Orangecat: Introduction to my taper story!

I've been in therapy and on SSRI's for ten years. Put on the SSRI's initially for an eating disorder and social anxiety. Depression is my bag, although I've gotten much better at working with through talk therapy and lifestyle changes. Now on Zooloft and at 50mg, where I've been for a while. Still seeing a great doc who is supportive of my need to try to get off this med. I've tried tapering before twice the ill advised way (25 mg every two or three weeks) and it was a big fail. Now see from this forum that that's way too fast for many people. Why do docs not seem to know anything about this?? Especially in helping our women who want to get pregnant, which would be me. Anyway I've done the calendar and looks like my 10% taper which I began June 8 or 9 will take me well into the winter. I was planning on trying for a baby in the fall; oh well. I just want to get this over with. Anorgasmia has been a disaster for me for the last ten years on top of all the other effects of the meds on a person's sense of self reliance. I also feel that when I'm on a higher dose I have more difficult time with procrastinating and artist's block, but my doc is skeptical and thinks that's more in my head. I'm definitely an anxious person so she could be right, but still not entirely convinced. It's scary learning how to do the liquid taper from a website and then inform my doc about it. Wish things were different. Went to a meet up group on getting off of meds and it was full of anti med extremists, who I sympathize with but can't entirely join. I know people who should have been somehow treated, perhaps with meds and certainly with therapy, and weren't, who caused terrible damage to themselves and others before dying from their own ailments.

Medicine History:

Currently tapering from 50mg Zoloft. Ten years of SSRI's including Celexa, Prozac and Zoloft, as well as a stretch with Wellbutrin added to the Zoloft. When I started on Zoloft (4 years ago?) I was on 100 but was able to taper down to 50 via 25 mg increments slowly around 2013. Have used light therapy and fish oil intermittently since around 2013. Have tried unsuccessfully to get off the meds since then in what I know now to be too large a taper (for example, jumped from 25 to 12.5 and that did not work). Motivated to do this slowly because that's the only way it will happen.

Hi Altostrata, thanks. I'll be seeing my doc on Friday to get liquid medication which I think will be essential. She recommended I start this taper by alternating 37.5mg and 50mg daily and two weeks into it I am intermittantly feeling flu-eu, fatigued, and now little shocks in the legs. I stayed in bed a lot of this pm. Texted doc to ask her to prepare for liquid med prescription in Friday as this is too rough and she advised me to start taking the same dose daily instead of alternating. I reeeeally don't want to go back to 50mg after two weeks of this. Any advice on what to do til Friday?

Consistency in dosage is very important. Alternating days is very unstabilizing and will lead to bad withdrawal symptoms. Reducing more than 10% at a time can also create a situation equivalent to a cold turkey. A liquid is ideal for exact, gradual reductions. Reduce by 10 % each time-that is 10% of each new dosage-not 10% of initial dosage all the way through tapering. Wait after each drop a good long while until you feel stable enough for the next drop-this can be anywhere from 1 month to, well, as long as it takes-you should wait at least a month, but other than that don't go by the calendar but by how you feel. And don't drop the first time you feel good-give withdrawal symptoms a lot of time to surface before proceeding. Trying to hurry the process always leads to a lot of unnecessary suffering for long periods of time (often years). The symptoms you are feeling are because you are going to fast or because of the alternating which is like playing Ping-Pong with your nervous system. Many who dropped too fast or went cold turkey are still suffering years later-many times because they had no one to tell them how to do it the right way. You, luckily, have a choice to do things the right way, and so to avoid huge amounts of suffering.

Sept 12th 1992-began taking Imipramine (50mgs) for panic attacks.

Stopped Imipramine after 4 months (cold turkey).

7 months later experienced "mysterious" bad flu-like symptoms, although, without upper respiratory problems or fever. Because of this and a day of panic attacks, was put on Prozac (20mgs?) for 2 months and then, when that didn't work-was put back on  Imipramine,  plus Xanax 1 mg (4Xdaily)-October 1993.

March 1999-switched from Imipramine (50mgs) to Celexa.

2008-switched to Pristiq for 3 months, then back to Effexor XR (after bad reaction to the Pristiq).

Sept 1st 2010-Switched from Effexor XR (75mgs) to Effexor Generic (solid form) in preparation for taper.

Nov 15th 2010-Began tapering from 75mgs Effexor Generic.

January 13th 2014-.06mgs

April 17th 2014-      .03mgs

May 11th 2014-       .02mgs

Ended taper October 31st 2014

Oct 4th 2015-11 months post taper and completely back to normal!

Stick with 37.5mg for now. Never, ever alternate or skip doses to taper.

Thanks so much for your replies... So nice to know people are out there!! I was able to get my doc to call in liquid Zoloft so I'll try that at 45 mg a day. Never taken liquid before, hope it's not too gross tasting.

