Bailey: Acute Paxil Withdrawal Symptoms

Recommended Posts

@LotusRising I'm not sure how to determine if I have the interdose withdrawal. I would wonder why my symptoms go on for so long after taking it at 6:30am. You did a direct switch to another med but that was pretty awful? My doctor has wondered about switching me from x to clonezapam, a longer acting agent. I'm terrified of everything right now. I'm terrified that the x is interfering with healing but terrified to make a change and destabilize further. I feel trapped. It's crippling to me to think about and I don't know how to not be paralyzed in fear and looping terror. I'm always afraid I'm doing something wrong to prevent healing and my withdrawal brain functioning is so very vulnerable and also uncontrollable, it seems. Appreciate any thoughts you have on any of this. Thanks much.

  • 1996 Effexor XR
  • 1996-2012  Prozac and Klonipin
  • 2012: physician took me off Prozac rapidly. Severe (unrecognized) withdrawal. Went inpatient and was poly-drugged -- rapid changes of SSRIs, antipsychotics and benzodiazepines.
  • 2012 Paxil 40mg
  • 2012 Xanax XR 6mg
  • 2019 Xanax XR .5mg (tapered down to this level since being prescribed in 2012)
  • 2014-2022 Gabapentin (tapered down to zero from 1800mg)
  • May 2023 HRT - estriol, estradiol, testosterone, progesterone. Dec. 8, 2023 - stopped progesterone pill (started having awful reactions); inconsistent with estrogen and testosterone combined cream in confusion of severe withdrawal symptoms. Dec. 14, 2023: Estrogen/testosterone cream: Back on about 1/4 amount I was taking previously of estrogen and testosterone cream (1.5 pumps out of 4 -- full amount seemed to ignite some kind of fire in my hyper sensitive state); did not resume progesterone (b/c of bad reactions after taking in WD)
  • December 2022: Paxil 40 to 30mg (went OK); May 2023: Paxil 30 to 20 mg (went OK); Oct. 14, 2023: Paxil 15mg; Oct. 21, 2023: Paxil 10mg
  • Nov. 9, 2023: tried reinstating to 20mg but reacted very badly (kindling?)
  • November 18, 2023: 7.5ml (15mg equivalent) *switch to manufacturer's liquid, Novatium* Conventional psych doc switched me to 7.5ml liquid b/c tiny pills were  splitting unevenly - further destabilization by both switching to liquid and changing dose at same time.
  • November 2023 - present: *severe* withdrawal symptoms, akathisia
  • Dec. 6 - manufacturer change on alprazolam er (further destabilization?). Normal mfr very difficult to find now.
  • Jan 6 2024 - stopped coffee and all forms of caffeine. Eliminated dairy, processed foods, sugar.  Gluten intolerant so no gluten. Low fodmap diet for gut issues, daily leafy greens, a lot of protein to avoid blood sugar spikes after meals and also for akathisia.
  • Feb 27 2024 - doc had me stop hormone cream. FDA-required formulation had changed and she was worried about my transition to something new. She also said that the estrogen/testosterone hormones are activating.  I had already dropped a good bit in dose early in withdrawal (Dec 14 2023 above) b/c it got lost in the chaos of early withdrawal.
  • March 2024 - doctor having me try propranolol for akathisia. First as needed starting around Mar 7 and then daily starting around Mar 23. (aka very bad in morning especially)
  • Apr 2 2024 - stopped propranolol. Think it was interefering with sleep and causing other side effects. May keep on as prn.

Your symptoms would get worse as you approach your dose and then better after taking it. Since you are quite symptomatic, this might be difficult to ascertain.

I did and I wouldn't advise it. It needs to be done in a stepwise fashion to avoid fluctuation in plasma levels and even then, the equivalents are not exact. And typically, the switch is made to diazepam, not clonazepam. I had no idea about any of this at the time and unfortunately many doctors and pharmacists don't either. I'm certain it's one of the main reasons I had such a long and difficult taper and continue to experience symptoms even at a year off. Switching over is a personal decision, but ideally you would taper from the drug your body is used to. This might mean you switch to an immediate release and dose more frequently.

