2003 Paxil - I can't remember the dose but I think it was 10mg  experienced  horrendous akathisia when starting for 3 weeks then okay

2004.  slow reduction to 0 , withdrawal symptoms, so reinstated to 10mg - again horrendous Akathisia which lasted 5 weeks.
2005 - attempted to slowly taper off and again  Terrible withdrawal so reinstated and endured akathisia until it settled. Psychiatrist changed me over to

Zoloft so that I could have another baby. No adverse reaction with the switch except terrible diorreah

2006   tried once more to come off Zoloft carefully with terrible results. reinstated Zoloft and used 2.5 mg of zyprexa to help Akathisia- horrid episode                             lasted 3 months with some akathisia and severe depression which I’d never had before. Withdrawal from zyprexa ( depression)

2008  50 mg of Zoloft then after 6 months I tapered to 25 mg and decided to stay there .

2012 stress event and peri menopause acute anxiety which led to, updosing to 125 mg, tortuous symptoms(akathisia) then stabilized,  back to 50 mg-

2014 - same again  down to 25 with Akathisia on updosing and a hospital visit.

2019 - 2023 Zoloft tapering by 2 mg linear taper every 3 months started at 50 mg, got to 25 mg around January 2023.  June 2023- health anxiety and what feels like withdrawal again.  Insomnia, anxiety, blunted good feelings.

2023 June- Zyprexa taken twice, ativan 1 mg taken once, temazepan infrequent but 15- 18th of June used for 4 nights

2023 August - introduced 7.5 mg of mirtazapine for 12 days then 15mg of mirtazapine. Sleep now ok but daily life depression, anhedonia, agitation and a weird feeling of being sedate and anxious at the same time. Currently holding.

I'm so sorry. It's so very frustrating. I really think inflammation must be at least part of the problem. Have you tried an anti-inflammatory diet? In some ways its good to know that there is nothing structurally wrong with your back. So then we go back to it being nerve pain, withdrawal, and we ask what is going to possibly aid or speed up that healing. I'm going to see if I can find some info for you on inflammation. In the meantime stay calm and do everything you can to ease your suffering. I find hot water bottles on aching areas beneficial. Hugs

Doctor told me my vitamin d is a little low.

I took a child's dose of vit d rather than the mega dose my doctor wanted to give me. Thought I would be cautious. No idea if I've reacted to it but my heart is going mental and I feel sick. Just what I need because I wasn't in unbearable pain already

😞. Perhaps keep going with it for three more days to see if those symptoms settle down. Vit d is important. If you can’t tolerate the supplement then get out in the sunshine with bare arms. It must be getting a little warmer there ? So sorry you are feeling sick and having palpitations. Hopefully those symptoms will be short lived

This is what I'm having and its unbearable. I can not get comfortable. I can not find anyone who has had the same problem. Please someone point me in the right direction of others who may have had this symptom. I seriously need support.

This has come on after back pain that wouldn't go away. Had an MRI which found nothing wrong with my back.

What do you make of this?

I just took a child's dose of vit D for 4 days and now I'm having sweats, shaking, pounding heart nausea etc. I can only imagine it was from the vit D because I wasn't having it before.

I also looked back over my med history and saw I took vit D in 2015 and 4 days later ended up on propranalol and my first antidepressant! Could it be all those years ago I had a reaction to the vit D and didn't need the medication!

I questioned all this with my doctor. They say its not possible. That people don't have reactions to vit D. He said its just a coincidence. Surely not.

I feel awful. And this only started after the vit D supplement.

If I look online I can't find to many people having vit d reactions. But what do you think?

It's possible that you are sensitized to Vitamin D. There is no telling while going through WD. Many things that normal people can take with no problems cause people in WD issues because our systems are out of balance during this time frame. If you are having a reaction to it, then stop taking it. Going out and getting 15-20 minutes of sunshine every day should give you all the Vitamin D you need. That's what I do, sunshine is therapeutic and always makes me feel better.

KenA is right. Getting some natural sunlight might solve your problem.  Others on this site have had the same problem.

It seems weird that maybe I had the same reaction in 2015 but assumed I had had a breakdown. But everyone says that's not possible.

I understand why I may have a reaction now I'm in WD but what if I react like that regardless. Yet doctor says not possible

@Doctorsrcrap I am not sure if you are addressing me or KenA. I will answer though since I am not sure.  You have my utmost compassion. I know it is difficult. Sometimes these mysteries do get solved with time and sometimes not.  I hope you continue to improve. Best wishes.

@RachelSusan

Thank you.

