This is the conversation that I had with my psychiatrist:

Psychiatrist: how many mgs of abilify are you taking? Are you taking abilify 14mg?

Me: To cut abilify from 15mg to 14mg looks too much.

Psychiatrist: In theory cutting 1mg it is not.The worst thing that can happen is to have to up your dose again. There is no problem. Have in mind that you can take up to 30 mg of abilify. To take out 1mg of abilify is real minimum. THE ADJUSTMENTS ARE DONE FROM 5MG TO 5MG (30mg, 25mg, 20mg and so on). In your case we are doing like that(cutting 5mg each time). We are using abilify 1mg/1ml oral solution.

Psychiatrist: you are doing really well with this treatment. We have to count with your opinion. If something goes wrong, we can up your dose. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO TAKE THE LEAST AMOUNT OF TREATMENT BECAUSE EVERYTHING HAS SIDE EFFECTS.

Psychiatrist: HOW IS YOUR AKATHISIA? DO YOU HAVE A LOT OF NERVOUSNESS?

ME: a little

Psychiatrist: I am sure the biperiden helps. Biperiden is a good medicine but causes constipation.

I want you to taper abilify till you reach 10mgs and take out biperiden. You are going to reduce abilify 1 mg every 10 days.

ME: It is a Lot.

Psychiatrist: then try to reduce every 10 days abilify 1mg.

ME : I propose to reduce 1mg of abilify monthly.

Psychiatrist : I don't have no problem with you to taper off 1mg of abilify monthly. I WANT YOU TO BE SECURE WITH YOURSELF. I WANT YOU YO TAPER 1 MG MONTHLY. IN 4 MONTHS YOU ARE IN 1O MGS OF ABILIFY AND WE TAKE OUT BIPERIDEN.

I'm sorry your in the position of having to feel like to you need to conceal the truth of your dosages to the doctor, if He would be willing to help you come down off the Biperdin now if He knew you've been at or below 10mgs for this long. It's going to be very hard for your doctor to understand your true progress and symptoms, or why what is happening truly is if your presenting one version of reality other than where you really are in your journey.

If He thinks you were able to drop from 14 to 10 in 4 months, He's going to have a false notion of what your brain is or isn't able to tolerate. It also may be a problem for your legal case as your trying to present yourself as competent to make your own conditions but if the court interprets it as a sign you can't be trusted it will more issues later.  I agree with you that you should be at lower dosages. I just hope you can straighten all this deception out for your own good before it becomes problematic for you on either a medical or legal front.  I also want to see you happy with a doctor you feel you can trust and are on good terms with. Good luck to you, Friend.

@Colonial, I have another appointment with a different psychiatrist on Tuesday. Hopefully I can tell her that  I am at 9,6ml of abilify. They use(psychiatrist, Psychologist and ex users of the psychiatric system ) the open dialogue method used In Norway. You are with them and you talk about your anything you wish to talk. I don't know if they will prescribe me medication. I understand the danger to get caught in this game of lies and more lies.

First, Manny, I want to congratulate you on speaking up for your own plan. You did an excellent job.

It was probably hard for you, but you can see -- the psychiatrist changed his mind. The rest was frustrating, but still, you got what you wanted.

How does this psychiatrist plan to help you taper? Is he prescribing a liquid? Is he prescribing compounded capsules with smaller amount of Abilify?

This doctor sounds like a much better doctor for you. You might explain you are willing to stay on the minimal amount of drugs that are effective for you, but you've been taking too much for a long time and you have found you need to taper very gradually.

He gave me abilify 1ml/mg oral solution. The only problem I have is that I have to use 1 pill of  abilify 10 mg and 4,6ml of the oral solution.

I mix the abilify 10 mg discmelt pill with 10 ml of water and I shake it really well and I take out 5ml of the mix with water. Then I measure 4,6ml of the abilify 1ml/mg oral solution with the 10 ml syringe. 5ml water tritation + 4,6ml  abilify 1mg/1ml oral solution = 9,6ml of abilify.

I told these people what I am really taking and that I need to taper really slowly (10  percent monthly). I will contact them again. The psychiatrist offered herself to talk with my GP. I hope she can make me scripts. I spoke very honestly to them. I told them that I want to come off of psychiatric drugs. I mentioned Peter Breggin,Joanna Moncrieff and Peter Goztche. I told them my story with psychiatry how I was put on psychotropics because I was hypochondriac and later because an obsession I had with religion.

Am I tapering abilify properly? I am using abilify liquid and Abilify 10mg discmelt tablet. I mix 10 ml of water with the abilify 10mg discmelt tablet and take 5ml of it. With the abilify liquid I drink 4,6ml of it.

