marie123: tapering trazodone

Maybe the withdrawal won't be as bad as when I first came off because I was at a lower dose for almost 3 months.

When I first jumped off Trazodone I did not feel that bad for 1 1/2 months. Then I got sick with what I and my doc thought was stomach flu/bacterial infection. This went on for 6 weeks. The first four weeks was more intense, but at least after that I could walk around and drive a little, but I still nauseous all the time. I remember I had a day or two when it let up. I went back on Trazodone because the nausea didn't stop and reinstatement would allow me to feel better then taper off.

I wonder if I stopped the Trazodone would I go back to acute or somewhere farther along since I am on a very small dose now? Any advice on that?  If I stop I think I'll rapid taper in a week or should I just stop?

Thanks everyone for listening.

Marie

Hi Marie,

Are you sicker (or just as sick) now than when you were completely off trazodone?

  • 2011 Stopped ambien and crossed over to valium 17.5 mg. (updosing 2.5 mg. to cover ambien C/T )
  • tapered valium w/ long holds to 12.74 mg. from a high of approximately 20-30 mg/day
  • 2015-present tapered trileptal aggressively for a year; now intermittently; interacts w/ other drugs
  • currently 2024 still on 96 mg. trileptal and 4 mg. remeron
  •  Currently on benzo hold as I have to cross-over from brand-name valium to generic diazepam.
  • Current dose of diazepam is 8.8 and valium is 5.7.  I had to up-dose the total valium/diazepam from 12.74 to 14.5 where I have stayed since June 2023.  I am crossing over to generic at a somewhat tolerable rate of .3mg/month after about 2 months of trial/error w/ updosing.  I am not currently tapering; will continue to cross over.

Hi Grace. When I was off trazodone I felt weak and nauseous (not vomiting) all the time. This was for 6 weeks with a slight improvement at 4 weeks. The reinstatement cleared up most of that type of nauseau and I'm not that weak anymore. I am however, getting anxiety, an akathsia spell, restless leg, dizziness, head pressure, jittery, and a kind of poisoned feeling that has been increasing. The nausea when I was off Trazodone felt like typical nausea like when you have the flu, virus, etc.

Basically I am feeling worse than when I first reinstated. I don't think my brain is accepting the Trazodone. I reinstated too late and I've become sensitized to it.  I've made the decision to come off.

Thanks for stopping by grace.

Marie,

YOU are the best person to make that decision for yourself. Day one of healing from trazodone.

Maybe we can be remeron tapering buddies when the time comes...but we both have healing to do before that.

Best wishes,

Grace

Marie, you might search the forum to see others' experience with trazodone.  We generally recommend continuing to taper until at or below 1 mg.

Hi Marie,

I wanted to check up on you and see how things are going. I finally jumped off amitryptiline 2 weeks ago. I had tapered down to .250 mg. but was having a bad spell with sleep and finally decided to chuck it. I think it was the right decision to make and really feel fine now. My only withdrawal symptom right now is bruxism (tooth grinding).

It sounds like you are thinking of a jump also. I think you would probably be okay, or perhaps you could try going to .5 mg and see how that feels. I'm sure if you jumped you would not feel near as bad as after the first jump, but you may feel something--even .25 mg. had an effect on me.

Best wishes however you decide to proceed!

Sarah

1975--first signs of depression

1981--started on imipramine (Tofranil) for IBS and depression

1983-1986--severe depression, rotated through several drugs, on MAOI for one year, eventually back to tricyclics

1986-1994--chronic low grade depression, on tricyclics

1994-96--severe depression, rotated through several drugs inc. Prozax, Effexor, etc..

1996-2013--chronic low grade depression, SAD, on amitryptiline usual dose 12.5-25mg

flurazepam (Dalmane) as needed for insomnia

2013--developed temazepam (Restoril) dependance for 2 months, tapered off over 1 month

started bio-identical progesterone 5 mg., depression has lifted completely to this day

March 2016--forced to c/t both amitryptiline and flurazepam, zolpidem not helpful

reinstated small dose (.5 mg) amitryptiline due to stomach issues and tapering w/titration

June 19th--jumped from amitryptiline--drug free!

Congrats Sarah!!!

I know so well the hard work it took you to get there. Oh yes how wonderful it must be to be med free.

I'll get there, I'm working on it. I'll post more about it later. I'm curious what effect have you felt after the small jump. Ami is very similar to Traz.