I'm also scared because I have back pain, numbness in my back and buttocks and the tops of my legs. No one knows why but I'm scared I will end up paralysed or something. I had an mri and they said it was fine.

I never heard of anyone having numbness and aching in the buttocks on here. There's something comforting knowing someone else has experienced the same things.

I realise once before you asked me to tell you a bit more about myself. So here goes.

My name is Sarah and I'm in the UK. I'm 34. I live with my husband and my 2 pet rats. They are adorable. I would attach a photo but for some reason I can't. I was very keen to recover because I am very aware my biological clock is ticking and I'm worried the ship has sailed on that. My husband is the world to me and last year he was diagnosed with a health condition which is terrible and I would love to feel better so I could be a better wife for him.

Sorry maybe I'm over sharing now

@Doctorsrcrap Thank you for telling me about yourself. It sounds like you have a lot going on in your life right now.  Because there is so much going on do you think it would be possible to put the vitamin D issue to the side, at least for right now?

It looks like you got off of your antidepressants in 2022. Good for you.

I do hear you about your biological clock. It is an issue to consider. As for being a better wife, just the fact that you are mentioning it tells me that you are doing the very best you can. Sometimes we aren't perfect and "good enough" is indeed enough.

I really hope that things continue to improve for you. Like I said at the beginning of this post, it sounds like you have many serious things you are dealing with at one time. That must indeed be difficult and stress inducing. I hope better times are coming your way.

@Doctorsrcrap

I had a baby at 39 . This is common nowadays. Definitely stop the vit d . Listen to your body. I understand the seeking and wanting answers. We need to know what the hell is happening to us. I do this too.

The  back pain is continued nerve pain . You have investigated and done everything you can to find the source but the good news is that it’s not structurally damaged. Nerve pain and inflammation do not show up in tests of any kind. If I were you I would trial a ketogenic diet because it’s been used for arthritis with success. I was listening to a podcast about it yesterday. Ketosis tricks the body into the fasting state and activates autophagy which is where old damaged cells are eaten up and new cells are generated. It might speed up your healing. It’s worth a try.
Just a thought. Diet change can be hard but maybe autophagy might be a quicker way out of this 🌻

@Jaffathank you.

Im just worried there is something else going on and it won't get better if we sit and do nothing.

Also I can't find one person doctor or nutrionilist who believes you can have a reaction to vit d. Now I know I can because of my med history. But no one will believe the fact that it may have happened before. No one else seems to react that way to it and I don't understand why I am. I don't know how to calm the reaction down. Or how long it will take. I'm sick of not being believed.

I agree with the others to stop the Vit D and try and get out into the sunshine more. It may not be the Vit D you’re reacting to, however, it could very well be a filler in the vitamin. Read the ingredient list on the bottle/pkg and make a note of any extra ingredients. I wouldn’t experiment with other brands until your system calms down some.

There was a recent study published in January of 2024 that came to the conclusion that antidepressants can cause us to experience chronic fatigue as well as mess with our sensitivity to pain. There are many, many others on this site who suffer from chronic pain after tapering. I am one of them. It’s not just coming off AD’s that seemed to increase our sensitivity to pain but other psych drugs as well, including benzos.

Personally, I have found taking turmeric or curcumin, Magenesium glycinate, and Omega 3 (fish oil) have helped my pain levels, but have not eliminated the pain entirely. I am real careful about checking out the ingredient list on each one and try to find ones from very reputable brands with the fewest ingredients. I started out on each with only a fraction of a capsule, introducing one at a time. Do you take any of these? I started with magnesium glycinate, opening up a powder capsule and putting just a tiny bit into an empty capsule. Once I tolerated that, I added more to my dose of it.

I also see a physical therapist who works on my neck, back, and jaw. I also get massages and see a chiropractor. Those three professionals have helped my pain levels more than anything else I have tried.

I understand your desperation. My pain was often to the point where I feared I would need to end my life because I couldn’t take another minute of it. But, it’s amazing how resilient we are. The fear was terrible, wondering if there was something else wrong or wondering if it will just keep getting worse with no doctors able to give me any help. Fear was my number one enemy. I still struggle some with it. It’s good that you had your back checked out. Don’t hesitate to get a second opinion, if only to reassure yourself that there’s nothing worse going on. Meanwhile, know that these ADs have been responsible for causing terrible pain for a ton of us. I know that doesn’t take any of the pain away, but maybe it can reassure you that you’re not losing it and the pain is real.

One last note: Be your own best advocate. If you’re not satisfied with your doctor’s answers, get that second or third opinion. We’ve all learned that the hard way.

