Roxyrich: adverse reaction to prozac

Recommended Posts

I remember this for BOTH of us last year.

In fact JUST last night I was re reading my thread last night, and I believe it was pages 5 and 6 when you also commented on this happening for you in 2016.

I as well was experiencing the same thing at the time and we were trading notes.  Mine was I can't have too much "sugar or carbs" in the afternoon lull, or I became so tired I  "had to " sleep, and then I would have the semi conscious sleep paralysis episodes.

You had commented that you had a yogurt and you thought the sugar had set you off, and that another time after eating a bag of "crisps"  you also had an issue.

You may want to go re read my thread from pages 3 forward to refresh yourself if you want to make notes of what you said to take with the doctor with you.

Courage Brother..

The day is ours..

Colonial and rich, do you all ever experience delayed reactions to food? Personally I haven't found ANY triggers at all. Not even sugar. But it may be affecting me in a more delayed or subtle way.

I feel you, it is tiring dealing with this and also dealing with the fear that anything could make you worse. I keep a diary almost obsessively of things I do and eat and I just want to live. But I guess this is what we have to do

KFC contains MSG.  MSG is a neuro toxin.  MSG is a flavour enhancer.  It doesn't literally enhance the flavour.  It tricks the brain.

I was highly glutamate intolerate after getting hooked (and yes it was the MSG that did it) on Pringles Sour Cream and Chives.  There are foods which contain natural glutamate and I had to stop eating these for several years.  Gradually I was able to reintroduce them.

Peas, hard cheeses, mushrooms, corn, soy sauce, fish sauce, tomatoes, soy protein, grapes.

I really missed my peas!  And I didn't realise how yummy corn was until I hadn't had it for a long time.

MSG!

OF COURSE!

The problem, here in the states at least, is they are allowed to label it as "natural flavoring"!

Good catch, Chessie!  :)

I used to have seizures within 75 minutes of eating pizza from ONE particular national pizza chain, even BEFORE starting my withdrawal!

One of the "special ingredients" in their formula would set me off within that time frame.

Bheb,  my withdrawal reactions to foods were not to the foods themselves, but based on the time of day I ate them.  At one point, like Rich, I could not risk eating ANYTHING from 3 to 8 pm or be punished with either brain fog or the episodes described above.  Any other time of the day I could eat anything I wanted.

I suggest you keep a strict diary of what you eat when, and a diary of your symptoms, and see if their is an eventual correlation.  It took me almost 2 years to find the correlation with the seizures and the special brand pizza.

Also mark the "times of day" you are eating.

I knew msg was bad , but all through the start of this, I could pretty much get away with kfc, as you guy's would say , what a bummer. I love junk food.

But it's amazing what you can give up where pains concerned.

Yes bheb , as colonial said, it's not what you eat , it's when you eat it.

I fully believe if we had made HALF of the life changes we need to make to "survive" withdrawal, we never would have been "symptomatic" enough to be put on these meds to begin with.

I think a good portion of what gets misdiagnosed as "mental illness", symptomatically speaking, is just from a lack of exercise, junk food- neurotoxin consumption, and too much exposure to florescent lighting and computer screens.

What part of being "over vaccinated" as children in the past 25 years is adding to these is undetermined but I'm sure it's related.

Today I was determined that I was eating properly, and at the right times.

I still felt I'll in afternoon, but managed to keep fatigue to a minimum, just had a few very hungry hours.

Apparently I have reactive hypoglycemia due to excess adrenaline and cortisol.

Which drops my blood sugar levels to the floor , especially if I eat carbs .

I guess this must also have some correlation to the afternoon, which is when it's worse.

Yeah, it's a juggling game , where the timing is everything. It's crazy.

Doc told me about hypoglycemia last time, so I kinda knew what it was.

Going to docs again tomorrow, to ask about a specialist.

My family want me to see one , and have agreed I call the shots, but would like to hear an expert opinion.

I'd be interested in a specialists theory on why the chemical changes in the brain in Autumn reactivate our withdrawals.

You in England,  Me in the USA, another in Canada.

It's not environmental with all of us worldwide crashing within 3 weeks of each other again.

