may07
I am new to this site and would like to introduce myself and get some support. I have been on antidepressants for 21 years and have struggled with them and trying to go off of them. I have always followed doctors advice and it has hurt me. Currently I tapered down to 10 mg of celexa very fast over the last year after many updoses to 80mg at one time. I have been at 10mg for 9 weeks and having horrible adrenaline all day and night. This began a few years ago and is getting worse. I was also directed to stop temazepam 15mg 9 days ago after 2 months of use. I didn't know it was so addictive otherwise I would not have taken it. I have had sporatic benzo use over the years but nothing more than small doses used infrequently about 4 times in 20 years. I do not know what to do now. I have been experiencing withdrawal symptoms for so long, should I hold at 10mg and wait for stabilization or up dose the celexa. I am struggling quite a bit and can't write as much as I would like. Any support would be appreciated. mustangwoman
Welcome May! I'm sorry that you have been having such a difficult time. Please know that you are not alone and there are people here who have experienced what you are going through. The support is very helpful. I wish I had known 13 years ago, what I do now about antidepressants, before I took the first one. But, here we are, and this is the best place to be for someone who is in withdrawal, or for someone who is thinking about lowering or tapering from their antidepressants. Stick around the info and people are amazing. Do you have a support system where you are? If you cannot read the info or post, do you have someone that can help you while you are having a difficult time doing it yourself? zoloft 2004-08 tapered too fast(2 weeks) Luvox 5/08 100 mg 07/10 40mg via small reductions, 08/10 39mg, 09/10 38mg, 10/10 37mg, 11/10 36mg,2/11 35mg, 5/11 34mg, 8/11 33mg, 11/11 32mg, 01/12 31mg, 03/12 30mg, 4/12 29mg, 5/12 28 mg, 8/12 27 mg, 11/12 26 mg, 1/13 25 mg, 3/13 24 mg, 4/13 23 mg,6/13 22 mg, 7/13 21 mg, 8/13 20mg, 10/13 19 mg, 11/13 18 mg, 12/13 17 mg, 1/14 16 mg, 3/14 13 mg, 9/14 10.9 mg, 1/15 10 mg, 3/15 9 mg, 5/15 8 mg. 11/15 7.12 mg. 4/16 5 mg, 6/16 4.5 mg, 9/16 4.2 mg, 1/17 3.48 mg, 2/17 3.2 mg, 4/17 2.2 mg, 5/17 2.0 mg, 6/17 1.74 mg, 7/17 1.58 mg, 9/17 1.27 mg, 11/17 1.0 mg, 1/18 0.79 mg Link to comment
may07
I don't have much support and am alone most of the time. I feel better now as I tend to feel better in the evenings and night. Thanks so much for your concern. I have been very confused and have read a lot from this site. It has helped so much! I never would have taken antidepressants for so long if I knew either. Was told withdrawals mean I have to be on them for life. Not sure if I should hold at 10mg or up dose. Tried the naturopathic route in the spring because I didn't know what was going on. Ended up bedridden until I stopped all supplements. Diagnosed with hypothyroid in April 2016 and put on 0.05mg Synthroid. Don't know if it helped and was changed to Natural thyroid last week. But after 4 days my adrenaline was so high I stopped. Now not sure what to do. may07
Scallywag, I started on clonazepam 0.25mg the beginning of October 2016 for about 3 weeks. It didn't help so I stopped. Then prescribed temazepam 15mg for about 2 months. Started emptying out half of capsule the end of December 2016 when told how addictive these medications were. Did this for two weeks and stopped Jan. 9 2017. Told to do this by doctor and only gave me a 2 week refill. Started 2016 on 40 mg of celexa after dropping from 60 mg a month before. Tapered to 30 mg March 2016 but was told by pharmacist and medical doctor that my withdrawal symptoms were serotonin syndrome. C/T for 7 weeks until I ended up in emergency room and told to go back on celexa 10mg. Saw my psychiatrist and he upped my dose to 15mg for 3 weeks then 20 mg for 3 weeks. Then he put me back down to 15mg in October 2016 and then 10 mg the beginning of November 2016. I have been holding since. Hoping to stabilize. Now that I see this in writing I am so scared. may07
Hi Lex, I am so glad I found this site. It is hard to name all the symptoms I have had and still have because I have been so out of it mentally but I will try my best. I started having symptoms and not feeling right for about 6 years since all the C/Ts and changes but I really got bad January 2016. I couldn't handle my life anymore and crashed. Put on disability from work and quickly became unable to care for myself. Symptoms include: -extreme fatigue -constant dizziness -extreme adrenaline surges that last all day and night -insomnia -heavy body and limbs -muscle tension and pain -twitching muscles -depression -little appetite -nausea -can't handle tv, computer, light -head very congested - what I call "brain yawns". Like yawning but only in the brain -can't stand for long or sit -hypersensitive to noise, stress -sinus and chest congestion with wheezing -hands and feet go numb -body and brain chills -heat and cold intolerance -flushed face -cold hands and feet -poor memory -hard time thinking and lose thought process -lost 50 pounds in 8 months -anxiety -extreme urge to urinate and then trouble getting the urine out -bowels have lost sensitivity and I have trouble eliminating them fully (caused hemmoriods) -fever symptoms -yeast infections -dehydrated and can't keep liquids in me -hair falling out -swollen face and eyes -dry and irritated eyes with tearing and discharge -flacking skin -thin skin I am sure there are a few I am missing but this list is so long as it is. The symptoms have stayed with each dose change but have varied in severity. Symptoms lessened with each dose drop and now with the 10mg hold. I think I get windows and waves. I also feel symptoms lessen in the evening until early morning. I also forgot that I was on Abilify April and May 2016. C/T off. Can't remember dose at this time. I know it was increased once and medical doctor recommended I stop taking it as it was not helping and probably making me worse. It is so hard when I get windows of realization of what has happened to me. I was mostly bed ridden and barely able to understand what was going on. Now I want stability and a very gradual taper off celexa. Thanks for caring and your support currently taking: 10 mg Celexa Celexa, 40 mg started 2009, c/t off, trial of 150 mg Zoloft and others, return to Celexa at 40 mg; 2010-2014: 60mg or 80 mg; 2015-2016, dropped to 40 mg, then tapered to 30 mg, C/T to 0 from 30 mg March 2016. LexAnger
Hi May07, thank you for the quick info! What a shame they put you through so much suffering! Giving the multiple changes over long time period, it will be difficult to retro guess what was going on back then. I would think the most Important thing is to find out a strategy for the current time being. You mentioned the symptoms lessened with each dose drop, which makes me think you are not only going through WD, more like I n the mix of WD and side effects (possibly drug reaction from multiple dose increases). Your symptoms are also a mix of typical WD and reaction. For example, I only heard swollen face and eyes from drug reaction (and a sure symptom for myself from severe drug reaction), and many others are typical WD symptoms. Do you find any subset / particular symptoms got better with dose reduction or all of them follow the same trend? before Our Mods come along providing their thoughts and advice, I feel it will help if you can sort out more things with some pattern if you observed any so we can try to figure out a direction first ( up or down) before a more detailed tapering schedule. One other thing, you are not alone, I'm bed ridden these days too, and have been on the road for many years. One thing I learned from he journey is, regardless how horrible and hopeless we feel, it will pass eventually and we will heal, only it takes very long time and incredible patience. may07
Hi Lex, The symptoms seem to follow the same trend with different levels of intensity. I don't think any have gone away. I agree with the side effects/reaction issue. In the past after C/T I had just withdrawal symptoms ( brain zaps, restless legs, crying spells, brain fog). I have only had restless legs this time and it has passed. My psychiatrist, medical doctor, and therapist all want me off the celexa. However, they also want me to try another psych med. I think each time, 2 that I can remember, that I C/T I wasn't this bad and may have been able to stay off of them. My doctors know that the high doses affected me negatively. I was only ever stable on antidepressants at low doses. The symptoms I experience now, and there are more than I have listed, started with high dose of Zoloft and then high doses of celexa. I never regained my stability since and have slowly been getting worse until the complete breakdown in January 2016. I also have been diagnosed hypothyroid, have a constant infection, high acid in my body, and high morning cortisol. Thanks again for the wisdom and support currently taking: 10 mg Celexa Celexa, 40 mg started 2009, c/t off, trial of 150 mg Zoloft and others, return to Celexa at 40 mg; 2010-2014: 60mg or 80 mg; 2015-2016, dropped to 40 mg, then tapered to 30 mg, C/T to 0 from 30 mg March 2016. LexAnger
Wow, that confirms my guess! I went through a very similar journey. Before I had drug reaction from dose increases, my WD was totally different and livable, as they are mainly physical pains and discomfort. Ever since the drug reaction, I have been in desparate situation constantly with many debilitating mental symptoms and new disabling physical symptoms. You may want to wait for more experienced mods and members chimp in for more comprehensive information and their thoughts and advice about a tapering plan ( typically it is suggested for 10% cut every 4-6 weeks for normal situation). I wonder your own thoughts as you already noticed the effects of dose reduction. may07
Lex, I am very scared of the "constantly with many debilitating mental symptoms and new disabling physical symptoms". My hope is to stabilize at a proper dose before even trying a very slow taper. I am not sure if this is the right plan for me and hope to get more info from more experienced mods and members like you mentioned. I am grateful for your experiences and knowledge. may07
