Magnesium, nature's calcium channel blocker

Be wary of magnesium glycinate. I'm having tingling neuropathy like symptoms today, shower water is over sensitive. Feels like withdrawal symptoms when I tried to CT paxil. So I guess in some people it can induce withdrawal.

Update 8122017

Zoloft  2004. Effexor 2004-2006. Paxil 20 mg for 2006-2010. Ct 2010, bad effects back on, stable by 2011.  Poopout June 2015. Zoloft with paxil for a while, stopped Zoloft.

Sep 2016 paxil 16.2 mg alone(295 mg pill weight). Started tapering 11/14/2016.

Took off 1 mg pill weight(total pill weight of 20 mg = 365 mg and 16 mg is 295 mg). Went down 1 mg per week of pill weight so down to 291 mg by end of November. Starting getting anxiety issues starting since 12/10/2016. Hoping that a faster taper will help.

12/14/2016 - 15.95 mg (291 mg pill weight)

12/16/2016 -  15.83 mg (289 mg pill weight)

It does help for anxiety though, 5 mg is equal to taking 0.5 mg Ativan or 1 mg diazepam without any tolerance, addiction or withdrawal. It has it uses but uses in moderation at highest tolerated doses.

I made some magnesium chloride oil today. Boiled two cups of water and added 4 tablespoons of ancient minerals mag chloride flakes. It's very dilute since most places recommend 1:1 ratio but I am very sensitive. I tried a little on my belly and legs and torso. I feel a little relaxed but also a bit light headed.

I can't seem to find "mag chloride flakes"  I tried making boiling water with epsom salt nope it made me itchy.  I tried mag malate last feel a bit confused by the response so won't say a word about it as too much was going on with me to tell but the expensive one....40 + $  mag L- threonate.... is a no go for me... for now.  I looked up and read something about it and noripenephrine... can't spell it sorry been away too long I forget ... I think it raises it ... can't be sure now I wrote it in my thread when I was confused and trying to sort it out.... it is in there some place... thumbs down to it for me at least.

Still epsom salts is my golden cure has been for years even citrate gives me the runs... I can only take a little....

peace all

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

Oh My! I must be the most sensitive person ever. I did a Epsom salt bath with 2 cups of Epsom. The next morning I couldn't get out of bed for hours which is unusual for me. I was like drained all day, could barely move. No anxiety at all though. I think I need to do like half a cup or even less. I'm very sensitive to magnesium. The following day I sprayed two sprays of magnesium oil and the next day I had really bad withdrawal symptoms like headaches, sun sensitivity increased, and muscle spasm in my neck. I only had these symptoms like 6 years ago when I tried to stop taking paxil by CT.

The magnesium oil helps a lot with sleep and anxiety but I through out the one I made with 2 cups of water and 4 tablespoons of Mag Chloride and I made a new one with 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of mag chloride. I also think I shouldn't do more than one spray max. I'm very sensitive to this stuff.

Hi!

So far I haven't noticed anything that you mentioned. I'm too sensitive for supplements so the Magnesium Chloride baths are relieving my wide eyed terror. I couldn't be more grateful for this debilitating relief. I may open half a capsule of Mag Glycinate-Chelated, add to water and sip throughout the day but not yet. I need to stabilize first.

Magnesium is a double edged sword while it relieves anxiety it causes increased light and sound sensitivity neuroemotions and heat intolerance. Guess nothing is a magic pill.

It's important to note that this was your experience. Other people have had their own unique challenge with supplementation.  The issue may be the form of magnesium or a filler in the brand you purchased.  Although you are correct in saying "nothing is a magic pill," many people find magnesium supplementation beneficial.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

I wanted to share something I made -- magnesium spray (I will put this in the Magnesium thread also).

Trans-dermal (through-the-skin) magnesium is an *excellent* way to up your magnesium intake. Just about everybody needs more of this essential calming mineral, and those of us in withdrawal, even more so. However, most of us will "hit a wall" with how much magnesium we can ingest before we will get stomach upset.

Epsom salt baths are a good way to increase your magnesium intake.

So is magnesium spray -- here is a way to make the spray, and a way to tell how much magnesium you're spraying.

First of all, you can purchase commercially-made magnesium sprays. You spray the "oil" and rub it into your skin.

However, as with epsom salt baths, they don't tell you how much magnesium you're actually getting.

