I spoke with my psychiatrist today. He wants me to take more biperiden for the akathisia. He wants me to lower down the dose of abilify to 14mg. He doesn't want me to take below 12mg. I know biperiden causes cognitive problems. He said biperiden 4 mg extended release cannot be broken. How I am going to taper it? He told me that biperiden causes constipation and dry mouth. 

This is what he wants me to take:

Abilify 14mg - abilify 10 mg and Abilify 4ml

Risperdal 0, 86ml at night

Cymbalta 60 mg-1,0,0

Klonopin 0,25mg-0,0,1

Biperiden 4mg retard-0,0,1

Biperiden 2mg -1/2,1/2,0

+1 for this idea, I once brought my man with me to the psychiatrist and it had a positive impact. Think of someone who is really close to you and has a good overview of your situation (how stable you are, etc.).

Hi Altostrata. I told him I want to reduce slowly but he doesn't understand. I don't have anyone to take with me to the psychiatrist. I had a phone appointment yesterday. I feel rage, anger towards him. I am afraid I can end up in a psy ward if not compliant to his way of thinking. Eventhough he agreed to take me off of all psychotropic drugs with my GP, and he doesn't want to me to take off of abilify because I might relapse.

I don't have anyone with power authority to come with me. This psychiatrist is playing with me with respect to Psychiatric drugs. I am in danger with him. Either I speak up my mind with all what I know with respect to his tapers or I let him to do what he wants with me because of fear.

Manny, you need to speak calmly and frankly with him. You need to explain that you need to reduce more gradually.

 

If he won't help you taper Abilify, ask him to help you very gradually taper the other drugs, such as the Risperidal first. You may need compounded liquid preparations for some of them.

 

You should also point out the biperiden may be causing your symptoms.

 

We've reviewed this so many times, I don't know what else to suggest. You need to find a way to gradually go off your drugs.

I get it, Manny, I would totally feel angry if I were you. It's quite normal that a doctor doesn't offer you understanding - most of them are simply not trained to recognise withdrawal as a real issue.

 

From my experience the doctors are advising you to stay on drugs because they believe otherwise you'll get into a relapse, which might be dangerous for various reasons. They wish you best, but sometimes their best might not be your best. For instance your dose of different medications might be too high. In this case, they'll eventually agree that a lower dose or no medication might be better for you, but you need patience to prove to them that you won't get sick again. When you asked him to taper to e.g. 10 mg Abilify, what does he reply? Why exactly 12mg? I know that even 5 mg might be an efficient support dose for this, so why not 10 or 7.5?

Can you find a free lawyer or patient advocate? Even a neighbor who is sympathetic will do. In Spain, do not doctors have to listen to the wishes of their patients?

What pisses me of is that he agreed with my GP to taper me off of all drugs I take.Maybe because I mentioned I have akathisia he is afraid I could do something to harm myself. I told him I need to move from one place to another,his brilliant idea is to have me taking 6mg of biperiden when I am taking 4mg. I can't taper the abilify 4mg extended release. 

He usually is very collaborative reducing medication but making very stupid mistakes,making large reductions such as reduce klonopin from 1mg to 0,5mg, abilify 20mg to 15mg, Zyprexa in the case of my mom from 15mg to 7,5mg,and so on.

Only way is to lie him and taper on my own. Can  I speak why I was put on these drugs? Is it forgiven to talk about religion in the group? I was put on psy drugs because of my religious beliefs,and my family told them I had paranoid schizophrenia who was my supposedly diagnosis in the USA. I was more obsessed with heaven and hell than to hearing voices.I couldn't sleep that was true. I never heard voices that time. I was just afraid. I think psychotherapy would be a better option for me. I really believed that was I believed it was true. Now I know that was foolish for me to believe that.

Maybe because I discussed with him that I heard voices(I think they are antipsychotics induced),he does not want me to go off of all drugs,but he is a fool reducing psy drugs.

Maybe I need to pay a lawyer to respect my wishes to go off medication. It is very hard to have last wishes if you are a person who has a mental diagnosis.

Thank you Nocturna for being there. I don't know why he said 12mg. He said he doesn't worry about the risperidone because it is less dose and it is easily to wd but the abilify it very hard to come off. He wants me in abilify 14mg and biperiden in 4mgs extended release and 2mg normal. He wanted me in 8mg when he knows of the cognitive dysfunction. I already have constipation and dry mouth in less degrees. He is a drug dealer because he said don't worry increasing biperiden, side effects are constipation and dry mouth. He did not provide me a way to taper for the biperiden. His ways of tapering are foolish like 50  and 25 percent reductions. 

I have tapered on my own and I have not relapse, but I understand their side. I don't agree with my diagnosis with me (schizophrenia paranoid). I had OCD but not schizophrenia.

