I think I’ve made an awful mistake. I did a too fast taper off of Citalopram in Jan/ Feb and have been having awful withdrawal symptoms for about a month now. I thought the symptoms would resolve themselves after a few weeks, but they haven’t and I fear that I may have now permanently damaged my brain.

I was prescribed 20mg paroxetine in 2001 for depression and anxiety. It worked really well. Life was wonderful and I felt fantastic for about a year. Then the Paroxetine lost it’s effectiveness. I took it for another year before deciding that it wasn’t doing anything and that I was cured so could just stop taking it. I relapsed six months later and was put on 20mg Citalopram in 2003.

Over the years I have made three attempts at withdrawing from Citalopram. I had very little help from my doctor who told me that I could just stop cold turkey and then go back on them if the depression/ anxiety returned, which it always did.

My last attempt to withdraw was in 2011. It was disastrous, I ended up a quivering wreck and was convinced I was going to die. Went back on citalopram and was told I would probably need to stay on SSRI’s for life. Stabilised after a couple of months, but didn’t feel quite right so was put on 10mg Ecitalopram.

Over the last few years I made some significant lifestyle changes; moved into a new house, started getting some regular exercise, improved diet, reduced alcohol consumption and quit smoking.

Nov 2014 - was switched back to citalopram 20mg. No explanation as to why, I went to collect the repeat prescription and it contained citalopram with a note saying this was a new course. Anyway, i took what I was given and assumed the doctor knew what he was doing.

15 Jan 2015 - Life seemed more positive and i once again felt the urge to quit the anti-depressants and be free of the side effects (agoraphobia, emotional numbness, twitching muscles, weight gain, sexual dysfunction, tiredness). I took 10mg for 2 weeks, then 5mg for two weeks and 2.5mg for a further two weeks, before jumping off.

Mar 2015 - I had two weeks of feeling really good. I had tons of energy, was getting out more, was starting to make plans for the future, my emotions were coming back, best of all, I was starting to feel like me again. I had a few brain zaps and headaches, but nothing that I couldn't cope with. I felt that this time things would be different and that I would finally be free of these drugs.

Then I crashed. I woke up very early one morning with a feeling of dread, terror and loneliness. Everything had changed overnight. I had severe anxiety, a tight chest, knotted stomach, heart palpitations and difficulty breathing. The world seemed unreal. Everything had suddenly become a huge effort. I was unable to spend any time alone and was worrying about the most ridiculous things.

In hindsight, it was at this point that I should have reinstated, but I was determined to be A.D. free, so I put up some blackout curtains to help with the early waking, stopped drinking coffee and tried to distract myself by keeping busy.

April 2015 - I discovered this site and learnt about withdrawal symptoms, windows and waves, supplements and tapering. The information gave me some relief as I now knew what was happening to me. I have been taking supplements for a few weeks (300mg magnesium, 1300mg omega 3 and 25mg diphenhydramine) which I feel has eased some of the symptoms.

However, I have been reluctant to reinstate because I had a window that lasted for two days and thought I was making progress. That was a couple of weeks ago and I’m feeling awful again now. It is becoming clear that I’m probably sensitised to SSRI’s after long term use and that I might have to suffer a protracted withdrawal.

Tomorrow, I have an appointment with a new doctor. Im going to ask her for a low dose of citalopram and something to help me get a proper night’s sleep. I just hope that I haven’t left it too late to reinstate, stabilise and conduct a very slow taper.

I really wish I had found this site back in January and had not had to suffer this cold turkey hell.

From what I've read your on good time to reinstate. I'm so glad you've found this site and figured out what was happening! Someone with more experience will be able to guide you.

2000 - sertraline for job anxiety low confidence (17 years old) ..which turned the next 16 years into nightmare!

On/off sertraline severe withdrawals every time. 2014 - felt better as reduced dose of sertraline no more inner restlessness. Doctor rushed off again. Hit severe withdrawal. Lost the little I had in life. Couldn't get stable again on 12.5mg. Was switched to prozac. Had severe reaction to prozac..came off in November 2015 at 6mg as felt more confused and damaged on it..Even more withdrawal ..rage, depression, dyphoria, near constant suicidal ideation, self harm impulses, doom, concrete block in head, unable to do much of anything with this feeling in head..went back on 6mg of sertraline to see if would alleviate anything. It didn't..reduced from December to June 2016 came off at 2.5mg sertraline as was hospitalised for the severe rage, suicidal impulses, and put on 50mg lofepramine which in 2nd week reduced all symptoms but gave insomnia which still have..psych stopped lofepramine cold turkey..no increased withdrawal symptoms new symptoms from lofepramine except persistant insomnia which has as side effect.