I suspect its the same principal as how some women's symptoms reactive during their cycles.

The brain is already compromised and it can't handle the severe hormonal flux in the brain.

Yeah, we're all northern hemisphere, so we hit winter at the same time, could be something to that.

Unfortunately I'm still struggling with my symptoms, and with s i so strong, I haven't ruled out a reinstatement.

I know it's risky, but I'm not even living, just hurting all day and most nights.

Theoretically would it be better to go back to prozac micro dose or something else.

Don't worry, this would be my decision, I'm only fishing for theory's.

Apparently seasons (in addition to cycles) can affect female hormone fluctuations as well. Not sure what the case is more broadly

Hmm theories....I'm wondering about this for myself too and I've heard a couple different things. Some say that if you had an adverse reaction to it (and not wd) you absolutely should not go back on the same drug. But if it's unclear whether you're in wd or had a reaction, or both, people also say that (if wd is possible) Prozac is the one you were accustomed to, the one your body wants.

Prozac 7 doses of prozac late November 2015.

Adverse reaction on the 7th dose.

If the reason you stopped was an ADVERSE REACTION after ONLY 7 pills, then technically that's different that Withdrawal....

And you've been off it so long at this point....

I would think if your going to try anything, it would be something to treat  the "symptoms" of the reaction....

Not the med that gave it to you to begin with...

If you had been fine on the med and only had withdrawal when you tried to go off, that would be different...

I don't remember anyone here "reinstating" on a drug that gave them a reaction in only 7 doses..

If you only took 7 doses I don't think that's "wd"

I only remember reinstatement of drugs they were fine on but tapered too quickly off of...

My thinking is the same as yours bheb , my brain only recognises prozac, and when I had my reaction, I was using a strong steroid cream daily.

What if they both caused the problem and prozac alone wouldn't.

After all, I took it some years ago, no problem. I even tapered way too quickly with only one symptom. I had night sweats , which was the only symptom I had starting it.

Also after 2 years, my brain could be capable of taking it again.

Just thoughts.

It's hard to know if the brain would differentiate between the fact that only ONE of the items (the prozac and not the steroid) are back in your system and would accept it.

There are also other instances of people who are able to hop on and off of a med with little problems until they try it one too many times, and then when they try to go back on it again, they have a really bad reaction.  I suspect that may have been why your brain had the reaction to it the second time:  THE KINDLING EFFECT.

Yeah that's possible. I recently realized that I took Unisom (doxylamine) the night before i had my adverse reaction, so I'm thinking that definitely set off  my prozac reaction.

If it's the case that Unisom + Prozac caused my reaction, I can say that in my experience my brain didn't accept just one of the factors. I stayed on Prozac a month after the adverse reaction and nothing improved. Just my experience though

Going to docs again this morning. I'll keep you posted on my decision.

At least I slept last night, so I'm a little more rational this morning. and I realise the significance of making life altering decisions , when in great distress.

I've got to try to keep perspective, but on the other hand, I've got to live as well.

Went to the docs and booked to see a specialist. Just got to wait for a date.

Hope the waiting list isn't too long.

Told doctor everything that's been happening. She said she believes me ,but her body language didn't.

Oh well , it's not unexpected.

The effects of going on and off and on and off psychiatric drugs is cumulative.  And the other thing you need to consider is if you had a bad reaction to one type of psychiatric drug you might have a bad reaction to most/all psychiatric drugs.

More of them know.  And that "deer in the headlights" look is from them not even "wanting" to be involved.

When I tried to get an appointment with the original psychiatrist  who put me on the Paxil, when I was having all the WD problems, they flat out REFUSED to take my case once they found out another doctor had added Wellbutrin ON TOP of the Paxil.

The lady flat out told me:  "He NEVER should have put you on the Wellbutrin before taking you off the Paxil".

Doctors are scared.  Their not taking on a case in crisis when, in their opinion, another doctor "messed up".  At that point your entire system is in free fall and your a legal liability if you end up killing yourself or someone else.

No doctor wants a dead patient and the inevitable government review that comes with it because of another doctor's error.

That's why people like me shouldn't be telling the doctor what I want.

