2005-2009, Lexapro 10 - 20 mg, CT WD w/severe depression and anxiety:  2010-2015, Paxil, 30 - 40 mg, tapered off at 10 mg/week, moderate anxiety and depression:  2010-2015, Clonozapam 0.25 mg, as needed for anxiety and sleep:  1/10/2015, Zoloft 25 mg, tried to increase to 50 and 75, but nausea and dizziness:  2/13/2015, Paxil 5 mg, added back after 2 weeks at zero to reduce WD:  2/28/2015, Paxil 10 mg, increased from 5 mg to reduce WD, HOLDING:  3/04/2015, Zoloft discontinued (reduced to ~12.5 mg on 2/19, ~6.25 mg on 2/26, then zero):  4/26/2015, Paxil starting 10% taper (no scale so was inadvertently at 20% taper, yikes!):  4/30/2015, Paxil 10 mg, reinstated (WD disappeared between August 2015 and May 2016)

5/02/2016, Started 10% taper, reinstated to 10 mg on 5/11/16:  4/29/2017, Last dose of Paxil (working with holistic psychiatrist, lots of supplements to aid WD):  Primary symptoms: apathy, demotivation, anhedonia, fatigue, stress intolerance, moderate social anxiety

7/1/2018 Finally feeling like myself again, success!!! Praise God! Even with the stress of relocating recently, I am feeling pretty good most of the time now. Granted, I eat healthy, I exercise, I don't drink caffeine or alcohol and I try hard find a healthy balance of quiet and social times. Hang in there and keep the faith, you can do it too!

1990-1992 Anafranil. OCD under control, extreme social phobia. Hospitalized for the 1st and 2nd time (out of 3). 1999-2002: Prozac 20 mg. Stopped due to severe anxiety. Increased benzo consumption. 2003-2005: AD free (therapy). Feeling good, started working. Persisted 9 yrs in full-time job. 2005-2007: Ixel (milnacipran). SNRI. 2007-2011: Lexapro 10-15 mg. May 2014 back to benzos (Valium) in hope of improvement, aggravated depression and anxiety. Sept. 2014: Lexapro 2,5 mg, highest dose 5 mg for 1,5 months (Spring 2015). Steady decline, anxiety, fatigue. Diagnosed with OCD, dysthymia, social phobia, anxiety disorder, insomnia, eating disorder (first bulimia, then anorexia). Current meds: Seroquel 6,25 mg for sleep - 5 mg since Nov. 5, 2015. Lexapro 1,25 mg since Aug. 4th 2015. I'm sorry you're experiencing waves, but you can be sure they won't last indefinitely, and that a " window" is just around the corner !!  :)

 

Thank you for the sleep meditation. I will definitely check it out. I haven't really tried any, but if it's helping you, I will give it a go.

June 2014 abilify 2.5 remeron wasn't working so abilify was then added

September 2014 woke up with anxiety x 100!!!!

Pdoc then took me from 45 to 7.5 within a month and took abilify from 2.5 to 0

Currently

Remeron 7.5

Vitamin d 5,000 iu taking for about 3 years

October 2014 added fish oil/omega 3 1000 mg per day

Levothyroxitine 100 10 years or so

Dec 2014 started tapering 10% every 10 days-no problems.

August 2015 down to 0.1 mg

Woke up with severe anxiety-sleep issues-racing thoughts-depression. 9/9/15 up dose 1 mg.

Ali,

I am still on 1 mg. experienced a window lasting Thursday to Friday. Since then more symptoms. Sleep deprivation being a big one for me. ( I'm sure you get that).

How about you?

What are your current symptoms?

 The hardest symptom , is the  " insomnia ".   It's not the only one , but it's the most challenging , and the hardest to deal with !         :)

Hi Ali,

Thanks for posting on my thread :)  I'm sorry you're still struggling with sleep issues. Like Mel, I found sleep 'meditations' helpful when I wasn't getting much sleep. My favorite was  Jody Whiteley, she has a popular yourtube channel. Sleep hypnosis didn't always work to put me to sleep, but it would keep me calm and give me something to listen to while I was awake.

 

For me, the key technique for overcoming episodes of insomnia has been not adding secondary anxiety to it by struggling against it, but accepting that I'm not going to sleep and finding ways to remain calm with non-stimulating distractions from any anxious thoughts.