I hear you, I really do. I clearly remember feeling this way. But, I don't think taking the xanax is interfering with healing. I don't believe it when people say you can't heal until the medication is out of your body. That just doesn't make sense to me. The brain and body are working to get back to homeostasis at all times. You're not doing anything wrong. Stability can just take a long time for some of us. I never really did stabilize for my entire taper and I'm doing a LOT better than I was back then. Keep hanging on, you'll get there ❤️

@LostInCanada have you had muscle cramping by any chance in your withdrawal? I've started to have bad calf and foot cramping, especially at night. I've not ever had this before.

I did a bit. Are you taking magnesium? I read somewhere if you take magnesium you should also take the same amount of calcium. Just take them apart from each other by at least 2 hours. I found since doing this the cramping has subsided.

I have topical magnesium that I've been putting on my feet. I've been off and on with a very low dose of oral mag glycinate (25mg) b/c I'm hypersensitive and a bit afraid. Thanks @LostInCanada

That's good to hear. Does it help at all?

@LotusRising It hasn't seemed to today but I'm glad I tried at least. I feel trapped and without hope, without a way forward. My thoughts are so dark today. I wish they weren't but they are.

Hi Bailey, yes about the same. Hanging in there trying to read all the success stories. Sorry to hear about the Akathisia I still have mine every morning but it’s milder than it was in the beginning. It’s the head pain for me that hasn’t improved. I joined a FB group called World Tapering Organisation. There is a lady on there called Shiloh  Cadieux who healed after a bout of Akathisia. She shares hopeful posts encouraging others that they will heal. Maybe worth a look if you think it would help…😘

Just checking in to see if you were able to get out for a morning walk?

Not today @LotusRising. Too convulsive and also feeling electrocuted. Did the recumbant bike for 30 minutes to try to get some of the akathisia energy out. I pedal and move my arms around like crazy. I hope tomorrow will be better.

Sweet potatoes, brown rice, steel cut oats, and some apples.  If you're worried about blood sugar spikes, you can first cook the potatoes, rice, or oatmeal and then cool them in the fridge overnight.  After that, when you heat them up again they become a "resistant starch" and it doesn't spike your blood sugar as much.

@Catina7 I'm so thankful you introduced me to resistant starches. I was totally unfamiliar. I'm carefully trying out sweet potatoes this week --  cooked and then refridgerated overnight.

You're welcome Bailey.  I didn't know about them until recently myself.  All I know is that if you are having zero carbs then you're no doubt in ketosis, and for some people ketosis can be the kiss of death when it comes to anxiety.  Just try a little bit to see how you react.  All we can do is try, right?  Your body will let you know if it agrees with you or not.

Hopefully I'll be able to @LotusRising. My mornings are often so violent with this morning no exception. No place in backyard where neighbors wouldn't see me writhing or convulsing. This is excruciating torture.  I semi slept for maybe 2-3 hours total last night with lots of wake ups. Then at 3am my stomach and chest felt like a bomb had gone off inside. Convulsing, bent over, feeling like I'm being electrcuted, staggering around house around, terror. Then recumbant bike in crazy manner with arms flying to try to lessen the explosion. Very difficult to not unalive myself during those hours.  I just don't know how I'm going to make it. The only thing I can say is that it does seem to lessen mid to late morning.

2-3 hours total sleep sounds like an improvement! You might take that as a small win. It suggests that your nervous system is calm enough to sleep, even if it's short-lived. And the fact that you get a small window in the mid to late morning is also a good sign. Maybe that would be a good time to sit outside or try to get some fresh air?

I'm sorry, I know it's really hard!! You will get there! Are you able to get outside? How are things going with your sister? I remember saying there was a bit of conflict about how to handle what's happening right now.

Thank you @LotusRising.  I'm really scared. Yes, get outside once a day for a walk by early afternoon. Doing best I can with that. Things mostly ok with sister, I think, though there are stresses.

Yeah, I'm scared I won't heal given how slow and savage this has been. I also struggle with a lot (alot) of fear and terror, day and night. Thanks again, @LostInCanada