Essentially, I requested prozac  both times ,  and the doctors should have been reluctant to do as the patient asked.

It's why antibiotics are becoming useless.

Don't get me wrong, I requested prozac, and I take the blame for that  ,but knowing what I know now, if I was a doctor, I would only give out ad's if someone's life was in danger.

Also doctors in the UK are under a lot of pressure, and struggle to get through the backlog of patients, so are pushed into making snap decisions.

We have the nhs which is very good, but

Our government is bleeding it dry.

I agree, they are so dangerous you need to be truly ill to the point of needing to be hospitalized.  If your that sick you need to be on one of these drugs you need to be hospitalized during the first 2 weeks to see how you react.

But... they won't pay for that.

That's what the whole point of these drugs is:  to "sedate" people so they don't "have to" be "looked after" without EVER addressing the real reason why people are in crisis.

Because that would be too expensive to "fix" the problem correctly.

Dead on  colonial. Why spend money and time treating people, when you can save time and make money  treating people.

One day I know this will change. The media will eventually get this ,and sooner or later answers will be demanded of the pharmaceutical industry.

It will happen eventually.

It's coming out right now with the opiod epidemic because that issue is literally killing people.  The drug companies lied to doctors for years about the pain meds being perfectly harmless and non addictive.

Just like they have misled about the psych drugs, (that the withdrawals are just proof of the original condition) or adverse reactions which are far worse.

As to when this will all change?

I will say, like the pain pill "crisis",  not until the monetary cost of caring for all the people who become "full time" disabled by these drugs out weighs the profit margin they are bringing in to both the drug companies, in combination with when the government gets tired of paying for us to be out on disability,  because the number of us out on pension due to us being damaged by the drugs.

With the pain pill crisis people are dying, but that means they are NO LONGER a drain on the governments resources at that point, that's the brutal truth.  From an accountants stand point, this is worse. We aren't dying from the psych drugs per se.  Disabled drug addicts dying is,  from a statistical point of view, the best a government can hope for.  It's why euthanasia of the elderly is coming back around the world and people are being denied cancer treatments for more aggressive hospice treatments.

The answer to the problem is the same as the opioid epidemic, you don't give someone who is fully functioning and merely breaks there leg THREE MONTHS supply of percocets, you give them ONE WEEK.  Likewise, you don't give someone who is fully functioning psych drugs for "minor" every days life issues, like normal stress, adolescent growing pains, seasonal depression, the transient things that come and go in life.    Because like the pain meds, within a mere 3-6 months people are hooked and or damaged, and now everyone is out on pension, never to return to the tax payer base again.

A society can only maintain a certain percentage of "non functioning" disabled people before the entire economy goes under.  When that time comes that the high percentage of non functioning people outweighs the economy's ability to support us, then all of a sudden you will see the government beginning to crack down on "new prescriptions" to people who have never taken them.

I agree colonial.

It hurts to think about it. I try not to dwell on it ,when I'm ill ,and around 6 years ago I too was addicted to codeine, that was tough to get off,but I'd do it again instead of this .it took 3 months from start to finish, and every day I got a little better.

Easy to see the end ,unlike this ,where it keeps coming back ,even when you think your healed.

For the last couple of days, quite strong agitation again, and in the evening adrenaline makes my legs feel weak.

But today ate a fatty meal in afternoon and within an hour, massive depressive feeling.

I can't get used to been hungry all afternoon, but I guess I'll have to.

Another new symptom is cold legs from the knee down.

On the plus side, had a couple of good night's sleep. Have probably jinxed myself now.

My symptoms cycle also, some leave and are replaced by others.

I take it as a good sign the reaction-withdrawal-healing is progressing.

That' encouraging that the sleep is returning.

I as well can't eat during the afternoon during certain flare ups..

I've learned the afternoon hunger is much better than the sleep paralysis, head fog, etc.

But today ate a fatty meal in afternoon and within an hour, massive depressive feeling.

I can't get used to been hungry all afternoon, but I guess I'll have to.

I usually eat small amounts of protein like chicken. But I'm paying for it now.

Can't sleep, strange depressive feeling in my head ,jerking me awake as soon as I start to drop off .