Hello everyone, I would also like to add to my already long list of medication issues, that I have C/T off of synthroid 0.05mg over a month ago. I was on it for about 7 months. It did not help and I was having more symptoms towards the end. I tried 30mg of Natural Thyroid for 4 days last week but experienced worse adrenaline ( my worst symptom) and was directed to stop it by my new intergrative medical doctor. I think I feel better without any thyroid medication and my body temperature is better. I have read posts here that talk about hypothyroid and withdrawals. I think that I would not take anymore thyroid medication until I am stable and retest. I feel like it is probably a symptom of withdrawal. Any input would be appreciated. mustangwoman
Hi May. I wouldn't think about withdrawal until you are stable. Before I started luvox when I was on zoloft it affected my thyroid significantly to the point that I became hypothyroid and began synthroid, the interesting part came when I withdrew from zoloft my thyroid function improved as a result, leaving me in a hyperthyroid state (due to taking the synthroid and had to discontinue), which can make you feel in a constant state of panic to say the least. I later read than many ssris can affect thyroid function like that. I don't know if that is what happened to you. It was an eye opening experience for me, as I've been in the medical field for 10 years and had never seen anything like it. I had never seen anything like what I saw with ssri's period though. I think many of us haven't. Hang in there. I hope you get some answers soon. may07
Thanks mustangwoman, My gut tells me that the hypothyroid is caused by antidepressant use. I get more indepth test results in a couple days. They could change my mind, who knows. I have some hope in this new but expensive doctor. He may just end up trying to sell me expensive, ineffective, or hurtful treatments and supplements. He does acknowledge these medications as harmful. He recommended a book that states that mental health issues are not caused by medication deficiencies. I definately had no idea about the horrors of these medications. What really hurts is that I have worked 26 years with children and have seen them constantly put on these horrible medications. Usually handfuls and usually more than any adult could take. Now that I know, I feel so guilty! I will hang in there and appreciate the HUGS! currently taking: 10 mg Celexa Celexa, 40 mg started 2009, c/t off, trial of 150 mg Zoloft and others, return to Celexa at 40 mg; 2010-2014: 60mg or 80 mg; 2015-2016, dropped to 40 mg, then tapered to 30 mg, C/T to 0 from 30 mg March 2016. may07
Hello everyone, I am still wondering about what I should do about holding or up dosing the 10mg of celexa I am currently taking 10mg for 10 weeks. I am also wondering if I am having withdrawal from the temazepam. 3 days ago I started having severe sweating while sleeping, which is unusual for me as I have stopped sweating months ago. I also woke this morning with bad diarrhea and almost didn't make it to the bathroom. I had nighmares for 2 nights at the beginning of the week but they have stopped. I have less adrenaline today and the episodes have gone away quicker. I do notice that I feel better towards the end of the week but symptoms usually increase Sundays and Mondays. Weird. Information and support would be greatly appreciated. Your doctor(s) should read the prescribing information in the Physician's Desk Reference; they'll find that almost every single psychotropic drug has cautions AGAINST suddenly stopping. I'm sorry that you have been so poorly taken care of. It looks as if Abilify and the benzos were added to "treat" your symptoms from the Celexa c/t earlier in 2016. You've had many dose changes, starts and stops in the last year. Your recent c/t off temazepam and the bouncing around in dose last fall could result in you having symptoms for a while. Your best bet now is to be very cautious with changes -- be gentle with your CNS (central nervous system)! You are almost certainly experiencing withdrawal from the temazepam discontinuation. I don't know anything about benzodiazepine drugs except how to spell the name. Have you asked Shep and Skeeter about reinstating temazepam in the Members-only Benzo forum? may07
Thanks so much for your reply! You definitely nailed my history. I am so scared about all of this but the temazepam has me really worried. I will stick to the celexa 10mg ( do you agree?) and post in the benzo forum. I spoke to the psychiatrist, pharmacist, and psychologist and they all said to stop the temazepam this way. The psychologist even said the Physician's Desk Reference said I had 6 months before I would experience withdrawal. I can't believe this nightmare. may07
