NewMe Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Hi everyone. I am new to the forum but not new to antidepressants. 3/10/2014 marks the first day of a hard decision to micro taper from effexor ER. I hope I can do this without the intense wd symptoms of times past - and without the return of the symptoms for which I was prescribed the medication. Paxil CT withdrawal 10/2012 Effexor 37.5 started 02/2013, 75mg by 03/2013, 150mg by 05/2012 (approx) Effexor 3/10/2014 Microtaper -3beads I'M A WEANER! atavan PRN ,Paxil approx 20 yrs ago for major depression Switched to Klonopin PRN through to current Paxil wore out Changed to Effexor Depakote added enormous weight gain - flat affect - led to depression - dropped depakote Dropped Effexor, changed to Paxil PDoc added mixed salts amphetamines for ADHD - took for 2 yrs - was ok at first but had to cut as symptoms too intense - then the crash was too much. STOPPED Vyvanse started in 2013 (APRIL) - more smooth than IR amphetamine tabs---Have not used vyvanse daily in full amt since May 2013 Paxil CT withdrawal 10/2012 Klonopin CT WD Switched Klonopin to Xanax prn - too strong WD CT from XANAX after taking for a while - it was awful but can be done if you hold on! Back to Klonopin PRN - working very hard to avoid taking it at all. Effexor 37.5 started 02/2013, 75mg by 03/2013, 150mg by 05/2012 (approx) Effexor 150mg 3/10/2014 Microtaper -3beads 3/11/2014-4beads ,3/12/14 - 5, 3/13/14 -6, 3/15/14 - 7, 3/18 - 8, 3/22 - 10, 3/24 - 12, 4/6 - 13, 4/7 - 14, 4/11 - 16 - on 4/19 ran out of brand took generic. NewMe Posted March 10, 2014 Author Posted March 10, 2014 Hi Bubble Thank you - Yes it is a microtaper - (erk - sorry thought I posted that!) Learned the hard way accidentally - Had a back injury - no insurance - so idiot me took klonopin to sleep it off and had already been skipping doses (every two days) of paxil - so when I was oblivious (idiot, I know) to missing more doses of paxil, I CT it. To end up enduring a hell of a time withdrawing from Benzo. But I did it. I am taking 150mg xr - effexor - the dr has me on 37.5 x's 4 per day (150 ttl). I moved out of state and he was one who believed wd is all in my head and SOME people have a short discontinuation of minimal proportions. Otherwise, he basically told me I was unbalanced and needed to be on meds my entire life. Be that as it may, I know CT is not the way to go. I was NEVER actively suicidal until I was put on these ADs after a time. The support I had back when I went on them was phenom - so I am uncertain as to the benefit the initial paxil introduction had VERSES the great support I had. I battle suicidal thoughts on ads and I hate it. I felt much less suicidal off the meds - but very raw (attributed to CT method). I did ok when taking the ADS every other day but that is absolutely not a good idea either. In any event - thank you for the welcome. I will adjust my siggy as I recall past dosages etc I'M A WEANER! atavan PRN ,Paxil approx 20 yrs ago for major depression Switched to Klonopin PRN through to current Paxil wore out Changed to Effexor Depakote added enormous weight gain - flat affect - led to depression - dropped depakote Dropped Effexor, changed to Paxil PDoc added mixed salts amphetamines for ADHD - took for 2 yrs - was ok at first but had to cut as symptoms too intense - then the crash was too much. Moderator Emeritus Petunia Posted March 10, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Posted March 10, 2014 Welcome NewMe, Thank you for sharing your story. Congratulations on your previous withdrawal from Klonopin, that must have been difficult. Please be careful with it now. How are you feeling at the moment? Are you having any symptoms? If you are generally stable and feeling well, then I think a microtaper will work fine for you, there is a lot of help and support here if you need it. Have a look through our symptoms and self care section for non-drug ways to handle emotional problems: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/forum/8-symptoms-and-self-care/ Many people find that omega 3 fish oil and magnesium are helpful in recovery from antidepressants. Petu. I'm not a doctor. My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one. My Introduction Thread Full Drug and Withdrawal History Brief Summary Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects 2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010 Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal) May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins. Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens. Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days. April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close. VIDEO: Where did the chemical imbalance theory come from? NewMe Posted March 11, 2014 Author Posted March 11, 2014 Greetings, Petu! I envy your living in Australia! Its cold and snowy in NY! I appreciate the positive thoughts regarding microtaper. It takes so much courage to come off these meds - so thank you! Yes, the Klonopin and xanax tapers were he worst hell I have endured - I knew about AD wd - but not all that versed on benzos. I really believed I would not survive but I did - and I actively worked incredibly hard w limited resources. As for stability - I think the ADS have always caused - for me - a depressing if not dangerous suicidal ideation at times - so I often ask myself if I am stable. Kind