marie123: tapering trazodone

Recommended Posts

Yes downtowngirl I've got some itching from tapering the Trazodone. It's not too bad and I guess I am more focused on the other more prominent s/e's from tapering.

I'm glad that you are able to not focus on it....I wonder if trazadone has antihistamine properties in it so that is why the withdrawal of it can cause itching?

Yes it does. It's like a strong antihistamine.

Ahhh ha!  Now it makes sense!  You have done well with your tapering.  I wish way back in my previous attempts leading up to last summer I had known about the 10% method....I have tried reinstating but it never worked for me....I hope you are able to get completely off and don't have any bad symptoms.

Still not out of this wave. Yes the uti and the antibiotics put me in a wave. Never heard back from doc re the cultures, but I just started my cycle and it's a bad one. Now before meds my cycles were heavy and I felt awful, but boy oh boy was it ever bad last night. I had the most horrible cramps and nausea. You see I'm also perimenopausal so I skip a cycle here or there. Two months ago was my last cycle, so this month's was really building up. Ladies I think you know what I mean. I am also getting a lot of back pain. I took an ibruprofen and that was a bad idea. It made me more nauseous. Should have taken a tylenol. Ladies have it harder in withdrawal with these darn cycles. I find them much more intense when withdrawing.

On a more positive note I should get some terrific windows after going through a month and a half of all this nonsense. Once I hit some windows I'll go down again.

I'm still in a wave from the antibiotics. It's been 3 weeks since my last dose of keflex. I have leg pain in the AM along with nausea that lessens by the afternoon. Yesterday I was in a window all day that lasted until the evening. Got out and did some things which was nice. I notice that the weather plays into my symptoms. There is a storm front coming in and my symptoms are worse.

I just ordered some magnesium oil spray to see if that helps with the muscles. I used to be able to drink magnesium citrate but it now revs me up.

Just checked my notes, it is now 17 days off of keflex, not 21 days. The doctor finally called and told me all of the cultures came back negative so no more meds for me yay. Anyone get a wave from a/b's that can tell me how long it lasted? Thank you.

Pretty good day. A little AM stomach upset and AM achy feet that is all. I tried magnesium oil spray with aloe last night. I added a drop of lavender essential oil to it. I sprayed a small amount on my ankles/tops of feet. All I know is that I slept 7 1/2 hours straight. I am glad that I can use magnesium again. I used to use natural calm mag but it started to turn on me when tapering traz by giving me a bit of anxiety. I'd love to try fish oil again some time soon. It started to give me issues too.

I am going to 1 mg traz tonight. It's been over 2 months since my last cut. I am going to try as hard as I can to do this last milligram slowly.

So far so good. The cut went well with a little restless sleep. Down to 1 mg Traz with is .006 mg pill weight. My feet were achy again in the AM and tummy was a bit upset. I decided to get out and do things instead of ruminating. I went to the gym and felt very good. I went out furniture shopping that I've been putting off for some time now. I found what I like and will wait until Black Friday to get a swinging deal. The symptoms in the AM were not that bad and they were gone by noon. I notice that I am able to complete more tasks and some even that require more than just basic thoughts--real planning.

I've learned that the longer I hold the better I feel. I've heard that numerous times on the board but I wasn't so sure it would work with traz. It has so I will try to give it at least 6 weeks in between cuts. This time when I'm off I'm never going back. Nasty traz.

HI marie...

I am happy to read that you are doing good. You are slowly taking Trazodone out of the picture of a Beautiful Life.... to come. Anyway as i am tapering Remeron just wanted to ask whether you re still taking the Remeron of you have dropped that already???

All the best

No I haven't started yet. There was some temptation to taper both at once but I thought I might run into trouble and not know which one was causing what. It bugs me to wait as I loathe these meds. I have been following others here on the board who have been tapering rem. When I start I'm going to go slow and extremely slow on the last few milligrams. I've gotten burned before. How's your taper going so far? Are you using liquid or weighing out your dose?

HI marie123

My taper has been somehow difficult but i might say stable as in Withdrawal. I started with 15 MG and am currently on 7.2. My situational factors are not good at the moment and the apathy induced at lower levels have caused a lot of worries to me. I feel depressed and very difficult to continue working normally these days. Anyway working situation for me is complicated as i am not in good terms with my manager and right now this has affected my performance. I have been staring at the monitor for some days in a row not wanting to do things when i am not evaluated for what i have done. I am not sure whether this is the best thing to do but my will and self confidence are at very low levels nowadays. It might be the taper one reason but the other for sure is psychological. I went a bit fast with the taper from 15MG starting to lower at 4th of July.

