j1290: gets off the Wellbutrin and on with life!

DAY 6  3/10 Headache, little anxiety

I feel like I'm starting to get this tapering thing down.  Today was a bumpy day last month, and tomorrow Day 7 the most challenging of them all, so I'm being proactive and extremely careful in managing what I can moodwise etc.  I'm pulling out all the stops with no stressors, watching calm movies to keep me out of the anxiety zone, and very small fractions of headache and blood pressure pills to make things easier, plus wearing my headache hat today.   I'm trying to keep things mellow so they don't steamroll into something bigger on all fronts.   As usual the really tricky part last month was the overnight portion, past 11 pm, when the anxiety kicks in etc, so I'm trying to head that off.   We'll see how it goes, but so far so good.

Thank goodness, last night was not bad at all.  After those wild vivid dreams I had on the night of Day 4, I didn't have much more than some slight anxiety on wakeup, and I took a few naps with no vividness either.  Getting a little better each day, as the ol' brain rebuilds whatever it does.  Had some slight, very mild emotionality today, that looks to be almost precisely at the same time as last month.  How does that even work?

Tomorrow is scheduled to be messy, so I'm trying not to worry about it, I got through it last time and will this time as well.   I'm 30% done with this cut, I'm so glad.  Only 10 more days till I'm through the hardest part, and I could say the first 11 days are the worst, and I've only got 5 more days till I"m through that.   I've never monitored my feelings and body so closely, and I can't wait to not have to worry about this for a while.  I'm prepared to be crushed but at least at this moment I'm optomistic that being extremely careful and managing things to be the least disturbing will pay off when trying to sleep.  I sure wouldn't complain a bit.   I really feel pretty OK at the moment, not unsettled or frustrated, so it's a good spot going into the overnight tussle.  I feel like I'm in a UFC match all day long with WD symptoms, and every hour is a new type of attack.  Sometimes it's emotional, so I counter that, then headachey, so I handle that, and so on.   I'm keeping it moving, super grateful to finish out each day.

I was thinking maybe I could do more cuts this year, but maybe I should take that long break.  Any thoughts?

EDIT:  Time to update my AD themed music.  This one is Escitalopram, reminds me of 80's movies.  Pretty cool.

I think you're so right.  Sometimes the symptoms have the upper hand and I'm just along for the ride, but at the moment I have a vote and can use some strategies to keep myself grounded.   I'm going to manage the hell out of these going into my long hold.   Just like migraines or anxiety, the faster I move to preventing them from escalating the better.

It's so freaking nice to feel not anxious, I don't want to leave the house and mess up my vibe 😆😎  How's things down under?

I remember when I first felt this. I think we talked about it actually. It felt really strange to me to not be anxious for the first time in my life. I’m still getting used to it. Even with the Benzo taper which is notorious for causing severe anxiety my anxiety has still been pretty good. Enjoy it man! This is the new you!

Not gonna lie this taper is hard. But it is still manageable and I doubled my speed with not too many issues. I’m holding for a couple of days as I have a function/party/art exhibition I’m going to Saturday and want to be ok for that. Also doing therapy with my partner Cherie. It’s hard too but it’s also good. We’ll either end up in a good place or go our seperate ways knowing we tried.

it’s raining today but starting to warm up finally. Just super keen to get off these benzos really. I feel more urgency than I have in the past. Having some intolerable side effects from being on them so need off!!!

Otherwise just one day at a time. One day at a time.

stay well mate

Oh man, so evocative!!!! Ha, recent bout with a bad generic definitely went to UFC levels. Breaks are always a good idea! Even though the doing nothing part of a hold sometimes takes almost too much patience to get through.

This is good to hear. Can't be easy, but also you're putting in the effort and sorting things out. Love that no matter which way things go, you're set knowing you did what you could. Can't believe you're tapering a benzo through this while also parenting, my friend. Superman down in Australia, for real.

Especially as co-pays rise for these suckers, I'm so itching to hurry it up. Thank god for this site, cause so many psychiatrists and GPs keep saying, "People cold turkey these all the time" and it's good to know I'm not alone in needing to win this race through being sloooooooooooow and steady. Fingers crossed my still-supervised, fresh out of school new psychiatrist starts to see that it's the best way to handle these things (and sometimes the side effects are worse than what they're supposed to be treating, so it's good to have a light hand when doling them out).