If you have a goal of a certain amount of magnesium you're trying to get (I'm trying to work up to at least 600 mg a day), you're going to want to know how much you're spraying.

So.

Get some magnesium flakes. They have them at health food stores.

I'm using Better You Magnesium Flakes.

The 2.2 pound package says that it has 120 g of magnesium.

120,000 mg per 2.2 lbs

120,000 mg per ~ 35 oz

~ 3,000 mg of magnesium per ounce

So. Now you measure out an ounce of magnesium flakes.

Dissolve 1 ounce of flakes into a small spray bottle of water. (Online recipes for homemade magnesium sprays say to boil water but I didn't find that necessary -- let the flakes sit covered in the bottle for a bit and they will dissolve.)

The whole spray bottle is about 3,000 mg of magnesium.

I put a piece of masking tape on the side and divided it into sixths.

Each one of those is 500 mg.

Then I divided each of those sections into fifths and made little lines/hash marks.

This is all going to be approximate; it's not like measuring our blasted medications.  ;)

Also, you only have to do all this measuring one time and you can use the bottle again and again.

So -- you now have markings for each 1/30 of the bottle, or approximately 100 mg of magnesium.

I calculated that each 100 mg was about 20 sprays of magnesium.

So I just count out 20 sprays; that way I don't have to squint and look at the little hash marks all the time.

It's salty so don't put it on open wounds.

If I have my act together, I can put 20 sprays (total) on my feet and forearms before I leave for the day.

When it dries, it's not sticky exactly -- just feels like you came out of the ocean without drying off.

Once in a while I find that it tingles/burns slightly -- I'm not sure why but I just wash it off and try again later.

Experiment! I found that my back and stomach have more surface area to spray on, but I did this right

before an exercise class and just felt kind of sticky and uncomfortable.

Let me know if you try this or have any questions!

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

I AM COMPLETELY FREE OF PAXIL! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Forever.

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better

Yoga (gentle to medium); walks; daily breath practice; nutrition, fruits/veg; nature; water; EastEnders (lol); practicing self-compassion, self-care; boundaries; connection; allowing feelings; t r u s t ing that I, too, will heal. (--> may need to be reminded of this.)

Do you know about natural calm it is magnesium and citrate - a powder people love it and it has taken me this long till I could tolerate it.  Previously mag slowed my heart to a crawl my limbs got heavy and I could not get up... now I can take it.. time I guess. or maybe some other supplements got to the level to balance the mag... hard to say.

Natural Calm is loved by a lot of people I took a chance and looked up the person who invented this block buster... peter gillham... guess what he has a withdrawal formula.. not for ADs specifically but other drugs... you can see it here

Vitamin B-5 Function

Pantothenic acid supports your metabolism. It helps your body make fatty acids, so your body can store any excess energy in the form of fat. Vitamin B-5 also helps your body synthesize cholesterol, a compound used to make sex hormones, including estrogen and testosterone. Getting enough vitamin B-5 also nourishes your blood -- it helps you make heme, a component of the protein your red blood cells use to carry oxygen. Though rare, vitamin B-5 deficiency causes a number of symptoms, including headaches and irritability. Low levels of pantothenic acid also damage your nerves, causing tingling in your hands or feet.

Vitamin B-6 Function

Like vitamin B-5, vitamin B-6 supports your metabolism. The nutrient helps you access glucose, the sugar your cells use as fuel to support day-to-day functioning. It also helps your body make new DNA, a process important to new cell growth. Vitamin B-6 aids nerve function by helping your brain produce neurotransmitters -- chemicals needed for brain cell communication. Vitamin B-6 deficiency affects brain function, causing abnormal brain activity, depression and confusion. It also causes abnormal inflammation, leading to sores in and around your mouth. Like vitamin B-5 deficiency, pyridoxine deficiency is relatively rare.

Intake Recommendations

Both men and women need 5 milligrams of vitamin B-5 each day, and 1.3 milligrams of vitamin B-6. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, your vitamin requirements increase to accomodate your child. Pregnant women need 6 milligrams of B-5 and 1.9 milligrams of B-6, while breastfeeding women require 7 and 2 milligrams of vitamins B-5 and B-6, respectively. These figures represent your total vitamin intake, from the foods you eat as well as any dietary supplements you take.

