Any tardive akathisia success stories?

Thought this might be a really nice post of hope for a condition that is usually seen as very hopeless. 🙂

I've seen a few people successfully heal from acute akathesia by changing their dosage etc. But was wondering if there was any success stories on tardive or withdrawal akathesia, especially for those who aren't even on meds anymore?

Also if anyone has been in a similar position as me - I haven't been on any drugs since 2018, but I smoked weed for a few days in June 2021, then I was suddenly hit with akathesia 3 months later (I've never even had akathesia before).

Hi Rbvdk,

And I did find this topic,

Blog: My akathisia experience by akathisiainfo

It does seem to document recovery from akathisia and is hopeful.

Meantime, I'll leave your recent query here, in Success Stories for now.

(I've been moving it around a bit, seems okay here, for now)

Sometimes I think that many of those who have healed from their symptoms, may not be around much anymore.

We'll see.

And best,

2022 May- continuing with limited activity on site, just something I need to do right now

Started with psycho meds/psychiatric care circa 1988.  In retrospect, and on contemplation, situational overwhelm.

Rounding up to 30 years of medications(30 medication trials, poly-pharmacy maximum was 3 at one time).

5/28/2015-off Adderal salts 2.5mg. (I had been on that since hospital 10/2014)

12/2015---just holding, holding, holding, with trileptal/oxcarb at 75 mg. 1/2 tab at hs.  My last psycho med ever!  Tapered @ 10% every 4 weeks, sometimes 2 weeks to

2016 Dec 16 medication free!!

Longer signature post here, with current supplements.

Herb and alcohol free since 5/15/2016.  And.....I quit smoking 11/2021.  Can you say Hallelujah?(took me long enough)💜

@Rbvdk  I came out the other side. My Akasthesia (and TD) came from nowhere about a year after quitting SSRIs. It was so severe initially that I had friction burns on the top of my feet from movements in my sleep and my wife considered calling an ambulance. I saw a psychiatrist over it (he didn’t know why and gave me some BS cause about return of initial symptoms) 3 years post zero I occasionally get the odd mild shake and urge to squirm around for a minute or so at bedtime, but that’s all.

We heal.

50 mg Sertraline Nov 2016 to Dec 2016

100 mg Sertraline Jan - March 2017

50 mg Sertraline April - June 2017

25 mg Sertraline July 2017 - Sept 2018

12.5 mg Sertraline Oct 2018

0 mg Nov 1 2018

I didn’t know it was tardive dysenisia but around 3 months into withdrawal i was uncontrollable gurning expression I kept doing. I tried stopping but it was involuntary. It comes and goes now. Every time it comes back I feel so disheartened but the fact that it goes gives me hope it will stop eventually

Put on sertraline in January 2016 50 mg. 100mg Feb 16-May18

may 18 50 mg some withdrawals

august 18 rapid taper off. September 22 put on 50 mg due to withdrawals

2 weeks later up to 100mg. Bad reaction

on 100 for 4 weeks. Then 50 for two weeks 25 for two weeks and 25 every other day for a week

off since 8 December having waves and windows

Not the same thing but can become the same thing for some specialists. If your withdrawal akathisia doesn't go away within 6 months it is considered tardive from then on.

Mine is on the borderline given that my last dopamine antagonist dose was in April.
It could be acute because I'm on Mirtazapine but given symptom timing that's unlikely.

Early December 2021 - Started Metroclopramide (Anti-Emetic) nausea 30mg (10mg 3x day).

Mid December 2021 - Akathisia symptoms start; Metroclopramide gets changed to PRN, taken 5mg, first every other day, then once every 3 days.

Early March 2022 - Akathisia diagnosed; Metroclopramide stopped; started Propranolol 10mg x twice a day to no effect, Biperiden PRN (0.5mg to 1mg).

Early April 2022 - Started Tandospirone 30mg (10mg 3x day), Quetiapine 25mg (only taken once, it skyrocketed symptoms).

Mid April 2022 - Mirtazapine 7.5mg, 10 day window followed. Discontinued Propranolol.

1st of May 2022 - Akathisia symptoms continue, Mirtazapine upped to 15mg. 7 day window followed. Tandospirone cut to 2x 10mg.

20th of May 2022 - Mirtazapine cut back to 11.75mg (3/4 of a 15mg pill).
June 2022 - Mirtazapine updose to 15mg. Tandospirone and Biperiden discontinued. Klonopin started PRN (0.5mg)

Current regimen: Mirtazapine at bedtime for akathisia/sleep/anxiety/depression, 15mg; Magnesium at bedtime for akathisia/sleep/anxiety/depression, Klonopin PRN (0.5mg). Waiting to stabilize.
