It is wonderful to read your success story, @Hibari!   I am so pleased you are feeling better and living life again! Thank you for sharing what worked for you. Your story brings me a lot of hope. 💖

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg

Hi @Hibari

Congratulations on healing!! Thank you for sharing your success story. It helps so much to read it, inspires and encourages to keep going.

I so appreciate your taking the time to thoughtfully write out your reflections and lessons learned. Hearing other people's experiences, good and bad, is so motivating and gives me hope.

Dropping off is still not as easy but I’m not wired or hyper.  I just think I’m still low on something the brain and body produces to ease me into sleep.

I use melatonin for this very reason. I'm curious whether you've tried it before -- maybe it doesn't work for you? I've heard it doesn't necessarily do the trick for everyone. Just asking bc I don't see it mentioned in your post.

Congratulations again, I'm delighted for you! Well done.

Hi,

Thank you.  I see you are off as well and hope you are feeling well.

I did use a low dose of Melatonin for about 9 months, maybe .25-.50.  I did work for awhile and then I found I was feeling a little depressed in the morning.  I tapered off and haven't used it since.  I'm not against it but find the magnesium is working best.  I forget to mention I do use a homepathic remedy called Arsenicum Album 30C at bedtime and I'm finding that working too-I'm a big fan of homeopathy.

Thanks so much for your good wishes.

Thank you @Hibari

Yes I'm off drugs, still in protracted withdrawal. I'm seeing improvements, though; and coupled with the boost of reading success stories such as yours, I feel confident that recovery from PAWS is possible.

Thanks for the homeopathy info, as well as the psych-k recommendation. Sounds interesting, I look forward to reading more about that.

Your kind, calm manner helped me so much during those dark days of going on benzos and then getting off.

@Hibari congratulations on getting off the drugs, I'm really humbled when I see people withdrawing from multiple meds.

I was fortunate enough to avoid poly drugging when my mirtazapine taper when badly wrong in the autumn. I can't imagine having to get off of more than just one poison!

I've been taking mirtazapine for 10 years now and had two attempts to get off which have gone awry. Can I ask how long you took it for  before tapering and how you managed the insomnia which is usually such a prominent withdrawal symptom?

I'm trying to decide whether I'm even being realistic about getting off without my life going down the toilet, especially after such long exposure to the drug. TIA

2011 - started 15 mg mirtazepine. 2015- successfully tapered off. 2016 - Reinstated on 3.75mg as a sleep aid. July 2019 - 3.75mg Stopped working, increased to 15 then 22.5mg.Sept 2020 initiated slow liquid taper. Sept 2021 at 7.5mg for 3 months hit very bad withdrawals (also very stressed). Increased dose to 30 for 3 weeks then reduced to 22.5mg3rd Nov - Started magnesium supplement. 3rd Nov - started oestrogen hrt gel. 20th Dec - stopped oestrogen after 3 week taper. Currently still on 22.5mg mirtazepine and oral magnesium. 12/1 started with 1 capsule omega 3 fish oil. 14/ developed very loose motions so stopping the fish oil. 14/2/2022: after 5 months on the same dose decided to restart taper with a 5% cut: 21.4mg mirtazepine. Low histamine diet and magnesium. 14/03 reduced another 5% 20. 25mg 01/05 reduced to 19mg 01/06 reduced to 18.3mg 01/08 reduced to 17.3 mg 01/10 reduced to 16.5mg

Congratulations HIbari! I know it's been a long and difficult journey...I'm happy to see you persisted and have found your way through. Wishing you continued healing and well-being.

Remeron for depression. Started at 7.5 mg. in 2005. Gradual increases over 8 years, up to 45 mg. in 2012.Began tapering in June 2013. Went from 45 to 30 mg in the first 3-4 months. Held for a couple of months.Started tapering by 3.75 mg every month or 2, with some longer holding periods. Eventually went down to 3.75 mg. about April 2014. Stopped taking Remeron August 2014. Developed issues with histamine a week after stopping--symptoms reduced through diet and a few supplements. Currently having issues with a few foods. Most of the histamine intolerance has resolved or is at least, in remission.