Currently i am on 7.2MG at my taper. I have hard tablets of 30Mg so i mix half of the tablet 15Mg with 15Ml of water and then take with syringe 7.2Ml. So far it is working. My sleep has been not bad around 7-8 hours with 2-4 interruptions to go to the toilet. A bit of anxiety in the morning for which i do a short half an hour meditation using hypnosis videos from youtube. My afternoons and nights are quite OK with problems only on wd days. I can say that you might try to use the same method as mine as in this way it is easier to control the amounts you take and you can plan even smaller drops than 10% if you do not tolerate them well. So fare i have always been inclined to make bigger than 10% drops... :-) of course not more than 11-12... :-)

I wish you good luck with the trazodone. You re almost done with that. after almost two years you are starting to see the finish line... :-)

Good Luck and keep in touch.

Thanks Ali and Santino for stopping by. I was feeling pretty good for a while with minimal symptoms. Recently I got over a nasty UTI but was still having residual burning. Culture tests came back negative. I made a cut after being in a nice window for a few days. I am down to 1 mg, but the vaginal burning is a bit worse and starting to get to me.

Has anyone experienced this with withdrawal and what did you do to help it? I've been trying baking soda sitz baths and organic coconut butter. I guess some people get in other places like arms and legs, but this sure takes the cake. I'll try to get fragrance free detergent tomorrow. Maybe it's related to meno idk.

I am seeing my gyn this week. I'll tell him about it and ask him to test for other things like lichen and other wonderful things. Btw, the reason for the appt. is that he wants to do another endobiopsy. You see I'm still getting cycles and thinks we should check just to be safe. I had one last year and it wasn't too bad. I've heard it described as a root canal on the ******.

God help us all.

Congrats Marie on being almost done with Traz.  I'm still trying to stabilize on this beast - only 3 hrs sleep now.

Did you ever gain weight on the remeron?  I am trying desperately not to add another med, but I am fearing I'm at the end of my rope with insomnia.

Best wishes.

Hi survivor. Thanks for stopping by. Trazodone is a beast for sure. I thought it was a little innocuous drug that I could taper off with not too much trouble. Yea right. I also found it hard to stabilize on traz once the apple cart was upset.  I gained a little bit of weight - maybe 10 lbs., lost some so maybe 5 to 10 pounds with rem. You do get an appetite with rem for sure. I understand your need to sleep. That's what got me here. You know your insomnia will improve if you just hold for a while. It might take a few months though. I don't know if you're working and must get enough sleep to function. That can be an issue, but if you're home I would just wait it out and not change any doses.

Rem has been known to be tough to taper. There's not so much info on traz. I guess it's because it's an older AD and docs don't prescribe it as much. We both know that traz is hard to taper. Try to stick to one dose for a while on the traz. That will help a lot. Good luck survivor. Your sleep will improve. Hang in there.

Well silly me. I forget about the timing of my doses with the setting of the clocks back. No wonder I am getting worse s/e's. I will try to adjust tonight with taking meds 1/2 hour earlier. I'm also nursing a cold which wakes me up with coughing at about 3 am and not really able to go back and get some restful sleep.

Once my meds are adjusted to the time change and the cold is gone I should feel a lot better. I'm not sure if I'm up for the gyn visit as it's not pleasant and a bit stressful. Maybe I'll reschedule it for next week. In the meantime I think today I'll get some fragrance free detergent and some Aveeno diaper rash cream. After all of this is over I want to post a picture of all the junk I've purchased to help with w/d.

I think getting the timing on my doses right helped. I slept without a wakeup--well I woke up too early because the gosh darn recycling truck is coming again every Tues. morning at 5 AM. Wakes me up every time. Called them last year many times. At the end I really gave it to them and they switched to a later hour. Now they're back at it again and the supervisor is avoiding my calls. I figured I try giving up orange juice for a few weeks thinking it's too acidic and causing some of the burning. I didn't have much today and I think it helped some. Still feel like I have to pee all the time. Bladder issues are from traz and ambien so need to concentrate on making the bladder better. This is my only symptom that I am having. Maybe I'll try a half a teaspoon of D'mannose daily and see if that helps. I've washed my clothes in fragrance free detergent and purchased some castille soap today. I'm still nursing a cold.

Lately I noticed my gait is even more improved after my small cut of traz. It's amazing that I felt the cut so much but I think it's calming down a bit. Voted today. They had a ballot that was a legal size sheet of paper with all the candidates and parties on it. You only had to fill in the dots of your choices and put the ballot in the reader.

I'm slathering organic coconut oil all over my body to combat itchiness which is either from w/d or hormones. It could be both. The burning has calmed "down there" because I started my cycle. I am curious to see if it goes for good once my cycle is over. I really hope so. Reschedule gyn appt. for endobiopsy for after Thanksgiving.

Slept really well last night, gait is much better, and everything is just a little bit clearer with this tiny cut. Withdrawal has required so much patience that I am amazed that I have it in me.

Marie,

What does your MD or ob/gyn think about the burning? I take it that that is why you are having that biopsy, or am I confused??

Sounds like you are onto a good thing with the coconut oil. I have heard it works wonders for so many ailments....