Don't go too fast I did per doctors orders and paid the price. I'm still not sure about the 10% rule (I'm still new here) but that would be the safest way to go. Much better than going too fast. I cross tapered from 100 mg Zoloft to Lexapro in two weeks, again per doctors orders. Cross tapering to another seretogenic drug is different than discontinuing though.

Mike

As requested. In the last 3 years to the best of my recollection I first dropped the max dose of Lamictal. Yes I just stopped it was doing absolutely nothing. Then I dropped Lexapro, that was even easier I had been on and off that a dozen times before. There were at least 2 odd off label attempts at anxiety that I won’t be able to remember. Then there was sweet/evil Seroquel. That was the last to go it’s been around 16 months.

Lithium, Prozac, Paxil, Wellbutrin, Effexor, Celexa, Lamictal, Lexapro, Luvox, Viibryd, Brintellix, Pristiq, Zoloft, Seroquel, Zyprexa, Geodon, Abilify, Latuda, Ritalin, Adderall, Valium, Clonazepam, Alprazolam, Propanalol, Spravato

Hi there,

Feeling a bit conjested and tired but overall way better today. Took 45 mg via liquid last night and will hold there for a few weeks. No, I have no intention of going too quickly! Already tried that and it was a fail. Wish I had tried the liquid medicine 10% taper long ago. I'll be waiting til it's over before I try I get pregnant, and I'm not getting any younger.

Piping in again- not too sure how to navigate all the forums here and since I use my phone to go on this site, it's also tough to do that. So I will continue on this thread.

Have been feeling tons better physically since starting liquid Zoloft at 45 mg a day. I've had a lot on my plate at home and at work as well, and it's got me feeling depleted. Have been very avoidant of my art studio for all sorts of reasons. Today I'm feeling like I want to stay home all day and tune out with TV and Internet. Not a very rejuvenating day but it soothes me for a bit. Took a shower and am trying to get out of he house and do more of the errands I have to get done. Maybe will get a fiddle lead fig for my house.

I'm wondering if this is just who I am or if it's withdrawal or just the anxiety and depression I feel intermittently, which I feel still when I'm on meds depending on what's going on in my life. I've been getting my hopes up that tapering and quitting will help with the avoidance perhaps and make it clearer what my motivations are each day. I can easily get caught up in negative thoughts. Glad to have this forum. Off to get out of the house soon I hope.

Well, yesterday was pretty great and maybe I pushed it too hard, running errands. Today I felt major morning dread and now avoiding leaving the house by surfing the web. Maybe it's the cortisol increase I am reading about. That makes a lot of sense to me. Woke up this morning very early all panicked about various things. It's hard for me to leave the house if my husband leaves before me on a day like today. But I did have much better days prior to this, and after my last low energy/dread day (see above). I get so frustrated that all this is the effect of just going down what to me seems a piddly 5 mg. wonder how long it will take for me to get much lower. The goal has been to be off of this for pregnancy. But I don't want to be feeling this way while pregnant either. So frustrating to dwell on that. But I will try no to let it get too much hold on me.

Thanks Altostrata. It's become a definite pattern for the past two days, and I think I experienced it last week later on in the week as well- what you describe as cortisol levels rising in the am. On these days I wake up then the light starts up outside, very anxious. This morning I was prepared for it and did deep breathing though my nose and out my mouth, and it helped me get back to sleep. But in the mornings when I am up I am still very anxious and avoiding interactions with people as well as irritable or sad sometimes. My way of responding is to curl up in bed or on the couch, even after I've been out once already. Seems to wear off around two pm which is a relief. I hope this doesn't last too long.

Making your bedroom very dark with blackout curtains, etc. plus wearing a sleep mask can reduce the trigger of early-morning light.

Also, did we talk about fish oil and magnesium supplements? See

Taking mag at night can reduce the alerting.

Thanks for the tips! I have been taking fish oil in and off for a year or so and it definitely helps with my mood and energy levels! I take Barleans extra potent liquid stuff and it's really yummy (key lime is my recommendation). I've been not great about doing this religiously though. But I would like to try magnesium too. And a sleeping mask. Good tips!

Thanks again. The magnesium does seem to have helped big time. Took about 50 mg last night and this morning I slept much better and feel calmer too. I'm also trying to stay off of my phone more which can't hurt for sleeping better. Really feels like there's a light at the end of the tunnel today!

Have the curtains already, although they could be more lightfast. A mask I do t yet have. But I had absolutely no early wake up this morning that I can remember. I feel clear headed and actually have energy! Great to have a break. Took 50 mg magnesium again last night so I'm betting it's a good way to ease the challenge of these mornings for me.

