@Sunflower414

I wish the low mood (depression) was the only symptom lol- horrible anxiety-brain burning and some crushing in-  loss of appetite again.😓  To bad-- I can tell my brain liking  less drug--but I have to go through the increase WD symptoms for a few days-- some how it always makes me regress into the negative spiral of "I am stuck like this" dark thoughts ugh---You know how that feels🙄--Crazy how the faint memory of feeling better is there in the far back recess of my brain but somehow we can't truly rely on the fact that this has come and gone and has passed before--The days can be long but they do go by--- today I listened to a few Therapy in a Nutshell sessions how to process your emotion- lessons 5 and 6

I also watched an interview with Mark Horowitz the other day about antidepressant Withdrawal and Management--how I wish doctors would incorporate this into there training.

If your interested https://youtu.be/PSjYH044-2Q

Have you noticed any increase in your symptoms after you take your Paxil?

Do you get a surge of anxiety-panic-restlessness?  What are your symptoms over all?

I am here for you♥️

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I'm doing very well. I found a therapist just by luck. I was following an author of a self-help book online, and he had a list of therapists in different areas that practice his type of CBT. There just happened to be one near me, and she turned out to be great. So I don't know how to tell you to find a good one....just keep looking. I can recommend the book we used in therapy. You can get it on Amazon, and you can actually use it by yourself. It's called "Mind Over Mood," by Dennis Greenberger and Christine Padesky. Lots of practical exercises to help you change your thinking to something more realistic and balanced.

Good luck to you!

A bit of an update.

I was raised by my grandma who passed this last week. I lived with her 25 out of the 28 years of my life. The grief is very strong. I imagine the WD makes it harder, but, I don’t really know.

im meeting with a new psychiatrist this week who acknowledges WD and is willing to taper my as slowly as I’d like. I’m hoping she is helpful to some degree, if anything, it’ll be nice to be somewhat understood by the prescriber.

thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers 🤍

thank you. It has been very hard. But I am hopeful about her - no, I spoke to her on the phone. She said she does not start anyone on new psych meds. I’d decline, anyways!!

Fellow long-term Paxil user having a brutal time coming off as well. I read a bit of your thread and related to a lot of it

2008: start Lexapro 10 mg which is quickly upped to 20 mg. 2008:2013 try at least four individual times to get off Lexapro, never get lower than 5mg, settle at 15 mg. 2015: again, attempt to get off Lexapro and get to 5 mg. After 6 months, feel i'm stabilizing but go back on a higher dose because of one stressful event. 2016: go to 20 mg from 15 mg due to work stresses, hit severe tolerance for the first time and become very suicidal. 2016-2017: try viibryd and cymbata in an attempt to feel better. Also add Lamictal 150 at some point. 2017: eventually land on paxil 37.5 and Lamictal 150. January 2018: cut paxil to 25. April-July 2018: reduce Lamictal in 50 mg increments till im off August. 2018: reduce paxil to 20 mg. december 2018: dropped Paxil to 18 mg, SEVERE CRASH. March updosed to 20 mg April 11: dropped to 19.4 mg due to akathsia (still experiencing akathsia symptoms from updose) April 20: 19 mg Paxil May 4: 18.7 Paxil July 5: 18.2 July 12: 17.8 Aug 19: 17.5 Aug 26: 17.3 Oct 20: 17.1 Nov 3: 16.9, 8/17/20: 16.6 after nine month hold, 8/24/20: 16.4, 8/31/20:16.2, 9/14/2020: 16.0, 9/21/20: 15.8, 9/28/20: 15.6, 10/19/20:15.4, 10/26/20: 15.2, 11/2/20: 15.1, 11/7/20: 14.8, 3/6/2-: 14.5, 3/20/20: 14.3, 4/3/20: 13.9, 4/10/2021: 13.7. 4/21/21: 13.5, 5/5/2021: 13.1, 12.2 8/12/2021 (slowly microtapered to this number. Thank you @Greatful I have had a decent 12 days, I'm thrilled. I needed this break. I will still be holding here for awhile. How are you?

I don't know many people who were prescribed these meds at a young age (7 years old for me) and knew of one girl who did and successfully got off. she has been off for 2 years and has decided to go back as her WD symptoms are still very severe.

