I was using magnesium glycinate, but noticed the bottle I bought recently contains magnesium citrate. Will/does it make a difference?

Some people, including myself, were affected with indigestion (stomach discomfort) with the citrate.

I gave the tablets to my wife and she has no problem with it.  She does have a resilient system, though.

I take magnesium malate, with no serious digestive problems.

Magnesium to make depression drugs obsolete?
A new study completed by researchers at the University of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine finds the mineral magnesium safer, more affordable and more effective than prescription SSRIs.

(Natural News) – More than 350 million people on our planet suffer from depression, and it also has a profound effect on their loved ones. One of the most popular treatments, SSRI antidepressants, is risky, expensive, and not terribly effective. This has prompted some scientists to look for alternatives, and it appears they may have found a good solution in the form of magnesium.

This mineral is vital for many of our body’s functions, including our blood pressure, heart rhythm and bone strength. It also helps fight inflammation in the body. Now, scientists from the University of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine have found promising results after a clinical trial involving the use of over-the-counter magnesium tablets in depressed patients.

In the blocked and randomized crossover trial of 126 adults using outpatient primary care clinics, participants with mild to moderate depression were studied over the course of 12 weeks. Some participants were given 248 milligrams of magnesium each day for the course of six weeks followed by six weeks without it, whereas those in the control group received no treatment for six weeks followed by six weeks of magnesium. All participants were given biweekly assessments of their depression symptoms.

Those who took the elemental magnesium chloride noted clinically significant improvements in anxiety symptoms and measures of depression. On the Patient Health Questionnaire 9, which asks patients nine questions to diagnose and then classify depression, participants scored six points lower on average during their time taking magnesium.

Best of all, they experienced these improvements after just two weeks of taking the magnesium. In addition, patients of all ages and depression types tolerated the supplements well and noted similar levels of effectiveness.

Connection between magnesium and depression has already been established

This appears to support another study in a Croatian psychiatric hospital that discovered that many patients who had attempted suicide suffered from dangerously low levels of magnesium. In fact, depression can be a sign of magnesium deficiency, as can ringing in your ears, muscle cramps, kidney stones, and abnormal heart function.

More than 60 percent of the participants said they planned to use magnesium in the future to manage their depression. Life Extension reports that 68 percent of people in the U.S. are not consuming the recommended daily requirement of this vital mineral, while 19 percent don’t even manage to get half of the amount they need.

Magnesium can be found in fruits like organic oranges, bananas, pineapples, avocados and cherries. You’ll also find it in seafood like mackerel and shrimp, yogurt, dark chocolate, legumes, leafy greens, spirulina and chlorella.

Further research needed

Next, the researchers would like to see if they can get the same results using an even bigger and more diverse population. It is hoped that magnesium and other safe alternatives could eventually replace antidepressants entirely, given their extremely dangerous side effects like seizures, suicidal behavior, and other serious health problems.

It’s hard to imagine why anyone would want to take these dangerous drugs when there are safer choices. Of course, Big Pharma will do their best to make sure the public doesn’t hear about alternatives, with the global market for these drugs expected to exceed $13 billion by the year 2018.

Depression is a serious condition and it’s perfectly understandable for sufferers and those around them to want to find a way to control it, but many who take SSRIs and live to tell the tale regret it. Thankfully, it looks like magnesium can be added to other natural forms of relief like yoga, meditation, exercise, and vitamin D. Why turn to drugs when you can give your body what it needs to heal itself?

The late Henry Schroeder, MD,  of Brattleboro, VT was a world renown mineral science pioneer. Many years ago, he observed that "minerals are the 'spark plugs' of life", emphasizing how important they are for supporting good health and vitality.

Magnesium deficiency and copper toxicity are two highly prevalent mineral imbalances that account for the vast majority of health problems today.

Understanding how stress affects magnesium deficiency helps people make more sense of a variety of health problems than approaching health problems without this vital concept. The same can be said about copper toxicity that is closely related to copper water pipes.