Hello, Does anyone have some information/experiences with the best time to take celexa. I am currently trying to stabilize at 10mg after a very fast taper and some updosing. I currently take my dose daily at 10pm due to trying to keep a stable time as my wake up times still vary. I thought dosing at this time was helping with sleep but recently I have begun to feel more alert a couple hours later. If taking my dose would be better in the morning, how would I switch times without setting off even more horrible withdrawal symptoms? Any support/info would be appreciated. Moderator Emeritus scallywag Posted January 23, 2017 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted January 23, 2017 Checking the Health Canada drug database, I see that 10 mg Celexa has been approved but hasn't yet been marketed. It appears that generic versions of citalopram are available. Because you are dealing with symptoms right now, I suggest staying with what you've got -- 20 mg tablets of the brand name Celexa. The difference between one half of the tablet and the other is probably very small as a percentage of the overall dose but It's possible that the variation in dose *may* be causing some symptoms. Are you getting the medications from a retail "bricks-and-mortar" pharmacy? If yes, I'd go in and ask for their advice about how to ensure consistent dosing when taking half tablets. If no, call the online pharmacy and ask their advice. ... bottom line: make the pharmacists earn their dispensing fee. This is not medical advice. may07
SW, thanks for the info. I have been noticing some symptoms improving slightly but now I feel more aware of the symptoms and changes. Is this "normal" in stabilizing. I am feeling more tired and it is hard. may07
Hello, I have decided to change my dose by 30 minutes everyday instead of an hour. I hope this helps with less dysregulation to my already very sensitive CNS. I have noticed a slight improvement in my ability to sleep. I fall asleep about an hour earlier but do still have to get up once before I do fall asleep. My wake up time is better and more consistent now. I spoke to the pharmacist and she reported 95% accuracy with pills that are cut in half. I also found a pharmacy that has 100 tablets of 10mg celexa. I only get a months supply at a time so when I get my new prescription this Thursday I will get the 10 mg tablets. According to my symptoms log, I have been having slight but steady improvements. mustangwoman
I'm doing pretty good. I have been doing a snail crawl withdrawal after being burnt twice, but I didn't know at the time that withdrawal was the problem. powerback
Hi may07 I am like yourself ,new here but reading the posts here for long time.your at the the best possible place for your recovery .What ever your symptoms ,come here and u will find the help . From personal experience with my doctor I've given up on him ,it's the system they have learned from .I only go to him now to tell him the other ways I've learned to understand my story and tell him these drugs are useless . I'm empowered since taking the power away from the doctor. I put all my energy in me and helping me ,not into getting my doctor to understand my pain and what I'm going thru .It's worked . I do realise it's annoying were not understud but my experience has been I wasted my time talking to anyone outside of here Be patient with yourself and take good care of yourself. may07
Mustangwoman, Glad to hear you are doing pretty good. It inspires me for when I will start to taper. A snails crawl seems to be the safest since I have been burned as well. My improvements are at a snails crawl as well but I am so grateful for them. Bless you and everyone going through this. may07
Hi Powerback, Thanks so much for your support. I totally agree with this site being the place for knowledge and support. I really liked how you explained taking your " power back" and helping yourself. Because I did not know the truth and was in such bad shape I have allowed myself to be hurt beyond belief. But this is my time to take back my power. I have to continue to deal with the doctors because I am on disability from my job and they fill out the paperwork. I focus on getting what I need and ignoring what doesn't help. It is still hard to process the harm they did and get the help I do need from them. I have to play the system for my best interests. Being patient and taking good care of myself is the best medicine. Thank you. Welcome to SA Powerback and may you be blessed with the support and healing we all need and deserve. currently taking: 10 mg Celexa Celexa, 40 mg started 2009, c/t off, trial of 150 mg Zoloft and others, return to Celexa at 40 mg; 2010-2014: 60mg or 80 mg; 2015-2016, dropped to 40 mg, then tapered to 30 mg, C/T to 0 from 30 mg March 2016. may07
Hello everyone, Really struggling with the idea of updosing my celexa. powerback
Exactly mayo do what u need to for yourself with them.I agree with u about the harm we feel that has happened to us,it has eased with time for me. The pain we can feel when no one believes us or rejects our experience and says go back to your doctor is horrible . It took a lot of pain and work for me to finally give up on the system I was brought up with.( Very sick as a kid) We shouldn't neglect our harm or pain but I think we have too find other ways to deal with it and process it . Take care and keep your power Alcohol free since February 2015 1MG diazepam 4.5MG PROZAC. Link to comment
