marie123: tapering trazodone

Marie,

Thanks for the quick response!  I had temporarily reduced the rem to 1.5 and noticed that there was a reduction in the jerks and rapid heart rate, and these increased again after I updosed back to 2.5.  I have to balance the risk of ss with the wd from a rapid taper.  This Dec has seen a lot of ups and downs from multiple reductions/updoses/ additions.  My poor CNS.  Hoping to get some advice from a moderator soon.

Thanks again.

The best advice I can give you is to settle on one dose (for every med you take) and stay there for a few months. You'll start to see improvement the longer you stay there. Your brain will love you for it. It's a long process, but I have found out myself, for some this is the only way, but it does work.

I had a very nice window of one whole month. It was great and I got a lot accomplished. I knew I was due for a great window after about 3 months of bxxxxxxx w/d. Today a slight w/d wave not too bad. I slept well last night, but noticed at the gym today I was slightly dizzy for a moment or too. Also I have been experiencing excess saliva and a bit of metal mouth, which is a very weird symptom. I've had this before and it went away. I might be a bit dehydrated with not drinking a lot of water, so I am upping my water intake. All in all not bad at all.

I've been stabilizing on my last cut and trying to get through the holidays so I can restart my taper. Burning stuff is gone, just slightly itchy. The gyn doc advised me to use cortisone cream down there. Well the first time I tried it a week ago I got insomnia. I waited a week later and tried in again, just a fingertip of it. I not only got insomnia, but was dizzy all day. Today I'm better. I have a lot of sensitivities to meds these days. I hope they go away at some point. I have a bit of a cold and family staying with us so it's a bit of a challenge. I'll get through it and next year things should be a lot better w/d wise. Be well everyone.

This sounds pretty good, M. I hope it keeps up. You're  nearly there.

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

marie, I've had good results reducing itchiness with calendula cream. I got it at a homeopathic/natural pharmacy.  Another idea - aloe vera?

You asked in my intro about the SAD light I use.  I can never remember the full name of the device (with all the modern branding and unique model identifiers), so here's a link to a post I made earlier this year:  link.

Happy New Year everyone. I've been feeling really well and stable. Holding for 2 months on traz and 27 months off Ambien has done this. Yay for me. I'll hold for another month since family's here for a few more days. I also had an unexpected root canal yesterday and need a couple of cavities filled. After that I have a remodeling project that I will be mostly in charge of that includes moving the family out of the house for several days. I've been able to handle all of this because I am very stable. I'll cut at the end of the month when things are quiet again and start the w/d stuff again.

A great improvement I've noticed is that I can handle exercise more. I've starting testing myself by pushing myself at the gym. I used to get bad muscle aches the next day but not any more. Also my sleep doesn't get worse. I think I'll try to go for it even more. It's good for me. I feel so much better when I get a good workout.

Slowly coming off traz this year is the plan. 2017 will be a good year.

I'm still doing well w/d wise. Caught a cold and got a root canal done so I'm just trying to take it a bit easy. With the holidays ending there is still a lot of sweets left around the house. I've found myself eating chocolate every day. I'm not too concerned about the weight thing. I've noticed my mood is getting more and more improved. I wonder if it's all the chocolate.

I read this online:  Dark Chocolate and Serotonin Levels. Dark chocolate may increase serotonin levels not only due to the serotonin and L-tryptophan it contains, but also because it contains carbohydrates in the form of sugar, which can signal the body to produce more serotonin.

I think I'm getting loads of serotonin lol. I'd better watch my waistline. Holding until the end of the month.

I had an uptick in symptoms today. I was thinking about it and trying to figure out why. I started drinking orange juice again for a few days now. I previously stopped a few months ago because I thought it was revving me up. Today I noticed a more restless sleep, a down mood upon waking, and some fogginess and dizziness. I was at the gym today on the treadmill and was a little unsteady and a bit anxious.Too bad I really like orange juice.

Anyone else have an issue with OJ?  There is also a change in the weather from cold to warmer so that be part of it. I did have chicken with a little marsala, but not enough to cause anything I believe. Well for now no orange juice and see how it goes.

Feel like I had benzo flu this AM, but thankfully it lifted by the afternoon. It was pretty strong. It felt like the real flu but without the fever. I wonder if having the blood sugar spike from the OJ caused this wavy stuff. I know not to drink grapefruit juice with these meds, but I wonder if OJ has been studied the same way. Don't think it was the marsala because I've read the alcohol dissipates with cooking. Perhaps the tea tree oil I used on my foot? Hmmm. I hope this stays gone. Onward!

I can't pin down with certainty what's going on with me. Usually I would just think it's a wave, but other stuff it could be too. I've been feeling like I'm coming down with something. Now my hubby is home with a bad stomach virus and very ill. Hmmm maybe I'm fighting off this same virus. IDK it even could be that I'm nearing my cycle, a cycle that should not be happening since I'm 57. You see I'm entering meno too so I have the privilege of not knowing what the heck is happening. My sleep is lousy and that happens right before a cycle. Well if I don't start vomiting soon (I know tmi) at least I'll know it's not a virus haha. I very easily could have caused a wave by overdoing it completely in my nice long window or that nice shot of lidocaine in my mouth for the root canal. At least I always feel improvement after a wave and my baseline goes up. Time will tell.

Do you have an ongoing dental problem or is this a one - off  ?  I would address that first if it is an issue. There is a lot going on so it's hard to know what has caused the wave. Either way , I hope it resolves itself soon.

No Ali it's not a tooth problem. I needed a root canal and got it done about 2 weeks ago. I have to go in Monday to my regular dentist to put a crown on and get another cavity filled. The lidocaine was to numb me for the root canal. Just feeling a bit under the weather and not sure why. It will pass.

