Sottana: Paxil withdrawal - questions and concerns

Sottana

Recommended Posts

Hi @Sottana, I'm also tapering paxil. I reinstated 10mg, when I got to 5.4mg I started having GI issues, nausea, getting full quickly, belching.

Did you experience also same gut problems?

I think the 5 to 6 mg range is the most difficult so when you get there please go slower.

Take care.

2017 - 2018 Lexapro (CT, no withdrawals)  2018 - 2019 Zoloft (CT, no withdrawals)

2/15/21 - paxil 20mg

5/1/22 - started fast tapter,  10mg 3 weeks, 5mg 3 weeks, 0mg 2 days.   7/1/22 - start of withdrawals, dizziness, nausea, loss of appetite, shaky. Reinstated 10mg

8/1/22 - 9mg - anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disorders (4-6 hours)  9/1/22 - 8mg - anxiety, panic attacks are gone. Sleep back to normal. Still struggling with appetite. Sporadic abdominal cramps  10/10/22 - 7.2 mg   11/10/22 - 6.6 mg - Tinnitus started after 2 weeks. Nausea is gone and appetite is slowly returning.

12/12/22 - 6 mg  1/11/23- 5.4 mg  1/13/23- 6 mg (up dosed) nausea is back in full force 5/9/23 - changed to home made liquid (dissolves 20mg in 20ml) - 5.9ml

Has anyone found they have become less tolerant to their fish oil supplement over time?

2008: start Lexapro 10 mg which is quickly upped to 20 mg. 2008:2013 try at least four individual times to get off Lexapro, never get lower than 5mg, settle at 15 mg. 2015: again, attempt to get off Lexapro and get to 5 mg. After 6 months, feel i'm stabilizing but go back on a higher dose because of one stressful event. 2016: go to 20 mg from 15 mg due to work stresses, hit severe tolerance for the first time and become very suicidal. 2016-2017: try viibryd and cymbata in an attempt to feel better. Also add Lamictal 150 at some point. 2017: eventually land on paxil 37.5 and Lamictal 150. January 2018: cut paxil to 25. April-July 2018: reduce Lamictal in 50 mg increments till im off August. 2018: reduce paxil to 20 mg. december 2018: dropped Paxil to 18 mg, SEVERE CRASH. I understand your question and have the same worry. In fact it seems to be a symptom in itself, that we are broken and won't heal. I don't believe anyone is beyond healing, you are not beyond healing.  We are, unfortunately, still in the middle of this mess so we can't feel it but it doesn't mean we aren't healing right now in this very moment. I can't believe how long this takes for some of us but it will happen, Adili. I am so sorry for how much you are having to endure to get there but I do believe your strength, courage, and perseverance will pay off. You are going to be okay, my friend.....we've just got to keep going. I am rooting for you, as always.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg; 3/29/24: 1.17 mg; 4/5/24: 1.14 mg; 4/13/24: 1.11 mg; 4/20/24: 1.09 mg

Cześć@Sottana, Jestem również zwężający się paxil. Przywróciłem 10mg, kiedy doszedłem do 5,4mg zacząłem mieć problemy żołądkowo-jelitowe, nudności, szybkie napełnianie, bekanie.

Czy wy też mieliście takie same problemy z jelitami?

Myślę, że zakres od 5 do 6 mg jest najtrudniejszy, więc kiedy już tam dotrzesz, zwolnij.

Dbać o siebie.

Unfortunately, I also have the same with the intestines, belching fast filling and overflowing inside. It started with escitalopram discontinuation. Is it IBS or reflux or is it worth getting a gastroscopy? Do you think reinstall may help with inestines?

2022 escitalopram from July 25 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg August-December- 7.5 mg, 5 mg, (1 month) 2.5 mg - C/T
WD
2023 Short reinstatement from WD date:

escitalopram May 25-June 12 5 mg, 2.5 mg plus interrupted

Reinstatement 24 07.23 0.5mg escitalopram, 18.08.23 0.22 escitalopram, 07.09. 0.28
Now 0.30 mg escitalopram

Last year 6 months on escitalopram, I was very agitated, hypomaniacal and with little need for sleep.
Since July 2023 reinstated and reduced from 0.50 mg to 0.30 mg Lexapro - difficulty sleeping and lack of sleep, eye pain and IBS. Anhedonia.