Pronouns: they/them/theirs

Started on Prozac in early 2000s to treat cPTSD, been on various cocktails ever since.

2002-2004, 2017-2022: Buspar, tapered down to 0

2016-present: 100mg Seroquel for sleep -> May 2023: 90mg -> June 2023: 81mg -> September 2023: 72mg -> switched to brand name, much too strong, down to 60mg -> October 2023: 54mg -> November 2023: 50mg -> January 2024: 45mg -> April 2024: 40.5mg

2016-Present: 100mg Wellbutrin SR -> January 2023: 75mg IR (37.5mg 2x a day) -> February 2023 (33.75mg 2x a day) -> July 2023 (30.37mg 2x a day) -> August 2023: 27.33mg 2x a day

2018-present: 25mg Pristiq

2015-present: 600mg Gabapentin (200mg 3x a day) -> December 2022: 300mg Gabapentin (100mg 3x a day) per GP's recommendation after side effects -> March 2023: 90mg 3x a day (switched to liquid suspension) -> April 2023: 81mg 3x a day -> September 2023: bad generic, switched back to homemade liquid; too strong after bad generic, down to 70mg 3x a day, still bad. Adjusted slowly till at 60mg 3x a day, much better. Long hold till -> December 2023: 54mg, still feels too high after November Seroquel switch from brand name to generic, doc recommended 50mg which feels better -> January 2024: When Wellbutrin went down, Gabapentin started putting me to sleep, went down to 45mg, then 41mg to stay awake, so far so good -> February 2024: 36mg, still too high, 34mg -> March 2024: 31mg, STILL too high, 30mg

Supplements: Multivitamin w/magnesium, probiotics, digestive enzymes, anti-viral nitric oxide nose spray as needed

It certainly sounds like your attitude’s in the right place John! So great to hear you’re so positive despite feeling a little punch drunk. UFC is a great analogy. You never know where the next hit is coming from and in a flash you can find yourself tied up in knots and helpless.

DAY 7 3/10 headachey, v. slight emotionality

I am managing the crap out of this taper, and I'm so proud to have made it through last night and today successfully and relatively comfortably.   I was getting a lot of nighttime anxiety last month around this time, which led to noticeably bumpy days, so I've been doing my best to avoid that and mostly succeeded.  I've really just focused on putting myself at ease the last few days so I can get past this.   My guess is it has to do with the body recalibrating to the new level of medicine, but Day 4-7 are the most challenging overall, and I'm so glad to have this day almost in the rearview mirror.   My next short term goal is to make it through Day 11, as there are still a lot of challenges to overcome.  Once I hit Day 16 things are going to be less intense, and I can start breathing a little easier knowing I'm over the worst of it.

Had a little bit of emotionality today, but tomorrow is when that should start in earnest.  It always seems like it should be easier to endure than it actually is.   I'm going to continue to keep on top of the emotional triggers and I believe that will help keep things on a more even keel, or at least couldn't hurt.  My suspicion is that eliminating videogames before bedtime has had a positive impact.  I think they got me too riled up on sensitive days.

I'm rounding percentages because I can't be bothered, so I'm 35% done with this cut, 4 more days till I'm out of the thick of it, and 9 more days till I'm home free.    9 days is nothing but each one feels like a month 😆  Whatevs, chin up, shoulders square and I'll think of England 😂🙌👍

You're never off base, Bupropion Buddy!   😎  I think without exaggeration my whole experience tapering Bup has felt like a cage match.  I have to think being maxed out on that stuff for so many years complicated things, but fortunately that's in the past and I'm moving forward to a med-free life.  You're right, despite 'normalizing' the daily grind it has been terrifying at times and I have definitely been in a cage.  I may not like the timeline, but I am convinced that everything will begin settling down.  Give me a month or two from now and I think I'll be feeling much better and less rough around the edges.

haha I had to look up evocative, what a cool word!   UFC levels are NOT where it's at, Jack.  That's a great point about doing nothing, it's not my comfort zone to try and be zen about a situation that I only have a little bit of control over.   Guess it's just another phase of the battle.

I'm trying, man.  Sometimes the line between being positive and conning myself is very blurry indeed 😂😂😂😂 but I have been very proactive and just taking that ownership and control helps set the tone.  Sometimes I'm just zonked by the symptoms and can only hang on, but 'till that happens I'll fight the good fight however I can.