Yes Survivor, everything gets better eventually. You know both of us have gone off a benzo and we may still be dealing with some of that. Sometimes I forget about that because I get so wrapped up in traz w/d. So it could be both benzo and trazodone withdrawal we are dealing with. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Thank you JC.

I went to the dentist today for a filling and a cap for my root canal. It wasn't too bad. I asked for carbocaine instead of lidocaine. I did not get any jitters but it seemed to not to be as strong as the usual lidocaine that dentists use. I felt some sensations more during the dental work that I would not feel otherwise with lidocaine. It wears off much faster. It's about 45 minutes later and I'm hardly numb, so there's a tradeoff.

I feel pretty good otherwise with my window continuing.

Sleep was disturbed last night as I seemed to wake up every hour or so. It's probably from the dental work I had yesterday. The carbocaine or the anesthetic revved me up. If I'm going to get revved up like that anyways, I should have just had the lidocaine which numbed me better. Maybe it was because I needed two shots?  It's okay though because I get days where I sleep 7/8 hours with 1 or 2 brief wakeups.

Mood is good, found myself singing to the radio in the car. 27 months off Ambien, 1 mg of trazodone to go. Nice and stable for the descent off traz.

I reinstated after 3 months. Longer windows means you are improving Lama.  I'm not sure what you meant by Brutia water? I had a bad reaction to filtered water by BRITA.

The insomnia is gone after 2/3 days from the dental visit. I guess I got revved up from the carbocaine. I have to go back to the dentist in another week. This time I'll ask for regular lidocaine. I'm curious to see my reaction with a different numbing agent. At least with the lidocaine it will numb everything better than the carbocaine.

I'm feeling really good and will cut after my remodeling project is over, which will be the 1st of February. That will be a 3 month hold. I have confidence in the holding method now that if I feel withdrawal just wait it out. It goes away, it really does.

I'm definitely in a wave. It could be from a variety of things, stress, dental work, the carbocaine med, etc. Family was here for the holidays and then a remodeling project was going on. We left the house and stayed in a hotel. My luck the fire alarm goes off at 4:30 AM. We all quickly throw on some coats and stumble down the stairs to the lobby. The desk clerk says it was a false alarm. No one in charge. I hate to think if it was a real fire what would happen. I have my dog with me walking down the stairs and I start to lean to the right until I just sat down. You see the remeron was still in effect and I was loopy. Another reason to quit remeron. All in time.

I'm sleeping great now but I have morning cog fog combined with a bit of light-headedness and fatigue. Today was a rainy day and that also makes my symptoms worse. I think I'll avoid the dentist for a couple years and only get cleanings. I'm going to hold a bit longer before I start tapering again. I am 28 months off Ambien.

Yup it's a wave of withdrawal. I've noticed that it lifts in the early afternoon. This AM I had sensitivity to light, blurry vision, fatigue, etc. I feel pretty good this afternoon, dare I say a window. I expect this pattern will continue for a bit, basically morning w/d symptoms and feeling much better in the afternoon and evening. After you've been at this for a while you definitely notice patterns. I also expect my baseline to improve. Lately after every wave, I feel a nice, higher baseline.

Unfortunately I have a bad cold today that's knocking me for a loop. I had some hot wonton soup today that really helps when I have a cold. In a strange kind of way I like being sick from a cold better than regular old withdrawal. W/d gets old pretty fast. I can't wait to feel somewhat better so I can cut.

I feel definite improvementa from month-to-month but it's very slow. I have no doubt that I'm still experiencing Ambien w/d along with traz w/d.  I'll get there.

Well the bad cold kept getting worse and worse and now officially is a very bad virus, maybe the flu. It's respiratory with a little stomach stuff thrown in. I had a low grade fever for a day only, but still congested and extremely fatigued. My spouse had it first and lasted about 8 days. Mine is a bit more than that but is getting a bit better-just very slowly. I'm weazing a lot and my bladder is acting up a bit. I'm avoiding the doctor for now and hope I will continue to improve. Antibiotics throw me for a loop w/d wise.

I should have a great baseline after all of this.

Hello Marie,

I hope you are feeling much better.  I wanted to ask you about stabilizing on trazodone as I see you had been off it for a few months before reinstating.  Are you feeling any withdrawal sxs this far out after reinstatement?

I am asking because I reinstated seroquel after 3 months off, but am still having a hard time seeing a pattern of improvement.  I do get windows, but my twitching/jerking seem to be getting worse instead of better and it has been almost 3 months since I reinstated.  I am trying to determine if it's still wd or an adverse reaction to one of the drugs I take, but that is hard to figure out!

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

PAST

Gabapentin:  about 6 months in 2015, 300-900 mg, cold turkeyed Sept 2015 (at same time dc'd Klonopin)

Klonopin: June 2014- Sept 2015; 1mg tapered over 6 mths, dc'd at 0.25mg, withdrawal hellish (perhaps because of concurrent dc of gabapentin)

Yes I am although some could still be from ambien w/d. When I first reinstated I was much worse though. Gradually it got somewhat better. Although by holding 3 to 4 months now has made me feel better with longer windows and more of them. Now I'm getting over the flu but it has caused an uptick in symptoms (wave) but it's not terrible. What I want now is stability and I don't expect I will feel great when that happens, but good enough to restart my taper.

I would hold if I were you and see if you continue to get more windows and feel a bit better. I get some twitching from the trazodone once in a while or for you it could be just a side effect of seroquel. I've never taken seroquel, maybe ask someone on the board about their experience with seroquel?

I hope things improve for you soon.
