OKAY, this guy is not a psychiatrist or an MD.  His official title is Masters in Counseling, but he also has diplomas in Orthomolecular Nutrition (a 2 year degree from Canada).  I had an hour long chat with him, and he understands how long it takes to come off psych meds.  He "gets" delayed withdrawal syndrome.  He is willing to provide counseling, nutritional and orthomolecular (functional) support for withdrawal, but he cannot prescribe.

His knowledge is encyclopedic, one of the few practitioners I've seen who connects "mood" and "function" with physical disorder, inflammation, and "insult," whether stress or environmental or illness.

Since he is from Canada and I have not found posted helpful docs for Canada if you see him could you ask him where he trained... maybe there are more like him and I just can't find them a school would be a good start.  Thanks

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

Just tried to contact Dr Bob Johnson in the UK - he has informed me that his clinic is now closed.

He is reachable by email on his website, but does not appear to be taking on patients.

Very sorry to hear that. Did he have any recommendations of other doctors?

In other news, Debra London is now in Ojai, California.

I've updated the list in post #1 accordingly.

ADMIN UPDATE

On 9/14/2017 at 7:36 PM, ChanceLucky said:

I spoke with him today. He was a nice guy, but he recommended that I increase my Celexa dose. He explained that he tries to get people off anti-psychotic drugs but is not worried about harmful long-term effects of antidepressants. I don't know if you want to put any info. about this on page 1 of this thread next to his name. I wouldn't have spent the money I did on him if I'd known this. So it might save other people from this expense if they're looking for help tapering antidepressants.

Dr. Lucire is a very brave psychiatrist who has been criticized for her stand against psychiatric drugs. She believes in very slow tapering. You will need a GP referral to see her and then must ring her for an appointment.

For those of you coming from Belgium or the Benelux area: I have two names of psychiatrists (french speaking) that work in collaboration with british psychiatrist David Healy. They completely and fully acknowledge the existence of protracted SSRI withdrawal syndrome and help people get off psychiatric medications and support while in withdrawal.

If you are interested, please PM me for further information.

2008-2014: various doses of Sertraline between 25-150mg. Put on it initially for very mild anxiety.

Occasionnally Xanax 0.25mg, maybe twice a month.

Summer 2014: much too rapid taper off Sertraline (had no clue about withdrawal) from 25mg to nothing in about two months.

September 2014: last Sertraline pill.
End november 2014: begin WD symptoms (severe headaches, nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness, zaps, head/face/ear pressure, severe debilitating anxiety and insomnia, muscle pains and spasm,..)

Begin february 2015: had developed what I now know is akathisia, arrived at the psych ER severly sleep deprived. Put on a drug regimen consisting of: Sertraline 25mg, Trazolan 100 mg for sleep and Temesta 2,5 when needed.

Had a severe adverse reaction to the Sertraline reinstatement and became acutely suicidal within days. Akathisia and all physical symptoms became worse. Doctor pushed the doses further up until I, in a moment of lucidity, found a psychiatrist who believed me when I said I was in WD.

Mid march 2015: off all psych meds. Suicidal thoughts diminshed greatly, insomnia got somewhat better but akathisia is still relentless and physical symptoms quite debilitating. At least drugs are out of my system and healing can finally commence.

I avoid coffee, alcohol and exercise and am not taking any supplements whatsoever. I am just leaving my body and brain to be.

Just to let people in the uk know..

I emailed David Healy and he said he is happy to see me on the NHS as long as my doctors surgery can get funding. So it looks like he could see anyone in any area of uk as long as doctors surgery can do it.

2000 - sertraline for job anxiety low confidence (17 years old) ..which turned the next 16 years into nightmare!

On/off sertraline severe withdrawals every time. 2014 - felt better as reduced dose of sertraline no more inner restlessness. Doctor rushed off again. Hit severe withdrawal. Lost the little I had in life. Couldn't get stable again on 12.5mg. Was switched to prozac. Had severe reaction to prozac..came off in November 2015 at 6mg as felt more confused and damaged on it..Even more withdrawal ..rage, depression, dyphoria, near constant suicidal ideation, self harm impulses, doom, concrete block in head, unable to do much of anything with this feeling in head..went back on 6mg of sertraline to see if would alleviate anything. It didn't..reduced from December to June 2016 came off at 2.5mg sertraline as was hospitalised for the severe rage, suicidal impulses, and put on 50mg lofepramine which in 2nd week reduced all symptoms but gave insomnia which still have..psych stopped lofepramine cold turkey..no increased withdrawal symptoms new symptoms from lofepramine except persistant insomnia which has as side effect.