Taking Ativan for 8 months for the severe rage self harm impulses 1-3 times a week (mostly 2 times a week) at .5mg. Two months (I'm unsure exactly when the interdose started to happen) ago interdose withdrawal seemed to happen..2 days I think after the Ativan.

Nightmare that could have been avoided!

Hello Dan

I am going through the same thing after a too quick taper off Citalopram end of last year - 40mgs to 10mgs in 6 weeks and  I had all the same symptoms as you. I had to updose to ease the symptoms.

You have found a great place to give you all the help and support you will need to get you through this. I am only a newbie so the moderators are best to advise you. I am sure you will hear from one very soon.

Best wishes and good luck.

Thank you LoveandLight and Flowers for your encouraging words, it really helps to know that there are people who understand what I am going through.

Went to the doctor today, thankfully she seems to understand about tapering and agrees that it might take a year or more to successfully come off citalopram. She has prescribed me 20mg, which was my original dose, but after reading the advice on here about reinstatement I have decided that I dont really want to take that much and will probably try 10 mg for a week and see how I react. I was also given Zopiclone 7.5mg to help me get some much needed sleep, I'm actually looking forward to going to bed tonight.

I'm so disappointed in myself for having to go back on these drugs, I thought I could ride out the withdrawals and be free for ever. Unfortunately, it looks like I've got at least another year of this crap.

I decided to only take 5mg after reading this - http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/7562-about-reinstating-and-stabilizing-to-stop-withdrawal-symptoms/

I'm hoping this low dose will be enough to alleviate the withdrawal symptons and also mean that I will have a shorter taper after I have stabilised.

Hi Dan , welcome to the site.

No need to be disappointed in yourself at all.    You tried something and it didn't pan out how you hoped.  I think you're making

a very sensible move by reinstating.    It may help you avoid a world of pain.

I hope the 5mg lets you stabilize too , then you can come off in a safe and non-traumatic manner.

Best wishes ,  Fresh

1987-1997 pertofran , prothiaden , Prozac 1997-2002 Zoloft 2002-2004 effexor 2004-2010 Lexapro 40mg

2010-2012Cymbalta 120mg

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

March 2016 , 21mg

Welcome Dan. Please don't be disappointed in yourself, that type of thinking will only hold you back. You're in the process of figuring out what the best plan is for you to find the best you! Hi Dan!  I am in the same boat as you.  What I thought was a slow taper off Paxil, was actually very, very fast.  I am also reluctant to reinstate, but from what I am reading, it could be my only choice.  I don't want to relapse months down the line.  Pondering my next step.....

Best of luck to you on your journey.  I will keep you in my thoughts.

Started antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds in 1990 after complete mental breakdown; don't remember exactly what.

Most recent med combo was Paxil, Wellbutrin and Buspar started sometime between 1995 and 2000.

Continued on these meds with the addition of Klonapin in 2004.  Maxed out all doses except Klonapin.

Due to Paxil poop-out, started a slow taper in November 2014.

Paxil free since March 22, 2015.  Major withdrawal symptoms with a large spike at 4 weeks Paxil free.

Started taper of Wellbutrin 2 days ago.  Severe anxiety.

Current dosages:  Wellbutrin SR 300 mg (down from 400 mg,) Buspar 60 mg/day and Klonapin .12-.5 mg/night

Also currently taking Lotrel for high blood pressure related to kidney disease, Synthroid .075 mg and Aspirin 82 mg

Hi Dan

Hope the 5mg does the trick for you. I had to updose to my usual dose but think you are right starting out low - you won't have so much to taper off when you are ready. How are you feeling today?

Like the long bumpy journey without map or compass!! So true!

Flowers, I think it's too early to tell if 5mg is going to be enough, but haven't had any adverse effects yet, which is good. Took 3.25mg zopiclone last night but still woke up early. I used to be really good at sleeping, hating this insomnia.

Yes - it will be too early ( I think I have read here somewhere that it takes 4 days to get into the system ) but really hoping you feel some benefit soon.

I sympathise - lack of sleep is just awful. I manage to sleep now but I know it's drug induced from the Cit! ****** stuff! Doesn't feel like I have slept at all when I awake!

Keep strong.

Welcome, Dan.

I'm very happy to see this:

I decided to only take 5mg after reading this - http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/7562-about-reinstating-and-stabilizing-to-stop-withdrawal-symptoms/

I'm hoping this low dose will be enough to alleviate the withdrawal symptons and also mean that I will have a shorter taper after I have stabilised.

Please let us know how you're doing.

Suffering from brain fog today. Have been stuck in my armchair, unable to find any motivation, and I have a cracking headache. Anxiety levels feel a bit lower, I'm guessing this is because I got some sleep last night.