This is so true, especially when the emotional stuff comes on strong.  Carefully monitoring what I read and watch has really helped this month.   Feeling a bit of a window at the moment and it's so appreciated.

DAY 8  3/10 anxiety, emot. lability, head activated, slight headache, elevated mood

Comparison:

June 8    3/10 head issues, not emotional,

June 30  3/10 some emotional stuff, anxiety, stuffy head feeling

July 21    3/10  irritability, head issues

Aug. 11    3/10 brain crampy, head activated, anxiety

Sept. 1    3/10 emotional lability, irritable, elevated mood, headachey

Sept. 22  3/10 anxiety, emot. lability, head activated, slight headache, elevated mood

My observation is that around the first 11 days after a cut are getting a little sharper, guessing it might be due to the reduced dose increasing sensitivity and shorter hold times, who knows.  After day 11 things seem to be getting easier as I adapt to the new WD Normal.   Honestly I'd rather pass on the whole waves and windows thing, but my hunch is that's exactly what I'm in for as I do my long hold.   I'm going to do my best not to worry about it before it happens, the anticipation is always worse than the event.   I'll figure it out, you buy the ticket and you ride the ride 😎😂👍🎢

After 11pm or so things got anxious again last night.  Seems like when the sensitized brain gets tired it flips a switch.  Kinda makes sense though because I've always had really vivid dreams and nightmares while taking Bup, come think of it.  It's all going to calm down with time.

Had a bout of scorching anxiety tonight, and talked myself through it and I'll address the source tomorrow.  Can't wait to be on the other side of that.

Also, I have the 3 most intense days starting tomorrow, so I'm going to just keep looking at my feet and putting one foot in front of the other.  I am going to be so happy to get to day 16 of this cut, the last extra bumpy day, you don't even know.  So by the numbers, I'm 40% done overall.  3 extra bumpy days ahead of me, but by this time next week I'm almost out of the woods and on to windows and waves and recharging.  Really looking forward to next Friday.  It's going to be such a relief.

Sometimes it's a huge triumph just getting through the day by putting one foot in front of the other.  It's still moving forward and moving forward gets you closer to the goal.  You've got this!

DAY 9  3/10 sensitive overall

Today has been surprisingly good.   Woke up with that morning anxiety and been a little nervous and sensitive today, but overall not too bad.  Reduced symptoms compared to the last couple months, so that's a great sign, and I think a sign that this cut will be successful.   No vivid dreams and I slept pretty good today.

Tomorrow is scheduled to be 😔😖 but I'll get through it.  Just relieved to get through today and not need headache pills or anything.   Taking stuff like that helps for the minute but I read that it disrupts the CNS that's already sensitized, so better to avoid if I can.

2 more extra bumpy days.   7 more days 'till I should be out of the woods for bumpy days.   45% done with this cut.  Can't wait till next Saturday when I'm feeling more relaxed.

Thanks Stardust, you're so right!  Each day is one day closer to the finish line.   Had a great conversation with a friend of mine today with the brain working in ways that it hasn't for a long time.  I have a lot of opinions about the process, but getting off these things is so worth it.  🙏🙌

DAY 10 3/10 little achey and irritable-y, sensitive

Day 10 has been a 4/10 the last couple months, bumped up to a 3/10 today.  Solid, gradual improvement that I would like to hurry the heck up because I'm impatient.   I was able to engage a bit today due to the lighter symptoms and its been really nice to have a brief window.   Too early to call it but another good sign that this cut will be a success.  Tomorrow is scheduled to be anxiety at night.  I'm going to therapy tomorrow night, maybe I'll get a lot of exercise in earlier in the day so I might be too tired to be anxious?   Couldn't hurt to try.

Did some more reading, I'm convinced my CNS really is sensitized.  I need to do my part to help it relax, do all the stuff the guides tell you to avoid kindling.  I don't think anything will give me the instant relief I want, but I can help the process.  So by the numbers, I have one more extra bumpy day tomorrow, and 6 more bumpy days till I get to the recharging portion of this reduction.   I'm also about 50% done with the taper, so I'm on the downside now.   I'm not getting my hopes up for things to be easier for the next 6 days, I'm overdue for emotionality, but I can do my best to try and continue heading it off at the pass.   Looking forward to next weekend.