 

My mum, who is now in her eighties, has had problems with sleep for years, but she's learned to not let it bother her. She will wake up several times through the night and be wide awake and start ruminating. So she switches on the TV or continues reading her book, often getting up and making herself some tea, eventually she falls back to sleep. My dad ended up moving into the spare room, because he was getting disturbed by all the night time activity, that seemed to work better for both of them.

 

Its amazing how little sleep humans can get by with, I think its the worrying about it which is worse and tends to exacerbate the problem.

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

2010-2012Cymbalta 120mg

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

March 2016 , 21mg

Hi Petunia.Thank you. I try not to worry about the withdrawal insomnia.It is what it is.  I go through the motions of what I have to do no matter how little sleep I get. If I haven't slept a wink I haul myself to the gym anyway and just do it. I work through it the best that I can. I know it's temporary.

 

Unfortunately, it does heighten neuro -emotions brought on by stress in withdrawal. I've been dealing with this a lot lately and it's  debilitating.I'm finding the emotional symptoms harder to deal with than the physical.

For some strange reason I seem to be suffering from the opposite of insomnia, I just can't seem to get enough sleep. I have to force myself out of bed each morning and still feel tired. But I have had had bouts of insomnia and it affects me badly emotionally. The less sleep the worst the anxiety. I do hope you are able to manage the depressive aspect as best you can. It isnt easy :-(

Hi all. I feel like I've finally crumbled and I'm finding it so tiring. It seems that no matter how hard I try I can't seem to get past these symptoms and the worst is the depression and insomnia.

I'm still fighting but it just seems like a daily struggle at the moment. If I could get some sleep it would be tolerable.

Started with psycho meds/psychiatric care circa 1988.  In retrospect, and on contemplation, situational overwhelm.

Rounding up to 30 years of medications(30 medication trials, poly-pharmacy maximum was 3 at one time).

5/28/2015-off Adderal salts 2.5mg. (I had been on that since hospital 10/2014)

12/2015---just holding, holding, holding, with trileptal/oxcarb at 75 mg. 1/2 tab at hs.  My last psycho med ever!  Tapered @ 10% every 4 weeks, sometimes 2 weeks to

2016 Dec 16 medication free!!

(((((Hugs)))))) Sorry it's so incredibly difficult right now. I know you've been through hell.

 

What I wonder is this..and feel free to ignore if this doesn't fit. Maybe you've reached a place where something else besides fighting is called for? Like surrendering to the emotions? I find this very confusing myself. There are times where it is mostly neuroemotions, so riding my bike or "doing" something is the answer. But there are others, where what I need to do is not do. Sit down in the middle of it and let myself feel the depth of sadness, loneliness, frustration, existential angst, or whatever is there. Put on sad music and let the tears out. Sit with the discomfort of not knowing, of not being in control.

 

This is my take on one aspect of abuse. It makes letting go, setting down, and surrendering very difficult. Perhaps it is associated in us with feeling helpless and out of control, as we did in the past. We can become very uncomfortable with any kind of stillness, emptiness, or space....but we also need those aspects in order to find deeper healing, at least IMO.

 

The other thing I'm wondering about is whether you're doing any form of meditation practice. I notice when I decrease the time I'm spending with that, the other symptoms seem to ramp up. I see it as a balancing act. Giving the nervous system some safe stimulation through exercise for example, but giving it the ability to slow down through qi gong. Doing tends to make us feel stronger in some respects, so maybe we prefer that. But without rest of some kind (and you're not sleeping very well), the nervous system is going to stay ramped up in most of us.

 

Just my thoughts and maybe it has nothing to do with what you need right now..but wanted to put it out there.

Remeron for depression. Started at 7.5 mg. in 2005. Gradual increases over 8 years, up to 45 mg. in 2012.Began tapering in June 2013. Went from 45 to 30 mg in the first 3-4 months. Held for a couple of months.Started tapering by 3.75 mg every month or 2, with some longer holding periods. Eventually went down to 3.75 mg. about April 2014. Stopped taking Remeron August 2014. Developed issues with histamine a week after stopping--symptoms reduced through diet and a few supplements. Currently having issues with a few foods. Most of the histamine intolerance has resolved or is at least, in remission.