of a double edge sword there. I laughed authentically and spontaneously off ADs - but felt raw and brain exposed (LOL) when I went off them 5 mos. CT was not good and I did it during benzo wd as well. I felt hope and joy AD free - but so very anxious and fearful. I feel bout as good as I have or can while taking ADs. My life situation is not ideal - but I have no assurance when, if ever, this will change. Divorce, loss of business, move - etc So here I am - sick of being on the meds. I want to do this slowly and with mindfullness. Not kicking & screaming like last time! I already had few swoosh brain zaps today - but not intense at all. I get them anyways even when on the meds at times - may be hormonal stuff going on too - I appreciate any insight! Moderator Emeritus mammaP Posted March 11, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Posted March 11, 2014 Hi Newme, I am glad you decided on a micro taper for effexor, it is one nasty little drug to get off! I started with Paxil too and had horrific suicidal feelings. I'm also tapering effexor and have been tapering for 2 years now. Sadly I went too fast and learned the hard way so reinstated and started a very slow taper from the last few beads. I wish I had known about micro tapers when I started out. **I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge. Different drugs occasionally (mostly benzos) 1976 - 1981 (no problem) 1993 - 2002 in and out of hospital. every type of drug + ECT. Staring with seroxat 2002 effexor. Tapered March 2012 to March 2013, ending with 5 beads. Withdrawal April 2013 . Reinstated 5 beads reduced to 4 beads May 2013 Restarted taper Nov 2013 OFF EFFEXOR Feb 2015 Tapered atenolol and omeprazole Dec 2013 - May 2014 Tapering tramadol, Feb 2015 100mg , March 2015 50mg July 2017 30mg. May 15 2018 25mg Taking fish oil, magnesium, B12, folic acid, bilberry eyebright for eye pressure. My story http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4199-hello-mammap-checking-in/page-33 Lesson learned, slow down taper at lower doses. Taper no more than 10% of CURRENT dose if possible
NewMe Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 Hi There, Mamma P. Thank you for the welcome!! Its weird but when I started paxil almost 20 yrs ago - I did not have suicidal ideation - it came back around 2003 or so. I did not have it during my med holiday of 4-5 mos - but it did return when I started up effexor again when I was completely stressed out. I am not a young teen nor an adult - you know the black box warning - pffft I have been trying to find new methods that are more effective for handling stress and my outlook. It helps a lot for sure. Admittedly, I have taper envy - I wish I were as far along as you are!!! LOL How are you feeling now? Moderator Emeritus bubble Posted March 13, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Posted March 13, 2014 I would definietly very much appreciate the info on perimenopause (although it sounds totally scary: I haven't had a child yet and was hoping I can still jump a train before I turn 40...) but my hormonoes are definitely crazy: sometimes my temperature gets elevated 2 weeks before the period, not to mention craving for fatty food, irritabilty, etc. maybe you could start a thread on symptoms and self-care unless there is one there already? It is a support forum and chat is available - a wonderful, supportive community of people! I wish someone had told me about perimenopause - I had seen a show on Oprah when I was around 28 - (about 100 yrs ago! LOL). My sister was on ADS and in and out of the hospital with depression back then - she was smack in the middle of peri. I mentioned this to her and of course the MDs discounted such a thing. Now we have a nod to PMDD and peri - more than likely as an oppty for ADS to be prescribed as is often done. Bio identical hormones seem to be on the rise in helping during peri - a viable option if one can afford to do this. I am vegetarian & most of my foods are organic - esp dairy due to the hormones often given to cattle. FFwd to 2014 - my sister is now menopausal. She ended up on the tail end of recognition for peri - but suffered needlessly and on ADS to treat her symptoms for yrs. She weaned off effexor after over 20 yrs on ADS and is better than ever. NewMe Posted March 15, 2014 Author Posted March 15, 2014 UPDATE Taper - I am down 7 beads of effexor 150 and plan to hold. So far, some OCD and hormonal worry is pitching in - which I use a lot of CBT and al anon tools to ground myself. And this awesome forum. Heading into PMDD territory. Have to add that my Pdoc suggested in the past that I add a few effexor capsules to my reg 150mg day dose when experiencing pmdd. - I have never found any logical reasoning behind this or his denial that there is such a thing as discontinuation to the effect that it would sideline most of us. SSDD - being told I am needing to be on psych meds long term. I have to be honest here - I have a lot of trauma from the last few yrs in life - and I was in serious psych danger for a while - until I went to al anon and therapy and started actively pushing myself to find peace in daily meditation and living MINDFULLY even if the day was a suck one. Its HARD and a departure from my usual way of being. I have begun the road to recovery of my life and have very good days now. EVEN THOUGH my life on paper looks like crap. I embrace it. And roll with