So bit of an update. Made myself stay in bed a couple of days and I must be feeling better because I’m bored as hell. I feel a bit more physically resilient and can definitely feel myself becoming more emotionally resilient again. Trying to think of some things I could do that aren’t stressful that might make me feel good (there’s some stressful stuff going on at the moment). Will definitely take the dog for a walk tomorrow at a minimum. Wish I could stop this damn tinnitus. At times it drives me crazy. Soon I’ll be able to post three days of symptoms and plan the next steps in tapering for when I’ve reached WD Stability. Hopefully  that’s not too far away if I look after myself.

Age 16 (1995 - 2000) -Paroxetine
Age 21 (2000-2004) - Effexor 37.5mg
Age 24 (2004-2012) - Lexapro (70mg), Xanax minimum 2mg Xanax a day
About 32 (2012-2017?) - Every mood stabiliser under the sun (not at the same time) and minimum 2mg Xanax a day; occasional amisulpride
About 35 (2017-current) - Lurasidone 80 mg, quickly titrated down to 40mg, Pristiq (50 mg), minimum of 2mg Xanax a day
About 41 (2020) Switched from Xanax to clonazepam and started tapering at 0.125 mg each reduction, tapered off Pristiq with a cross taper at the end, low dose of dextroamphetamine.
Age 42 (2021) Tried to taper off Lurasidone three times. Quick taper from 40mg to 0 mg over a couple of months the first time. Reinstated at 20mg. Tried twice more to taper from 20 mg to 0 mg dropping by 5 mg each reduction (about every 2 weeks).
Age 42-43 (April 2022) 20mg-18mg; May 18mg-16mg; June 16-14mg; September 14-12mg; September 12-14mg reinstated. February 2023 - hiccup with brand change, Back to Apotek brand and switch to homemade suspension.

Hello, cobber!  Did I use that right?  Had an aussie friend who would call us that and I don't know if it meant friend or a**hole, could go either way knowing him!   :D

My therapist told me that EMDR has some connection to walking in the woods, like that's how it was first discovered or something.  I dunno, I always feel better after a nature walk, so I'll take that as a cue to go out more often!

I didn't know you've got the EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.  It used to drive me nuts, legit kept me up at night and worse, honestly.  Nowadays I always have a white noise machine on or a fan to distract from it and I haven't noticed it in years.

Glad to hear you're feeling better.  You sound great, FWIW.

I didn't catch the time line for your tapering, but now that you're down so much from your starting point, what does it feel like from when you started?   As much as I want to be off this stuff, I think coming down bit by bit is really going to help me readjust and recalibrate all the senses.

I am not a doctor and do not offer any medical advice, only my own experience.  Consult your physician.

2011-2015 tapered off 300MG of Effexor.  Back in the Paxil Progress days.  No rebound.

Haha I love that you’re not sure whether you just called me an ar*ehole or not but used it anyway 😂 Actually cobber means friend or mate but you only really hear the old guys in the outback use it these days.

Me too but it’s been a bit of an effort to get out. It always makes me feel better when I make the effort though. Will have to do this more. I think we all need to try focus on the good stuff when we can to make us more resilient when the hard times hit.

Haha it sounds exactly like that. It’s only turned up in the last week really but hasn’t left. I’m sure it will pass as everything else has on this journey. It’s easy to forget that it will pass when you’re struggling and you get bogged down in it. Damn WD!

I didn't catch the time line for your tapering, but now that you're down so much from your starting point, what does it feel like from when you started?