Does anyone have resources on how to not fear this? I am suffering badly still, 2 years into WD, and the thought that this could stick around even 2 years off the medications triggers that hopeless feeling in me that I can't improve.

My family members are still very concerned and often suggest medications to stop this suffering. I hope that this is WD, but part of my wonders if this is just the "real me" as I have been on meds since I was 7 years old.

Thank you all ❤️

Who is the girl you were talking about?

I'm sorry for your suffering.

I know it can feel so impossibly long and arduous. When the neuro-emotions have a hold of us it can be so hard not to doubt and question everything, most of all ourselves.

You can do this, Sunflower. I have every confidence in you.

Yes, it can take a long time. You are dealing with a lot, incl. recent profound loss. You are very brave and stronger than you know.

Be gentle with yourself and give yourself the gift of time. You have so much going for you and you are still so young, this is working to your advantage with healing. And healing IS happening, healing is happening all the time, even when we don't consciously feel it.

As Greatful so perfectly put it, hang in there; breathe. It gets better <3

Remember those 12 decent days -- that is very real evidence things are moving in the right direction. Seal that memory in your heart and let it shine its light through darker days. We will be here to remind you of it, too.

Thinking of you and sending healing vibes, wishing you moments of peace and relief <3

Thank you @Greatful, my symptoms are much of the usual. Terror, intrusive thoughts, depression, crying spells, nightmares, doom, jerking, etc. Nothing quite new. It is crazy how I can feel better in a window and in one day it all comes rushing back. I will take a look and try to find some that were medicated at a young age to chat with them. The girl I am referring to I met on FB.

@Ariel I am trying to hold onto those good days and remember they will come again. It Is hard when we don't know how long it will be until we have another decent day. How are you doing? Thanks for the reminder to give myself the gift of time.

@Escitalopram21 it it called a GeneSight test. Honestly I think it's pointless. And nice! No, I do not live in Finland. I'm in the States. But If I ever get better I'd love to visit. Where do you live?

@Roserdl Nice! I hope and pray that the diet brings you relief of some kind.

Has anyone gone to a hospital during withdrawal for assistance or help? I am doing so poorly and my family is very worried about me. They think I need to go to a hospital of some kind. I would be open to it if they would know how to help or bring relief, but I am unsure of what they would do to help. Does anyone have experience with this?

Anytime I've been to the hospital/psych ward they've had nothing to offer but drugs, and lots of them.

There have been a few times when it felt like checking myself in was a necessity because I was afraid it wasn't safe for me to be by myself. In that sense a hospital can potentially, theoretically offer a protective environment where one is monitored -- but only in theory; in practice I never felt safe at the hospital, only controlled.

Withdrawal is not acknowledged or recognized to be real by 99.9% of the medical profession, so I don't see what sort of assistance or help they'd be able to offer when they do not understand the issue. I would be worried that they'd suck you back into the psychiatric system, misdiagnose you and try to put you on a drug cocktail for your symptoms. If you want off of these medications, if I were you I'd steer clear of psychiatry entirely from now on.

I'm really sorry there aren't better options out there. I often daydream about starting some sort of holistic withdrawal center where people can come live in gentle community, in beautiful natural surroundings, and go through WD without psychiatry or drugs. Learn non-drug coping techniques together and practice patience and acceptance supported by nature and nurture. Wouldn't that be beautiful?

I'm sorry you're going through such a difficult time. It sounds challenging to field your family's worries. Do they accept that you're going through WD? Have you had a chance to watch the Mark Horowitz video that Greatful sent you? Maybe you could watch it together with your family.

@Sunflower414

I went to the hospital back in 2014. From what I know now it looks like I was in  a over confused cns from wd drugs and kindling.   I thought the same thing, I wanted help and they were the place to go.  The  doctor that was assigned to me had his combo of drugs that he talked up. The one I was on was in his "opinion"  he dismissed and almost snickered like it was obsolete.  His wonder drugs were Vybred and Seroquel, so the switch was on.  Sadly I left there worse then I went in. If I remember right, I started the Seroquel for sleep and then fast taper  over from the antidepressant I was on to  Vybrid  my brain became very foggy, as they raised the Vybrid dose it got worse,  shortly after I took it I could hardly walk, felt light head and faint, drugged.  I remember walk down the hall to my room close to wall so I wouldn't fall or faint.   I told the nurse and the doctor just decreased it to a lower dose.  I left the hospital and spiraled.  It got so bad at home that I had to get off of it.  Basically the doctors will have their drug  cocktail of choice ( that's what my hubby calls it lol) and do the drug switch and off you go.  My insurance let me stay about a week.   I went in with huge anxiety and waves of panic, low mood, came out worse. I couldn't stabilize and my doctor thought maybe  I should go back to the hospital but my hubby and I decided he would be there for me and keep my safe.  Then came the poly drugging. I guess you can say it didn't help me.

