Hi D,

Yes, abilify was killer to withdraw from, and the dystonia and tremors may be permanent side effects I'll have to learn to live with.  Heaven knows what other effects these meds have had on my poor brain.  But, I've learned about neuroplasticity (sp?) on this SA forum.  That means that the brain and central nervous system are capable of miraculous healing.  Let's you and I count on that...at least give it a good long try! :)

Good luck! To both of us. Especially you. I guess you have physical symptoms, you don’t want to play with drugs again. I was having awful mania and  anxiety after my last drug tryout. So, I guess I qualify. I had moments today which would qualify as windows.  I’m even seeing another counselor.  She told me to exercise. She also told me to take Vitamin D. And she pulled out a chapter out of cbt for me to read. What else can they really do?

Hi DBNO.  Good to hear from you and so glad you had some windows.  I try to remember them when I'm in my waves and tell myself they will be back.  Today is such a day.  Good to hear you are seeing a counselor.  Who knows what they can do, really; but studies show they help people with depression.  If one doesn't work after giving him/her a good try, then we can always try another one.  What is the title of the cbt book you are reading?  I read everything I can get my hands on about recovery from ADs and depression.

Shoot. I’m so sorry you’re in a wave. At least you’re making steady progress.  That’s what it seems like.  The counselor, LISW, only gave me a chapter from a classic book describing the types: the worrier, the critic, the victim (me) the perfectionist. I don’t know the name of the book. I took counseling courses in college.  If I could just stop punishing myself, I’d be so much further ahead. Maybe I should get hypnotized. My last counselor when I asked her for suggestions, referred me to a hypnotherapist who didn’t take insurance. LOL My counselor kept telling me to eat right , quit gluten, meditate, exercise and do tapping exercises. She also insisted I needed more medication. Because I have a chemical imbalance.   She also referred me to a natural clinic where they didn’t take your blood or anything, just sold supplements. She was a very nice, caring person, but she had pulled out her entire “ bag of tricks.”  The only person who can help me is moi. I’ll have to talk to myself some more. And not say what I’ve been saying.

I forced myself out today. It wasn’t great.  I used my sleep apnea machine last night and woke up with a tremendous amount of anxiety. I haven’t been using it. It used to make me feel good. It’s been so long since I felt good. I was still able to be periodically happy even after I had the depression. It faded after I took my series of drugs. . I forced myself out all day. Stuff that used to make me so happy. I used to volunteer with people. I went today, and tried to fake it. One of the people who was a person I went to help, hugged me. He seems to know I’m not myself. Not too hard to figure out.   Someone had made a quilt from squares we made in 2013.  I had written in a heart: volunteer, mother, grandmother in my square. I wonder what I ever did to deserve this nightmare. I am wondering if I’m doing enough to help myself. I did go swimming today. My husband prodded me out of the house. Tomorrow will be better.

Hey DBNO - Please give yourself credit for all you are doing, even if it doesn't feel good....you are getting out, volunteering, exercising and doing therapy.  You are doing a lot of good things for yourself.  I know it doesn't feel like it because we aren't feeling well so we don't get that positive feedback we used to get from activities we used to enjoy, but at least you are trying.....that is really an accomplishment when you are feeling they way you are.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Don't worry, it was an honest mistake (I don't know which thread it was on but don't think it was mine).  It is ok to express how you are feeling - it is really hard to feel this level of depression day in and day out.  I know how difficult it is to do anything feeling this way so you should be proud of yourself for trying to do what you can.

It’s really 6 beads. I It’s about 2 mgs.  There’s 100 beads in 37.5. I have not had a great ride here. I’d love to get on your roller coaster. You’re doing better than you think

I agree, waves just make it SO hard to see any semblance of progress. Seems like your reinstatement really helped your anxiety, but not your depression, is that correct? Maybe an updose for a while could give you a break from depression until you are more stable to resume a taper? Just an idea, but I am not the most knowledgeable on such things, I just hate to see people struggle!

Don't beat yourself up over it, this process makes us all a little self-focused,. It is hard to look outside your own head when you constantly are reminded that something is going very wrong in your body.

Yes, but the depression was there before I withdrew.  I got depressed while on the effexor Unfortunately, I dont think it has anything to do with withdrawal.  It hasn’t changed.  It’s pretty consistent.  I’m following advice on here. The anxiety improved. Thanks for your concern.  It’s really sweet. You should feel good about that one. I’m glad you’re on the path back to normalcy.

Hi D:

Just wondered how you were doing?

I haven't been on much. Still fighting this stupid thyroid med trying to get it out of my system.

Take care,

Frogie xx

PREVIOUS medications and discontinuations: Have been on medications since 1996.

Valium, Gabapentin, Lamictal, Prilosec and Zantac from 2000 to 2015 with a fast taper by a psychiatrist.

Liquid Lexapro Nov, 2016 to 31-March, 2019 Lexapro free!!! (total Lexapro taper was 4 years-started with pill form)

---CURRENT MEDICATIONS:Supplements:Milk Thistle, Metamucil, Magnesium Citrate, Vitamin D3, Levothyroxine 25mcg, Vitamin C, Krill oil.

Xanax 1mg 3x day June, 2000 to 19-September, 2020 Went from .150 grams (average weight of 1 Xanax) 3x day to .003 grams 3x day. April 1, 2021 went back on 1mg a day. Started tapering May 19, 2023. July 28, 2023-approximately .87mg. Dr. fast tapered me at the end and realized he messed up. Prescribe it again and I am doing "slower than a turtle" taper.