Since excess copper is stored in the brain, psychological problems including ADD, OCD, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and panic attacks can be related to copper toxicity. When copper toxicity is not detected and reduced prior to adolescence, many teen girls are at very high risk for experiencing serious psychological problems as they go through adolescent hormonal changes.

Hi ,

I have a question about magnesium , specifically about taking it in benzo withdrawal. I'm thinking about trying a magnesium supplement because I'm sure I'm deficient. But I have read on benzobuddies that magnesium could cause a withdrawal of its own. So I'm reluctant to start taking it. Some posts where it is mentioned:

http://www.benzobuddies.org/forum/index.php?topic=111556.10

Has anybody had experience with this?

Is it also necessary to taper magnesium like our meds after taking them for a while?

Effexor free for 36 months. Still on 25mg of Solian.

Tapering Xanax and on a dose of 0,15mg , splitted in four doses.

Last reductions:
9/06: 1.875%
7/07: 2.5%

22/07: 1.96%

Hi,

I recently restarted 100 mgs of magnesium glycinate to help with anxiety and to aid sleep. It was helping me significantly for several weeks-making me less anhedonic, less anxious, and helping me to sleep more soundly. The last three nights (I take it around 9 p.m.) it caused insomnia. I also take 250 of Calcium and VItamin D in the morning. I cannot take higher amounts-interferes with sleep.

Any advice? Should I try taking it earlier in the day? Also I understand you should not take magnesium at the same time as calcium but wait several hours between the supplements.

Very dissappointed-I was starting to feel like my former motivated self.

I have read the pages on here about magnesium , but yesterday I was out walking when I bumped into a friend who asked how I was , after telling them about my struggles with withdrawel , they were horrified , but they said that they had come of a antidepressant after 2 years of use ,  they didn't really have much withdrawel but they used magnesium threonate and found very helpful ,  I can't seem to find on here about magnesium threonate has any one tried this form of magnesium and found good results

Magnesium threonate is marketed as a form of magnesium that crosses the brain-blood barrier and that can have positive effects on brain functions such as memory.

Here's a post in the Magnesium topic that discusses the different types of magnesium:

If you search the magnesium topic for the word "threonate", you'll find about 10 other posts that mention magnesium threonate or magnesium-L-threonate.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Thanks scallywag , I have seen many people using mag , but not many people who have said they used threonate , and I was wondering if they found any preference over chelate , or glycinate

I don't know if anyone can answer this..but maybe offer some thoughts or ideas.

I have a really hard time knowing what causes what in terms of symptoms, because I am up and down so often and it just always seems random.  Lately, I have windows during which everything seems easier, then the waves hit and sometimes last a week or so, sometimes just a day or two, and sometimes I'm in and out so quickly I don't know where I am.

So I've been having a lot of pain and finally went to doctors and right now there is still no clarity.   (All this is in my intro thread if anyone's interested.)

Anyway, Dr told me to take mag malate, recommended 1500  mg per day.  I knew I'd better start lower than that, and last night took one 400 mg pill with dinner.  Then, for the first time in months, I couldn't get to sleep.  Torturous ruminating thoughts and intense negativity as I tried to sleep, despite being really really tired.  I struggled with this for months when I first finished my taper, but it has been so much better recently.

I'm wondering if 400 mg of mag could have been the cause.  And maybe I should start with mag oil or something??  I've done epsom salts baths and never noticed any effects, good or bad.  Just not sure what to do.

Between 1988 and 2003 was on many different meds including Tricyclics, MAOIs, SSRIs, SSNRIs, and mood stabilizers, some helped but not for long.

2003 went off MAOIs and started taking Effexor XR at 450 mg.

2012 added buspar to augment the Effexor (cannot recall exact dose) stayed on a few months with little effect.

2013 added Ritalin to augment the Effexor, no noticeable benefits so dropped that too.