it. Of course I expect to have tough days - but instead of sliding into the abyss, I have found a way on MOST DAYS to live as best I can in the moment. Cuts down the stress level. NewMe Posted March 25, 2014 Author Posted March 25, 2014 Update - I started micro tapering on 3/11/14 As of 3/24/14 I am at -12 beads of effexor So far - seems a lot less crappy than the very first time I lost my mind as I ran out of the RX nearly 20 yrs ago - not knowing about wdrwal Little brain fog today but I took a very tiny amt of Vyvanse (which can cause a bit of crappiness); A nit of anxiety Pms maybe which causes anxiety One weird thing I notice the last yr - I have this weird tic or spasm at times - its very quick and feels like my head imperceptibly spasms to the right - ish for a sec - not sure if it physically does this as I cannot see it - but feels like it with some weird eye spasm. WTF is this from? Anyone? A bit apathetic last few days but thats not all that weird for me - just uncomfortable and is probably situational. All in all - the taper is going ok. Learning new ways to deal with feelings and emotions - behavior. Administrator Altostrata Posted March 25, 2014 Administrator Posted March 25, 2014 Are you reducing a bead per day? You might want to give your nervous system a rest for now, for a couple of weeks at least. To micro-taper, you need to find out your tolerance first before stepping on the gas. It takes about 4 days for a change to fully register. Please don't go faster than that. You might exceed your tolerance for dosage reduction and not know it until it's too late. Please read this again http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/2878-micro-taper-instead-of-10-or-5-decreases/?p=48859 It's there for a good reason! This is not medical advice. Alto - I had heard that - however I had them before when I was not withdrawing and taking the meds reg. I thought brain zaps were the weird sensation of falling with a jolt while standing upright - hard to describe....I have had those before. Do you happen to know if tics are permanent after SSNI WD? NewMe Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 UPdating HI all. Happy Thursday to all of you. I am currently holding at -14 beads of effexor from 4/7. The taper has been relatively tolerable thus far. Considering I am in perimenopause and my living situation and recent events with elderly parents and family have tested my sanity above and beyond. I am doing pretty well. I have to find a new PDOC because I am in a new state and almost out of effexor. Procrastination. Nothing new there. I had one day where I sprang wake and panicked. Got it under control and none since. One side effect I noticed from other withdrawal experiences is when things suddenly seem surreal - unreal - or scrambled. Confusing and distorted thinking - sometimes hits for a moment or so. Not as bad as last time I went through ct wd. Anyways. Just wanted to offer hope to others who may be embarking on the rd to recovery. Moderator Emeritus Rhiannon Posted April 10, 2014 Moderator Emeritus Posted April 10, 2014 Sounds like you might be talking about derealization and depersonalization, often abbreviated DP/DR. You'll find lots of posts and maybe a few threads on that topic here. It's a common withdrawal effect. Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease". Long story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything. Amitryptiline, Prozac, bupropion, buspirone, flurazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, Paxil, citalopram, lamotrigine, gabapentin...probably more I've forgotten. Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010. Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea. Feb 15 2010: 300 mg Neurontin 200 Lamictal 10 Celexa 0.65 Xanax and 5 mg Ambien Feb 10 2014: 62 Lamictal 1.1 Celexa 0.135 Xanax 1.8 Valium Feb 10 2015: 50 Lamictal 0.875 Celexa 0.11 Xanax 1.5 Valium Feb 15 2016: 47.5 Lamictal 0.75 Celexa 0.0875 Xanax 1.42 Valium 2/12/20 12 0.045 0.007 1 May 2021 7 0.01 0.0037 1 Feb 2022 6 0!!! 0.00167 0.98 2.5 mg Ambien Oct 2022 4.5 mg Lamictal (off Celexa, off Xanax) 0.95 Valium Ambien, 1/4 to 1/2 of a 5 mg tablet I'm not a doctor. Any advice I give is just my civilian opinion.
NewMe Posted April 18, 2014 Author Posted April 18, 2014 Hi Rhi For sure I have had DR & DP in childhood and in the past. These small incidents or blips are fractionary compared to DR & DP from times past. I used to call DP & DR "Helium Head" because thats what it felt like. These other quick incidences feel markedly different but hard to describe - its like scrambled egg brain for a few seconds. Perhaps it is a form on DP or DR - My P Doc told me yrs ago children have DP & DR as a means to cope w trauma and unpleasant life situations but stop doing it so much as they learn to handle life better. Apparently I had not stopped doing it. Now I ground myself and sit in the moment and live it for what it is. Its nice actually! I cant find the words to define how it is different from my past DR & DP - its just odd as heck. In other news - I have come to the conclusion I cannot take ADHD meds at all - ever. Too intense and leave me feeling like ass. Waiting on warmer weather to arrive in the meantime. Administrator Altostrata Posted April 18, 2014 Administrator Posted April 18, 2014 Any doctor can prescribe Effexor. You don't have to go to a pdoc for it. This is not medical advice.