Hang in there. It will get better.❤️‍🩹

@FindRestThank you

I don't intend on taking vitamin D ever again. There was no other ingredient in it other than sunflower oil. Its definatly the vitamin D.

i just dont understand why i have pain in my butt of all places. Its impossible to get comfortable. The oesteopath I see doesn't understand it. The neurosurgeon said my lumbar mri spine is fine. It's just madness.

I dint know how to cope with it when magnesium doesn't help. Stretching doesn't help and the oesteopath has no suggestions. It's ridiculous.

I wish I knew the solution or had other ideas. Have you seen a physical therapist or whatever they are called in your country? I know our healthcare system is different here in the US, but I sure wish you could get in to see a good one who could physically work with your body.

If thr pain comes from withdrawal is there actually anything anyone can do? Or is it just a matter of grinding your teeth and waiting for it to end?

If it comes from withdrawals, it doesn’t mean it isn’t real or that there isn’t a physical cause that can be treated.  My physical therapist and other professionals believe that the neurological effect of tapering has caused my muscles to tense up, basically putting my body in a constant fight or flight mode. My muscles are tight and rigid, pulling bones out of place and pinching nerves as well. PT, massage, and chiropractic care all help me in this area.

Doctorscrap,

I react terribly to vitamin D and my level has gotten as low as 7.  Nobody believe me either but  while I am barely tapering my withdrawal ramps up even with a tiny dose.  I can't take calcium either and am a very petite white almost 70 year old woman, so my bones are disintegrating.  I am able to walk in the sun for about 6 months out of the year.   That said,  I have trouble sleeping every time I have a long walk in the sun from the D,  but I have to bring my level up.  The past two spring/summer/fall I brought my level up to 27 or so.  I do have a genetic defect.  (VDR; double mutation)  otherwise,  I might be able to bring it up higher.  I think the sun is the only way I can get D, and I know I am risking skin cancer but I see a dermatologist yearly or more often.

Vitamin D is not a vitamin; it is a hormone and a stimulating one.  I have done a ton of research on it.  It interacts and weakens my meds so it brings on withdrawal.  For you, you are likely sensitized to foreign substances.  I wonder if you could tolerate vitamin D from the sun? BTW, I just don't tell anyone about my sensitivity to vitamin D.  I just say I prefer to get it from the sun.  None of my practitioners believe me.  I can't take any vitamins either except for vitamin B12 which took me 3 years to tolerate.  I was so deficient I was at risk of heart attack or stroke.  I started very low and very slow and seem to tolerate it now.  MAYBE you could start with just a pin prick on your tongue  and move up ultra-slowly or you could try the sun route.  The sun route is tedious for me as I need long exposure to accumulate enough D.  45 minutes/day for most sunny, partly cloudy days only brings my D up to mid-20's by winter.

I drew this conclusion years ago when I was taking vitamin D regularly.  I stopped.  My bones are in bad shape but my mental health is the only thing I have left to hold onto and I am barely doing that.

You just have to be ready for people NOT to believe you and do the best you can.  I, too, tried less than pediatric doses but have the same reaction.  I even had the reaction to a "Sperti" light which is a safe alternative to the sun.

I believe you.  You are not crazy.

Grace

  • Current dose of diazepam is 8.8 and valium is 5.7.  I had to up-dose the total valium/diazepam from 12.74 to 14.5 where I have stayed since June 2023.  I am crossing over to generic at a somewhat tolerable rate of .3mg/month after about 2 months of trial/error w/ updosing.  I am not currently tapering; will continue to cross over.

Thank you for believing me. I'm going to steer clear of it. i was only just under and summer is almost here so i will just get out in the sun.

hopefully this reaction will wear off soon as its horrible. Not sure how long to expect though.

At the minute I'm going crazy with numbness in my lower back and backside. Can't find anyone who has had a similar problem but no one can find a reason for it either. Its driving me crazy.

Standard doctor response to anything that doesn't neatly fit a textbook.

  • 15mg Remeron/Mirtazapine November starting 2022 (severe physical side effects)
  • Attempted to taper off January 2023, ended up having a major breakdown and going up to 30mg, took weeks to stabilise
  • Therapy and self-care helped a lot mentally while stable on the drug (but with bad physical side effects)
  • Tapered off over 4-5 weeks, felt physically better all through taper & sexual side effects & palpitations went away
  • Last dose 20-24th April 2023
  • Severely physically unwell from 2nd May 2023. Had many bad symptoms eg. Palpitations, adrenaline rushes at night etc in the weeks following and couldn't eat.
  • Many symptoms eventually resolved, but left with severe and debilitating fatigue, poor sleep and sexual side effects.

Summary: 5 months using Mirtazapine, including 1 month taper ending late April 2023. Severe withdrawal since.