I have some positive news thankfully--I accidentally stabilized. I know it sounds crazy but here is what happened. After 3 months of reinstating it just wasn't working. I tried a lower dose, updosing, etc. and still remained sick in withdrawal. I then decided to rapidly taper off the 2 mg Trazodone within a month.

I started by taking one tenth of a mg less for a few days then dropping another tenth of an mg and so on. I was nauseous a lot, flu like symptoms, etc. I was doing a lot of reading about w/d and read a post on another site (BB). A buddy was having a lot of sickness in withdrawal and stopped using her BRITA water filter and that cleared it up. I read that and thought what the hell I'll try it. There have been other reports of sickness with BRITA. By then I was down to 1.3 mg Traz and stopped the BRITA. The nausea stopped and lo and behold I stabilized, sticking to the dose of 1.3 mg Traz. I feel well most of the time and have some AM mild anxiety or slight nausea in the AM. Afternoons and nights I feel pretty good. I drink tap water, stopped coffee and switched to decaf. I'm not sure if the decaf is setting me off, I'll have to see. I will now hold for a few months to further stabilize and feel even better before I start a slow taper off these powerful tiny bits of Trazodone.

Today I am going to be brave and get my wisdom tooth pulled. I put it off a year, but it is starting to bother me more so I'll just grin and bear it. Wish me luck.

That is really great news Marie.  Boy, do I wish i would accidentally stabilize!  I use a reverse osmosis water system and dry-cut so I guess there is nothing to try there.  I am trying to stabilize and seeming to get worse so I am in a quandry right now.  I had a few good weeks and then WHAM!

Anyway, this doesn't speak very well for BRITA does it?  That's why we put in a reverse osmosis system when we renovated 3 years ago.  I couldn't breathe from the chlorine in the city water when I showered.  Being on these drugs has all sorts of hidden costs because of the hyper-sensitivities...my husband and I could own a luxury vacation home with all the money we spend trying to keep me alive!

Anyway, keep on keepin' on!  Sometimes this browsing we do on these sites helps us stumble across a hidden variable.  Thanks for sharing.

Hi Marie  It's great to hear that you've stabilized, I hope things keep improving.  Interesting to read about the BRITA pitcher. I did a quick google and the results were shocking. It's possibly something we need to pay more attention to here. Thanks for bringing it up.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Hi Brass. Thanks for stopping by my thread. The BRITA carbon filter emits silver particles from what I've read. Also the plastic pitcher can leach bad stuff into the water too. Literally the next day I felt a lot better, and I am not going to retest it by drinking BRITA water. I don't think it was a coincidence that since that day I stopped I stabilized.

I got my wisdom tooth pulled and was a little scared of the reaction of the Novocaine. I usually just get jittery with it, and was afraid I would get hit worse but didn't thankfully. The procedure went well and I'm just a little sore.

I'll stay at this dose a long while and maybe I'll do the famous brassmonkey slide rule. I see you are so close Brass. I wish you the very best.

Glad you got through the tooth ordeal Marie. I go through dental procedures w/o anything because I get short of breath from novacaine. I don't know if I could abide getting a tooth pulled though.

Can I ask what the famous brassmonkey slide rule is?

I avoid plastic whenever possible, especially w/ food and drink.

I think its tapering by 2.5% a week, for 4 weeks, and then wait another 2 weeks before another cut. I believe that's it. Maybe Brass can elaborate a little more on this.

I know we are all much more sensitive when we have other meds in our systems. I have a friend who doesn't have dental insurance and she gets her teeth pulled without Novocaine. Talk about being brave!

Hi Marie--  I'm so glad the wisdom tooth came out okay, you'll feel better for having it done.  When I was young I had a number of fillings without the Novocaine and really don't recommend it.

You've got the Brassmonkey Slide Method spot on.  That's all there is to it. If 10% is too big of a drop you can easily do 1.25% a week for 4 weeks and the a 2 week hold for a total drop of 5%.  It's possible to do almost any decrease that way, as long as you can measure the doses. Using liquid you could probably do a 1% slide by reducing one or two drops each week. (kiddie slide, lol)

Once you get good and stable and are ready to start your taper we can work out weights and all together to get you off to a good start.

HI Marie and Fresh,

This confuses the heck out of me always so I ran it by my husband because I thought Marie's thinking was right.

You're right Fresh.  100 mg. has to weigh more than .604 mg. and it does.  It is a gram scale.   So 100 mg. pills weighs .604 grams.  It's easy to confuse the dosage and the weight but they are not the same.  So 1 mg. trazadone weighs .006 grams as Marie  stated.  It is a gram scale but we are calculating mg. for dosage.  I don't swear by this but my husband was a chemistry teacher.  If he is wrong, LET ME KNOW, as he is weighing all my meds!!!