Thanks for checking in Altostrata. I'm wondering when you know if it's time to lower dose again? I'm also considering going down incrementally over many days rather than jumping down 10% at once. I want to wait long enough to make sure I am feeling okay, but of course I am impatient too. I know everyone's different, but are there particular things to look for before moving down in dosage again? Thanks so much for being here for everyone.

You'll want to taper when you feel stable. We suggest reductions at intervals of about a month. If you get symptoms, that's a sign you're tapering by too great an amount or too often.

Instead of decreasing by 10%, you might want to try 5% decreases every 2 weeks.

Had a weekend of total lack of motivation! My husband was gone and I didn't leave the apartment much at all. Just feeling down. Slept much better but staying up late watching TV can't have been good for my system. Felt stable though as far as physical symptoms go. I went down ever so little in my dose two days ago- from 45 to 44, kind of as an experiment, and had a terrible cortisol wake up this morning, even though I've been taking 100 mg magnesium at night. Got back to sleep okay though. Time for a sleep mask for sure. My husband is concerned about me being so down all the time and I'm dreading having to go back to work at a busy time. Haven't been to my art studio in months for reasons unrelated to the medicine taper, but this isn't helping get me back there. So that's where I am today.

Decreasing by 1mg at a time, at least until you reach 10mg, is a perfectly valid way to taper.

If you are getting symptoms from a reduction of 1mg, you might want to reduce by .5mg, but more frequently, could be every week -- you'll have to experiment.

Thanks again Altostrata. Continuing to use this as my journal since I'm not writing down a log. Today much better, a small morning wake up and got lots of sleep last night. Feel clear headed this morning, more than I have in a looong time! I think my mood yesterday was more from a lonely weekend and poor sleep than it was from the dose drop, so I am going to try to drop another mg, probably tonight. Working my way to dropping around 5%, since I like the idea of about 5% every two weeks.

Yesterday was pretty good. Had coffee in the morning and felt a real low around 3 pm, maybe because of that. Trying to keep eating healthy. Maybe should consider giving up my morning cup of coffee to keep moods more stable. Slept very well last night and woke up very clear headed. Still taking 44 mg with fish oil and 100 mg magnesium at night. Flipping through Anatomy of an Epidemic and so disheartened. Does the brain adjust to being off of ssri's long term? One day, not too bad wave on 2/8. 2/15 down to 20 mg from 24. A week later, two restless mornings and one morning of brain fog. 3/2 from 20 to 16 mg! Wish me luck.

Took 42.6 mg last night, along with fish oil and 100 mg magnesium as usual, no noticeable difference today and I slept very well last night.

Down to 40 mg as of last night! Have been slowly tapering. Still taking 100 mg magnesium a night and fish oil. No noticeable side effects for a week plus!

Still at 40 mg and feeling no real side effects. Traveling so have missed my fish oil for the past three days, but still taking magnesium 100 mg nightly. And all this despite a stressful family to deal with! Btw, my fam consists of what can be fairly accurately described as an Aspie dad and a NPD mom (undiagnosed), currently with them and my sister, who is very needy and critical as well (probably what you'd call the "golden child"- shoutout to the scapegoats!). Very proud of how I've handled the weekend.

Have been at 39 for about three days or so. Back on fish oil, as always am taking 100 my magnesium, feeling much more energetic than earlier in this process and wary of overdoing things. Trying to keep balance in my days. Wondering how long to wait before I go down much more. It's good not to feel any symptoms right now but I might still try to get down to 37 or so, slowly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I was at 39 or a bit below/38 for a while. Then I noticed the lines on my cvs dropper were starting to fade out at the top. I'll get a new one, asap. But for a while I was just filling to the lines I could still see. I know that sounds crazy but I guess it was an arbitrary way to reduce. So I filled to 8 and 3 bars for both drops about a week ago, and then two or three days ago I just filled to 8 for both drops- I think I was thinking it was around 36 but just realized this am that's around 32/33. I've been getting mild cortisol mornings and some moodiness, rumination, also the sniffles, really mild. I've also been taking walks in the am, having no major anxiety so far since this cut- definitely nothing like what I was feeling earlier in this process. So I will HOLD here and go no further for four weeks or so. I remember, as others have written here, about 8 days in to a cut feeling really crummy for about 3 or 5 days. I'll keep a lookout for that. Fortunately, so far, I'm feeling pretty good. If I have to reinstate I'll be okay doing that. Didn't mean to have my iffy math and avoiding trip to the pharmacy influence the process to this extent but I'll see what happens for now.

Uh, nope. As I lie here with a dull headache and stuffy sinuses, fatigued at 11 am... Nope! Time to get a new dropper and not mess around with the good thing I've got going on so far in my withdrawal. I want to go back up to 37...