2014 lowered dose of Effexor to 300mg and started adding Viibrid with negative effects so dropped Viibrid and went back to 450 of Effexor XR.

2015 added 2 mg Abilify to augment the Effexor, slight benefit at first but no lasting effects.

March 2016 tapered off Abilify in about 2 weeks.

April 2016 began to taper off Effexor XR, from 450 to 0 in about 8 weeks total. Somewhere around 37.5 had a serotonin syndrome episode and had to raise dose again for about a week until I started dropping again.  Now i know the entire taper was way too fast.

May 2016 started taking Lexapro, increased from 5 mg to 10 mg within 10 days.

Tapered off Lexapro starting in September of 2016, dropping at various rates...quicker drops at first, then slowing down to .5 mg drops every 3 weeks or so.  Took last dose on 2/8/17.

Not a doctor, but an effexor victim.

All I can say is that I picked magnesium malate as my favourite Mg source after chloride gave me gastric rumbles/discomfort.

I reckon it is a great source of Mg and I would say the reason for your sleep problems is due to the overwhelming effect of your massive and too rapid reduction of Effexor from 450mg.

I would say, blame the sledgehammer, not the feather.

I f you possibly can, and no one wise tells you otherwise, stick with the malate - at least that is one less thing to change/worry about.

Thanks Peng.  I hear you.

The thing that made me wonder about the mag is that I haven't had that type of trouble sleeping or the intense rumination in a long while.  Though I'm totally aware that extra stress and a few quick waves the last few days could have led to those symptoms too.

I think I'll take another 400  mg pill today, maybe with lunch instead of later in the day, and see how it goes.

Still, if anyone else has any other thoughts I'm open to all.

would anyone recommend this magnesium, it is magnesium l-threonate? :

but it also contains: ascorbyl palmitate

would the extra above ingredient cause any problems? I am super sensitive to anything at the moment

2001 - 2005 prozac,  2001 - 2017 various benzos, mainly diazapem and zanex,  2002 - 2017 olanzapine or seroquel,  2002 -2017 propanolol, 2005 - 2009 venlafaxine 75mg , forced to go cold turkey off venlafaxine as moved Thailand, doctor cut me off and couldn't get it there, severely ill for over 2 years, countered withdrawals with more zanex and seroquel

2014 returned to UK, mainly to get treatment getting off meds

doctor advised to taper seroquel over a few weeks, severely ill and bed bed-bound so reinstated it, 2015 tapered seroquel myself slower over a few months, was off it 2 months and was too ill so went on olanzapine, became zombie and too tired to get out of bed, went back on seroquel, very depressed so went back on venlafaxine, didnt work  so doctor swapped to zoloft became very agitated so back on venlafaxine

June 2016 - felt strong enough to begin tapering again, started what I thought was a slow taper of all meds,  2016 July Not had any alcoholic drink since this date,

2016 October completely off diazepem, 2017 Feb completely off seroquel, 2017 March completely off proponanlol, 2017 April (day before birthday) completely off venlafaxine, OFF ALL MEDS 11/4/2017, was fine for nearly 3 months and then delayed withdrawal hit,

supplements taking: turmeric capsules, NiaCel (nicotinamide riboside), Vit B12 sublingual, Vit B3, Vit B6, Vit B1, apple cider vinegar, manuka umf 10 honey, camu camu powder,  melatonin when needed, epsom salt baths, juices, smoothies,

I'm not able to tolerate oral magnesium. But I've had a similar reaction to you when using topical magnesium at night--either epsom salts or oil or lotion. If I'm going to use it in the evening, I have to do it at least 3-4 hours before bed. Otherwise, I feel as though I've had a dozen cups of coffee and even when I do eventually sleep, it's not very restful. I've found I'm better off using mag during the day.