So in hindsight my reductions until now have been hectic. I started a linear reduction of clonazepam quite a while ago, dropping 0.125 mg (quarter of a tablet) at a time under DRs order. That was tolerable as I was also on Lurasidone which was prescribed for depression. The Lurasidone acted as a buffer for the withdrawal I thin. The last time I dropped was intolerable though (4th last drop of the linear taper) and I decided to hold. I then decided I wanted off the Lurasidone and that’s where it got tricky. I started at 40mg and tried to taper down to 0 over about 6 weeks. Waves of anxiety and body fatigue were so intense that immediately went back on it. I tried again a couple of months later not knowing what I was doing and the same thing happened. I reinstated at 20mg and waited a couple of months. I confirmed with my DR that I was, indeed tapering correctly and tried one more time. What surprise the exact same thing happened so I reinstated at 20mg and started a linear taper, dropping 2 mg every 3-4 weeks. And my withdrawal symptoms got steadily worse but I didn’t know that’s what it was. I just thought it was poor mental health. I stopped when I got to 14mg as I started to suspect what was happening. I held for a couple of months going through absolute hell and then started to improve a bit (not completely but a bit). So I tried dropping by 2 mg again, hit the deck, found this website (September) and reinstated the 2 mg and have been holding ever since (about 2 months). How am I now compared to how I started. There are fewer withdrawal symptoms at a time now as I slowly stabilise. And many of them are greatly reduced. The way I experience them has changed though in that I feel them much more deeply now as I don’t have the buffer of the med itself if that makes sense. I feel everything much more deeply now (not all the time but a lot of the time). So while the symptoms are less my reaction to them can get be stronger I think. I’m also much more susceptible to any stress at the moment and stress seems to trigger my symptoms so I’m working a lot on managing stress instead of just pushing it down which is what I did when I was on meds properly. Finally, sorry for the long post, I think I continue to feel better each time I have a window (my last one I felt really pretty good) but it feels like my waves are getting worse also. I appear to be coming out of this last wave slowly and hope that if I practise proper self care (minimising stress and working on better coping tools) I’ll start to stabilise properly. I do feel like I am close to stabilising based on the last month and I am really keen (and nervous) to start tapering again and continue getting this crap out of my system. Again, sorry for the long post but I guess it’s a bit of a story

Hi admin, I have to have a wisdom tooth out son which involves taking antibiotics and panadeine forte (paracetamol with codeine). Are there meds I should definitely be avoiding? I don’t want to trigger a wave. I will be taking as little panadeine as possible but apparently I have to have the antibiotics.

thanks

It’s been a rollercoaster. Hopefully holding and tapering slowly will put an end to that and the rest of the taper will just be times of discomfort.

That’s what’s most important. Maybe hold where you are for a while before trying to reduce?

Thank you so much. The anxiety is the worst part by far. That seems to be the one but I can’t handle…… once I have stabilised I will be coming off VERY slowly to minimise the anxiety as much as possible. Also be prepared for all your emotions to come back and it can feel REALLY strong so lots of self care and I highly recommend a good therapist as support. But we’ll support you too so don’t forget that!

I have no plans to begin tapering until after Christmas and might wait until February. I want to be stable for quite some time before I begin the process.

Thankfully, I already have a therapist and have been in intense therapy three nights a week for a few weeks so am building coping skills to try and handle the anxiety. I appreciate the support here as well ❤️

Hi Thorin.  On the antibiotics do avoid any fluoroquinilones.  And especially as you are on a benzo still.  Even if not on a benzo that class has caused difficulties for many.  Of course we have a topic too.  I'm on my android so difficult to link you to ....but do a quick search from your main browser: survivingantidepressants.org antibiotics and you'll find more information and other members experiences.  And oh yes FF....holding for the holidays is a wise move!  Best all. Here it is:

Hoping it won't require more than Amoxicillin for wisdom tooth extraction.

So will be posting three days of symptoms today but briefly, feeling much improved this morning. Woke up feeling calmer. Seems to go with not feeling my emotions as strongly. Still working out how that works. Maybe feels like the Lurasidone is having more of an effect? Just a guess. Tinnitus is still present but less anxiety provoking, akathisia still present but minimal. Has been a steady, very gradual continual improvement over the last few days. Hopefully things continue in this direction.

