Zoloft question

VitaminC81

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I was told to taper off zoloft for the course of a month by my doc from 50 mg. I couldn't deal with the withdrawals after 10 days of fully off. I reinstated 12.5 for 3 days and moved up to 25 for the past two. Having really bad side effects (insomnia, no appetite, anxiety) but starting to feel better. Is this normal for me to feel better this fast because I was only off for 10 days.

Zoloft 50 mg - 10/20 - 1/22

Zoloft 25 mg - 7/22 - 1/23

Zolft 25 mg - 2/23 - present

Welcome to SA, VitaminC81.

To give members the best information, we ask them to summarize their medication history in a signature -- drugs, doses, dates, and discontinuations & reinstatements, in the last 12-24 months particularly.  A list format is best.

Account Settings – Create or Edit a signature.

Did you have the insomnia, no appetite and anxiety before you tapered off the 50mg or only after the fast taper?  If only after the taper, they aren't side effects (which are caused by being on the drug)--they're withdrawal symptoms caused by going off the drug too quickly.

Yes, it's normal to feel better this fast after a reinstatement.  It can happen almost immediately or after a few days to a week.  Reinstatement is the only known way to reduce withdrawal.

About reinstating and stabilizing to reduce withdrawal symptoms. -- at least the first page of the topic

While you reinststated much more than we normally recommend, the fact that you're starting to feel better indicates that the reinstatement is working.  Are you feeling better for the last two days at 25mg or for the previous 3 days at 12.5mg?   I wouldn't reinstate any higher--you don't want to overwhelm your system, which has been sensitized by the rapid taper.  Depending on your answer to my question, I'd suggest you hold steady on the reinstated dose for several weeks, possibly longer, to let your system recover from your rapid taper.  At that point you can begin a taper to zero.

We recommend tapering no faster than 10% of your current dose every four weeks.

Why taper by 10% of my dosage?

The following link is specifically about tapering Zoloft, including how to get the nonstandard doses you'll need for a 10% taper.

Tips for tapering off sertraline (Zoloft)

We don't recommend a lot of supplements on SA, as many members report being sensitive to them due to our over-reactive nervous systems, but two supplements that we do recommend are magnesium (glyinate is a good form) and omega 3 (fish oil). Many people find these to be calming to the nervous system.

Magnesium, nature's calcium channel blocker

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil)

Add in one at a time and at a low dose in case you do experience problems.

This is your introduction topic -- the place for you to ask questions, record symptoms, share your progress, and connect with other members of the SA community.  I hope you’ll find the information in the SA forums helpful for your situation.  I'm sorry that you are in the position that you need the information, but I am glad that you found us.

I would not recommend that. There is no telling how you will react to the Effexor or to the switch from one drug to another, and there are many member stories here on failed antidepressant crossovers and great difficulties following the switch.   Effexor is one of the most difficult antidepressants to get off.  It's much better to taper the drug you're already on.

Still feel good physically it's just my anxiety that's killing me... Intrusive thoughts all day and hightened anxiety. Been on 25 for 5 days now. Hopefully it will be better soon. Ginger is really helping with nausea so I can at least eat a bit.

More sensitive gag reflex? I get this too at times, hadn't thought it was med related, but literally anything could be.

That's good! I'm glad you're able to get some food in, it helps so much with anxiety I've found. The days I don't eat much anxiety is through the roof!