Current Medications:

Current Supplements: Cannabis (CBD and THC), Vitamin C, D, Quercetin, CoQ10, Tart Cherry, Probiotic, Phytoplankton oil, magnesium, Methyl B. What has helped me most: spending time in nature, qi gong, exercise, healthy diet, meditation, IV vitamins, homeopathy, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, music, and cuddling my cats..

Free, thank you. The depression has come back with a vengeance. It's really blindsided me. I was not prepared for how quickly it can hit - feels like a tsunami.

So sorry the depression is back. We have to endure so many symptoms in withdrawal but for me the depression is the worst. I can just about  handle most of the physical stuff but I feel just like you when it hits me out of the blue.

15 yrs on 20 to 30 mgs CITALOPRAM.  MAY 2014 Increased to 40 mgs per day.SEPT/NOV 2014 tapered in 6 weeks down to 10 mgs as per Dr instructions due to violent nightmares/palpitations.Given Noctamid (lormetazepam) to help with anxiety. On average took 2mg per day for 8 weeks.No taper was advised.DEC 2014 WD severe. Nervous tic in eyes and limbs, muscle pain,fluct  temp, weakness, dep and anxiety, nausea, giddy, unstable when walking. Different Dr suggested taking 20mgs CIT. BROMAZEPAM 3mgs up to 3 x daily for anxiety.DEC 9 2014 Updose CIT to 30mgs. Only taking BROMAZEPAM in emergency.DEC 31 2014 Settling at 30mg CIT - helping with depression. No Brom for 2wks.Found SA.APR 2015 Trying to stabilise on 30mgs CIT.  JAN 2016 Started Cit Taper reducing by 5% per month.  28.5 mgs 
FEB  Taper held bereavement. APR Taper resumed 27mgs . MAY 25.50 mgs .  JUNE 24 mgs .  JULY I stupidly mixed up my BP meds with CIT. Consequently took no CIT for 3 days and doubled my BP meds. Waiting for the fallout....Holding for a while until any chance of repercussions have abated. SEPT taper resumed to  22.5 mgs . OCT 21 mgs .NOV 19.95 mgs DEC crashed. 2017: FEB 3rd updose to 20.5 mgs to try to stabilise.FEB.switched over to 75mgs of Venlafaxine XR for 3 weeks.Too stimulating so switching back to Cit. 12 March 37.5 Ven and 20 Cit. 21 March 18mg Ven 20mg Cit. 4 April 9mg Ven 20mg Cit. Xanax .50mg when needed.  13 April 0 mgs Ven, 20mg Citalopram. Xanax .50 mg per day. 5 May reinstated a small amount of Ven to stabilize  1 mg twice a day. 20 mg Citalopram at night. Xanax .25 mg twice per day.Other Meds: Losartan (BP)Started 1993 at  50 mgs at night.  Seretide (Asthma) Started 1996 at 1 puff twice a day. Jan 2019 Antibiotic Ceclor 500mgs twice a day for bronchitis and  Atrovent 2ml capsules twice a day for asthma. Finished the course of both Jan 17. 

XANAX  Jan 27  - Feb 3 2019 Failed Valium Crossover.   Feb 14 2019  Updosed Xanax by .0625  Feb 17 2019 Decreased Xanax by .0625. Back to .50mg daily.  Update Xanax 28.2.20 tapered to .1250 mg 8am .25 mg midnight. Update Xanax 11.8.21 tapered to .25 mg at night. 

Current Meds 28.2.19: CITALOPRAM  20mg  taken at midnight. VENLAFAXINE  .9 mg twice a day at 8am and 10pm.  XANAX .50 mg split into 4 doses per day. 10am .0625mg / 2pm .1250mg/ 6pm .0625mg / midnight .25mg.Update 10.8.22 .25 mg at night.  LOSARTAN 50 mgs taken at midnight.  SERETIDE 1 puff taken at 8am and 10pm.   7.7.19 VENLAFAXINE UPDATE: Started tapering 10% every 4 weeks. I agree with free. I am sitting with my pain more deeply for maybe the first time in my life. It hurts so much, but is healing as I am not running from the source, but to it, feeling it and shedding burdens that were never mine to carry.