We've discussed your drug cocktail many times. This psychiatrist also agreed it it excessive. You experience adverse effects. Your doctor needs to consider your quality of life.

 

You are taking 5 drugs. If he insists Abilify is necessary, you have a choice of 4 other drugs to taper. Risperidone duplicates Abilify action. Your dose of Cymbalta is high and may be contributing to your adverse effects. You also need to discuss adverse effects of biperiden with him. I would save tapering Abilify and Klonopin for last.

 

We've been talking about this so long, I don't feel there's anything else I can add. If you want to minimize your drugs, you need to find a way to gradually lower the dosages of one at a time. If this doctor won't help, perhaps another will. If you want to titrate your drugs yourself, we have given you the tips for tapering topics over and over.

 

You need to make the decisions for yourself. I honestly don't think there's anything else I can say.

Hi Manny!

 

Sorry your having so much trouble with medication side effects and the doctor. Is there a chance you can find another doctor? I realize that might be hard right now with the lockdowns but I think the stress of the relationship can only be making the overall situation worse, especially that you have to be lying to him about what your actually taking. The anger and rage and lack of trust can't be helping and I wouldn't be surprised if He isn't picking up on that subliminally and it think that it could only be worse for your relationship in the long run if He finds out how long You've been lying to Him.  It may also be hard for Him to understand why your having the symptoms you are if He thinks your on one dose when your actually taking another. You've received a lot of great advice here on which drugs are the most likely culprit of the akathisia and which meds are repeats. I hope your able to find someone your more comfortable with, as I feel that is just as much your main complaint as the symptoms.

 

The good news is many people find they do not have to be completely off a med or cocktail to see improvements. Wishing you all the best as you move forward! 🙂

Hi everyone,just an update from me. I spoke with my psychiatrist. He wanted me to take more biperiden for the akathisia but I refused.I got an agreement with him to taper 10 percent per month with my abilify. In four months, he wants me to reach 10mg of abilify from 14mg tapering 1 mg each Month. I AM NOT IN 14MG OF ABILIFY. I AM AT ABILIFY 9,6MG. I will have to keep tapering at my own rate.

This is the conversation that I had with my psychiatrist:

Psychiatrist: how many mgs of abilify are you taking? Are you taking abilify 14mg?

Me: To cut abilify from 15mg to 14mg looks too much. 

Psychiatrist: In theory cutting 1mg it is not.The worst thing that can happen is to have to up your dose again.There is no problem. Have in mind that you can take up to 30 mg of abilify. To take out 1mg of abilify is real minimum. THE ADJUSTMENTS ARE DONE FROM 5MG TO 5MG (30mg, 25mg, 20mg and so on). In your case we are doing like that(cutting 5mg each time). We are using abilify 1mg/1ml oral solution.

Psychiatrist: you are doing really well with this treatment. We have to count with your opinion.If something goes wrong, we can up your dose. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO TAKE THE LEAST AMOUNT OF TREATMENT BECAUSE EVERYTHING HAS SIDE EFFECTS.

Psychiatrist: HOW IS YOUR AKATHISIA? DO YOU HAVE A LOT OF NERVOUSNESS?

I'm sorry your in the position of having to feel like to you need to conceal the truth of your dosages to the doctor, if He would be willing to help you come down off the Biperdin now if He knew you've been at or below 10mgs for this long. It's going to be very hard for your doctor to understand your true progress and symptoms, or why what is happening truly is if your presenting one version of reality other than where you really are in your journey.

 

If He thinks you were able to drop from 14 to 10 in 4 months, He's going to have a false notion of what your brain is or isn't able to tolerate. It also may be a problem for your legal case as your trying to present yourself as competent to make your own conditions but if the court interprets it as a sign you can't be trusted it will more issues later.  I agree with you that you should be at lower dosages. I just hope you can straighten all this deception out for your own good before it becomes problematic for you on either a medical or legal front.  I also want to see you happy with a doctor you feel you can trust and are on good terms with. @Colonial, I have another appointment with a different psychiatrist on Tuesday. Hopefully I can tell her that  I am at 9,6ml of abilify. They use(psychiatrist, Psychologist and ex users of the psychiatric system ) the open dialogue method used In Norway. You are with them and you talk about your anything you wish to talk. I don't know if they will prescribe me medication. I understand the danger to get caught in this game of lies and more lies.

It was probably hard for you, but you can see -- the psychiatrist changed his mind. The rest was frustrating, but still, you got what you wanted.

 

How does this psychiatrist plan to help you taper? Is he prescribing a liquid? Is he prescribing compounded capsules with smaller amount of Abilify?

This doctor sounds like a much better doctor for you. You might explain you are willing to stay on the minimal amount of drugs that are effective for you, but you've been taking too much for a long time and you have found you need to taper very gradually.

