again. I normally try to be more productive but since I’m a bit limited physically, I might as well keep my mind busy, which definitely helps. I enjoy reading everyday as well, so my mind is doing SOMETHING productive.lol

i have to admit, I’m a bit apprehensive about tapering off Zoloft. It seems like it’s going to be long and drawn out.

Does the 10% method allow you to live fairly normally while reducing or it just the better option? I know different people have different rates depending and I’ll be the same.

Aside from the difficulty of measuring new doses, does it become harder to taper?

For as much suffering as Zoloft has caused me, when it works, it asbsolutely helps my anxiety & depression.

As I have less of it in my system, I’m afraid it’s only going to grow more difficult to taper. You’ve made it far in your taper journey and it gives me much hope.

Exercise is one of the best ways to cope with anxiety but obviously we have some difficulty in that area.

Finally, one of the best benefits of Zoloft for me was the ability to think much more clearly. I think that’s one the biggest fears I have of tapering off. I don’t know if it’s the stimulating nature of the med (ADHD people often use stimulants for clarity) or the lack of critical mind chatter that was silenced.

Hi David,

If you are not feeling comfortable tapering off of Zoloft then perhaps now is not the time . I am hearing the hesitation in your last post.  It is such a personal decision, you need to do what's best for you, not what anybody else thinks you should do or implies that you should do.

I cannot do a 10% taper.  I do a 3% taper and do it anywhere between every three and six weeks depending on how I feel.  And yes this has allowed me to lead a normal life.  Once in a while I know if I have gone too fast because I get a flare up of a symptom but it is minor, nothing like when I went cold turkey or like when I was tapering too fast. However I have been doing this almost two years. The first year was very difficult.  The beginning of the second year was hard as well, but not quite as bad.  What made it difficult was that I was doing what was too large of a cut for me and I was doing it too quickly.  It took me a long time to figure out what was right for me.  This site helped me quite a bit.  It helped both by the direct advice I was given and also by reading other people's stories and really thinking about all the information I was getting.

I personally can't wait to stop taking the medication and never want to use it again. However David that is me. David I would suggest that you do whatever provides you with a comfortable life.  If I, or anyone else here, can help you do that then please let us do so. Remember there is more than one road to comfort and happiness.  My goal is to help assist you in finding your way, not to suggest that you do it my way.

Warm wishes,

RS

  • 2 weeks later...

6/18/18

Started feeling good last Friday afternoon. Almost like getting over a flu (took some ibuprofen which helped). Been on a good trek since. Not perfect but better.

That would make for about 3 weeks for my CNS to mellow out.

I’ve been thinking a lot. I don’t want to be dependent on medicine anymore. I want to take the cognitive behavior & natural / supplemental, essential oil, exercise route.

I’m planning on staying at my current dose for at least a few more months to give my CNS a bit more time for stability (hey maybe until the end of the year)

I also need to get my primary care physician on board with the 10% route.

i just don’t trust what Zoloft may be doing/altering in my body. It does help me immensely with anxiety and depression but there is just so much unknown about antidepressants...

Just wanted to post this for future reference.

I hope your all doing well, better or at least holding on to hope and taking it one day at a time.

Your quote below sounds like  a good idea. You'll know when it's time ti decrease.

When you are ready you will find support here.  Best place to be while going through a taper.

In the mean time I hope you continue to feel better and better.  If you get a few bad days now and then don't let it discourage you. That's natural too.

I can’t thank you enough for your support and encouragement. I’m having a bit of a backslide day today with brain fog and diziness/flu-like symptoms.

I know it’s temporary and I have to remember how far I’ve come but having someone reinforce that means so much to me.

How are you?

I hope and pray your doing well in your journey.

Hi David,

I just read your thread. I thought 10% would be fine for me (tapering off Paxil), but it’s not, so I’m doing 2.5% every three weeks or so. I have some dizziness and flu-like symptoms, not much energy, and an almost comical degree of brain fog, but am functional. Anxiety appears to come with withdrawal, as so many people mention it. I too am very glad to have found this site.

Long history with many psych drugs beginning in 1987. Went through two too-fast Paxil withdrawals in the past. Ended up in ER both times. I successfully got off Wellbutrin, and (occasional only) Seroquel, Concerta, and Klonopin over six months. Current supplements: multivitamin, probiotic, D3, magnesium, CBD. Current drugs: Ranitidine 300 mg. for acid reflux, Paxil (tapering off).