Taking Ativan for 8 months for the severe rage self harm impulses 1-3 times a week (mostly 2 times a week) at .5mg. Two months (I'm unsure exactly when the interdose started to happen) ago interdose withdrawal seemed to happen..2 days I think after the Ativan.

Nightmare that could have been avoided!

Dr. Kelly has been extremely supportive. She is respectful and compassionate. I've been seeing her for about a year and a half now. From the beginning she stated that I should probably not have been medicated at 15 and that Cymbalta was a. not doing anything for me and b. probable that it was causing adverse side effects. This was before I was diagnosed with an untreated neck injury that was complicating symptoms. After finding out about my neck, she agreed to hold off on coming off until the issues with my neck improved and started stabilizing. She recommended the initial taper that was too fast. She was prompt in responding to my phone calls addressing the severe withdrawals I was having (even on weekends). She advised me to stop tapering immediately and hold tight while she made some phone calls. Within a few days she had spoken to colleagues and also called Eli Lilly to figure out what was going on and a plan for what to do next. Even though she said she had never been aware of a patient with such severe withdrawals on the taper we were doing, she stated repeatedly that she absolutely believed me. This was the first time any professional has ever properly diagnosed this for me (hence me being on for 17 years even after several attempts to come off).

She repeatedly informed me that no, these were not returning symptoms but were indeed withdrawal. She also stated that no, these symtpoms were not justification for why I needed to be on Cymbalta. She also has told me that these withdrawals mean that it's going to be harder for me to think clearly, and offers support and reminders when I've been feeling at the end of my rope. She has stated multiple times that she thinks it very possible that I do not need to be on medication and is fully supportive of coming off and in fact is recommending that.

After doing more research than I've ever been aware of any psych doing for me as a patient, she recommended the 10% of current dose decrease. She even spoke with a mathematician about how to devise a system using graph paper for all the beads.

I will say that she has prescribed and suggested benzodiazepines while tapering but at this point I have told her no.

I am still in close contact with her, and she tells me that it is possible to be off, but to hang in there as it will take time. She asks for updates and info on what methods I'm finding work. She also recommends and is supportive of holding on the dose until my system has stabilized before decreasing again.

I have to say that I am uncomfortable with having her name and location connected with my account, but I hope that someone will be able to find the information useful. I'm still so aware of stigmas and misinformation of the general public when it comes to antidepressants. Even though so many of us are on them!

from OnaRage:

I sent the following to Dr Malika Burman in Portland, OR:

"I am struggling to get myself back to normal after a lengthy battle with depression but, more importantly, severe antidepressant withdrawal symptoms. I've worked with a number of different doctors and nurse practitioners but have not found a fit that works. You were recommended by the folks on the Surviving Antidepressant website.

If you have time for new patients and feel you can work with someone who is extremely depressed and anxious but more from the antidepressants themselves so wants NO medication, I need help.

Thanks in advance for your consideration."

Her response was as follows:

"I'm sorry but I don't know of that website, also I've never seen anyone who was depressed as a result of antidepressants that wasn't very depressed before they were started.  I'm probably not the best fit, someone else may have more experience with what you are describing.    MB"

So that didn't go so well.  There's one other doc that I'll try.  I'll let you know how it goes but I would consider removing that doc from the list unless you think the way I explained my situation was not clear enough.

and

After receiving her response, I sent her the following:

"Thanks for the response.  One more quick question for you.  Are you familiar with Antidepressant withdrawal syndrome?"

Her unfortunate response was:

"Yes it does not last very long.  MB"

So maybe she shouldn't be on our list anymore.

"Easy, easy - just go easy and you'll finish." - Hawaiian Kapuna

Holding is hard work, holding is a blessing. Give your brain time to heal before you try again.