If you feel unsafe alone then you for safety reasons you might consider it.

I don't know if they will let you come in for safety reasons (monitoring) and not add or change drugs.

I am so sorry that you feel so bad that you are considering it. To feel so unwell is so scary, my heart goes out to you.  Our thoughts can create such a scary place.  I struggle at time to remind myself that this is all in our minds that it really can't do anything more then what it is doing now...

If you have someone with you can you try to hold out a  little longer.  You had a 12 day window that surely is a good indication that it will happen again and again.  I had to remind myself several times in the last year that even if you go in or try a new drug it will not fix you overnight, you will still have to wait it out.  My big fear  also was what happens if a new  drug makes it worse, be the last straw in my already confused, angry brain and weakened state.  At least I knew what I was dealing with now and try to trudge forward and get through the day.

I saw  Julia995  she was 5 years old and made it.  I saw you posted to her, did she ever get back to you?  Try to find some other success stories of children medicated at a early age.

We have a hold of you Sunflower. Do you feel us holding you up♥️

Sorry to butt into your thread but want to chime in on your family's wish to put you in hospital as they are concerned about you.

I cannot comment on your situation except to say that you recently lost someone who may as well have been a parent as you lived with them for most of your life and you recently had a 12 day window which suggests a level of healing even after the loss of this person.

In my own situation I was not drugged from aged 7; however I was drugged often with no informed consent and against my will for five years in my twenties.  I  went back on drugs  due to insomnia and back pain in 2007; I cold turkeyed off a drug in 2014 and went on new drugs; then I came off a drug (on doctor's orders) after a 8 month taper.

Towards the end of the taper and for a year and four months afterwards, very, very strong pressure was put on me by various family members - a psychiatrist amongst them  - to go into hospital again.  I had many of the symptoms that you describe above.  Eventually I did agree to a 'remote' admission.  Like yourself I just wanted relief and I was frightened because of the severity of the symptoms.

I did not go into hospital in person because it was the height of the first lock down caused by the pandemic and I would have had to self isolate afterwards on my own which  I was told was inadvisable.  Instead I was 'treated' if you can call it that remotely.  The doctor I was assigned was a complete 'bee' and I asked for a change of team.  I got kicked out of the facility as a result.

When I look back on that time now I heave a huge sigh of relief that I was kicked out.  I know all that would have happened was that I would have been put on yet another drug and that once in hospital as you probably know, I wouldn't have had much choice in what drug I was put on.  I would almost certainly have been polydrugged.  I might have even been given ECT as that facility is one of the only centers in the country I am from that frequently uses that 'therapy'.

As it was, once I was kicked out and still suffering with severe symptoms and the belief that I still needed the 'right med',  I had a few crisis meetings eventually with local free mental health service who were more sympathetic with me and actually quite compassionate.  I was still holding out for drugs so they gave me some Seroquel but ... and this is the crucial part....as I was not in hospital I was in charge of my own dosage.  I asked for Seroquel and I was given the amount I requested.  Over the next few months, I used the Seroquel and found out that it caused bowel problems - I tapered it myself.  By December of 2020 I had really started to question the whole pharma thing again - ie. that there was drug to fix my problem.  I gave up the Seroquel in December 2021.

The severe symptoms started to resolve - almost imperceptibly and very very slowly.  I still have symptoms but they are not in the same league as the ones I was having two years ago.  If I had  been admitted to hospital during this period however I would almost certainly now be two years into taking Risperdal and/or Lithium which was suggested by the private facility at my first and subsequent consults there.

Obviously I am not you and your situation is different and everyone has to decide for themselves.  I agree with Ariel - it would be so lovely if there was a healing place for people who are suffering iatrogenic damage to go where they would feel safe.  I was so desperate at one point in 2020 I was having fantasies about a loving and caring psychiatric environment.  But in my experience that's a contradiction in terms.  There may be people in that facility who are kind but they are operating under a system whose primary treatment modality is drugs.