So still improving from this latest wave. Took the dog for a walk (went in bare feet and ended up with massive blisters 🙄. Skin sensitivity or lack of common sense 🤷‍♂️? Had my first cold shower in 3 days. This is usually a daily practise. Some cog fog and the tinnitus of course. Cog fog is to be expected after three days hiding in bed. So the biggest residual for this wave is the fear that it will happen again and the strong feeling that I can’t trust my mind and body. Not sure what I can do about that except give it time. Total time of this wave from beginning to (nearly) end is just under two weeks. Some really valuable lessons learned about not pushing myself into really stressful situations, and if I’m going to do difficult therapy I need to REALLY take care of myself afterwards. This was probably the hardest wave yet due to the severe depression I experienced and the extreme terror I felt on one day which I now believe was triggered by an accidental double dose of Lurasidone which resulted in some withdrawals. For the people that checked in during this time i really appreciate it. I believe it’s essential for us to feel like we’re not alone in this and feeling connected will definitely help speed up the process.

Hi admin, I’m having some adverse reactions when I take my Lurasidone at 1900. Anxiety kicks in (tolerable but difficult) and a few other things. Just confirming that if I push the dose back to later in the evening I should only move it by one hour each day?

Thanks

Hi @Shep, here’s my symptom/drug log for three days as discussed. I’d like to highlight that I’m just coming out of a strong wave which you’ll see in my symptoms. Still not sure whether I should be dropping clonazepam or Lurasidone first. Would still be good to come with a game plan for the clonazepam. I think I have one for the Lurasidone. Thanks

Wednesday Bad

Didn’t really sleep. Taking a few days off work. Feel very shaky this morning and weak. Combination of withdrawal and Clonidine maybe. Tinnitus present. Some akathisia.

0830 0.125mg clonazepam

0930 0.3 ml CBD:THC oil

1130 handful of blueberries. Not much appetite or energy. Feel pretty strung out. Sort of vibration feeling in chest. Can’t relax. Constant Tinnitus.

1230 on the edge of deep depression but seem to be just keeping it at bay. Still have no energy.

1300 0.125mg clonazepam. Tinnitus. Strong depression but not critical at the moment. Ate some homemade salsa. About a cup full.

1345 mood seems to be improving incrementally. Watched a tv show. It gave me anxiety to watch it (too stimulating maybe) and was hard to concentrate. Made myself finish it. I think things improved incrementally as I watched it.

1440 0.2ml CBD:THC oil

1700 akathisia not too bad right now. Mood feels wobbly but not bad. Feels like it could be shook easily.

1730 0.2 ml CBD:THC oil

1845 anxiety building up.

1900 14mg Lurasidone. Ate some beetroot. Anxiety came on the same time yesterday roughly.

2000 I think I just self soothed the anxiety mostly away. I’ve never done that before. Feeling calm relative to how I have been.

2045 bowl of homemade chilli and rice and a small bowl of ice cream. Fish oils and D3

2100 0.2 ml CBD:THC oil (2mg THC)

2200 0.2 ml CBD:THC oil (2mg THC)

2230 0.125 mg clonazepam. Magnesium.

Thursday bad

5.5-6 hours sleep. Morning cortisol spike. Vivid dreams before waking. Feel stressed. Tinnitus.

7.45 0.5ml CBD oil

0830 0.125mg clonazepam. Did breathwork which destresses me but increases tinnitus. Seems like my main issue at the moment it emotional pain/stress and fragility as a result of that. And tinnitus.

0930 magnesium and health smoothie with milk kefir

0945 I seem to be improved this morning. A bit more resilient. Clearly a day in bed and some self care was what I needed. Tight around my head and some tinnitus.

1130 0.2ml CBD:THC oil

1300 0.125mg clonazepam

1330 sandwich

1715 tinnitus very loud

1830 three big handfuls of almonds a big milky tea with honey. Appetite definitely coming back.

1900 14mg Lurasidone

2025 seems taking Lurasidone brought on some body sensations and moderate anxiety.

2130 croissants with ham cheese and tomato for dinner

2140 dizziness. Focus keeps slipping. Waves of moderate anxiety. Very uncomfortable. This has been coming slightly later each day for the last few days.

