Hey there Catina7. How's it going?

Hi @Marsha, thanks for checking in.  I'm having a lot of anxiety.  I think I'm going to have to start tapering by a lesser amount each month.  I want to avoid what I went through before when I crashed horribly.  It might take me many years to get off this evil poison, but I know in the end it will be worth it.  I hope things are going well for you!

Going slow and steady works. You'll get through it. I am doing well thank you.

I am not a medical professional. My comments and posts are based on personal experiences. Please consult appropriate medical professionals for advice.

I was started on psych drugs back in the late 80's. You name it. I probably was on it. 47 different drugs. Over 57 thousand pills. Tapered off final cocktail February 1st, 2013- September 9th, 2019. For Hashimotos I take Levothyroxine. Liothyronine. BP meds. For supplements I take B12 hydroxy. Fish oil w/D3. Bee pollen. Magnesium Glycinate.

I just saw this quote on Instagram (@anxiety.positive) and think it ties in nicely with tapering and withdrawal:

"If you're struggling, you don't have to focus on having a good day.  Just have a day.  Survive.  It'll get better.  Until then, just have a day."

I have come to the conclusion that I need to change up my taper dose and rate.  I've been reducing 5% every month, but the anxiety is getting worse and worse.  It's obviously too much for my system to handle.  I just re-read the section about micro-tapering and am going to switch to that method instead.  However, until that time I'm going to hold at my current dose until I feel more stable.  If this process takes me many, many years then so be it.  The important thing is to remain stable and functional.

Thinking about this new game plan makes me feel incredibly more hopeful that I can successfully get off the Effexor.  And HOPE is the one thing that keeps us all going!  Never, EVER give up hope that there are better days ahead.

The bead counting gives you a good bit of flexibility with tapering. Even if it's only a couple of beads at a time it is still progress. I think you'll find micro tapering more motivating because you're making cuts more often, which gives you that sense of purpose and action towards doing something.

Hey Catina! I saw on another thread about your cat, and I wanted to say I'm so sorry you're going through this. April 1, 2024

Starting Dose:  37.5 mg

Average Bead Count per Capsule:  111

Beads Removed Today:  18

This past month has pretty much followed the pattern of the previous months - I experienced increased anxiety and heart palpitations towards the end of the month.  However, the end of March felt more intense, and it's taking me longer to recover.  I'm grateful that taking 1/2 a Benadryl at night helps me to sleep, although I only resort to it if I'm feeling desperate.

Today I only removed two more beads, thus ending my 5% monthly taper rate.  I'm going to begin micro-tapering, removing two beads every two weeks and then holding for at least two weeks to see how it affects my nervous system.  Hopefully I'll be able to tolerate it much better.

I try to view any symptoms as a sign that my body is getting closer to healing, not further away from it, since each reduction I make is one step closer to getting to zero mgs.  As long as I'm moving forward and making some kind of progress, then I consider that a victory.  When I see the container that holds all the beads I've removed, it reminds me that I'm slowly chipping away at the walls of the psych drug prison in order to make my escape.

This site has truly been a lifeline for me and reminds me that I'm never alone.  I feel accepted, supported, loved, and validated.  I'm grateful for the words of support I receive from others, and it makes me feel useful when I can reciprocate that support to my fellow members.  I'm so encouraged by ALL of you.  YOU help me to keep going day after day.  ❤️

A giant hug to you @Catina7 ❤️

  • 1996 Effexor XR
  • 1996-2012  Prozac and Klonipin
  • 2012: physician took me off Prozac rapidly. Severe (unrecognized) withdrawal. Went inpatient and was poly-drugged -- rapid changes of SSRIs, antipsychotics and benzodiazepines.
  • 2012 Paxil 40mg
  • 2012 Xanax XR 6mg
  • 2019 Xanax XR .5mg (tapered down to this level since being prescribed in 2012)
  • 2014-2022 Gabapentin (tapered down to zero from 1800mg)
  • May 2023 HRT - estriol, estradiol, testosterone, progesterone. Dec. 8, 2023 - stopped progesterone pill (started having awful reactions); inconsistent with estrogen and testosterone combined cream in confusion of severe withdrawal symptoms. Dec. 14, 2023: Estrogen/testosterone cream: Back on about 1/4 amount I was taking previously of estrogen and testosterone cream (1.5 pumps out of 4 -- full amount seemed to ignite some kind of fire in my hyper sensitive state); did not resume progesterone (b/c of bad reactions after taking in WD)
  • December 2022: Paxil 40 to 30mg (went OK); May 2023: Paxil 30 to 20 mg (went OK); Oct. 14, 2023: Paxil 15mg; Oct. 21, 2023: Paxil 10mg
  • Nov. 9, 2023: tried reinstating to 20mg but reacted very badly (kindling?)
  • November 18, 2023: 7.5ml (15mg equivalent) *switch to manufacturer's liquid, Novatium* Conventional psych doc switched me to 7.5ml liquid b/c tiny pills were  splitting unevenly - further destabilization by both switching to liquid and changing dose at same time.
  • November 2023 - present: *severe* withdrawal symptoms, akathisia
  • Dec. 6 - manufacturer change on alprazolam er (further destabilization?). Normal mfr very difficult to find now.
  • Jan 6 2024 - stopped coffee and all forms of caffeine. Eliminated dairy, processed foods, sugar.  Gluten intolerant so no gluten. Low fodmap diet for gut issues, daily leafy greens, a lot of protein to avoid blood sugar spikes after meals and also for akathisia.
  • Feb 27 2024 - doc had me stop hormone cream. FDA-required formulation had changed and she was worried about my transition to something new. She also said that the estrogen/testosterone hormones are activating.  I had already dropped a good bit in dose early in withdrawal (Dec 14 2023 above) b/c it got lost in the chaos of early withdrawal.
  • March 2024 - doctor having me try propranolol for akathisia. First as needed starting around Mar 7 and then daily starting around Mar 23. (aka very bad in morning especially)
  • Apr 2 2024 - stopped propranolol. Think it was interefering with sleep and causing other side effects. May keep on as prn.

I am wishing you all the best with your taper and new approach, Catina.  You are doing really well navigating all of this and adjusting as needed.  Sending you lots of good wishes, WR.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg; 3/29/24: 1.17 mg; 4/5/24: 1.14 mg; 4/13/24: 1.11 mg; 4/20/24: 1.09 mg; 4/27/24: 1.06 mg

I spend a lot time just resting and caring for necessary things around the house.  Thankfully I don't have to work.  I support my husband who is self-employed and owns a very small business and care for five indoor kitties who are my children.  I exercise regularly and try to take good care of myself.  I go out twice a week - once to grocery shop and then once to attend a meeting at my Kingdom Hall.  The other mid-week evening meeting I have at my Kingdom Hall I attend on Zoom because I find it very challenging to attend in person.

@Catina7 so nice to have pets, all those snuggles help a lot ☺️ I miss having a dog!  You have a good foundation to heal in.  Yes, I find outings to be overwhelming most times, after a couple of hours I want to get home where I feel safe!

@Catina7 hi sweetie. How have you been managing? Is the anxiety settling? It might be worth holding till it settles before another drop. It can be so frustrating when you just want to get off the rotten drug. Slow and steady wins the race. Sending 🤗❤️