But you may feel that you need even for a short period more drugs.  Only you can make that call yourself.   But if you sign yourself into one of those places you sign away your agency over what is put into your body.  As a psychiatric patient you don't have the same rights over medical treatment as someone with a physical illness.  Ultimately it's your call - but I am just telling you my own experience.  Now whenever I think of hospital I just think that goodness for the lockdown - otherwise I would have gone in there and ended up on even more drugs.

I hope you can get over this bad wave soon.  In my worst moments I found strength from looking at loads of withdrawal videos in Inner Compass conversations particularly those with Angie Peacock - she is wonderful to listen to and she was on 45 different drugs over the course of her psychiatric period - off everything now for six years I think.

Currently tapering Mirtazapine; previously tapered Cymbalta 30mg from June 2018-Feb 2019 and Seroquel 150mg to zero from Oct-December 2020.

Supplements for Hashimoto's disease and histamine issues relating to Mirtazapine:   Vitamin D3 1,000mcg, bio-identical HRT, Selenium, Quercetin, Lutein, Zinc, Vitamin C, Omega 3.

Mirtazapine Taper: 2021 16th Aug -  transitioned to liquid from tablet by dissolving two 15mg tablets into a solution of 15 ml water and 15 ml maple syrup on a starting dose of what I thought was 7.5ml; 17 Sept  - 7.31; 24 Sept  - 7.13; 15 Oct  - 6.95; 6 Nov  - 6.78; 21 Nov  - 6.61; 5 Dec  - 6.51;

Following helpful advice from moderator OnMyWay (see her  reply of the 5th March) discovered taper with the dilution was 3.8mg (calculated by dividing 30/33 so that every 1ml of solution has  0.90ml of Mirtazapine.  7.50 - 0.90= 6.6ml which was the starting dose on 16th Aug 2021 not 7.5ml).  I decided to keep using the solution as I didn't want more change to deal with than I had to.

I have. Twice in first two months.

First went to a 'premier' hospital outside Boston Here, i spent two weeks.  It was traumatizing.  The doctor denied I was in withdrawal because I had reinstated 25mg at that point so that should have cured it.  I agreed to increase in Zoloft to fend off the other meds they tried to put me on including 7 prns.  I took cold showers and basically bit towels to a avoid being force medicated. No outdoor space besides a dungeon off the basement.  A few of the nurses were ok and a couple of the group's were all right but it was not helpful in any way.  Only harmful.    They wouldn't acknowledge withdraw and the doctor was hostile after I confronted her about inaccuracies about withdrawal.  They basically told me they couldn't help me without drugs.  Only saving grace was I had a private room which I spent majority of time in writing in Journal.

Second hospitalization was better because they actually diagnosed me with discontinuation syndrome and the doctors were much more supportive.  This hospital had clinical social workers and therapists as staff so I received decent therapy everyday so there was at least some real support and I had a lovely roommate.  It didn't do much to help overall but it did pass some very hard weeks.  It won't fix this situation, it can keep you safe, give you emergency priority to set up you up with a therapist.  If you are lucky, some of the inpatient clinical supports might offer some benefit.  That's about it.

Really, unless you are considering trying drugs to help this as some people do, they won't offer much and unless you are really prepared to hold your own it will be very difficult to fend off sleep meds and benzos and not end up poly drugged.  I.  The inpatient  mental health system is modeled after the prison system unless you can afford a private retreat.  I can say being forced to socialize with other patients early on probably was good brain patterning though.  It is not an easy environment

Most of my family barring a sibling finally are getting this is a longer term issue requiring ongoing support and so I have a lot of on call support people.   I talk to family or friends generally one to three hours a day.  And building in daily activities such as walking or reading in the sun.

I'm so sorry you are struggling so hard, pm anytime.

It was really hard leaving the hospitals and feeling no better as well. Logically you know there's no magic cure but it's disheartening to reach out for help which isn't really there.