Sources

A well-balanced diet generally provides enough B-5 and B-6 to maintain your health. Fortified cereals provide a rich source of both nutrients -- a half-cup serving of fortified bran cereal, for example, contains 6.67 and 3.6 milligrams of vitamins B-5 and B-6, respectively. Fish, such as salmon, also provide a source of both nutrients. Mushrooms, sunflower seeds and couscous boost your intake of vitamin B-5, while turkey, rice and potatoes contain vitamin B-6

Is there any harm in taking fish oil and magnesium at the same time?

No, just start them one at a time. If you have a negative reaction and you've started both of them at the same time you won't know which is causing the reaction.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

I've seen no mention of just increasing consumption of magnesium rich foods instead of supplements.

Some examples...

https://www.healthaliciousness.com/articles/foods-high-in-magnesium.php

I like the 327 mg in 100 g dark chocolate!

Plus magnesium is in most cereals. e.g., 88 mg per cup of Raisin Bran.

http://www.weightchart.com/nutrition/info-kraft-post-raisin-bran-cereal.aspx

Is this a valid way?

Also, my son is hesitant to take supplements in pill form so this is why I'm asking. I'm also wondering how much he should be taking. I've read some saying start with 25 mg but he gets 50-100 mg already in cereal alone for example.

Confusing the issue is that I've read that milk/dairy (which also contains magnesium) can interfere with its absorption. He also takes omeprazole which I've read can also reduce magnesium.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks.

I have tried magnesium in the past many times without success, from whole tablet to a quarter and then dissolving a quarter in 2L water and sipping, but it seems my guts didn't like it.

Now my GI issues are much better, I am going to attempt it again.  I read there are lots of different types of magnesium, and what I bought first was "chelated manesium".  Is this any good or not?

I must have read you need calcium with the magnesium because the next lot I bought have calcium citrate, calcium phosphate, calcium amino acid chelate, magnesium phosphate, magnesium oxide, zinc amino acids chelate, manganese amino acid chelate, vit. C, Vit. D3, Vit. K1, Folic Acid.

Maybe all these combos are affecting my guts??

Should I toss both these and get a new lot of something else.  I think Alto recommends magnesium citrate, is that right and can you just get that alone?

I have started with epsom salts bath (1/4 cup) last night and will work on that first I think!

In the meantime I am keen to try the magnesium/bicaronate water.  Have I got this right, it is milk of magnesia and carbonated water?

Do you get these things on-line as several chemists in big city don't sell milk of magnesia or magnesium oil, another thing I thought about trying.

I have had gut problems (acidity/reflux/indigestion, etc.) since childhood and just ceased PPI omeprazole after decades on it.  I have only had to take it two days out of last several weeks, though.

From chemistry knowledge I went for magnesium malate after I suspected the citrate was giving me indigestion.  Not 100% sure of that, though.  Just a subjective impression.

No serious recurring indigestion with malate.  I take 2 tabs daily (recommended dose 3 tabs for 106% daily value.).  I also take half a multivit for over 70s, which already contains magnesium and all the other stuff you are reckoned to need.

Do not know if any of this is working, but you press on after reading the theory and sometimes flimsy reports behind it all.

Just now, I am suffering from the most serious throat/chest infection I have had since I was working decades ago.  I caught it from granddaughter/daughter and wife who have all had it.  Even a professional pilots' website has the UK guys reporting this bug.  Strange times we live in.

Best wishes for relief and success!

I  started back on the magnesium tablets I have using 1/4 and crushing it and putting in 2L water and sipping over the last 3 days.  It looks like my guts still doesn't like it!  I have been crook again with belly discomfit, aching chest, aching around my middle and pain on the lower right side of belly.  I also have had an ache around to my back/ribcage on the right side.  I have had that on and off since before gall surgery and I am still not sure if it is digestion causing that or it is osteo.

Anyway, I have further diluted the magnesium with another litre today and finish it and then give it a break again.

I tried probiotics but didn't think they helped much.  I did think digestive enzymes helped, but you can never be sure.  I guess we just have to try them and see!

Hi Cherry!  Sorry about your sleep, I thought mine was bad enough at an average of 6 hours!!  I tried Epsom salts in the past without effect.  Just a few days I tried again, just half a cup of salts and I did notice my legs weren't so achey/painful and I despite waking after 1 hour, I woke several times after that, but was drowsy enough to get back to sleep and got a good 7 hours.