 

The pain is excruciating at times. More than I feel bearable, but do you know what? As survivors, we are stronger and capable of bearing more than we ever believe possible.

 

There are spaces in my day that I never previously allowed as space always equaled thinking time which equaled trauma. Now the spaces are an opportunity for self care, engaging (on a very low level), relaxation or education. I replace painful spaces with cooking, creating, cuddling (cats or humans) or meditation.

 

You have more strength than you believe. You will get through this painful time.

 

Lean into the pain, feel and express it. Purge your body and mind of it. Then it has less power to scare or depress you.

 

You are a beautiful person, worthy of a beautiful, creative, loving, fruitful life.

 

You deserve to shed the pain that you currently feel. Allow yourself to do this. The source of your pain was never of your doing.

 

Be gentle and kind with yourself.

Discontinued in under 1 week -> Oct 12 -   October 2014 Escitalopram - 10mg prescribed. Started on 5mg and worked up to 10mg in 2.5mg increments  -> Oct 2014  - 5mg; 30/03/15 2.5mg; 15/04/15 3.5mg; 20/05/15 2.9mg;  19/09/15 2.8mg; 30/10/15 2.7mg; 13/11/15 2.6mg. Holding until March.

Diet:  mostly pescatarianl & lots of veg. Weekly offal for b vitamins.  Turmeric, nigella seeds, avocados, apple cider vinegar, coconut products daily. Lots of fluids: water, lemon juice, coconut water, herbal & green tea (decaffeinated).

Supplements: vitamin C 4000mg, Omega 3 fish oil - high DPA & EHA, vitamin E 400iu, vitamin D3 5000mg (Winter only - from sun in Spring / Summer), probiotics.

Current Symptoms: chronic fatigue, erratic sleep, extreme photophobia, eye floaters, noise sensitivity, tinnitus, cognitive & speech difficulties, dizziness, irregular gait, poor co ordination, severe facial and upper body muscle tension, head and neck pressure.

Coping Strategies: good nutrition, cooking, gardening & growing my own food, cycling, dancing, yoga, photography, sewing & creative pursuits, self massage, pampering, meditation, journalling, nature, cuddling cats & humans, laughter & humour, gratitude, self care, aromatherapy, audio books, word games & believing in myself, my potential and my future.

Hi AliG, I'm so sorry you are dealing with the depression again. It is awful, I know, and I fear it coming back to bite me as well. I wonder though if you are pushing yourself a little too hard and need to just rest more? I was sleeping 10-12 hours a day for months it seemed and I think my body just needed the rest to try to repair all the damage to my nervous system. Now I sleep a more normal 7-8 hours a night and I sleep hard for a good 6 hours I would say. I guess I am just saying that I wonder if a better approach is just to listen to your body and rest when you are tired, instead of pushing through? But I am NOT saying that this setback is your fault at all, because I completely understand the desire to want to catch up on all that we've missed once we start feeling better. It is just a learning process and each of our journey's is different. Just be kind and gentle with yourself, both physically and emotionally and mentally, because this is temporary and it will pass and you will feel better. Windows and waves, windows and waves, this wave will soon pass.... (((HUGS))) and prayers.  

2005-2009, Lexapro 10 - 20 mg, CT WD w/severe depression and anxiety:  2010-2015, Paxil, 30 - 40 mg, tapered off at 10 mg/week, moderate anxiety and depression:  2010-2015, Clonozapam 0.25 mg, as needed for anxiety and sleep:  1/10/2015, Zoloft 25 mg, tried to increase to 50 and 75, but nausea and dizziness:  2/13/2015, Paxil 5 mg, added back after 2 weeks at zero to reduce WD:  2/28/2015, Paxil 10 mg, increased from 5 mg to reduce WD, HOLDING:  3/04/2015, Zoloft discontinued (reduced to ~12.5 mg on 2/19, ~6.25 mg on 2/26, then zero):  4/26/2015, Paxil starting 10% taper (no scale so was inadvertently at 20% taper, yikes!):  4/30/2015, Paxil 10 mg, reinstated (WD disappeared between August 2015 and May 2016)

5/02/2016, Started 10% taper, reinstated to 10 mg on 5/11/16:  4/29/2017, Last dose of Paxil (working with holistic psychiatrist, lots of supplements to aid WD):  Primary symptoms: apathy, demotivation, anhedonia, fatigue, stress intolerance, moderate social anxiety

7/1/2018 Finally feeling like myself again, success!!! Praise God! Even with the stress of relocating recently, I am feeling pretty good most of the time now. Granted, I eat healthy, I exercise, I don't drink caffeine or alcohol and I try hard find a healthy balance of quiet and social times. Hang in there and keep the faith, you can do it too!