Hold onto to that beautiful 12 day window and know as we do you will be well

Sending love and prayers your way

Hi @Sunflower414,

I can appreciate how you feel - it is awful to feel trapped and that you have nowhere to turn particularly when family put pressure on you.  I think if you can just stop thinking of the future for the moment and just focus on the day that's in it.  So in other words don't think 'oh i'll be like this for years and years and I won't be able to have kids' and all that.   I read through your thread last night (we're in different time zones and it's 3.15pm where I am now) and I think if you can follow the advice here from the moderators - and the main advice seems to be to 'hold' for as long as it takes.  You've been through a huge amount of different meds and you've been medicated for a long time so realistically I think it will take longer and I think you probably need to just accept that and go with it.

I am currently tapering Mirtazapine but I am doing it even slower than the Brass Monkey taper - mostly no more than 1% per month and I am doing a hold at present.  I accept that it is going to take me a long time - a few years.  I am feeling ok at present - in that I do not have as many intense bouts of dread and terror; I am sleeping ok; I can be in the moment; I am less reactive.  It's not that I am a happy camper - far from it but I am not in the place of almost constant terror that I was in from 2019 to the end of  2021 more or less.  I still expect to get waves and I am not all right all the time if exposed to significant stress but I know I am getting better than I was so I am putting that out there to give you a bit of hope.  I know a little bit of how bad you must feel currently.

I took Paxil too in my twenties and I was cold turkeyed off it in hospital and put on another drug Dothiepin.  I think that as Altostrata has said in your thread that Paxil is one of the toughest drugs to get off so one has to be even more mindful when tapering.  You have youth on your side though unlike a lot of people that are tapering in their 50's like myself and 60's and beyond.  My brain recovered much quicker in my twenties from the cold turkey and drug switches than it did in my 40's.   I am just writing this to give you some positives - I know how bleak you must feel at the moment.

I hope you can take some heart from this and most importantly remember it's your body and not your family's body - so ultimately it is your decision and not theirs about what you should do.  I am only giving you my two cents from my own experience and I cannot know exactly how you feel - you have to make that call yourself.  It's tough to realise that but once you accept it I think you'll feel stronger.

@Oaktree1 you are very wise and your words brought comfort to me today, thank you. Are you doing a certain percentage weekly or just the 1% a month? I'm glad this way of tapering is allowing you to live some sort of life during this time. What made you ultimately decide to get off of medications?

And for anyone reading -- i have searched the sight but not sure if I am just unsure how to find things correctly. Are there any forums or things to read on how to deal with trauma and the PTSD this experience has caused?

Medicated at age 7. Many med changes (over 20). Tapered off Xanax in 2018.

Hi @Sunflower414

Thanks I am glad that these words helped you a bit - going back through your thread I think there is some great advice there from the mods and the other posters in your thread.  I often re-read my own thread if I feel like a bit of support and help.

I just go by what I feel I can tolerate - you can see it varies in my signature.  I reduced 1% in May and have been holding since.  I started by doing the Brass Monkey slide at 2.5% every two weeks and then holding and then I adapted that and went slower.  It all depended on honest appraisal of symptoms.  As to why I decided to get off these medications I was told to come off Cymbalta the second last drug I was on or suffer liver failure; my liver readings on a routine bloods were very dangerously raised - that was a wake up call.  My cholesterol was also very raised and I was not yet 50 and did not smoke or drink.  I think you could say that was the moment I started to come off - I was prepared to stay on them long term only for that happening.  I didn't like the headaches I started getting every two weeks either and the stone and a half of excess weight that I could not shift either but that was not what made me decide to taper Cymbalta which I was told I could just stop cold turkey by my psychiatrist at the time because she said 30mg was a low dose.

Hope that helps - I think reading other threads on this site is the best forum that you could go on for information on how to cope and deal with the trauma of being put on these drugs.  The other site I would recommend is the Inner Compass Initiative which is a very nurturing and helpful site particularly on dealing with the grief and trauma that are almost an inevitable part of having been put on these drugs given that there is literally no support from the medical profession.  You can look up the conversations on the Medicating Normal and Inner Compass Conversations on Youtube and Surviving Anti depressants also has some great conversations on Youtube.  I can never get enough of listening to other survivor's testimony.  If you are feeling alone and isolated it can be good to listen to other people personal stories

hi @Greatful I am still doing about the same. Maybe today was slightly better. I just have the looping thoughts that this has ruined my whole life, but doing my best to challenge those thoughts and rely on what God says. How are you?