Paxil Taper History, 2018/2019

Jan.1: 60 mg. May 1: 55 mg. May 13: 50 mg. June 3: 47.5 mg. June 14: 45 mg. June 21: 42.5 mg. July 5: 40 mg. Switched to figuring by weight. 40 mg. = .704 July 22: .686. July 29: .669. August 5: .652. August 12: .635. September 2: 30 mg. October 2: 25 mg. November 2: 22 mg. December 1: 20 mg. January 6: 18 mg. Now using a digital scale and an emery board to taper. January 16: I decided to go back on the drugs after a year of tapering. I’m more depressed than ever, and do not believe it’s withdrawal. Thank you, everyone, for your support, advice, and kindness. Centime.

Hi David182,

Those reoccurring symptoms are awful, especially after you've had a few good days.  For me they were scary because I kept thinking oh no the entire thing is starting up again. The flu-like symptoms stink big time.

I was just reading Centime's post as well. I see they are suffering with the same symptoms.

David, thanks for asking. I am doing fairly well on my journey. My goal is to be a success story.

Just keep hanging in.  You too Centime.

As much as we wish we could stop these meds asap, I’m glad you found a taper that works for you. Also, these symptoms are downright hellacious sometimes. There is a little bit of comfort being able to pinpoint the cause to withdrawal / CNS instability as appossed to being completely bewildered.

I don’t know that anything has tested my patience like this journey has.

On a somewhat light note, I actually recently bought a new gaming system. Since I’ve been physically limited lately and I do read daily (some brain useage), I figured gaming might be a decent way to distract while trying to stabilize (which might mean years of use if and when I go completely off this med).

@RachelSusan

I’m glad your journey is going fairly well : )

i have no doubt you will be that success story.

Again, my biggest concern is I’ve had brain fog for years before Zoloft and I’m trying to figure out why Zoloft helps me think so much clearer. I’ve been researching but haven’t found too much yet.

I’m my research, the neurotransmitter theory for ADHD is low dopamine / high serotonin. If that theory is correct, Zoloft should make ADHD worse. My sister and (pretty sure) my father have ADD. I’ve never been diagnosed and the quizzes I take online seem to show moderate possibility for my having it.

Ive also read depression can cause cognitive issues as well. Idk, still searching for answers.

Went for a slow walk last night on the treadmill to try and help clear the brain fog.

My mind was clearer today. Moody though, kind of a roller coaster with some anxiety and then calming down and feeling all is alright.

Tingling in arms and around mouth, almost icy feeling at times. Maybe anxiety also? Idk. Maybe a bit more hungry this evening. Weak. Tired and kind of sleepy by time late afternoon/evening comes, been happening for the last while (week?)

(update)

walking slowly on treadmill seems to be helping.

Hi Dave,

I’m so glad you found a good strategy walking on your treadmill. We all need to find the different things that will help us individually. What one person finds beneficial another person finds stressful.

Keep on finding those things and distractions that help with withdrawals. It’s a real creative process. I want to do some more painting, my canvas is sitting there and I have the acrylics. All I need is to start now. I’m really in the zone when I start painting. I need to get an easel though, I’ve just been painting on the floor and last time I painted I think the floor got a fair amount of paint on it too.😀 My clothes ended up pretty colours too.

We need distractions that get us in the zone, where the time flies by before we know it because we have been so immersed in what we are doing.

I just looked in your signature. You’re doing good holding. The holds eventually stabilise us again when our system has gone haywire. Sometimes slower than we like, but we do get there.

Sending hugs🤗

Hi @Carmie

thank you for saying hey! It’s good to know you have something you can really zone into. What a blessing that is. : )

Oh nice! Do you like painting in a certain style or particular things  (people, landscapes, abstract)? I’m an art enthusiast. My gift in is in music, though; I can barely draw a stick figure, lol 😆

Playing guitar is my favorite zone. I’ll get back to drums as well once my CNS has healed enough.

Thsnk you for that encouragement! I’m going to hold until I’m feeling pretty much back to normal.

My emotions have definitely been heightened the past few days (especially yesterday). Probably lower serotonin from sudden stop in exercise but gentle walks are easing things (especially the anxiety).

Yes, slowly but surely we are healing.

How’s your journey been? Have you read Dr. Claire Weeks’ book yet?

Hi again Dave,

The last four paintings I did were more or less abstract but I did do a floral as well. I’m glad you have a zone too, it’s extremely important to get in the zone as much as you can in withdrawals. Playing guitar sounds amazing, I can’t play a musical instrument and I can’t sing, I sound like a dying walrus.😀

Love music though, I go to lots of concerts. Spotify is great too and I have heaps of CDs. I still love buying CDs. I love music videos too. Just been to a concert recently and was deciding whether to go to one tonight but decided to stay home instead. Listening to music is another thing that has helped me through withdrawals, though I notice some people on this site have noise sensitivity.

My journey hasn’t been too bad the last little while, thanks for asking. I’ve been holding so I can have a bit of a life and do fun things with friends. I’m going to start tapering again at the end of August after a holiday with friends.