19-September, 2020 Xanax free!!! (total Xanax taper was 15-1/2 months-1-June, 2019-19-September, 2020)

I am not a medical professional.

The suggestions I make are based on personal experience.

I read a book called “Undoing Depression” by Richard O’connor that had good ideas. I think I may not be responsible or realistic about my situation.  I think you are doing very well, and I’m glad to see the progress your making. Substitute teaching is certainly one way to get your mind off your troubles. If you can do that, it’s pretty impressive. There is no way I could do that. And the kids were good? All I can do is keep trying.

To get support from staff here, we ask each member to open an Introductions topic to discuss their specific situation. They owner of the Introductions topic is encouraged to post questions there, get answers and support from staff and other members, and look back on the Intro topic as a record of their progress. It is like an ongoing, first-person case history.

It's one thing to emphathize with any member here and share your experiences and opinions, but it's another thing to take over someone's Intro topic and make it All About You. This is selfish and disrespectful to the owner of the topic. It also can obscure the owner's need for information and support.

If you do this persistently, you may earn a warning point. Post about your concerns in your own Introductions topic."

Not a good thing to do.

Hi D. Also checking in to see how you are going. It seems that you are doing better with the CBT. How is it progressing ?

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

It really hasn’t gotten off the ground yet.  I tried to tell myself I was doing better.

II got so agitated today I had to take an ativan. I couldn’t stand it.

i got very very worked up, couldn’t sit down and felt like screaming. I don’t think I updosed my effexor enough. It’s like there’s nothing in there.,

I havent taken one in weeks.

I just hope I’m not harshly criticized for my previous posts. I can’t handle it. I get why I may be frustrating others, and that wasn’t my intention. If there is nothing more to be said to me than has already been said, I completely understand. Six beads for six months. Trazadone the same. No ativan in the future. Sorry I wasted the space and time.

Hey my friend,  First take a deep breath.  I can't see anything in your previous posts that that you would be criticised for.  I think that advise is sometimes misinterpreted as criticism...I have done this myself...it is natural especially when suffering.  Perhaps the only issue is the frequent chopping and changing of medication.  What do you want to do going forward? What does your husband think?

I added the ativan because I was in crises this morning. It actually helped me feel a little better today, but I don’t want to get addicted to it. It also was making me more depressed. I am going to cut it out. I have not changed much med since Dec 26. I was worried about something and I couldn’t handle it. My husband thinks the effexor (6 beads) and trazadone may be inhibiting my brain from snapping back. Does that make sense? In a way, I wish I hadn’t added the effexor back. I might be further ahead by now.  I am not having the wd symptoms other people on here are having . I am not having the wave and window pattern. There’s not much relief.  I really don’t think the depression has been effected by the effexor withdrawal because my body had gotten used to it. . I think the anxiety has because it was mostly an anxiety drug. To say my depression is caused by the withdrawal doesn’t make sense to me since it’s been the problem for 8 months. (  But I know my brain is going where are you effexor? ) I really appreciate your concern and care. You seem to be more sure about withdrawal, windows and waves. It applies to your situation which is amazingly difficult. I hope you are doing better. You’ve got youth  and a strong inner being on your side. You certainly are inspiring. i thought the drugs really helped for a long time. My only hope is my brain rebuilds itself. But at my age?  How neuroplasic is it? I don’t think it’s exactly great in the first place at this point. I don’t see people on here talking about just updosing. Much love to and hugs to you too. Thank you so much for answering in such a compassionate way.

Hey Lovey D,  I am not a moderator so the following is just a thought, nothing more.  This may have been discussed already.  Your husband might be right.  Have you considered making your own solution with trazadone and tapering that by 10%.  I'm not familiar with trazedone and making it into a solution.  But it may just be an option.  MuCh Love K

MuCh Love K

I think they want me to stay on it for awhile. I’d love to get off of it.  I think it is icky. In the distant past, around 20 years ago, I just stopped taking it. I told the doctor I didn’t like how it made me feel. He never told me it was an antidepressant. Three years ago I got off it in 3 days. I’m sure that fast taper off effexor and trazadone messed me up forever. I am so irritated that I let these drugs invade my brain. I hate to say it, but I am feeling better today because I took ativan today. Getting hooked on that is a bad idea. I think I was already hooked on it. I’m so mad at myself for taking it today. Hopefully, I’m not hooked in it again. I’d only taken 0.5 mg.

2001 Remeron , Celexa, prozac a week on lithium.

2014 went off effexor and trazadone in 3 weeks.

2014 zoloft (hyper reaction) put on effexor 75 mg. Was stable until 2017

2017  Trazadone 50 mg (June) Effexor to 113 mg (2 weeks) Effexor 150 mg for a month . Took 75 mg until November. . Lithium 10 days, Lamactil 10 day  aug-nov15 ativan

October : Prozac bridge to get off 75 mg of effexor Used 10 mg of prozac. Stopped prozac 3 wk

Dec 6, 7 Upped trazadone from 50 to 100 mg Did it for 3 days Stopped it

Dec 7 , Dec 8 Took prozac again 0.1 , 0.1, 0.6 stopped it

Dec 11 and Dec 12 upped it to 100 again

Dec 15 , 16,17 went back to 50 mg of trazadone

December 18 Began 3 beads of effexor  Dec 25 began 5 beads of effexor take 10 mg of omneprazole daily