2200 tinnitus currently louder than the tv.

2230 0.125 mg clonazepam. Symptoms still ramping up since I took the Lurasidone. Symptoms have hit in the afternoon prior to me taking the Lurasidone the last couple of days. Today it hit after I took the med. I wonder if it’s just getting later in the day each day or is related to the Lurasidone dose. Thumping in chest, slightly churning stomach, band around head, tinnitus, overstimulated by noise etc. thoughts slightly out of control.

2300 fish oil, D3 and magnesium

Friday

6 hours sleep. Small cortisol rush. Tinnitus present but less. Akathisia present but minimal. Emotions a bit numb but that’s welcome at the moment.

0830 0.125mg clonazepam

0930 feel like I may have some physical strength back.

1000 couple of cookies for breakfast. Definitely not eating how I normally would. Better than nothing though.

1115 magnesium and health smoothie with milk kefir.

1140 0.3ml CBD:THC oil (3mg THC)

1530 took dog for walk. Went in bare feet and somehow came home with massive blisters on both feet. Well done. Skin sensitivity or not thinking 🙄

1545 had my first cold shower in 3 days. This is usually a daily practice. Feels refreshing and centring.

1900 14mg Lurasidone. Watching tv super stimulating, gives me anxiety and a strange feeling in my chest.

1930 anxiety kicking in after taking Lurasidone again

2000 anxiety low-moderate. Tolerable. I wonder if it’s caused directly by the Lurasidone or whether it’s a response to stomach cramps etc from the drug effecting my system.

It looks like your appetite is scattered over these past few days. Before doing anything, please set up a meal and snack schedule. If you don't, you'll end up trying to change your drugs to mitigate low blood sugar symptoms, which likely won't work and may make things worse. For example, without a regular schedule for meals and snacks, you'll end up taking your drugs sometimes with food or around the same time you eat and sometimes without food. This can affect absorption and give you different results from the same drug and dose.

A good meal plan will include small meals and snacks eaten frequently, with plenty of water to stay hydrated. Meals and snacks with protein and little to no sugar, caffeine, or alcohol.

I wouldn't say that eating cookies for breakfast is better than nothing, especially if the cookies are high in sugar. This can cause reactive low blood sugar, which has many of the same symptoms as withdrawal - anxiety, tremors, depression / fatigue, etc.

Is vitamin D3 a new supplement for you? If so, when did you start it and what dose are you taking?

I would get on a set time and dose for the CBD oil. It's hard to say what's causing what with your drugs when your supplements are all over the place.

These are just a few suggestions to help you figure out what is causing what and what your next step should be. I would work on eating regularly and getting your supplements on a schedule.

Also, please let us know more about when you started taking D3.

Thanks for looking through this Shep. Yes my first this last wave has been all over the place. I’ll get back to my regular way of eating (which may need tweaking but is generally pretty healthy. I may need to eat more frequently.

The sugar is a recent edition. No alcohol currently and only caffeine from tea, not coffee.

I’ve been taking it on and off far a few years. A couple of months this last time maybe? Happy to cut it out to see what happens.

Ok, I can do this, I just need to think of the best way to do it. I’ve always used medicinal cannabis as an ‘as needed’ med. Take more when I’m struggling, less when I’m feeling good. I don’t want to take it if I don’t have to so I might eliminate the CBD oil as much as possible and just go back to having the CBD:THC in the evening.

Sorry to hear about the blisters but I have found that getting out with my two dogs is a big help. I often think I would have been holed up in my house for weeks if I didn't have them to bring out for walks.

Sorry to hear about the blisters but I have found that getting out with my two dogs is a big help. I often think I would have been holed up in my house for weeks if I didn't have them to bring out for walks.

Being holed up for three days was horrible enough.

So that was the smoothest wake up in a while. Woke up in the night but woke up again this morning feeling relatively calm, minimal symptoms, no cortisol spike. Another sign I’m heading in the right direction. Tinnitus still prominent. Wonder how long this window will last. If/when I have another wave I need to look back and see that I came out of it previously.