Sertraline 100mg amytrip 60mg diazepam 4mg (and when needed) since late 90's.Reduced all meds over 6 wks (too short) last doses 13 wks ago.Still having withdrawals.I would have done it differently

5th august 2015 reinstated 5mg amytripiline.increased to 10mg amtrip 9th sept 2015.

went on Prozac 1994-99,60mg.poopout ct  back on 2001-2002,prozac weekly 2002,not working,Effexor 75 mg.?2003-mar.2004 gaining weight 8wk. taper,wellbutrin 150 mg.mar. -may 2004 ctmedfree til july 2005 back to Prozac gaining weight again,back on wellbutrin jan.2006150-300 mg.bad constipation.also was taking aygestin(hormone)perimenopausal irregular bleeding.back on Prozac around sept,?2006,hysterectomy jan30.2007(adenomyosis)off&on Prozac til 2009,citalopram about 1 mo, April 2010 no effect,Effexor again may -mar, 2011.ct,Prozac aug,-dec, 2011 &sept-nov 2012,paroxetine oct,23 2013-may 4 2014 20 mgs.tapered 6 wks.-failed RI in Oct.2014-in protracted WD.started 10 mgs. Fluoxetine May 25 2021 .Stopped fluoxetine May 2022 at 5 mgs.

June 2014 abilify 2.5 remeron wasn't working so abilify was then added

September 2014 woke up with anxiety x 100!!!!

Pdoc then took me from 45 to 7.5 within a month and took abilify from 2.5 to 0

Currently

Remeron 7.5

Vitamin d 5,000 iu taking for about 3 years

October 2014 added fish oil/omega 3 1000 mg per day

Levothyroxitine 100 10 years or so

Dec 2014 started tapering 10% every 10 days-no problems.

August 2015 down to 0.1 mg

Woke up with severe anxiety-sleep issues-racing thoughts-depression. 9/9/15 up dose 1 mg.

I found this meditation for releasing trauma recently. I have found it helpful and soothing during times when I've felt overwhelmed. It helped me to slow down and release negative thoughts. Maybe you might like to try it and see if it helps?

Hi Ali, 

 

It takes a certain courage and strength to just allow and let be...whether it's depression or something else. I've found that building physical strength has helped me enter those places, and not feel as buried by them. I think with abuse, we are wired to believe that surrender is weak..and that we need to keep fighting, no matter what the costs. But there is a cost to it...on all levels of being.

 

I really encourage you to try out some different meditations. If you haven't checked out Tara Brach, it's worth looking at her site: http://www.tarabrach.com/She has lots of free talks and meditations...she has a kind, gentle, humorous approach to things. Her books are good too...I really found her Cd set on Radical Acceptance and healing shame to be very helpful. I worked with Tara for a number of years. 

Remeron for depression. Started at 7.5 mg. in 2005. Gradual increases over 8 years, up to 45 mg. in 2012.Began tapering in June 2013. Went from 45 to 30 mg in the first 3-4 months. Held for a couple of months.Started tapering by 3.75 mg every month or 2, with some longer holding periods. Eventually went down to 3.75 mg. about April 2014. Stopped taking Remeron August 2014. Developed issues with histamine a week after stopping--symptoms reduced through diet and a few supplements. Currently having issues with a few foods. Most of the histamine intolerance has resolved or is at least, in remission.

Current Medications:

Current Supplements: Cannabis (CBD and THC), Vitamin C, D, Quercetin, CoQ10, Tart Cherry, Probiotic, Phytoplankton oil, magnesium, Methyl B. What has helped me most: spending time in nature, qi gong, exercise, healthy diet, meditation, IV vitamins, homeopathy, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, music, and cuddling my cats..