Current Medications:

Current Supplements: Cannabis (CBD and THC), Vitamin C, D, Quercetin, CoQ10, Tart Cherry, Probiotic, Phytoplankton oil, magnesium, Methyl B. Hi @Jools44

I was on Mirtazapine for 11 months before I started tapering from a dose of 41.25 (I resisted going to 45mgs and that was my way of showing control).  Then I tapered for about two years.

I was not as bothered by insomnia for Mirtazapine though I did have restless nights.  My insomnia didn't hit till I went through a badly mangled Lamictal withdrawal.  If I wasn't in such a bad cold turkey state, I think I could have ridden through some of those sleepless nights.

I think tapering at a rate so that you are functional is a good way to go. That doesn't mean you will feel great but that you can keep your activities of daily living in place.  That could be work, caring for yourself or others, etc.

I really believe you can do it.  I say this because I've known people who have been on varying medications for longer than you have, who decide to come off them and do.

@Hibari thank you for your words of encouragement. I see so many people struggling to get off after being on for a significantly shorter time than I've been on it and fear I've left it too late. But I do read success stories too which given me hope.

It must feel good to be finally free of all the drugs. Life begins again 😊

@Jools44Life does begin again.  In my success story, I posted some of the things I did.  If you have any questions about the Psych-K work, which helped me a lot with my taper off benzos, please PM me.

Hi Hibari.  I am not coping at all well having been so poly drugged; CTd and rapid tapers.  Reinstated on the benzo and now struggling to get off.  In severe tolerance to the benzo as getting zero relief.   Thinking to go faster but not sure if thats going to make it worse.  Still on very very low dose cymbalta.  Do i just continue tapering.   Reinstating was the worst mistake but did it on drs advice.   Its wonderful to know you are better and i wish you all the best.

Hi @Worthy

I'm sorry it's so rough for you right now and I really understand that kind of pain.

Withdrawal is so different from anything else because our impulse, when we are not medicated, is that if we are experiencing something bad, we remove that substance from our body.

With withdrawal, removing something from our body quickly, almost never works. It usually makes things worse. Clonzapam never did anything for me. Never really helped me sleep and made me depressed but because I was dependent on it, I had to taper.  So, it was the  strangest thing to keep tapering, which was hard, off of something that made me feel terrible. I think that's the experince of most people on this site. We move towards getting med free without many rewards along the way.  Takes a lot of courage and from my perspective, definitely worth it.

My experience is that tapering quickly off of a benzo, or any med usually creates a worse situation.  I really understand the desire but for me, the best way though is to do a  consistent taper, using your body and minds knowledge to hold when its too much and start again when you can handle moving forward.

We all do the best we can. I made lots of mistakes and choices getting off meds, all coming from the place of trying to get better.  I got off and believe that we all can.

I did a micro taper off my benzo. I cut every other day (my rhythm) and then would hold when the cuts hit. Some people cut every 4 days or so and you have to find your pace.  Sometimes my hold would be 4 days, sometimes 7. I would hold till I felt strong enough to continue. There are people on benzo buddies who hold for longer periods of time and it works for them.

  • Mentor

congratulations Hibari

Great advice about tapering and withdrawal!

  • pysch med history: 1974 @ age 18 to Oct 2017 (approx 43 yrs total)
  •  Drug list: stelazine, haldol, elavil, lithium, zoloft, celexa, lexapro(doses as high as 40mgs), klonopin, ambien, seroquel(high doses), depakote, zyprexa, lamictal- plus brief trials of dozens of other psych meds over the years
  • started lexapro 2002, dose varied from 20mgs to 40mgs. First attempt to get off it was 2007- WD symptoms were mistaken for "relapse".
  •  2013 too fast taper down to 5mg but WD forced me back to 20mgs
  •  June of 2105, tapered again too rapidly to 2.5mgs by Dec 2015. Found SA, held at 2.5 mgs til May 2016 when I foolishly "jumped off". felt ok until  Sept, then acute WD hit!!  reinstated at 0.3mgs in Oct. 2106
  • Tapered off to zero by  Oct. 2017 Doing very well.
  • Nov. 2018 feel 95% healed, age 63
  • Jan. 2020 feel 100% healed, peaceful and content
  • Dec 2023 Loving life! ❤️ with all it's ups and downs ;)

Thank you so much for sharing your journey and what has helped you. Congratulations on being med free!