I'm still feeling disappointed in myself for undoing 2 months of struggle and possible healing. My family were so proud of me for the progress I had made, they could all see the old me coming back. I feel too ashamed to tell them about the RI. I still wonder if I would have been healed if I had waited a few more weeks, but the insomnia and anxiety were destroying me, the thought of this carrying on for months or years is too much.

Hi Dan. I reinstated last night and am feeling horrible this morning as well. This getting off Antidepressants is so tricky. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone. Hope your day improves.

Being able to share the experience with others who are going through the same thing is such a help. It's sad to think of all the millions of people who are struggling with withdrawal, have no support and have no idea what is happening to them.

Please do not be ashamed of reinstating. You're bravely doing the best thing for your nervous system.

Hi Dan ,   I waited 11 months after my last dose of Cymbalta before i finally gave in , and got well by starting pristiq.   It's like i have my life back ,

and now i'm tapering in a slower fashion with long holds.

You don't need to think of it as wasting 2 months of struggle.   Consider thinking of it as saving another 10 months of ever-worsening symptoms.

I wish I had reinstated earlier , but it is what it is.

As Flowers said , it takes 4 days to reach a steady-state in your blood-stream.

The fact you've had no adverse reaction is very promising.

You are probably right about saving 10 months, I might have recovered on my own, or I might have not, there is no way of telling and it isn't worth risking my sanity finding out. I'm going to take things really slowly from now on.

I feel more positive about reinstating today. I'm still not sleeping properly, woke up early, had a slight bout of anxiety but managed to get back to sleep again. This is progress for me, as a month ago I was waking up with intense fear and terror. The headaches are continuing to ease, as are the breathing difficulties.

It's so nice to read about your progress, Dan, as I am about one day behind you on reinstating.  So, I'm two nights in and no relief yet.  Trying to wait patiently.  Please continue to write about how you're feeling!

I had an hour of calmness this afternoon whilst watching the snooker on tv. All the tension left my muscles and I had a floating feeling. There was a mild tingling sensation in my head, it wasn't unpleasant. I even had a brief nap.

It didn't last long enough, the anxiety and headaches are back again.

Thanks for the info Marmite. I've been using the heart rate monitor on my phone and my pulse seems fairly normal, which makes me somewhat reassured. I had the same thing back in 2011 when I last tried to withdraw, my doc said it was my chest muscles and it cleared up once I reinstated, so I'm hoping that the same will be true this time.

Hey Sybilgirlus, I was considering updosing too. The last few months have been horrible and I just want to get my life back to 'normal' as quickly as possible. It's so hard to know what to do for the best. But, I feel things are changing for me and I'm going to stick at 5mg and see how it goes. Hope you start feeling some relief soon.

Yesterday was weird, I was having trouble stringing a sentence together. I have so much that I want to express, but just can't seem to get the words out. This morning, my mind seems a bit clearer, but not great, I keep typing and then when I read it back my words don't make much sense and I have to delete and start again. This is so frustrating, because my language skills are usually fairly good.

The headaches are continuing to ease and the sharp pain in my head is turning into a dull ache, which is far more bearable. Also, sensitivity to bright light has decreased a bit and I was able to bear sitting in the sunshine earlier.

Later, I'm going to try a bit of gardening and see how my breathing is. I used to love doing the garden, but have had no enjoyment from it at all lately and it has become neglected and overgrown.

Had a panic attack last night. It started a few minutes after eating a pickled onion, not sure if that was the real cause or just a coincidence? Anyway, I was in quite a state, made an error mixing my citalopram solution, and took 10mg instead of 5mg.

I'm feeling a bit drowsy today, with tingling in my hands and feet. I hope this mistake hasn't messed me up too much. Maybe, I'd stabilise quicker if I were to stay on 10mg? But then, maybe I wouldn't, and I'd have a much longer taper. Stick or twist? It's so hard knowing what to do when your brain is scrambled by withdrawal..

Hmm . . . my vote is for stick with 5mg dan.    Give it a chance.   You can always increase in a week or two as needed.

Could be the extra 5mg is responsible for the drowsiness and tingling. . . . or maybe that was coming anyway?

Hi Dan

I think you are bound to have up and down days as it's early days yet. I agree with Fresh stick at the 5mg. i went back up to 30mgs of Cit which was my regular dose for around 12 years and will have a much longer taper.

You are doing really well and can change things if needed later.

Okay, sticking with 5mg for now. I'm going to prepare tonight's dose in advance so I don't make another mistake. I'm still having real difficulties with cognitive function so need to be extra careful about this sort of thing.