Saturday moderate
Maybe 5 hours sleep. Only symptom at wake up is tinnitus and mildest akathisia. No cortisol spike.
0830 0.125mg clonazepam
0915 2 handfuls almonds
1000 did breathing exercises
1030 tinnitus so loud.
1045 avocado and magnesium
1300 0.125mg clonazepam and health smoothie with milk kefir. Was able to clean the kitchen. Think I’m capable of more than I think I am. Just terrified of another wave kicking in.

1815 handful of olives 🫒
1915 0.2mo CBD:THC. Pushing Lurasidone back to 8 pm
2020 tinnitus worse after THC?
2040 didn’t get to take 14mg Lurasidone until now. Pretty frustrated. 2 chicken and salad wraps for dinner. Fish oil. Mood seems to have fallen a bit
2052 Some anxiety starting. Psychological maybe as that’s very soon after taking the med.
2130 must’ve been psychological. Not experiencing the Lurasidone side effects as much after taking it with food.

Hey Thorin,

Glad to hear you’re doing better!

do you mean you don’t normally have Lurasidone with food? You might already know, but that would decrease absorption by about 50% so your dose would be about 7mg without food!

July 2020 - Feb 2021 Risperidone 0.25 mg

I think for sure it will make a difference! If you’ve consistently been taking 14mg without food this whole time you might be able to decrease to 10mg WITH food! But if you want a break from withdrawal I’m sure “doubling your dose” by eating consistently with your doses from now on will make you feel better. Sorry I didn’t catch this earlier!

Thanks Sadie. I only just started posting food so nobody would’ve known. I don’t want to risk dropping the dose (too scared of withdrawal) so I think I’ll just stick with this dose. But if I start feeling better then I can restart my taper! Thanks so much for your help! I wish I had’ve known this earlier.

@Sadie1 ok wow so the food thing really is a thing. I’m meant to have at least 350 calories when I take it. Will be interesting to see how I go in the next week now that I’m taking it with food. Feel pretty stupid but oh well. I know now. Hope this helps!

Ya I have my Lurasidone with dinner at the same time every night so I don’t forget. I tried a snack later at night but it wasn’t enough food and I’d feel sick. 5:30 pm is very early for dinner but I don’t really feel sleepy anymore after taking it so it works :)

I hear that!   Last year when I started my taper all wrong, a kind poster on this site looked at what I was doing and pointed out I'd screwed up my dosages and when I was supposed to take them LOL   I used to be so careless.  Good on you for making it possible to get some new info!

I was SO careless. And if it effected me I wouldn’t have been in a headspace to even realise what was happening (I took my meds but didn’t think about it too much. Maybe was ashamed that I needed meds?)

Actually seems pretty common that people don’t know how to take their meds properly…..

It makes me uncomfortable that we seem to know more about these meds (as a group) than the medical professionals seem to. Guess they’re good for a broken arm but something as nuanced as psych meds we have to be wary.

Age 44 (August 2023 -restarted clonazepam taper). Start dose 0.375mg. 1/9/2023 - 0.365mg; 1/10/2023 - 0.324mg; 1/11/2023 - 0.264mg; 1/12/2023 - 0.25 mg (holding); 1/2/2024 - 0.232mg; 1/3/2024 - 0.221mg; 1/4/2024 - 0.205mg;

Health regimen: walks, hot/cold showers, ice baths, breathwork, mostly healthy diet, therapy...... Open to ideas! Supplements: Milk Kefir, Mag, Omega 3, CBD/THC.

Precisely this for me, except you said it better than I could.   I never even used a weekly pillbox or anything for most of the 30 years I've been on these.

I look on other forums and see people making the same mistakes I did.  Double dosing, forgetting to take pills, running out while on vacation or waiting for a script...I guess some lessons are learned the hard way!

Beautifully written.   You said it, as a group we know a thing or two about tapering.  Experience is a great teacher for sure.

The best teacher. Still, would’ve been good not to learn this stuff.