Hi Manny!

That link says: "ABILIFY 1 MG / ML. 150ML.".  So I assume your getting a total of 150 ml in the bottle.

That looks like 5 mg of the tablet plus 4.6 of the pharmacy liquid for a total of 9.6 mgs.

I looked at the link and it had a lot of the side effects listed that you've been having trouble with, so I think this is a good plan for you.

Hopefully you will see improvement soon.

How are you feeling over all?

I'm glad the new doctor is willing to speak with your GP.

Hello @COLONIAL. I am so so. Yes, I am using the abilify 1mg/1ml Oral solution 150 ml. I should have requested to give me 15ml of liquid daily, but it would be good for 10 days. My prescription says 5ml of abilify daily, so it is good for 30 days.

It is up to me to figure it out how to taper with what I have.  I get prescribed abilify 10mg twice a day. I hope the new psychiatrist will cooperate with me. I need to get a new appointment from her. The bad thing is that she is from Madrid, and only see her through Skype. My worse symptom is akathisia, I need to pace a lot. Other sxs are lower back pain and hips, restless legs in bed, very bad cognition, puffy hands when trying to sleep, shaky fingers.

It looks like you have been stable on the Abilify at 10 mgs for a good long time and only made your first drop on Sept 27th to 9.8?

And then dropped again on October 17th to 9.6?

That's about 5% a month so far.

Which is good to start, since you were tapering the Risperidone this year from 1.75 on January 8th down to 0.86 on August 28th.

Half in about 8 months, that was really great, Manny! 🙂

Hopefully the lower you go the better you will feel.

This might be due to weak, tired and/or tense muscles, possibly caused from you doing a lot of walking because of the akasithia.  I've been having issues with my muscles since injuring my back in mid-June (now better).  Because of the back injury (and I've also been doing a lot of sitting for the last 5 years) I have muscles which have compensated for other muscles.  I also started doing a lot of deep water hydrotherapy exercises thinking it was good for me but it made my gluteal (bottom) muscles tired.

Check out this YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p-YGhlRPhM

Knee and hip pain can be caused by tight quadriceps and/or hamstrings.  I used to have hip pain at night and found that quadricep stretches have helped with that.

I'm seeing a remedial/sports massage therapist now who works on the tight muscles and has given me stretches and exercises to do.

I think it would be a good idea for you to see a physical therapist or physiotherapist (not sure what they call them where you live) and get checked out.

REMINDER TO SELF:

I don't need the drug now, but my still brain does.

ADs:  25 years - 1 unknown, Prozac (caused muscle weakness), Zoloft/sertraline; citalopram (pooped out) CTed (very sick for 2.5 wks a few months after)

Pristiq:  50mg 2012, 100mg beg 2013 (mild Serotonin Toxicity)

Began tapering Oct 2015  Current from 17 Oct 2020:  Pristiq 0.56 mg (compounded + liquid)

Thank you for the encouragement @Colonial.What you are saying about the tapering dates is correct. I had a very rough taper with the abilify two years ago. I had to stop tapering at 10 mg because  I was having inner akathisia. I was pushing myself to go to my English classes even having inner aka. Now that I have restarted the abilify taper my aka is getting worse again. I should just stick with one pill and make the taper to the end. I will fight for my well being no matter what happens.

Thank you @ChessieCat.I made an appointment to see a physical therapist since  I have a lot of pain. I have to wait till next week. I won't be walking a lot. I hope I don't have arthrosis. I have a small escoliosis in my back.

Hello everyone,I am really concerned about myself. I really have serious cognitive problems. I want to speak and  I forget what I want to express. Makes me think I am retarded. It happens all the time for example when I have a conversation over Skype.I am doing my best with my taper but I can't speed it up. I TAKE 5 DRUGS. I am really angry. Can't watch TV or read. I know these symptoms come from the drugs.I have checked the drugs interaction checker. Just needed to Vent. I am not very smart but I am not dumb. Anyone has this as serious as me?

I'm only tapering one drug, Pristiq, and I'm on a very low dose now, 0.625mg started at 100mg, and I have times when I (can - correction) cannot find the words I want to use.

Lots of other members have mentioned that they have the same issue.

Hopefully as you reduce your drug load things will start to improve.

I get similar s*t Manny and I am on high dosages of two antipsychotics. I feel your pain. Hang in there. It's the drugs doing it. All the clinical data and guidance to doctors mention this, especially if you mess with dopamine you clearly lower concentration, iq, thought patters etc. I am smart with a couple of engineering degrees and I 've followed a couple of career paths with great success and I feel immensely dumb on these meds.