November 2023 - 0mg

Dear @Sottana--I truly can relate to what you're describing.  If it's any help, I notice that the feelings shift and waves eventually improve enough to keep going.  Overall, the symptoms have improved though it has been taking a huge amount of time.  I'm glad you're here.   Sending you hugs,  Arbor 💜

Hi @Sottana-- I hope my answer can be helpful.

Was there a specific point in time of your drug that you felt like maybe things were improving?

If you mean drug as in while I was still taking it, my experience was that the drug was both causing terrible problems which the doctors didn't recognize as problems with Zoloft and then Prozac, and they had pooped out.  As soon as I was off the drugs many of the problems went away.  However, I had as good as CT'ed and then had w/d to deal with.

maybe things were improving? Or was it just only felt in hindsight?

I felt little relief from acute symptoms through my first year.  The worst wave I experienced was during my second year  I followed the usual pattern of waves and windows, however it wasn't until my third 1/2 years that any appreciable windows occurred.  Whenever I was in a window I thought I was making progress.  While in waves, I was unsure whether I would ever heal.  My fridge is plastered with quotes from the Success Stories.  I read them everyday!

I'm now at 57 months.  With hindsight I can see that I'm much better even though I'm in and out of anhedonia which I didn't notice as much when the other symptoms were so strong.  About 2 months ago my psoriasis cleared.  I mention this as an example of something improving.  My patience is better, but I'm very careful about the company I keep.

My experience is different from yours in that I CT'ed.   Still, the symptoms of w/d are excruciating for both of us.  One of the hardest things for me has been resisting the discouragement that comes up.  I've often said to myself, "I'm so done with this!" to quote you!  Buddhist practice has helped me a lot in learning to step away from my thoughts whether they're normal or caused by neuro-emotions.  My desperation has made me a better student than I might've been otherwise--

To get back to your question, I did feel a turning point at the time when I reached the 4 year plus a few months point.  Keeping in mind that this was that much time completely off psychotropic meds following CT.

Ideally, people may wish to reach a reliable stability before cutting dosage further.  I'm not sure if that can always happen.  For some people tapering even minutely may imitate a very, very slow CT.  Alto or Shep would be better assessors, however.  I don't have the experience with proper tapering first hand.  I tend to believe that my own healing is based on reclaiming my neurological health free of drugs.   It has been brutal, and now it is better, even consistently better.  The lingering occupancy of the drugs in the lipid rafts (if I understand the studies and the studies are honest) can last a long time after quitting the drug.  As it wears off in my system, and as my system reclaims its more native environment, in my mind, I can "picture" the recovery I'm feeling.  I realize this is just a speculation.

Please forgive me for going on so long, Adili.  We're all in the same boat, suffering from these drugs and finding our way to getting off them.  Without the support here, I don't know that I could have made it this far.

Purple badge of courage to you 💜

I’m wondering if anyone has had good results with acupuncture while being extremely sensitized? I’m trying to look into things to relieve my extreme head pressure and electrical over-activity feeling in my forehead 🙏

My dear friend @Sottana

Just wanted to drop by with some good wishes sent your way💕

I don’t know unfortunately how acupuncture affects sensitive nervous system.
I see you have been holding for some time now, and I think that’s a very wise decision you made there. I have decided to also hold for how ever long I need to, if I ever feel that my nervous systems is getting shaky. Going to fast has always been my downfall.

Oh and I found the perfect quote for you;

« It’s often the small steps,

not the giant leaps,

that bring about

the most lasting changes «

Be well my friend 💕

  • KenA changed the title to Sottana: Paxil withdrawal - questions and concerns

Thanks to SA for approving my name change.