Did a lotta exercise, therapy, hung out with a friend.  Feeling pretty good and the heavy symptoms never set in.  Things are looking more and more positive that this cut was a success.  55% done, the bumpiest of bumpy days should be over, and only 5 more difficult days ahead.  So glad to be through this part.

You're doing so well!!!!!!

DAY 12   light 3/10 background headachey, not in your face, forgot about it most of the day

Let's compare:

Day 12-7/4  3/10 barely SFW but needed sumatriptan for headaches

Day 12-7/25  4/10 NSFW scorching headache

Day 12-8/15 3/10 SFW  some brain cramps and anxiety

Day 12-9/5 3/10 SFW a little headachey but overall good

Day 12-9/26 light 3/10 background headachey

That's legit a trend in the right direction.  I consciously didn't stress myself out today, so that didn't hurt my symptoms, but I'm really trying to make it easy on myself this cut.  I actually slept pretty great last night, too.  The next 4 days are usually bumpy, with some emotional stuff, so we'll see what that looks like.  I'm not symptom free but everything is improving.   I think this cut is a win.  So 60% done, and 4 more bumpy days.  Fingers crossed I'm over the worst of it.

I want symptom elimination, not symptom reduction or symptom management.   If I figure out how to do that I'll let you guys know 😆

No nature lately but I’m about to head to the south western part of my state (Victoria) and will go fishing, maybe snorkelling for abalone and crayfish if conditions are good. My son’s coming and we’re visiting my partners feral family so I’ll need to get him out to do some fun stuff. There’s an old volcano caldera nearby that’s a beautiful big nature reserve so will go for walks there. Lots of koalas, echidnas and emus. Usually I’d go and drink wine while I’m there but I’m off the booze so will have to find other fun things to do!

DAY 13  4/10 emotion wave, headachey

Bumpy day but tolerable, got hit with some kind of wave of emotion this afternoon and wound up taking a giant nap.   I'm over due for some kind of deep brain stuff like that, whatever it is you call it.  Somethings brewing for sure.  Uncomfortable but normal and I think it'll continue to improve.  Its gonna take a minute for things to settle, even after holding 75 days I still had plenty far to go so this is a marathon.  65% done, and 3 more extra bumpy days.

I am not a doctor and do not offer any medical advice, only my own experience.  Consult your physician.

2011-2015 tapered off 300MG of Effexor.  Back in the Paxil Progress days.  No rebound.

DAY 14 4/10 headache, lassitude, feeling weird

Overall fine.  I think Day 12 was a window and I secretly hoped it was the new normal.  Took a big nap today and now that it's evening I'm doing better.   2 more bumpy days and I should be out of the thick of it.  70% done with this cut.

This is such a great point.  Maybe I need to lean into this a little more.  A nap seems like such a life hack for tapering, I always feel better afterwards.

Heck yea: "More specifically, when one sleeps, the brain resets itself, removes toxic waste byproducts which may have accumulated throughout the day [2]. This new scientific evidence is important because it demonstrates that sleeping can clear “cobwebs” in the brain and help maintain its normal functioning."

Dang, googling that has me wanting to nap more often. Glad you've been able to sleep and feel better when you wake up! Seems like a good sign that the hold is going well so far.

Side note, as someone who has a lot of lassitude... I wish that meant something more cute. Like, having the attitude of a young lass running through a meadow. I just woke up and my brain isn't online yet. 😂

DAY 15  3/10 headache, lassitude

Headaches, sensitive to light and sound, took a ginormous nap this afternoon.  But did I get emotional symptoms?!?  NO!  Thank heaven 😄  I'll take physical stuff any day over the emotional.  So in that respect, things have improved this cut overall.  70% done, and 1 more day till I'm over the worst of it.  Then hopefully things will gradually improve.

Dang, googling that has me wanting to nap more often

bwahaha!  Me too!  What I took from my skim of the article was that the brain can be repairing itself during sleep, which wouldn't surprise me a bit, considering tapering.

Side note, as someone who has a lot of lassitude... I wish that meant something more cute. Like, having the attitude of a young lass running through a meadow. I just woke up and my brain isn't online yet. 😂

I love the idea of a cuter version of lassitude.  Made me laugh 😂