Feb 2015 Invega 9mg tapered to zero over 6 month, Levomepromazine 25mg for 3 months
Citalopram raised from 20mg to 80mg over 3 months, at 80mg for 1 year and 5 months
Venlaxafine raised from 150mg to 450mg over 3 months (after citalopram) maintained for 1 year and 2 months.     Two shots of haldol decanoas,
Alprazolam from 0.5 to 7(!) mg due to the immense stress of the ads. Down to 2.5mg discontinued abruptly with almost no tapering within a week and a half, against all guidelines first the citalopram then the effexor. October 2017

Occtober 2017 - Dec 2017 Moclobemide raised from 200mg to 800mg during a month and half discontinued with no tapering.

Jan 2017 Feb 2017Fluvoxamine and Venlaxafine 300mg and 450mg, abrupt start, no tapering in discontinuation. 30mg Mirtazapin at night.

Close to two months off antidepressants but on benzos. 6 months on 2.5mg alprazolam, Diazepam 5mg for 1.5 months. Currently on 600mg peronten, 400mg seroquel xr, Risperdal Consta 50mg.

Hi ChessieCat. I read your comments in your website how are you tapering Pristiq . How percentage are you tapering now? You are doing a very good job. Unfortunately we cannot rely on medical professionals. It is my experience.

I am very sorry Jay78.I have a degree in Networking Administration, but I can't work on that because I forgot mostly of what I have learned. I can't homologate my degree because it was issued by a Community College in the USA. I tried but it is very difficult.

Hi everyone. I have noticed that I have been gaining weight with the ability taper. I was in 100 kilos. Now,I am in close to 102 kilos. When to physical therapist because  I had hips ,back, glutes and leg pain. This is a never ending process of withdrawal symptoms. I have to be determined to keep tapering. My question is how you guys do with with pain and withdrawal sxs? I always go out and walk even more than  I should with aka,but I find myself more tired, just wanting to be in bed.Otherwise,I will be pacing all the time. While in bed I have contorsion in torso and legs movements. I think physical therapy helped me a lot. Did you guys who are in abilify wd gained more weight? Do you have a voracious appetite? Should I keep tapering at a high rate? Now,I am reducing 5 percent per month.

How do you feel after you reduce by 5%?

If you feel okay then you could try reducing by a bit more, perhaps 7.5% and see how that goes.  If that goes okay then you could increase it to 10%.

I think physical therapy helped me a lot.

My suggestion would be to continue seeing the physical therapist and get strengthening exercises.  This is what I am currently doing.  I have been sitting a lot over the last 5 years and haven't been very active.  I had a bulging disc in June (now better) but now I am having trouble with my muscles.  Of course this started before the injury but since the injury I now have some weak muscles and some tense muscles and because I did hydro every day for 1 month I got tired glute muscles so I had to cut back on how much I was doing and let them rest.

What happens when we have some weak/tired muscles is that we use other muscles, ie we compensate.  The muscles we use become stronger and/or tense and/or tired and the other muscles get weaker because we aren't using them.

Basically it means learning to use all of your muscles the right way and to build up strength.  Since the beginning of this week I have started working on my core strength with pilates exercises which the physiotherapist taught me.  I was very surprised that she told me to start walking faster than I was, and just for 10 minutes, every day.  I think it's because it makes me use my core muscles better.  And already I'm starting to notice the difference. She wants me to go to the pilates class she teaches so that I can learn more exercises to do at home.  She was going to teach them to me one to one, but I don't have health insurance cover so it is cheaper for me to go to a class.

Of course, please check with your therapist to find out what exercises are suitable to you.

This one is a really good one to start with.  You don't need a roller but I found it better with a roller.  Even just lying on the roller and keeping it still works the core muscles.

https://physioonaroll.com.au/exercises/basic-exercises/basic-abdominals-bent-knee-fall-out/

Another one is to lie on your back and point one leg in the air and draw circles with your toe, both clockwise and anticlockwise.

Other exercises are heel raises, squats, knees raises (lying down, with pelvic tilt), glute bridge (lying down, with pelvic tilt and squeezing a large round object with the knees which makes the glutes work better - I'm using a large tupperware container because a toilet roll or paper towel roll wasn't fat enough).

Stretches:  quadriceps, hamstrings (do not stretch leg completely, keep knee a bit bent).

You might find this video helpful in understanding how the gluteal muscles work and how everything is interrelated with the hip and knees.  This guy has some really good videos.  He is a teacher and creates these videos for his students.  I found it helpful in understanding why the physiotherapist is getting me to do what she is.  And I had started walking the way he shows in the video because my glute muscles were tired.