Hope this helps and is right.   Pretty sure it is.

Your right Grace.  .604 grams can be referred to as 604mg.  It's all in the decimal point.

Thanks for reassuring me, brassmonkey. Whew! These conversions get confusing.

Marie, my husband said that is such a small piece to weigh. Using the weight that comes w/ the scale (counter/weight?) can help make it more accurate. You probably already know this as you were right with your weights.

The traz 100 mg pill weighs 600 mg. Some weigh a little more some less. So 1 mg Traz weighs .006 on my scale which is 1 mg Traz. The 1.3 Traz that I take now weighs .008 on my scale.  It's a very tiny piece indeed, but powerful as it brought me out of withdrawal.

Yes, I do use the weight for more accuracy.

When I start to drop if I use the scale I can only go from .008 (scale weight) which is 1.3 mg Traz, to .007 (scale weight).

This is over a 10% drop and continues to be bigger %'s if I go down .007, .006, etc. on my scale.

I guess I should start to use water titration when I resume the taper. I am not completely sold on the idea because Traz is not really soluable (I'd have to shake it up as a suspension) and it's my first time with titration.

I have a nice long hold to give me time to figure out how to proceed.

Getting off Traz I'm hell bent on, so It will happen at some point.

Yeah, I shudder to think about those doses that are too small to taper properly w/ a scale. I tried liquid tapering once and it was a disaster, but then I didn't give myself time to adjust. Quickly switched to a scale. You will get off trazadone. I have no doubt.

Hi Grace. Thanks for asking. I'm doing pretty good. How are you doing these days Grace? My digestive system is working right and I'm no longer nauseous or weak. I really like that I am much more awake early in the day because of being practically off Trazodone. I picked Traz to taper before Remeron because I hated the way it made me feel (tired and spacy for most of the day).

I'm experiencing a little bit of insomnia for a few days, nothing terrible though. It might be a late Ambien wave or something to do with the wisdom tooth removal (novocaine, ibrupopen, etc.) Then again it could be because I'm doing a lot more now that I was feeling better, going to the gym, cleaning up the house, etc.(exercise intolerance).  Sometimes I'm not falling asleep quickly or waking early, but I am getting a decent amount of hours.  I think it will level out soon.

If not, I do my own version of sleep restriction therapy. I will go to bed a half hour later or more even if I'm really tired, and get up early as soon as my eyes open and leave the bed. I've done this before and it helped get my sleep into a better rhythm.

I'll pick up the taper in Sept. or Oct. By then I should be feeling even better and ready to take it on.

I think it makes sense that you have some perhaps rebound insomnia as my understanding is that trazadone is prescribed primarily for sleep. I took it once. 300 mg. "sure to knock me out"...didn't sleep all night. Was sicker than a dog the next day and never took it again.

Sleep restriction is a great thing to regulate your sleep. I have never had the discipline to do it. If I can sleep, I sleep. It's so hard to deny myself of it when I get so little and no quality to speak of.

Do you have a lot of vivid dreams? I have for a very long time and I chalk it up to

Grace

  • amitriptyline from 1980-2002,
  • intermittent  use of benzos over 2 decades prior to 2002
  • 2002-2010 Klonopin 1-2 mg., ambien 10--20, mg, remeron 4 mg. and  trileptal 300 mg

Well because I was feeling a bit better I overdid things. I went to the gym a couple of times and did a lot of cleaning/organizing in the house. I started feeling bad pain in my leg and buttock area on left side  The doc dx'd me with sciatica so I am just taking it easy and taking ibuprofen twice a day. Well at least it take my mind off of tapering.

The good news is I can now take ibuprofen without any bad effect. When I was in the thick of withdrawal it used to make my sleep worse. Another good thing is I found a way to go back to sleep when I wake up to early. I'm getting a good amount of sleep.  I read about it on another site and It has worked 2 nights in a row. I keep a small cracker on my night table and eat it when I wake up too early. I believe it has something to do with blood sugar.

I am hoping the sciatica will resolve soon. I've had a rough year.

Good luck to all of us.

Gentle stretching and a heating pad on the lower back always has helped mine.  Even though it hurts in the thighs the pain originates in the lower back.