Hi Doc,

I have terrible chronic pain especially in my spine/bones.  It is now 24/7 and I never get relief.  Some of it is explained by Mri images...I have terrible osteo-arthritis in my whole spine and a few (now benign) tumors.  Mostly I am told that I should not be in this much pain, but I am.  I believe my meds have put me into some sort of pain-feedback loop that I can no longer get out of.  I am writing this lying flat on my back because my tailbone feels cracked. I put my legs up over pillows and prop my computer on my legs.  My bones hurt all the time.  Nobody has much sympathy as I believe they all think I did this to myself, which in a way, I did, but it was AFTER I realized these drugs were harming me that I connected the deterioration of my spine.  I cannot tolerate the very worst withdrawal from the drugs and the constant pain and insomnia, so here I am...trying to manage it all.  Wishing this would all be over soon.

You are off the drugs.  I am guessing your symptoms will wax and wane and that eventually you will feel much better.  I am not sure how long these crazy sensitivities last...I imagine for some they never leave.  For me, once a sensitivity has taken hold, I cannot get past it.  I try.

@savinggraceplease don't do say. Surely you can heal too?

If you cant heal why should I?

My MRI was fine nothing to be seen on my back snd oesteopath says I'm am enigma. Assuming that means it's withdrawal causing it? I can only get some many tests done.

Dies anyone know how long s reaction to vitamin D will last?

I think this is the worst I have felt the entire withdrawal.

I'm starting to honestly think taking vitamin d was the reason I ended up on antidepressants in the first place. I feel exactly like I did when I took them back them. I haven't felt like this is forever. Anxiety, panic, heart pounding, upset stomach. Its like adrenaline overload. I am terrified.

I have no idea how long this intensity will last, this bad reaction to vitamin D. What I do know is that when you are feeling symptoms that are this intense - it can feel like forever! But I want to remind you that it’s not forever. Just get through today . Just get through each moment. You can do this

I don't know whether I've had the reaction because I'm in withdrawal or if I generally can't take the supplement. Because when I was on no meds I had a similar reaction to it. But my doctor says you can't get Anxiety from vitamin D.

Doctors don’t know everything. Whether they are wrong or right you just don’t know. You can only hold this suspicion about vit d lightly. Whatever has caused this reaction or sudden onset of symptoms is going to remain a mystery . For the moment let’s go with vit d being the culprit. Maybe it was what caused symptoms way back before you even started drugs.

Friend I so completely relate to your anxiety and this mind explosion of trying to figure out both what’s happened to you and what is happening now. I do exactly the same thing. I recently got a compounded script for Zoloft 25 mg because I wondered if cutting my 50 mg scored tablet in half was the reason I was not reaching a better baseline. No matter how well I cut it the two halves were not equal. Then I got to wondering if my whole episode that started last may 23 was because I was cutting pill and getting uneven amounts. It took 9 months of doing this and then suddenly…. Withdrawal symptoms! What the hell ? These symptoms were so unbearable that I lost 8 kilos in three weeks and then 6 weeks of hyperactivity and hyper alertness and three hours sleep a night and children to look after , had to quit work, terrible.Sadly I introduced mirt for some relief but it’s just a different kind of bad now. I want to taper off but I can’t go back to that level of suffering so I’m trying to figure out what happened to cause the destabilisation at 25 mg of Zoloft???? After 9 mths on 25 ? After a slow taper from 50 by 2 mg every three months. Is there any hope for me? I’m terrified and despairing because I feel I can’t live like I am now.

Sorry if I’ve gone on too much about me. It’s just that I want you to know I completely understand your need to find answers and have some information to work with. We are so fragile. We just need a little bit of insight to help us move forward. Hugs

Do you need to carry on holding or could it be adverse reaction?

@KenA

I need somr urgent help.

Ever since I took the vitamin D I have had sustained high hesrt rate, sweating, tremors etc.

I'm also experiencing excruciating nerve pain. I don't know if this I'd actually a withdrawal symptom or I have infact caused myself an actual injury.

I ended up in a and e because I am in such bad shape. They didn't really care too much. Said my heart rate etc could be like that because of thr nerve pain and inflammation. Not that they checked me over. They have told me to take a short course of pregabalin for the nerve pain until it can start to heal. I said I didn't want anything that worked on gaba receptors but he said it was my only option. No amount of your average killer is working.

I'm an absolute mess.

Is it safe for me to try it for the short term to get relief?

It's so bad and I'm devastated that I'm filled with all the symptoms of high adrenaline on top of it.

I cant eat I can't get comfortable my heart goes nuts. I don't know what happened.