Remeron for depression. Started at 7.5 mg. in 2005. Gradual increases over 8 years, up to 45 mg. in 2012.Began tapering in June 2013. Went from 45 to 30 mg in the first 3-4 months. Held for a couple of months.Started tapering by 3.75 mg every month or 2, with some longer holding periods. Eventually went down to 3.75 mg. about April 2014. Stopped taking Remeron August 2014. Developed issues with histamine a week after stopping--symptoms reduced through diet and a few supplements. Currently having issues with a few foods. Most of the histamine intolerance has resolved or is at least, in remission.

Thank you.

I've taken it at mid day for the past 2 days and it hasn't affected my sleep at all.

Plan to double the dose today, one in the am and one with lunch.  We'll see...

I have taken 1 spoon of mag cytrate for 2 days. Today i experienced the worst anxiety spike i had in months. Stayed in the bed for the whole day.

I will take it this evening too and see if it was just a coincidence

I'm sorry, didn't write a proper diary and my memory is very bad, can't remember exactly all dosages . Here is a short summary

Drugged since i was 11 yo.

Prescribed several SSRI, neuroleptics, mood stabilizers, benzos.Last prescription was lithium, lamotrigine , 20 mg paroxetine, rivotril

Tapered fast lithium and lamotrigine with little to no symptoms 3 years ago.Since then i'm tapering paroxetine and going through withdrawal syndrome. My tapering was not   stable and that's probably the cause of a lot of acute symptoms i had .

Currently at 0.8 mg of paroxetine

Trying now a micro-taper of 0.02 cuts

15/07/2017 tapered to 0.74  (having waves and windows. Cognitive impairment, akathisia, apathy, anxiety, vision problems, depression, paranoia, obsessive toughts, extreme fatigue,  and some more: all comes in waves except vision problems wich are persistent)

08/09/2017 0.72 mg 28/09/2017 0.70 mg

On day 11 post zero dose, I tried like 10 mg magnesium powder, it shoot me immediately to a coma like status for a good 2 hours falling into sleep mid of day, along with nausea, tension headache, stoned head, chill. Almost like a reaction I usually got from overdosing lexapro when I was still tapering.

its beyond disbelief how a sensitized brain can react to anything.

anothe hard lesson learned, no more play around with any supplement or anything as a whole except for the normal food that I have been eating these years.

I've been taking 800 mg mag malate for 5 days now, with breakfast and lunch.  No negative effects. I think maybe that first day I may have been reacting more to stress than to the mag.  ??

It may actually be helping my joint pan, which has been a lot better this week.  But it could also be a pain window... as the pain gets more or less intense randomly sometimes.

Time will tell, I guess.

Having a panic attack since 3:15 am ongoing now, 6am from this most stupid experiment with magnesium glycinate.

Didnt know panic attack can be more difficult and torturous  than physical pain.

It's the mag talking Lex, nothing more that a bad chemical reaction. It's not going to hurt you, it'll just be scary until it settled down.  Don't fight it, just roll with it and try to ignore it as best you can.  It will probably be pretty well over by the time you get this.

((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Thank you so much Tom for the rescue!

I never had panic or even anxiety before in my whole experience in this battle except for a very brief one back in 2013 when I quickly dropped dose from 10mg to 2mg. Somehow I figured this is something similar when I woke up after 1 hr sleep last night. I tried everything possible not going crazy the whole night walking, cleaning floor, breathing, talking to a friend until 8 am when I eventually could go back to bed and slept for 3 hours. I am still feeling the inner vibration, heart pounding, ice burning and shaky waking up now. This is very different from all my symptoms and makes me feel loosing the whole ground.

im so freaking out that this episode will mess up my healing process in a total unexpected way. I was doing not great since zero but still can manage some basics totally symptom free in this aspect.

The effect of this magnesium glycinate is a lot more than a lexapro overdose. How much damage do you think this can be?  I can't forgive myself by the most stupid thing I did after so many bloody lessons.

thank you so much!

Also, what are the difference between a chemical reaction form like MG, to that from a drug like lexapro?