Yes, I’ve read some of Claire Weeke’s book and I’ve listened to some YouTube videos of hers too. What in particular do you think has helped you with what she’s mentioned? I’m always happy to learn about other people’s experiences.

Yes, keep holding until you stabilise. Good on you. I read some stories where people are all over the place with their meds, no wonder their bodies struggle to stabilise.

Take care xx

The power of music is nothing short of amazing. Energize, chill out, sleep...I love it.  Movies have been really helpful in stabilizing as well.

I’m glad you’ve been going to concerts. I’m about due for another myself but I’ve been a bit more of a homebody than normal with my new symptoms.

i hear ya, sometimes we just need a break and social time can be very healing in itself.

A couple things that stand out to me/stuck with me from Dr. Week’s book:

It’s not necessary to obsess over the cause of a symptom. While we don’t want to make any symptom worse, worrying about a random one certainly won’t help.

Also so the main idea of ‘face it, accept it, float through it, allow time to pass’

I’m really trying to implement that into my life. It can be difficult for sure but practice makes perfect. One day at a time. : )

Do any particular aspects of the book stand out to you?

Hi Dave,

Yes music certainly is amazing. It can really transport you, great for withdrawals. I don’t have any concerts now until the end of next month, going to see Celine Dion. My music tastes go from one end of the spectrum way to the other end. The last concerts was Mental As Anything, an 80’s band. The one before that was Imagine Dragons, and now Celine Dion.

I liked the same points you liked in the Claire Weekes book, not to stress too much about the symptoms as they really are temporary. They won’t do us lasting harm, we just have to ride them out. Stressing about them doesn’t make them lessen, it can actually make them worse.

The more we stress the more adrenaline we release and the more the more it affects our CNS.

It’s not easy to ride out symptoms in a major wave but we have no other choice so trying to just float through them is the best way to go, knowing they’re not permanent.

Yes, it certainly is one day at a time Dave.

Sending hugs🤗

Been having stomach issues this week.

Pain, acid /heartburn, excess gas but difficulty passing it.

Taking Prilosec and mylanta as needed. (Asked doctor and she told me its most likely gastritis & to follow the above routine)

i noticed a warning on the Prilosec package warning against use of one has low magnesium level. I’ve been taking magnesium baths and my magnesium supplements in trying to offset what my be a lowering of magnesium levels from the Prilosec.

Nothing in my routine had changed in the weeks leading up to my stomach issues (at least nothing I can think off).

Trying to stay positive. Anxiety has been tolerable but a bit more prevalent, especially upon waking, as is common on this site.

Aches, pains, fluish feeling, tired. At least there’s one positive, I have been sleeping very deeply lately.

One day at a time. Never give up.

Stomach is better but the side effect of the Prilosec are just awful. (Dizziness, lightheaded, ache and pains, sinus issues, muscle cramps, feeling of ice in my forearms occasionally, increased anxiety, overall malaise, etc)

it it makes sense I’m more prone to wide effects now my CNS is sensitive. Just a fair warning to anyone else, becareful with PPI meds.

I have only been on it six days but am stopping. Acid is lower in my stomach and if it comes back, I’ll find a different way to handle it. Mylanta helps plenty.

Hey Rachel Susan, how have you been?

I’m hitting a wave myself. Wondering if you could offer some insights.

Symptoms really bad this morning and not very good the rest of today.

I get waves of feeling faint, dizzy, nauseous, hot, those hard to describe feelings of ice in my veins (mostly arms) and numbness in hands/forearms, feet, mouth, tired...

I feel strongly about these being related to taking Prilosec for 6 days. I’m reading up on it and trying to figure out what it may have lowered (calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc)

took a couple of naps today as I’m off work for the 4th of July. Had some muscle jerks and a feel like i’m falling once or twice.

not sure what to do. I’ll take Dramamine to get through the next couple days of work.

Hi David182,

I have been on Prilosec myself and have had the same symptoms.  The symptoms stink. I really hate the freezing veins. I believe the Prilosec changes the way we metabolize the Zoloft. I compare the symptoms to what happens when I make a cut that is too big. There really wasn't anything I could do but ride it out.  I'm so sorry, I wish I had a better answer for you. I want there there to be something I can suggest that would fix it, but just don't have anything.

I know you are not tapering the Prilosec, but I am putting a link in here just in case you want to read up on it a little more.  I didn't really have time to look through it to see if it offers any of that information you need but if you have the time you may to check it out.

Hang in there David.  I think with time it should settle down.  In the mean time feel free to rage at life.  I think all of us on this site deserve to be ticked off about what has happened to us.

Oh wow, thank you very much. I had no idea something as (seemingly) innocent as Prilosec could cause such dramatic effects.