Reading your journey is helping me a lot today. I'm coming off of lamictal and am in the thick of it right now and feeling discouraged about how far I have to go but reading your story today gave me a burst of hope.

1993- Ritalin (unsure of of Dosage 1996- Discontinued ritalin, started dexedrine (10 mgs) 1997- started Clonodine for sleep issues from dexedrine (tapered off of it around 2002)

2007- Trazadone for sleep (not sure how long I was on it, it was less than 2 years, could have been way less) 2011-  6 month taper off Dexedrine
2015- Lamictal (250) 2015 - Seroquel, Latuda, prn gabapentin, PRN Propranolol, haldol and PRN Ativan (discontinued all (except Ativan, propranolol and gabapentin) 1-2 months after starting)

2017-Lamictal, September:  started taper down

2018- Lamictal-  March- down to 150, decided to pause taper 2018- Gabapentin- Discontinued PRN Gabapentin in October2019- Ativan- discontinued PRN Ativan immediately

2022- Lamictal- April- started the taper again

2022- Lamictal- Currently at 40 mg (as of 4/6/23)

currently 37.5 mg (as of 5/22/23) then I paused

- Currently taking PRN propanolol  very infrequently might consider going off of it once my lamictal taper is done

Current supplements- Magnesium glycinate, vitamin B, pure cbd oil,Vitamin D, Ginkgo biloba, fish oil, DIM, Skullcap tincture,

@Hibari thank you so much for sharing. Your success story gives me hope.

I took only ONE dose (15mg) of Mirtazapine before coming down with an immediate adverse reaction and withdrawal like symptoms. It's been 13 weeks and I continue to suffer. One of my worst symptoms is insomnia. Can I ask, how are you sleeping now? Has it improved since you posted your success story? Also, did you suffer from any histamine food intolerance? This is another of my major symptpms. I stomach pain, headache and prickling sensations in my hands and feet whenever I eat anything high histamine. If you did, how long did it take to go away?

Thank you for sharing.

Jan 29, 2023 - Took my one and only dose of Mirtazapine (15 mg). Developed an immediate adverse reaction with list of withdrawal-like symptoms.

@Chompoo

I'm sorry you had an adverse reaction to taking one dose of Mirt.

I understand how hard that is.

Since I wrote my success story, I had a very bad setback due to surgery and anesthesia. It was a horrible experience and I ended up back on Mirt because I had horrific insomnia and rumination. The Mirt didn't work and after 7 weeks, I started tapering. I'm now down to 4.3mgs from 7.5.

I want to assure you that after I got off of Mirt the first time, I was able to sleep again. Same when I got off the benzos.

I did not follow a low histamine diet the first time but I am now. I also take a vegetarian formula of DAO, which is supposed to help with histamine issues around food. I've never had histamine problems before but I thought I would try it.

I healed from my setback after about 6 months even though I thought I never would.  Many of my symptoms dropped off before then.

You will heal from this and the symptoms will ease.  Our brains and bodies are healing all the time even if we did nothing to help them.

@Hibari I am so sorry about your setback following your surgery. I totally understand how difficult insomnia can get and I'm glad you have healed from your setback. I hope your taper will go smoothly.

My sleep is so bad that I'm relieved to hear it will get better. I keep to a low histamine diet and take DAO enzyme. But I still react to food. I hope my histamine intolerane will go away with time.

Thank you so much for your reassurances and I wish you a good day!