I read this Form of Mg can cross the brain blood barrier and work directly on the neuros or something. How could it possible to have such a huge reaction to a mineral?

It was not a hypochondriac reaction - it was an overdose - and Brassmonkey indicated he knows several people who have experienced the same thing.  I think I accelerated the effect by rubbing the salts directly onto my skin while simultaneously taking a bath - I thought I'd be able to feel the sedating effect and then wash them off immediately, but it switched from relaxing to anxiety provoking too quickly.

Be wary folks, don't overdo the epsome salts.

On a more optimistic note, it's been about 1-2 days since then and I'm feeling better - so the effects aren't too terrible - I've had MUCH worse paradoxical reactions in withdrawal.

I'll be coming back to epsome salts again for anxiety relief, but I won't be overdoing it again - more epsome salts does not = more sedation.  Instead, it causes agitation, akathesia, and headaches.

I am in total agreement with you osk with my recent experience taking two 10mg magnesium glycinate powder form.  I didn't feel much about the first dose, After the second dose on next day, I felt immediate muscle and overall body relaxation but in less a minute I was thrown into a coma status for two hours followed by a full blow panic for the entire night, the panic lessened some after that but still feel very anxious and shaky feeling like in a total coma too.

i would like to warn others about the first try of this supplement. I np know my system is super sensitized than most others but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Its all all about how sensitized your system became, not mush about the supplement itself.

Glad things have calmed down for you Lex.  If you've never had one before a panic attack can be a pretty frightening thing. Understanding, acceptance and floating are the best way to handle them. Fighting them is the worst thing to do.  Although they feel really bad they won't hurt you so it's best to just let them run their course.

With a very sensitized system there wouldn't be much difference between taking the Mg or the Lex.  Your system is over reacting to the presence of the drug and trying to fight it at all cost.  Probably just about any drug would do the same right now.  I wouldn't expect there to be any damage, it's just shaken up your system for a few days.

Oh you are God sent! Thank you so very much for replying Tom!

I have been terrified all day long thinking about the new and worse hell I just put myself into right after I crawled out of the other one!

You are so right that for an over sensitized CNS, no difference whatsoever the body will react as enemy to all. I wish I learned this concept earlier. I knew I'm extremely sensitive after the roller coaster many years game with lexapro, but thought supplement wont do too much even they can hurt you too. It seems I have to learn each every lesson by the hard way trying out my own! It can save many others unnecessary suffering if we can spread this knowledge out.

It's such a relief to know it won't last long and I can get back to my original baseline after a few days.

I will follow your advice not to fight against it, and pray to the GOD that it will be gone completely soon.

I now know for sure I prefer the physical pain than these freaking mental ones! And my deep respect to everyone fighting against them on a more frequent pattern.

I really want to give you a big hug,  a real one someday!

Lots Love,

Lex

Hi I see you have a super sensitised system I am the same and it is absolutely awful. I react to any meds or supplements I try to take and I tried EMDR therapy and after the session I became really unwell with severe head pain, heightened sensitivity to taste and smells, numb tongue very pale and really unwell since. I'm so fed up with all this. I'm 14 mths of evil Prozac and my system is in chaos. I thought I was helping myself with EMDR but made myself much worse. My EMDR therapist said my symptoms are neurological and I need to see a neurologist but I have already saw 3 so I know it's drug damage. How do you cope with the reacting to things as I have terrible fear of it. Take care

Prozac for 18years with break in 1999 for pregnancy. Started to feel unwell with numerous problems 2015 and think I was in a tolerance to drug. Started to come off May 2016 and by June 2016 wasn't able to tolerate any medications at all. Was on Lansoprazole as and when need from 2001 but haven't had to take and wldnt have been able to take since June 2016

GP gave sertraline 25mg 6/04/17 loss of appetite, gut pain and then following morning whole body shaking and vomiting. Stopped tablet.

Hi Bluebird,

im so sorry you were hit too! I'm not familiar with EMDR but whatever it is, you know the best what it did to you!