What the hell do people that have both severe chemical sensitivities and akathisia do? I’m too agitated/can’t focus enough to do any of the programs to treat the extreme sensitivities. I feel like my world is getting smaller and smaller. This journey genuinely feels so damn brutal pretty much 24/7. I’ve heard some people say the chemical sensitivities can go with healing and little effort made by the individual, but something tells me mine aren’t going to just magically go. Just feeling so stuck and defeated

@Sottana just to let you know i've had these extreme sensitivities regarding food and chemicals and all the time (4 years) it turns out I had been in poop out/tolerance. It had built up and then one day i was really in poop out, then the sensitivities lowered somewhat. Bye Sebas

@Safran had a VQL (very quick look) at your situation. Short summary: The bloodpressure and/or migraine medicins that your doctor has given you (since last months) are ramping up paxil WD. So unless life threatening get rid of them, then stabilise and continue tapering like you were doing before.

@Sebas, thank you very much for the warning, and I don't drink them because I found that they are not good when you are in wd, only that afterwards the problem is blood pressure. My condition is very complicated and difficult to stabilize.I hope you are doing well.

@Safran I have been off paroxetine for a while now. The reaction I was having to the drug was so extreme and violent that I was ultimately led with no choice but to come off of it. I have been drug free for 16 months and experience a level or torture every day that I can not put into words even if i tried. For those of us that are truly paradoxical to a drug, there is not much that can be done. At a certain point the reaction is so violent and horrific that you can be left with no choice but to come off. I truly hope you are not in this position and are able to continue tapering. Cold turkey after many years is hell on earth. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

March updosed to 20 mg April 11: dropped to 19.4 mg due to akathsia (still experiencing akathsia symptoms from updose) April 20: 19 mg Paxil May 4: 18.7 Paxil July 5: 18.2 July 12: 17.8 Aug 19: 17.5 Aug 26: 17.3 Oct 20: 17.1 Nov 3: 16.9, 8/17/20: 16.6 after nine month hold, 8/24/20: 16.4, 8/31/20:16.2, 9/14/2020: 16.0, 9/21/20: 15.8, 9/28/20: 15.6, 10/19/20:15.4, 10/26/20: 15.2, 11/2/20: 15.1, 11/7/20: 14.8, 3/6/2-: 14.5, 3/20/20: 14.3, 4/3/20: 13.9, 4/10/2021: 13.7. 4/21/21: 13.5, 5/5/2021: 13.1, 12.2 8/12/2021 (slowly microtapered to this number. I just can’t remember the exact dates), 11.8 9/6/2021, 11.6 9/13/21, 11.2 9/27/21, 11.1 9/30/21.....11/5/21 switched to 10 mg tablet. I am holding to stabilize for the foreseeable future. 3/25/22: 9.4, 5/6/22: 9.0, 5/30/22: 8.25, 6/7/22: 8.1, 7/722: 7.65, 8/16/22: 7.39, 9/22/22: 6.91, 10/1/22: 6.78

I sympathize with you because I see you are in a big struggle like me. Thank you for your reply.

@safran This is terribly tough. Tapered down too fast and also had a reaction. Sometimes I don't understand what kind of situation Im into and how to survive this severe WD. Since I have taken zoloft for so long, there is no quick fix. Have some relatives in Sweden so just wanted to say hello. 🙏

2008 Zoloft 50mg

2022 May - 62,5mg (doctor wanted to increase). Felt sick, went back to 50mg efter 2 weeks

2022 Oct - Reducing dose to 37,5mg (from 50mg). WD in few days, advised to go back to 50 - I then got adverse worse paradoxical effect

2022 Oct - Zoloft 50mg severe side effects/adverse reaction

2023 May 5th - Reducing dose to 25mg (directly from 50mg by Dr, WD).

2023 Aug 1st - Reducing dose to 12,5mg

2023 Oct 10th - Removed dose from 12mg to zero by Dr. Tried reinstate citalopram after 3 months didnt work bad reaction. In Terrible WD.

Use melatonin 4mg. Lergigan 5mg. Omega 3, D-vitamin, magnesium glycinate, zink.