He gave me abilify 1ml/mg oral solution. The only problem I have is that I have to use 1 pill of  abilify 10 mg and 4,6ml of the oral solution. 

I mix the abilify 10 mg discmelt pill with 10 ml of water and I shake it really well and I take out 5ml of the mix with water. Then I measure 4,6ml of the abilify 1ml/mg oral solution with the 10 ml syringe. 5ml water tritation + 4,6ml  abilify 1mg/1ml oral solution = 9,6ml of abilify.

I told these people what I am really taking and that I need to taper really slowly (10  percent monthly). I will contact them again. The psychiatrist offered herself to talk with my GP. I hope she can make me scripts. I spoke very honestly to them. I told them that I want to come off of psychiatric drugs. I mentioned Peter Breggin,Joanna Moncrieff and Peter Goztche. I told them my story with psychiatry how I was put on psychotropics because I was hypochondriac and later because an obsession I had with religion.

Am I tapering abilify properly? I am using abilify liquid and Abilify 10mg discmelt tablet. I mix 10 ml of water with the abilify 10mg discmelt tablet and take 5ml of it. With the abilify liquid I drink 4,6ml of it.

That looks like 5 mg of the tablet plus 4.6 of the pharmacy liquid for a total of 9.6 mgs.

I looked at the link and it had a lot of the side effects listed that you've been having trouble with, so I think this is a good plan for you.

Hopefully you will see improvement soon.

Hello @COLONIAL. I am so so. Yes, I am using the abilify 1mg/1ml Oral solution 150 ml. I should have requested to give me 15ml of liquid daily, but it would be good for 10 days. My prescription says 5ml of abilify daily, so it is good for 30 days. 

It is up to me to figure it out how to taper with what I have.  I get prescribed abilify 10mg twice a day. I hope the new psychiatrist will cooperate with me. I need to get a new appointment from her. The bad thing is that she is from Madrid,and only see her through Skype. My worse symptom is akathisia, I need to pace a lot. Other sxs are lower back pain and hips, restless legs in bed, very bad cognition,puffy hands when trying to sleep,shaky fingers.

That's about 5% a month so far.

 

Which is good to start, since you were tapering the Risperidone this year from 1.75 on January 8th down to 0.86 on August 28th.

Half in about 8 months, that was really great, Manny! 🙂

Hopefully the lower you go the better you will feel.

This might be due to weak, tired and/or tense muscles, possibly caused from you doing a lot of walking because of the akasithia.  I've been having issues with my muscles since injuring my back in mid-June (now better).  Because of the back injury (and I've also been doing a lot of sitting for the last 5 years) I have muscles which have compensated for other muscles.  I also started doing a lot of deep water hydrotherapy exercises thinking it was good for me but it made my gluteal (bottom) muscles tired.

Knee and hip pain can be caused by tight quadriceps and/or hamstrings.  I used to have hip pain at night and found that quadricep stretches have helped with that.

 

I'm seeing a remedial/sports massage therapist now who works on the tight muscles and has given me stretches and exercises to do.

 

I think it would be a good idea for you to see a physical therapist or physiotherapist (not sure what they call them where you live) and get checked out.

Thank you for the encouragement @Colonial.What you are saying about the tapering dates is correct. I had a very rough taper with the abilify two years ago. I had to stop tapering at 10 mg because  I was having inner akathisia. I was pushing myself to go to my English classes even having inner aka. Now that I have restarted the abilify taper my aka is getting worse again. I should just stick with one pill and make the taper to the end. I will fight for my well being no matter what happens.

I'm seeing a remedial/sports massage therapist now who works on the tight muscles and has given me stretches and exercises to do.

 

I think it would be a good idea for you to see a physical therapist or physiotherapist (not sure what they call them where you live) and get checked out.

Thank you @ChessieCat.I made an appointment to see a physical therapist since  I have a lot of pain. I have to wait till next week. I won't be walking a lot. I hope I don't have arthrosis. I have a small escoliosis in my back.

Hello everyone,I am really concerned about myself. I really have serious cognitive problems. I want to speak and  I forget what I want to express. Makes me think I am retarded. It happens all the time for example when I have a conversation over Skype.I am doing my best with my taper but I can't speed it up. I TAKE 5 DRUGS. I am really angry. Can't watch TV or read. I know these symptoms come from the drugs.I have checked the drugs interaction checker. Just needed to Vent. I am not very smart but I am not dumb. Anyone has this as serious as me?

I'm only tapering one drug, Pristiq, and I'm on a very low dose now, 0.625mg started at 100mg, and I have times when I (can - correction) cannot find the words I want to use.

 

Lots of other members have mentioned that they have the same issue.