Like Brass said, anything foreign can cause great harm to a sensitized system.

when did you had the EMDR and for how many sessions? On top of the new symptoms, how were your original WD symptoms affected?

my panic calmed down mostly since last night except pounding heart on and off. But I woke up this morning with much more severe WD symptoms feeling like I just CTed my original Ssri. I was doing much better pre- magnesium trial.

my fingers crossed for the effects to go away quickly and to get back to my original baseline.

i will visit your thread too.

you take care too.

Hey everyone. Let me give a brief recap of my experience so far.

I found SA about a year and a half ago when I was tapering Celexa. You all guided me through and I’m thankful for that! Last July I went to a new psychiatrist who told me I was experiencing tolerance from the klonopin and I needed to get off it. I was having pseudo dementia, aggression, anger, rage, anxiety, nausea....you name it, I had it. And bad. I was taking 4.5mg of klonopin daily. I started tapering .25mg every week to 2 weeks and of course the poop hit the fan but I was blindly following his advice. Per his taper plan I would have tapered off the klonopin in a few months.

With the massive amount of suffering I was undergoing, he prescribed gabapentin and tapered me up to 1400mg/day.

In October I got pneumonia. Was prescribed levaquin. You know where this is going. Hell on wheels. I started following Kerri Knox protocol to fix the levaquin toxicity and added drs best chelated magnesium and worked my way up to 700mg. Around the same time I decided that I needed to listen to the good folks on benzo buddies and slow down the k taper.

I held the month of December and then scaled back to cutting .125mg every week in January. Poop hit the fan again. Decided to updose, stabilize and start liquid tapering.

Ive been liquid tapering since February and I’m currently taking .636mg of klonopin daily! What a difference from a year ago!

However, in the spring I started having chest pain, pins and needles, blurred vision and felt like my memory was getting bad again. I just chalked it up to withdrawal and tried to manage it. Then my wife started researching and learned that gabapentin can cause both biotin and magnesium deficiencies.

Sooo in august we started tapering off the gabapentin. I finished that taper a week ago and definitely had some withdrawals. I was hoping the magnesium would minimize those but it seems the magnesium is causing more issues.

In august I tried dosing the magnesium 2 hours after the gabapentin to make sure I was getting the full dose of both and I had a bad healing reaction/detox. I scaled back to 400mg and it was still happening. So I went back to dosing at the same time and the reaction stopped.

Knowing this, I tapered down on the magnesium as I tapered the gabapentin to make sure I wasn’t getting a massive overload of magnesium and setting my system off. Wednesday and Thursday I was taking 250mg divided into 3 doses throughout the day and Friday I woke up in hell. Nausea, pins and needles, irritability, anxiety, chest pain, back pain... we immediately scaled back to 150mg. I didn’t sleep at all last night and today is just as bad- in fact the nausea is worse.

Has anyone had this  experience? Should I stick it out at 50mg three times a day or cut it back to 25mg three times a day. It’s seems to take my body a couple days to recognize the magnesium change. Maybe I should just stop taking it? Im nervous I’ll have withdrawal like symptoms from it since I stopped it before and definitely had an increase in my symptoms then.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks

I'm so sorry dadto4boys. Seems we were hit at the same time by this magnesium. I stopped it right away after the second dose on Wednesday, still had some anxious feelings Thursday and Friday but not too bad or constant. Today is super bad again waking up very anxious all time. Also, my original WD symptoms got 10x worse, numb, paralysis, burning, DR, mental shutdown etc.

i never had this before and found it extremely difficult to handle than the physical symptoms even the most severe ones.

i don't know how long this will last, I'm feeling totally doomed now.

I’m sorry you’re going through that lex!

I dropped to 25mg Saturday afternoon and have been doing 25mg three times a day but I feel like I’m getting worse. And in my situation since I was taking it before but not getting it all, I’m not sure what to do. If I stop it, I know I’ll get worse. If I continue it, will it settle down? Will my body adjust? Should I go up to 50mg? This is so confusing but I’m at my wits end with this situation. The restlessness in my legs, the anxiety, depression, bad thoughts, pins and needles and chest discomfort are all unbearable.