Well I guess I was in a pretty good window for two weeks. Today I feel kind of lousy with pins and needles in my hands and feel and some chemical anxiety. Went to the grocery store and felt a bit panicky when I entered. My legs feel very heavy. I hate that the most. This is the gift that keeps on giving. Funny thing is I don't know if it's still some Ambien withdrawal or from Trazodone withdrawal. I guess it was bound to happen-the window ending. First it was the wisdom tooth pulled and then the sciatica in my left leg. I have been taking ibuprofen daily for a week and that could've done it to. Or it could be from the physical therapy? There are triggers for waves so I've learned.

The good news is the PT helped and loosened up my tight calf and lower back at least. The sciatica is starting to calm down too.

On a brighter note, my new handbag came in the mail today. I've been wanting this bag for forever. It's very lightweight so it will be much better on my back than my 10 ton Kors bag. It's the Longchamp Le Pliage bag. I just can't figure out why it has an extra snap on the back of the bag. Does anybody know why?

The heavy legs feeling dissipated by dinner time which is a very good thing. The pins and needles died down too. I have been having a lot of fatigue lately and just realized it's because I keep waking up a lot at night. Boy am I stupid sometimes. Of course you would be tired if you woke up a lot at night. The pain in my calf is lessened. I try not to blame withdrawal for all of my symptoms, but I wouldn't be surprised if the sciatica is from withdrawal. After all I have fell vibrations in my legs while withdrawing from Trazodone. Maybe it woke up my sciatic nerve.

Be well folks.

Hello everyone. This is something I am confused about. I do not know when the proper time would be to start tapering again. I think I am stabilized with my reinstatement as I had a pretty good two week window. Now I am in a wave of sorts, a bit of insomnia, anxiety etc. I feel good today besides being tired from early wakening.

If I am in a windows and waves pattern now, how do I know when it would be okay to start my taper?

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Marie,

You start the taper when you feel ready to start the taper.

To be honest with you, there is really not any good time to start. It's all about you and what you feel ready for.

When you feel stable and brave enough. That's the indicator.

I'm not an expert, but I'd hold the dose for another 2 weeks to see how you feel, however.

Peace & love,

Ryella

Hi Ryalla. Thanks for stopping by my thread. Yes I am going to hold for at least another month. I was hoping to be completely stabilized after reinstatement, but I can see this isn't the case. The wave was only one morning and sleep was disturbed so I guess I should be thankful for that. It also wasn't as intense as the last time I felt withdrawal from Trazodone. I think it maybe was caused by magnesium which I recently re-started. I have since stopped the mag, so I am hoping things will improve again. I know it's important to start when I feel mentally strong too, so I need some more time.

Be well,

Marie

Be well,

Marie

Hi Marie,

Yes, sometimes life throws curveballs at us. But you are strong enough to do this.

The magnesium worsened your symptoms you think?

Definitely, yes - feeling strong physically and mentally is essential.

It was suggested when I was thinking of reinstatement that I should wait a month or two. That's what I did, I stabilized completely in like a week. Then I waited a month from there and started. But I would not start tapering until you feel stable enough to do so. What Ryella said is right, so I would follow that advice. Everyone is different just take your time.

Paxil 20-30mgs since 2004.

Three previous withdrawal attempts 2008,2012 and 2015 all cold turkey.

Reinstated 10mg February 20th 2016

3/20/16-9mg 4/5/16-8mg 5/5/16-7mg 5/25/16-6mg 6/25/16-5mg 8/7/16-updose to 6mg 9/7/16 5.5mg 10/10/16-5mg 11/10/16-4.5mg

One thing that helps me is to see your withdrawal process as your own personal journey. Do not internalize someone else's withdrawal as your own.

Another consideration for your next drop is outside stressors.  Many of us held off over the Christmas period because we felt it best to wait until life was less stressful.

Also it seems that holding longer may be more beneficial than not holding long enough.  I can recall one member posting that if you are not sure whether to drop, hold for a bit longer.

I hear you Ryella as I've been thrown plenty of curveballs in my life. I've gotten through them and I'll get through this one. It's tough for sure. I'm not positive about the magnesium. I used to be able to take it every night. Sometimes things turn on you in active withdrawal.  It could be that or ibuprofen or just random withdrawal.

Hi Vigor. That's so good that it only took one week to stabilize. I took 3 months to stabilize! Well it was probably because I waited 3 months to reinstate.

Hi Chessiecat. I find that tapering in the fall/winter better for me with a break at Christmas time for sure. I'll start in Sept./Oct. to get more stable and take a vacation to visit family. I'll be flying from the east coast all the way to the west coast and slightly nervous as I recently stabilized. That makes sense hold until you're sure.

Be well everyone and thanks for stopping by.

Marie