Hi JC,

My gyn doc followed up after I had a uti that I went to see my regular doc for. Regular doc prescribed antibiotics (2 rounds) for a cultured uti. After the uti was finished I kept having uti symptoms so I went to gyn. I told gyn and she gave me culture tests for uti, yeast, and bacterial vaginosis. They came back negative. The endobiopsy was scheduled because I am 57 and still getting periods (just to be safe) and has nothing to do with the ongoing urinary symptoms. I had one last year too and will continue to get them yearly as long as I still menstruate. I guess I am an old gal to be still menstruating.

If I still have the urinary issues when I go in for the endo, I will ask the gyn to do more testing. I know for lichen the doc would need to do a biopsy and I will ask for strep b testing too.  I would not be surprised if nothing comes up and it is all withdrawal. I have on and off urinary frequency, pressure, burning and irritation down there. This all started after a bad UTI (over 100,000 bacteria). The gyn that I am seeing for the endo I really like and I feel is much more knowledgeable, experienced, and thorough that the the other gyn I saw.

The itching has calmed down with the organic coconut oil. I also have a skin condition that comes and goes called tinea versicolor that I have a special shampoo for that calms itching.

I had a nice sleep last night. Woke up once but was able to go back to sleep, nice. I went to the gym today and had a nice light workout. I never push myself because I don't think I'm ready for it. I remember when I first started taking these meds I was on all three at the time. Ambien pooped out after 2 weeks and I was in tolerance withdrawal. I started tapering it after a couple months. By then I was also on trazodone and remeron. I was very spaced out and felt ill.

But I have always enjoyed working out so I thought I should just force myself and start. I only was able to do 5 minutes on the treadmill at the time. Now I do some weight bearing machines, 15 minutes on the bike and 15 on the treadmill. I usually go in the morning so I'm still a bit spacey from the remeron. After I got off the treadmill an old guy started hitting on me. It was funny because I didn't realize it until he was halfway through it. I just mumbled something and walked away lol. What he didn't realize is that I was on my way to Target to pick up some Desitin diaper cream for my burning bottom haha. I also picked up some vitamin E oil. I am now using vitamin E, organic coconut oil, and desitin to try and calm down things. I think it's helping. The itching is under control with the coc. oil.

I kind of think it's from traz withdrawal (or ambien), but will have the doc do some tests on my next visit. There's some tight pelvic muscles I need to stretch out. I'll do some daily that I found online. I also found out today that the bladder is actually a muscle. No wonder it's a problem with w/d contracting all of the muscles.

I'm in a wave of sorts. Yesterday felt okay went to the gym with a friend, but by evening I was not feeling well. I got a nasty migraine and felt nauseous so I just rested in bed that evening. A storm was coming and I definitely get affected by the weather. The storm did come this morning and I woke up feeling withdrawal sick and revved up. I felt like this all day. The super moon might have done something too. I watched a flock of blackbirds flying in and out of the yards. There was about a hundred of them and they seemed very confused, probably the moon. The cut has shown itself to me but I think if I wait long enough it will get better. That's what happened last cut. I won't cut again until at least January. Took a hot bath to try and relax tight muscles.

On a lighter note, I got my hair done today and it looks pretty.

I am doing much better. The burning stuff is gone along with the UTI wave/symptoms from the cut. I believe I had a reaction to the antibiotics along with a reaction to the Monistat. I think the Monistat burned me and it took a couple of months to heal. Ladies be careful with Monistat as I believe we are more sensitive in so many ways to due the meds. I'll never use it again. I'm doing a lot more stuff and feel a lot more positive. Little changes like reading the newspaper in the morning again. I stopped for a long time. Putting music on in the car which I haven't done for a while. Chores are getting done around the house. I even painted the guest room and started redecorating.

The third year is supposed to be the year that real healing is done after benzo (ambien). Also, I'll start tapering the traz 1 mg after the holidays. The last cut took one month to stabilize. I'll cut every 2 months as my brain likes that. I'll finish off traz in 2017 with fumes left. But I'll be done forever with it.

Yup I'm relieved. It's something that I will have to get done every year. As my doctor says "he doesn't expect anything, it's just to be safe." It's still anxiety producing though. I'm still getting a cycle at 57. In some ways I'm lucky as it protects me some from some aspects of aging like heart disease, osteoporosis, dementia, etc.

My sleep was great last night. I slept seven hours straight.

Great news Marie! I hope you continue to improve.

I have a question.  I added 2.5 mg remeron to my list :( and am having rapid heartbeat and body jerks.  I am worried about serotonin syndrome.  Did you ever feel such symptoms when you first started both drugs together?

Thanks very much!

Link to post
marie123

No, but I would not have noticed as ambien was probably making me sick at the time. Rapid heartbeat and body jerks are from trazodone w/d. I've gotten them and I can tell you they will go away/come back/go away and eventually go away for good. The rem added might have set off the traz. Just my opinion. Can you do without the rem at this point? You might be uncomfortable for a while but you'll have one less med to taper. I understand the need to sleep though, because I did the same thing. Now I have rem to taper next.

I'm no expert but I think that serotonin syndrome would be more severe. Good luck to you whatever you decide.