Does the body eventually adjust if you’re having a paradoxical reaction ?

Hi , dadto4boys,

i tried to understand your exact MG dosing experience, but still feel missing some major dots for a whole picture.

i know you are still taking K and taperin K too at the same time. But what do you feel the true effects of MG? Can you layout the complete info about Mg along with the symptoms caused by it ( new ones I guess)?

for my case, it's a very obvious and severe reaction to MG, so I believe the best handling is to stop immediately. If your case is more like MG dose issue, like too much, then the handling will be different.

Are re the restless, anxiety, depression, needling bad thoughts only show up after you started Mg?

For this one and only occasion, I took an extra Magnesium Glycinate capsule at bedtime.  i.e. 2 instead of 1 cap, making a daily dose of 4 caps to give total for day of 400mg - said to be 100% RDA on label.

I have found malate and glycinate compounds of the mineral to be benign on my system, and hopefully helpful in withdrawal, so far.  I do tend to believe magnesium would be good for us in withdrawal, or at any other time, really.

However, I had a bad night with restlessness, pressured/tense head, dreams and had to get up to pass urine twice.  (Normally need to get up only once, or even not at all untill 7am.)

This is just for the record.  Any one had this, or can give sound technical reason for such symptoms?

Has anybody had experience with this?

Is it also necessary to taper magnesium like our meds after taking them for a while?

Does anyone know the answer to this? Have people had withdrawal-like issues coming off of magnesium ? Does it need to be tapered? Thanks so much.

12 years on increasing amounts of prozac, then 10 years on increasing amounts of effexor (to 300MG)along with 12 years on Enbrel or Humira and strong anti-inflammatory for arthritis || 2013 I did a 5 month taper off effexor from 300 to zero while adding prozac back and then tapering prozac (this was under a psychmd direction). this was way too fast... then real trouble...so psychMDs put me back on all kinds of new crazy stuff (Latuda (4 months), Trintellix(3 months), Depakote (a week), seroquel (a week), then a cocktail of Xoloft , wellbutrin, trazadone and elavil for 1.5 years) || then MS Diagnosis-extreme amount of brain lesions. told the cause is probably the Humira so taken off that (yes after some law suits there is now some fine print Humira warnings about it causing neurological disease) || 5 month taper off xoloft, wellbutrin, elavil, Trazadone (way too fast) || currently on zero meds since January 2016 including anti-inflammatories || anguishing for so long, just now realizing the root cause is protracted Rx withdraw because of the damage and ptsd of the chemical assault and too fast of a taper twice (I think the first effexor stuff is most significant). This is awful!!! I can't even put into words the waves that hit after not taking any of These so-called medicines at 3 months and 6 months and 9 months and a year . I don't think there is one form that is best for everyone.  It's an individual thing.  I think it may come down to trying and see what works well for you.  See the first post in this topic for lots of good info about the different forms.

Many magnesium supplements contain magnesium oxide, which is not well absorbed and can cause gut issues, so may be best avoided.  Some contain magnesium aspartate, which can also be a problem for some people, so may be best avoided.

Lately I have been using a magnesium chloride cream, which is very gentle.  (It's also inexpensive, which makes me like it even more.)  The cream can help to relax muscles.

Have people had withdrawal-like issues coming off of magnesium ? Does it need to be tapered? Thanks so much.

It's not likely that magnesium needs to be tapered.

If a person takes too much magnesium, they will get stomach upset. They can just take less next time (it can be trial and error to determine the right amount to take), or just stop taking it.

Edited to add: Of course, it wouldn't hurt to taper slowly off magnesium, if you feel that would work best for you. You know your system best.

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

I AM COMPLETELY FREE OF PAXIL! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Forever.

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better