I have been trying my tablet (1/4) again dissolved in 3-4L water sipping over 3 days but my guts doesn't like it.  I will leave it for now and try again later.

In the meantime, I will try and have more baths.

I also have ordered from e-bay magnesium chloride because someone on this site raved about it.  You use it same as epsom salts in the bath.

Also, I saw magnesium oil on u-tube and how to make it myself so I will do that when the flakes arrive.

Let me know how you go with the bath and if it helps.

I was keen to make the magnesium/bicarbonate water but discovered that in Australia Milk of Magnesia is BANNED!  Apparently the UN banned in, so I don't know why you can still get it in the US and UK.  The reason was due to high sulphate.  GSK are going to change the recipe so it can be approved!

Hi all, I'm excited to share that greatly increasing my magnesium during what I know to be my most difficult days

resulted in NO middle-of-the-night rage and suicidality, which have up until now been a very consistent WD symptom for me…

This time around I was absolutely religious with magnesium, taking it in drink form (Natural Calm, divided doses totaling about 500 mg/day), topically (lotion), topically (spray) AND an Epsom salt bath each night. It was a lot to do, but well worth it.

Anyone have trouble with the magnesium making their heart race after taking it? Maybe it goes away after a few days / weeks? I switched from the citrate to the oxide to dimish that, but maybe I should just stick with best Mg possible?

Have been taking Magnesium Malate tablets for several months with no obvious discomforts.

I thought I had indigestion a bit with the chloride, but not 100% certain.

Basic chemistry - If you burn the metal magnesium, the resultant white ash is magnesium oxide.

Add water, you get Magnesium Hydroxide.  This is an old treatment for indigestion (stomach acidity) and also a laxative, I am certain.

Hence, after reading up on here and elsewhere, I take Malate.

Are you in favour of that one Alto, and ors?

Thanks.

Peng, magnesium malate is an absorbable form of magnesium. It's at least as easy to absorb as a citrate formulation and may not cause the digestive issues that citrate does.

Hi all, I'm going to try Magnesium L-Threonate and was wondering if anyone else has had any success with this particular form of magnesium. Apparently it is quite a new form of magnesium and has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Here's the link to the description of this particular supplement on Dr Mercola's website. There's some interesting information about the role of magnesium in the body and different foods that are high in magnesium.

Also, please note that I'm not endorsing this product. I just thought the information might be useful to anyone interested in this topic.

Hello Dwell, yes I tried it but decided to switch to Magnesium Glycinate. I'm also trying to get as much magnesium from my diet as possible.

ikam, magnesium chloride is well-absorbed but a comparatively weak form of magnesium supplementation. If you can't get anything else, it will do.

wintery, taking calcium at the same time as magnesium will cancel out magnesium's relaxing effect, as they compete for the calcium channel. (Unless you have a specific serious medical condition requiring calcium supplementation, you don't need to take calcium.)

Now I'm hearing from sources that mag citrate could make anxiety worse! And I have a ton of it at home already...

Anybody getting anxiety from mag citrate? I'm not sure per say that it is helping me, but I definitely do not want it to harm me!

What is generally considered the best form of magnesium for anxiety?

Main thread: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/14472-shakeyjerr-say-hello/

History: Prozac & Lithium from 1999 to 2003. Ended up back on after 4 months because taking a beta-blocker caused immediate depression (just 2 doses - turned out I didn't even need it; I had no other withdrawal symptoms - I might have ended up med and withdrawal-free otherwise :(). - Switched to Effexor (75mg 3/day) and Seroquel (50mg 3/day) in 2010. - Did a self-taper during 2016. - Developed Discontinuation Syndrome 02/17.

Supplements: Magnesium-Glycinate 400mg split into 4 100mg doses throughout the day. Vitamin C 500mg - once per day. Fish Oil 1360 mg (950 mg Active Omega-3) - twice per day.

From what I've read, magnesium glycinate is the best for form for anxiety.

Yeah, from what a friend who went through anxiety treatment using nutrition and homeopathic means, glycinate and Threonate were the forms she uses to great success. Wish I had known that before I bought $40 worth of Magnesium Citrate...

Only if you over do it.  Too much of a good thing.  Any of the magnesium products will cause anxiety if you take too much.  One of our members was taking daily Epsom salt baths using a large quantity of salt and it was making her very upset.  Once she cut down the problem cleared up.  Start with a small dose and see how you react and then adjust accordingly.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017