While I hate these side effects, it makes me feel a little bit better about tapering someday; to the extent of “well, this really sucks but I can do it.”

Very informative, thank you again!

Hello, David. What kind of magnesium are you taking, at what times of day?

Are the gut problems related to any particular types of foods? Dairy and spicy foods are common culprits.

Hi Altostrata,

I take 250mg magnesium tablet with almond milk once in the morning and once at night. Spring valley brand. Magnesium oxide according to the bottle.

the only dairy I have is yogurt and 1 cup of cottage cheese but I cut out the cottage cheese a week or two ago. I used to put just a bit of cayenne pepper on my afternoon sandwich. Had done so for months with no problem.

i used to take my Zoloft and other sumplments (in my signature/are the same) on an empty stomach. I stopped doing that also about a week or two ago. Now I eat first.

i would just have acidy / heartburn feeling and occasional sharp pains in stomach after eating. Doctor said likely gastritis (the sharp pain). Idk.

Also dealing with the dizziness from talking issue ever since my last wave started.

Thank you for asking/your time. I much appreciate it.

Magnesium oxide is not a very absorbable type of magnesium. See http://survivingantidepressants.org/topic/15483-magnesium-natures-calcium-channel-blocker/

Also see about fish oil http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/36-king-of-supplements-omega-3-fatty-acids-fish-oil/

All "gastritis" means is "gut pain." Your symptoms sound like they're related to something you're eating. You might keep a food diary to see if you can tell what's causing the problem.

Thank you for that info. I can’t put into words just how much of a God-send this site & everyone on it has been. I just bought some magnesium citrate; 100mg was the lowest amount they had. Haven’t yet taken it (just walked out of the store)

Slept better last night but but still dealing with the dizziness/light-headedness and talking seems to exasperate my symptoms, I’ve had the talking issue before but gosh is it weird. My brain isn’t very clear but I took a week off of work so I’m looking forward to taking it easy and recovering (even though I had to cancel my original travel plans due to this wave).

You're welcome. Just a guess: If you sit a lot, you might have diminished lung capacity. Talking interferes with breathing. You might try deep meditative breathing to get more oxygen into your system, plus it's calming.

Took 100mg of magnesium citrate and wow, I can hardly believe how “unplugged” and relaxed I feel. It’s more potent than I thought it would be.

@DaveB

thank you, I don’t typically take vacations so I think this should do me some good.

Slept deeply last night. The magnesium citrate seems to help a lot.

Still getting those ice-in-veins sensations as well as lightheadedness, tired, heart palpitations, etc...

Frustrating but but did knock out an easy going half hour walk. Good for health and mind.

One day day at a time. This too shall pass.

Making some progress. Anxiety is lessened. Dealing with sinus and dizziness issues (but not lightheaded like before). Icy veins and heart palpitations seem to be gone.

The fatigue is pretty strong at times. Wore out and physically weak at times. (Unlike my previous entry)

I’ve noticed feeling similarly the next day after a long epsome salt bath (occasionally happened in the past). I’m wondering if maybe my body is getting used to a higher level of magnesium (using the mag citrate 100mg morning and night—100mg being about 25% daily value).

Been sleeping pretty well at night.

Talking with a someone close to me tonight and remembered how the spring/summer of 2016 I felt run down and had horrible allergies. Just didn’t feel right. I chalked it up to allergies even though I haven’t had them since I could remember (supposedly had them in my childhood).

In February of 2016 I had one of my parathyroids removed (benign growth). It was causing me excessive calcium levels for a long time (barely over the normal range but still high). I remember having what felt like hormonal changes after the surgery (about a week after, emotional, frustrated and angry for no apparent reason). It was short lived but definitely noticable.

I’m starting to wonder if there is a connection with all the hormonal & biological aspects of fixing my calcium levels and how my body deals with Zoloft afterward. I took my medication regularly, so I don’t think it was that. I didn’t have my first bad crash until spring of 2017 but there were occasions before where I just didn’t feel right and couldn’t explain it.

I recall reading about people doing fine on an antidepressant for a few years and then begin to have side effect(s) that were not previously present.

Just throwing out some ideas. Not sure what to make of all of this.

I also was taking GNC vegetarian protein powder during that period (2016) which had all sorts of ingredients. May have been causing weird interactions with Zoloft or just weird effects in general.

thanks :)

@tyof I responded in your Intro topic. I believe you are suffering an adverse effect of Zoloft.

hi there! No worries, any info I can give to help, I’m grateful to do so.

So far, stomach seems to be better taking Zoloft with food. I don’t believe I ever had pain immediately after taking the pill. I’m going through a wave right now so I have a few odd things going on, some of which are stomach related but the pain I spoke of in a previous post seems to be gone.

It looks like altostrata hooked you up with some info. 👍🏻