My suggestions are not medical advice, you are in charge of your own medical choices.

A lifetime of being prescribed antidepressants that caused problems (30 years in total). At age 35 flipped to "bipolar," but was not diagnosed for 5 years. Started my journey in Midwest United States. Crossed the Pacific for love and hope; currently living in Australia.   CT Seroquel 25 mg some time in 2013.   Tapered Reboxetine 4 mg Oct 2013 to Sept 2014 = GONE (3 years on Reboxetine).     Tapered Lithium 900 to 475 MG (alternating with the SNRI) Jan 2014 - Nov 2014, tapered Lithium 475 mg Jan 2015 -  Feb 2016 = GONE (10 years  on Lithium).  Many mistakes in dry cutting dosages were made.

The tedious thread (my intro):  JanCarol ☼ Reboxetine first, then Lithium

The happy thread (my success story):  JanCarol - Undiagnosed  Off all bipolar drugs

I have been psych drug FREE since 1 Feb 2016!

Wow, she wrote on the MIA website although the link has disappeared.   It sure looks like Alto had good reason to believe she belonged on this site.

Hmm, did big pharma get to her or has she been threatened because otherwise, this makes no bleeping sense.  I am sorry for what OnaRage went though in thinking she/he would be seeing a trusted provider.

Alto,

Any way you can diplomatically follow up with her to see what is going on as I am really curious to see what her response would be?  If you can't, I definitely understand.  Obviously, something drastic occurred to cause her to have the change in attitude and go from someone being sympathetic to our cause to sounding like most psychiatrists regarding psych med withdrawal.

I need to find someone in Florida. I want to move back home when I am able. I guess my best bet is to look up integrative doctors and start calling them and arranging to discuss my situation, and to have my dr now speak to them. I don't want to move without a sure thing.

There has to be someone in Florida. I just have to find them.

I have been trouble having finding Dr Kelly'S phone number, she isn't at the numbers I tried. Do you know if her middle initial is a? I would appreciate her phone number and address. I thank you. I have her faculty number, (if she is the right Dr Kelly)- but can't find her office number.

Please check her reviews online.  Nine out of ten reviewers (if I recall correctly) rated her very poorly.

That was on ratemd.com:

https://www.ratemds.com/doctor-ratings/2456646/Dr-Marie%2BC.-Olseth-St.%2BLouis%2BPark-MN.html

On vitals.com, she is rated more highly:

http://www.vitals.com/doctors/Dr_Marie_Olseth.html

But really, with such a small sample size, you really can't tell from this whether this doctor will be good or not.   As a FYI, I have been to doctors who have gotten great ratings with alot more reviews and they were not right for me.   The only thing you can do is give her a try and since psychiatrists who don't understand withdrawal issues are in short supply, there is really nothing to lose.

Drug cocktail 1995 - 2010
Started taper of Adderall, Wellbutrin XL, Remeron, and Doxepin in 2006
Finished taper on June 10, 2010

Temazepam on a PRN basis approximately twice a month - 2014 to 2016

Beginning in 2017 - Consumption increased to about two times per week

April 2017 - Increased to taking it full time for insomnia

Those ratings can be rigged -- one person venting by using different e-mail addresses to register.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have found Will Hall to be helpful as a therapist during the withdrawal process. He works on Skype and is located in Portland. His website is http://willhall.net/.

After being on (over 25) psychiatric meds continuously during a 16 year period, I began in July 2014 to taper off 1mg Klonopin. In September 2014, I came off Brintellix, Trazadone, Zoloft, Proprityline & Hydroxyzine in 2 weeks on my own without knowledge on how to taper properly. I've been off all psych "meds" since 10/2014 and am currently experiencing protracted withdrawal.

Medication history: Vibryd, Wellbutrin, Lithium, Prozac, Xanax, Celexa, Cymbalta, Trileptal, Lamictal, Abilify, Zoloft, Trazadone, Citalopram, Effexor, Seroquel, Klonopin, Paxil, Brintellix, Protriptyline, Lexapro, Pristiq, Buspar, Clonidine, Lorazepam, Notriptyline, Hydroxyzine, Serzone.
